Newt Gingrich’s ‘Grandiose Thoughts’

Raging egomania
Politics • Views: 25,939

The Romney campaign seized on Newt Gingrich’s ludicrous pronouncement at last night’s debate, with a press release outlining Gingrich’s history of over the top egomaniacal self-adoration: ‘I Think Grandiose Thoughts’.

A Selection Of Speaker Gingrich’s Thoughts Over The Years

Gingrich on Gingrich:

“I Think I Am A Transformational Figure.” (PBS.org, 12/2/11)

“I Am Essentially A Revolutionary.” (Adam Clymer, “House Revolutionary,” The New York Times, 8/23/92)

“Philosophically, I Am Very Different From Normal Politicians … We Have Big Ideas.” (Andrew Ferguson, “What Does Newt Gingrich Know?” The New York Times, 6/29/11)

“I Have An Enormous Personal Ambition. I Want To Shift The Entire Planet. And I’m Doing It. … I Represent Real Power.” (Lois Romano, “Newt Gingrich, Maverick On The Hill,” The Washington Post, 1/3/85)

“I First Talked About [Saving Civilization] In August Of 1958.” (Robert Draper, “He’s Baaack!” GQ, 8/05)

“Over My Years In Public Life, I Have Become Known As An ‘Ideas Man.’” (Andrew Ferguson, “What Does Newt Gingrich Know?” The New York Times, 6/29/11)

“I Am The Longest Serving Teacher In The Senior Military, 23 Years Teaching One And Two-Star Generals And Admirals The Art Of War.” (GOP Presidential Candidates Debate, 12/15/11)

By the way, Newt seems to think “grandiose” means spectacularly brilliant and visionary … but Wikipedia has a somewhat different take on the word: Grandiosity.

Grandiosity is chiefly associated with narcissistic personality disorder, but also commonly features in manic or hypomanic episodes of bipolar disorder.

It refers to an unrealistic sense of superiority, a sustained view of oneself as better than others that causes the narcissist to view others with disdain or as inferior. It also refers to a sense of uniqueness, the belief that few others have anything in common with oneself and that one can only be understood by a few or very special people.

A perfect description of Newt Gingrich.

The word that comes to mind over here is 'vainglorious.'

Synonyms: assured, biggety (or biggity) [Southern & Midland], bigheaded, complacent, consequential, egoistic (also egoistical), egotistic (or egotistical), important, overweening, pompous, prideful, proud, self-conceited, self-important, self-opinionated, self-satisfied, smug, stuck-up, swellheaded, vain, conceited

I find Gingrich every bit as loathsome as Palin. Maybe even slightly more so. That she's endorsing him seals it. They're both narcissists. They might do well to remember how that self-adoration worked out for the original Narcissus. But they won't; they're too busy admiring themselves.

Actually the decision favors the Texas Legislature. It essentially is saying that the federal court version did not take their input into account enough and went off on its own merry course.

Looks like HHS held the line against all the pressure for an expanded religious exemption:
[Link: thehill.com...]

Most healthcare plans will be required to cover birth control without charging co-pays or deductibles starting Aug. 1, the Obama administration announced Friday.

The final regulation retains the approach federal health officials proposed last summer, despite the deluge of complaints from religious groups and congressional Republicans that has poured in since then. Churches, synagogues and other houses of worship are exempt from the requirement, but religious-affiliated hospitals and universities only get a one-year delay and must comply by Aug. 1, 2013.

...

Congressional Republicans slammed the decision as an assault on religious freedom.

"This ruling forces religious organizations to violate the fundamental tenets of their faith, or stop offering health insurance coverage to their employees," said the Republican Policy Committee. "Time will tell whether those institutions choose the former or the latter course — but neither option should be necessary, if the administration had not taken such an unbending approach to appease its liberal base."

[Link: news.firedoglake.com...]

So with this announcement, almost all Americans will have access to contraceptives, mostly free of charge. And it’s not just FDA-approved birth control that gets this treatment, but also counseling and screening for STDs, breastfeeding and other post-natal support, and an annual women’s preventive care visit. All of that will need to be part of employer health plans going forward.

Because then the district court would be overreaching itself. Its a basic principle of federalism that as long as the State legislature is not violating the Constitution, the courts have to defer to the legislature's judgment; otherwise the Court is acting as a superlegislature. Thus the court should not substitute its judgment for the legislature's, except to the minimum extent necessary to comply with the Constitution.

Well, let's face it. A lot of voters wouldn't vote for a person with a realistic view of him or herself. They want a Leader, and Leaders are never, ever uncertain.

So Newt's perfect for them.
