I am usually more amused by it honestly but I cringe when I hear a supposely intellectual newspaper, the WST claiming that liberals think a certain way about someone your average liberal probably hasn't even heard of. It may shock some conservatives but liberals are capable of working hard, loving their families, being self reliant, etc. We just don't believe that blaming the government for all the country's problems is true.

British archaeologist destroys Holocaust deniers' argument with mass grave find at Treblinka
A British forensic archaeologist has unearthed fresh evidence to prove the existence of mass graves at the Nazi death camp Treblinka - scuppering the claims of Holocaust deniers who say it was merely a transit camp.
Some 800,000 Jews were killed at the site, in north east Poland, during the Second World War but a lack of physical evidence in the area has been exploited by Holocaust deniers.
Forensic archaeologist Caroline Sturdy Colls has now undertaken the first co-ordinated scientific attempt to locate the graves.

It still does not prove exactly how many died. It could be 100,000, and not 800,000. Or, it could be a million. The fact is, we don't know. Personally, I believe that even if it was "just" 1 person who died, that is 1 person too many. But what I don't like is the fact we're meant to believe the 6 million figure and are not allowed to question it's accuracy.

How to Write a Clichéd, Unpersuasive Argument Against Drug Legalization
[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com...]
This piece by Manon McKinnon at The American Spectator is so perfect an exhibit in pompous drug war cheerleading that one can construct a fairly comprehensive crash course in bad drug policy writing based entirely upon its contents. Let's take a moment to review some of the tactics on display here, which may go a long way towards illustrating why modern drug war apologists have been losing traction in the growing public debate over American drug policy.
Step 1: Attempt to marginalize supporters of drug policy reform by claiming they are "pot heads."
...
Step 3: Insist confidently -- but without citation -- that no one actually gets in serious trouble for personal use.
....
Step 5: Compare regulating drugs to legalizing rape.

I have a "multiple hat" job. Buffer is just one. I also do security analyst support work in SAP, support a number of database interfaces (SSIS, SQL), and am the SAP security person for three project teams (test IDs, training IDs, and consultant concerning security access.) This story came out Friday:
Officer beats 66-year-old man suffering from dementia
[Link: www.wftv.com...]
WFTV obtained dash camera video of a violent police beating in Melbourne.
The video shows an officer attacking a 66–year-old man who WFTV learned is suffering from dementia.
In the video, Melbourne police Officer Derek Middendorf is shown giving Albert Flowers a front kick to his stomach.
Middendorf then punched Flowers repeatedly while he was on the ground.
Here's the "best" part:
The officer turned off his video and audio equipment before the beating. The department was able to extract the video from the hard drive, but not the audio.
The only disciplinary record the officer received for the incident was a written reprimand for turning off the recording equipment.
Flowers was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer.
This all happened last October. After the video got released they decided maybe they didn't want to charge the guy after all:
Charges dropped against man beaten by officer
[Link: www.wftv.com...]
State Attorney Norman Wolfinger said he reviewed the case file on Tuesday, along with additional information the office had received, and ordered attorneys to drop the charges.
"Although there is probable cause to support the legality of the arrest, a full review of the in-car video, the written reprimand by the Melbourne police of their officer’s actions that prevented an audio recording, and the documented mental health history of the defendant would not support a successful prosecution. re: #161 RogueOne
This story came out Friday:
Officer beats 66-year-old man suffering from dementia
[Link: www.wftv.com...]Here's the "best" part:
This all happened last October. After the video got released they decided maybe they didn't want to charge the guy after all:
Charges dropped against man beaten by officer
[Link: www.wftv.com...]They had the video for quite awhile. They could have dropped the charges at any time but we're supposed to believe that the release of the video and the resulting outrage over the weekend had nothing to do with their decision.
A minor correction. The initial part of the beating was done with the camera on. Another officer is caught on tape running to the vehicle, whereupon the camera signal ends. Yep, the beating officer didn't turn it off, another officer did, and the beating continued. (per definition that makes it a conspiracy, by the way, if the DA should decide to act.)

I get the "blame M$" meme, but I've been around long enough I don't really buy it. Not least, I've had problems with CP/M and *nix of various sorts. Heck, notice that of the five disasters Varek , only one is M$. Not mentioned is the noteworthy (though less expensive) error - the mars probe that had a little problem with math due to metric/imperial measurement confusion.
Fully tested, I have no problem with M$ in mission critical roles.

fwiw, I came to that realization a few years ago when discussing car maintenance and repairs.
The people who do it, who have a full set of tools and think nothing of a handful of hours changing belts and plugs and brakes, much less the oil, cannot grok those who pay to have their oil changed and for whom anything past that is "take it to the mechanic".
The same principle is in play. If you like playing with those toys, the nuts and bolts and the toolsets to be learned and obtained are part of the fun, or at worst a minor nuisance. If you don't like playing with those toys, they are all, each and every one of them, another stone in the wall between you and what you want to be doing.

IMO, helldesk doesn't get paid enough, not even for those of us who somewhat like it and are good at it. Perhaps I should say especially for us. Those of us who figure out that the real reason Sam from Accounting can't seem to remember jack isn't that he's an idiot, it's that he's stuck in the spare cubicle on the other side of the bathroom and sees (and talks to) literally nobody -- you're about the only human he can reach. Those of us who can develop and use non-computer analogies to help our customer through their particular problem. And most especially, those of us who can envision from non-standard input and articulate clear and precise responses for the non-specialist without having to 'just go there and do it ourselves'.
Instead, it's almost always manned by the entry level computer geek, and pay is commensurate. It's like paying your salespeople minimum wage, except most customers are locked into using the company store. No need to change if you're not going to lose them anyway.

My current and previous company have their 1st level Helpdesk farmed out to a 3rd party. You have to assume that the initial person taking the call has *zero* knowledge about your applications. Their job is using a set of scripts, get the ticket started, and then dumping the ticket into the appropriate support bucket with an appropriate priority on it.
So the issue then becomes communications skills (both the end-user and the Helpdesk tech), the quality of the scripts, and whether the end-user has some understanding of what went wrong in order to properly communicate it.
The scripts are notoriously prone to "magic word syndrome". If a certain word is mentioned as part of the issue the ticket gravitates into certain buckets even when the issue is completely different. At the current company a magic word is "SAP" that gets the SAP Functional Support bucket tickets having to do with a bad SAP GUI (desktop issue) and so on. At my previous employer a certain app server was identified as the "Railtrac server" even though it supported 7-8 applications. So every problem with an app on that server found its way to the Railtrac support analyst. Which for eight years was me.
Needless to say I'm not a great fan of 3rd party Helpdesk implementations.

I got around that by emailing the Helpdesk with the issue and sending a CC to the guy in the next cubicle who I knew was going to fix it.
I also repeatedly got into arguments with my manager about my habit of emailing the Helpdesk (with a 4-6 hour SLA) as compared to calling them when I would then get a ticket immediately (after waiting 2-30 minutes for an analyst.) I told him that there was no way I trusted the Helpdesk to transcribe correctly the technical information I had to go along with the ticket.

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Former Alabama cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick has been arrested on a marijuana possession charge.
An arrest report on the Manatee County Sheriff's Office web site says Kirkpatrick was arrested at 12:48 a.m. Tuesday and charged with possessing less than 20 grams of marijuana. He was released on $120 bond.

Thats why I've had mixed emotions about the hikers caught along the Iraq/Iran border (or other similar stories)
On the one hand, if they did just make an honest mistake and were on, near, or slightly over the border, arresting, jailing and sentencing them ("ransom" money paid for their release aside) is ludicrous.
On the other hand, you have a few friends sitting around in an apartment in (lets say) Atlanta and decide "you know where we should go for a hike ,,,,",, The Iran/ Iraq border,, or any "hot spot" around the world would NOT make me and my friends list

re: #61 Obdicut
It'd block DNS lookup, but you could still go there by just manually typing in the IP address.
It's a bit worse than that. It provides for blocking DNS resolution of the entire domain hosting allegedly infringing material (also note that there is no legal due process whatsoever involved).
Picture this scenario:
Pirate Pete puts the latest Steamy Ray Vaughn release on his personal website which he hosts on the space provided to him by his ISP, derpnet.com. Well, ol' Steamy Ray's lawyers find out about it, and woo wee do they ever give out a hoot 'n a holler! Next thing you know, derpnet.com doesn't resolve anymore, which means (among other things) that derpnet customers, even those who have never even heard of Steamy Ray Vaughn, much less engaged in pirating his latest emanations, can't receive email. They also can't send email, because most smart hosts reject inbound email from non-resolvable hosts, like so. In short, it breaks the shit out of derpnet.com.
Now, derpnet.com is a small ISP, but they still have about 10,000 customers. If derpnet.com wants to stay in business, it has two choices:
1) Hire enough staff to monitor everything stored by all 10,000 of its customers to make sure that none of it is infringing. They don't actually have to worry about whether it's truly legally infringing, but they do need to be able to predict what someone's expensive legal team will allege to be infringing.
They will also need to make sure that, even if their users aren't directly uploading infringing content (e.g., MP3s, videos, etc), they are also not posting links to sites where such material is allegedly hosted. So, derpnet.com also needs to make sure that nothing on [Link: www.catpictureswithcaptions.com...] is potentially infringing. Hopefully there's not an identifiable copyrighted image in the background of one of those photos!
- OR -
2) Completely prohibit all customers from posting anything on their servers.
I wonder which one they'll choose.

I don't have a strong opinion of SOPA one way or the other but the blackouts from Reddit and google are a very effective form of protest. I imagine a lot of people who haven't been paying attention are now looking into the issue and forming an opinion. It's simple, focused, principled and effective within a very short period of time and with minimal effort and expense. OWS, on the other hand spent a lot of time, money and effort to accomplish nothing aside from stricter regulations for camping in urban parks.

Treats you as guilty until proven innocent. And in the meantime wrecks DNS resolution for that user and a lot more. Sort of like napalming a village to get one *alleged* criminal.
I think the goal is make it so heinious that the on-line community will fall in line to enforce it. I don't think that will work in any case, and while they take time to realize that and consider modifying it a lot of abuse will take place and damage done.

In favor of Amazon Prime: faster 2-day shipping, no minimum order size, unlimited instant streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows with Prime instant videos, and a Kindle book to borrow for free each month from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library.
I don't bother with Amazon Prime since I usually buy stuff in excess of $25 at a time, and super saver shipping is sufficient (I buy most items well in advance of when they're needed). I don't have a Kindle, and I can stream 'net stuff through other free services and via Verizon's OnDemand system.

Report: Captain claims he "tripped" into lifeboat
The cruise ship captain under fire for abandoning his vessel while thousands of passengers scrambled for rescue has reportedly come up with an explanation for his flight - he accidentally tripped and fell into a lifeboat.

Two key senators drop support for the SOPA/PIPA legislation and instead are urging more research on the matter.
Freshman Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, a rising Republican star, was first out of the starting gate Wednesday morning with his announcement that he would no longer back anti-Internet piracy legislation he had co-sponsored. Senator John Cornyn, the Texas Republican who heads the campaign operation for his party, quickly followed suit and urged Congress take more time to study the measure that had been set for a test vote next week.
Mr. Cornyn, just before 9 a.m, posted on his Facebook page that it was “better to get this done right rather than fast and wrong. Stealing content is theft, plain and simple, but concerns about unintended damage to the internet and innovation in the tech sector require a more thoughtful balance, which will take more time.”
Their decisions came after swathes of the Internet were shut down Wednesday to protest two separate bills, the Stop On-line Piracy Act in the House, written by Representative Lamar Smith, the Texas Republican who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, and the Protect Intellectual Property Act, drafted by Senator Patrick Leahy, the Vermont Democrat who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Members of Congress, many of whom are grappling with the issues posed by the explosion in new media and social web sites, appeared caught off guard by the backlash to what had been a relatively obscure piece of legislation to many of them. The Internet sensibility of the Senate was represented a few years ago in remarks by the late Senator Ted Stevens, Republican of Alaska, who called the Internet “not a big truck” but “series of tubes” - an observation enshrined in the Net Hall of Shame.
The legislation, which is being pushed by the likes of the RIAA and Chamber of Commerce, wouldn't be able to really address the crux of the problem - that piracy is a matter that is outside the US jurisdiction. It happens overseas, and it is a ham-fisted measure that would adversely affect US companies and content providers here without actually reducing piracy overseas. Even the proponents of the legislation admit that the bills aren't sufficient to go after the piracy overseas and look to reduce their linkages domestically.
Then again, there are those who argue that scapegoating countries like China ignores that piracy is sometimes overblown and often used as a campaign issue. For instance, someone who illegally downloaded a song didn't cost the recording industry a $15 sale but possibly a $.99 cent iTunes download. Then again, if that person liked the song that they illegally downloaded, they might potentially buy the entire album or compilation of songs - such that the illegally downloaded song became advertising for the artist's larger collection of works. That's a somewhat compelling argument, and it underlines the difficulty in quantifying the costs to the industry.

The greenhouse is about half finished an should be completed by the end of the day. I'm really surprised how big the finished project is. Unfortunately the workers have been cutting aluminum and pressure treated wood over my nice beds of organic compost. I'll have to skim off the top inch of soil once they're done.
I'm really looking forward to letting the cats explore the greenhouse. They're both indoor cats and have never been outside their entire lives. It will be the largest open space they've ever experienced and they'll really enjoy the view of the garden and pond.
Find out what's in the wood first. The really bad stuff (Pentachlorophenol) is long out of the system. It might be something inert to plants. I think aluminum is just about everywhere (except Britain) in one compound or another.

Those transcripts are the most damning bit of evidence against the captain; he simply didn't stay with the ship during the critical moments as the crew struggled to get passengers off the ship.
Tripping and falling into a lifeboat is his excuse for not being on the ship? That's his excuse? That makes no sense whatsoever, and it again ignores that he could have returned to the ship to help with the rescue effort.
Then again, it is possible that despite the captains mistakes in guiding the ship as close as he did - causing the accident, his later actions to ground the ship may have saved some additional number of lives. We'll have to wait for a full investigation and review of records to see what transpired.
Besides all the craziness with the captain, this particular disaster shows the need to better review disaster preparation/evacuation procedures on the ships - crews need to understand what to do and how to keep tabs of passengers and crews as they leave the ship.

I think I'm going to just skim it off just to be safe. I learned a nifty trick this summer when a neighbor sprayed paint chips all over my garden. I have a large shop vac and when the soil is dry I can use it to suck up just the very top of the contaminated soil. It's a pretty easy and clean operation.

I'm actually pretty lax about it. I don't grow edibles right up to the foundation of the house. The soil near the foundations of these old houses is usually pretty toxic from old lead paint. It's safe to assume the rest of the yard has plenty of old chemicals and toxins, that's just a fact of urban gardening.

Lead does scare me, like mercury. I was very careful to control the chips and residue when I stripped an old boat in the yard. Good risk management says to get a real ID and assessment of other compounds and their migration through the food chain before spending a lot of time and money on mitigation. Here's a warning on "Killer Compost" that is loose to some extent in the garden world:

re: #304 Killgore Trout
I don't have a strong opinion of SOPA one way or the other but the blackouts from Reddit and google are a very effective form of protest. I imagine a lot of people who haven't been paying attention are now looking into the issue and forming an opinion. It's simple, focused, principled and effective within a very short period of time and with minimal effort and expense. OWS, on the other hand spent a lot of time, money and effort to accomplish nothing aside from stricter regulations for camping in urban parks.
Actually, I think OWS did focus attention on the problem. Equally, it made it clear that those who don't like the problem aren't alone in their dislike.
I'll give you a specific consequence. Mitt Romney's tax forms are a lot more of a problem than they were in 2008. Heck, Romney's tax forms are more of a problem than McCain's or Kerry's, both of whom had many similar issues. Part of this is the recession. Part, however, is the focused awareness of the general public, of which a significant proportion has been created by the OWS.
In April, Romney's going to put out a tax form which says he had, at best, a 15% overall tax rate, at the same time he's pushing lower taxes for the top.

Probably safer up there as compared to the industrial sites right along the river. The last place I worked in Pittsburgh was 40' off the Mon in old LTV turf. I presume if you dug down 8-10' past the remediation layer there would be lots of fun stuff there.
Digging in the backyard of where I used to live in Oakland would turn up all sorts of debris. Bricks, glass, and we even found an entire wooden door once.
