Washington Post: Obama to Reject Keystone Oil Pipeline

An environmental disaster that won’t happen
Politics • Views: 20,090

The Washington Post is reporting that the Obama administration will reject a Canadian company’s application to build a gigantic oil pipeline crossing the US-Canadian border: Obama administration to reject Keystone pipeline.

Forecast: frothing outrage across the entire right wing blogosphere. In other words, the usual.

The administration will allow TransCanada to reapply after it develops an alternate route through the sensitive habitat of Nebraska’s Sandhills. Deputy Secretary of State William J. Burns will make the announcement, which comes in response to a congressionally-mandated deadline of Feb. 21 for action on the proposed Keystone pipeline.

The route was rejected, so the concept can continue if they reapply with revisions.

That won't stop the coming outrage, though.

And when gasoline prices go up for whatever reason, Obama will be blamed for "not doing enough to encouroage domestic production", although a) it involves Canada and b) most of it would wind up being shipped off to China (or the highest bidder) anyways.

The Oil Goes to China, the Permanent Jobs Go to Canada, We Get the Spills, and the World Gets Warmer

You’ll hear the GOP, the American Petroleum Institute, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce make wild claims about the job creation potential of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. Don’t be fooled. The pipeline company itself admits only “a few hundred permanent jobs” are created by Keystone XL.

The debate over whether Keystone XL creates jobs is a convenient diversion from something oil company backers don’t want you to know: this is an export pipeline to help them access foreign markets and bypass the United States. Oil companies will make bigger profits and oil prices for Americans will increase. That’s not a project that helps Americans. It’s a project that helps Big Oil.

Had a wingnut who tried to claim that there were going to be "countless permanent jobs" created by the refineries being upgraded in Texas for this oil. That was until I showed him websites from as far back as '06, which showed the industry planning the upgrade of these refineries to handle the oil without any mention of a planned pipeline.

He went silent after that.

They sit atop the Ogalalla aquifer, which supplies water to something like 30% of the irrigated land in this country. Were you doing hydrology, or just driving down the highway?

It was on a messageboard, so by going silent, it meant he skittered away from the topic, because he had no further arguments.

He does the same thing frequently, dropping out of threads when he's had his ass handed to him. Other times, he does play the good little automaton, beating the same dead horse until it's little more than a pile of bleached bones.

17 Interesting Times in Benghazi  Wed, Jan 18, 2012 12:13:16pm

John Boehner's Keystone XL conflict of interest

Environmentalists note that in December 2010, according to Boehner’s financial disclosure forms, he invested $10,000 to $50,000 each in seven firms that had a stake in Canada’s oil sands, the region that produces the oil the pipeline would transport. The firms include six oil companies — BP, Canadian Natural Resources, Chevron, Conoco Phillips, Devon Energy and Exxon — along with Emerson Electric, which has a contract to provide the digital automation for the first phase of a $9.4 billion Horizon Oil Sands Project in Canada.

Bill McKibben, a climate activist and co-founder of the group 350.org, wrote in an e-mail that Boehner has received more than $1 million from fossil-fuel companies, “and now we find out that he’s got extensive personal investments in companies dependent on tarsands oil.”

“He was willing to shut down the government in part to prevent enough time for serious environmental review,” McKibben added. “In any other facet of our public life . . . this whole list taken together would be seen for the gross conflict of interest that it is.”

And as the port where the oil would be off-loaded and refined is classified as a trade zone, there would be little to no taxes paid on the end-products before they were shipped off.

Correction: 34% of respondents said it was their most-trusted source, and another 34% said it was their least-trusted source. Democrats - and Independents - gave positive trust ratings to all news sources except Fox, while Republicans gave positive trust ratings only to Fox.

Translation? Republicans are more out of touch with reality than ever.

I think it was clear as day what she meant. Even a passive-aggressive bigot like Mitt Romney (who stands on stage and smiles for the cameras while Newt blows the dog whistle next to him) could have caught that one.

You know, I know, most here at LGF, and the hard-core RWNJs knows exactly what that Gingrich supporter meant. The issue is those ignorant and misguided souls that would vote for today's GOP presidential candidates (especially the more virulent ones like Gingrich and Perry) based on a image and reputation long since gone. Name recognition still goes a long way, especially for a party that loves to prop up the corpse of Reagan any chance they get, never mind the fact that most of what they worship and fetishize about the man never really was to begin with.

The boss, who’s something of a gold standard enthusiast, is excited: Newt Gingrich called this morning for a Gold Commission, like the one Ronald Reagan set up in 1981, to consider how to get back to hard money (and perhaps to gold). Here’s video of Gingrich speaking in Columbia, S.C., at a foreign policy forum sponsored by the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition.

he's trying to get the goldbugs too.

And here's crazy Pammy chiming in:

OBAMA'S WAR ON AMERICA: OBAMA KILLS PIPELINE, 25,000 JOBS, CHEAPER ENERGY

The Obama administration will formally reject the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline today, multiple sources tell POLITICO. The announcement will come this afternoon from the State Department. (Politico)

Job killer, economy killer, energy independence killer ........... instead he shooses to enrich and embolden funding Islamic supremacist nations with petrol dollars.

Obama forced Canada to sell its huge oil reserves to China instead of the United States. China, of course, has rushed in.

Horrible.

Back in November, I posted this at Atlas:

Obama has killed a desperately needed pipeline. We lose 25,000 jobs and CHEAPER energy costs, while alienating one of America's greatest allies.

Where are the Republican warriors on the right? Aren't they more afraid of what Obama and the uber left are doing to destroy this country than they are of the ankle-biting press?

Considering the dire straits this nation is in, this is criminal.

140 McSpiff  Wed, Jan 18, 2012 1:26:13pm

From my limited understanding... One possibility is Keystone XL not re-applying. Once they get the agreement of BC native groups, you'll see this pipeline run from the Alberta Tarsands to Kitimat, BC. Its already home to a large aluminum smelter, but you'll see a deep water terminal put in. There's also talk of a LNG terminal in Kitimat. From there, the oil goes to China.

Personally, I think this would be an excellent plan.

Boehner now crying on MSNBC about this..."He was supposed to wait 60 days and cave!"

"Now Canada will have to look to other nations to sell its oil...like China." WTF? They have an alternate pipeline route through China?

Well, what we have is a plan for another pipeline from Northern Alberta through the north of British Columbia to the Northern deep water port near Kitimat BC. From there it can be shipped in tankers to China and anywhere else. We are debating the environmental impact of this as we speak and hearings are about to begin. Either way, we will export oil both to the US, and to Asia. The deep water port can also be used for transport to CA.

166 tshinkle  Wed, Jan 18, 2012 10:41:32pm

The route is not the issue, rather it's the left's ongoing fight against fossil fuels. Nobody, who is serious, believes the "full review" argument, which truly is a joke.

The truth is, with this administration (and the left), environmentalism trumps liberty, trumps jobs, trumps financial independence from China, and trumps energy independence from the radical middle east.

Of course the right were playing politics by imposing the deadline, but the alternative was to let the Administration continue to stall indefinitely and not bring this very important issue to the voters during an election year.

re: #166 tshinkle

Your post not only completely reframes the issue into liberal/blame worldview, the most telling point is that you completely disassociate the use of fossil fuel with negative effects of global warming.

You are right in that environmentalism trumps '...liberty, jobs, financial independence from China, and energy independence from the radical middle east.'

It absolutely does. Global warming caused by fossil fuels will make all those issues seem a silly worry in a few decades, if that. But you choose to ignore it, reject it, or blame it on liberals. That's ideology, not objectivity.

You reject climate science and are a right wing ideologue incapable of having a discussion.

Perhaps he also participated in this lovely activity:

A well-organized and vocal group of residents has taken a keen interest in municipal preparations for sea-level rise caused by climate change, often shouting their opposition, sometimes while planners and politicians are talking.
...
As the opposition grew over the summer, confrontations became so heated that some planners posted uniformed police officers at meetings and others hired consultants to help calm audiences and manage the indoor environment, several planners said.
...
“It’s driving public policy sideways,” Lawrence said. “It’s not advancing it. It’s not going backward. The voice of a minority is trying to assert itself as the voice of the majority.”

And, like classic willfully ignorant bullies incapable of taking responsibility for their actions, when the inevitable rising waters threaten their lives and property, they'll be screaming like stuck pigs for the government to come to their rescue.
