Gingrich’s Race Baiting Strategy Pays Off in S. Carolina

Blatant appeals to racist stereotypes give Newt the edge
Politics • Views: 24,996

Newt Gingrich’s appallingly overt race-baiting has paid off big-time in South Carolina, where the Confederate flag flies in front of the state Capitol building: Gingrich Is Well-Positioned as South Carolina Votes.

Newt Gingrich, who had trailed Mitt Romney by a double-digit margin in South Carolina in several polls conducted just after the New Hampshire primary, may instead be headed to a big victory there, recent polling suggests.

Mr. Gingrich leads Mr. Romney 38 to 30 in the FiveThirtyEight forecast of South Carolina, which has been updated with polling through Friday evening.

It’s pretty hilarious to see Gingrich surging again. I can’t think of a more flawed candidate.

Hilarious and hopeful. Hope he defeats Romney. I’m thinking tactically here, of course.

Is that why his counter attack on the open marriage question was so very well received, even beyond the room?

If I had been the moderator I would have been sorely tempted to respond in kind-Stand up and say-How dare you Mr Gingrich attempt to exclude legitimate questions on character of you or any candidate to lead this nation? The questions come from me to you sir, not the other way ‘round.

As an Obama supporter (not necessarily an O-bot, but convinced he’s significantly better than any current republican candidate), both a contested primary right up to (or even into) the convention AND the idea of Newt being the nominee fill me with glee.

The Obama-Clinton race forced both candidates to fight hard for their delegates, giving little to no room to walk back positions to woo the middle. Instead they had to leave a tiny bit of wiggle room while mostly hoping their position to their base didn’t send the middle screaming to McCain.

There is no reason to believe the same “clarification” wouldn’t happen in a Republican long race.

At that point the republicans have to hope their base appeals to the middle as much as the Democratic base message appealed four years ago.

I don’t think so.

I don’t get how Gingrich, who’s Catholic, is so preferable to a Mormon. Aren’t they both teh debil to the evangelicals?

Even a generation ago, yes. However, certain social-conservative Catholics have managed to position themselves, by shifting their focus from social justice to the social conservative craziness, as acceptable alternatives. Poster boy is Santorum, of course. For whatever reason, Mormons still don’t count.

I wonder if they might, if they started doing the obsessive social purity talk. Or not. This is all a bit complicated.

‘After [being sanctioned by the House Ethics Committee], Gingrich started to deteriorate. There were times, Marianne says, when he wasn’t functioning. He started yelling at people, which he’d never done before, and he’d get weirdly “overfocused” on getting things done — manic, as if he was running out of time. He took to taking meetings while eating, slurping his food, as if he wasn’t aware or didn’t care how strange it looked. The staff responded with gallows humor: “He’s a sociopath, but he’s our sociopath.”
// Esquire Sept. 2010

. Gingrich may be ‘well-positioned’ but he is conspicuously unfit for the Presidency.

South Carolina was the first state to secede, and they did so entirely because of slavery. The white minority wanted to keep profiting off the slave labor of the black majority.

Is it any wonder that they’d love a guy now who baits them with white resentment towards a black president?

Depends on which Evangelicals.

Mainline ones - Evangelical Lutherans (ELCA), most Methodists, American Baptist Convention, United Church of Christ, etc., no.

Conservative bigoted ones like Southern Baptist Convention, most Pentecostals, and such, well, they luvvv that antigay and anti-woman bit. But they just want the hashmarks. They don’t want to sit next to them in church unless they’re converting.

Maybe I’m giving a wrong analogy here… but let’s take Jack Chick. He always exposes Catholics, but he was pretty sympathetic when it came to Russian Orthodox Church under Bolsheviks. In that strip they were simply “Russian Christians” or something like that, despite saints, icons and whatnot. So it’s situational. Against a humongously greater “evil” they may accept even Romney, but Catholics are just much nearer on the Christian continuum.

You think that’s bad. Then there’s the ‘no, people didn’t speak Spanish in Mexico thousands of years ago’ talk, and the ‘no, they weren’t Christians OR Catholics then either’. Bear in mind that many of these kids are FROM Mexico, or their parents are.

One in a while you get a kid who actually knows a bit of Mexican history, and they just sit there and ROLL their eyes.

(There was also the kid who took away a lesson on Mexican history for a reading class from me and said, “Please, your accent is horrible. Let me.” But he was a high school junior.)

A lot of that is Fundamentalist kneejerk commiebaiting and ignorance about Orthodoxy. It’s about on the level of Rush defending The Lord’s Army against The Moozlum in the WH.

Send a Baptist Fundamentalist idiot like Jack Chick into an Orthodox cathedral, watch them go up in smoke from all the “idols” and blah blah.

My State, sad to say. You know, the ironic thing is that reformed rakes often become the most ardent supporters of the other side from their original positions. As strange as it may seem, if South Carolina ever had a Huey Long come along to combine Populism, Evangelicalism, and a kind of benevolent progressive capitalism, it could actually shift its entire political makeup about on its axis. Of course, the low country Bourbons would finally have to burn out the Upstate Jonesists, but it could be done.

Peaceful protest update…

Officers injured, five arrested in late-night Occupy SF protest

Five people were arrested late Friday night when police and Occupy protesters clashed at a long-closed hotel, leaving some officers injured, authorities said.
The violence flared after 10 p.m. when police confronted hundreds of activists at the Cathedral Hill Hotel, on Van Ness Avenue near Geary Street.
Some protesters occupying the hotel threw objects at police clad in riot gear during the clash, injuring three officers, authorities said.
The incident occurred at the end of an otherwise peaceful daylong series of protests — called Occupy Wall Street West — in downtown San Francisco.
An additional 19 people were arrested early in the day, mostly for blocking an entrance at the Wells Fargo headquarters. One man was arrested for apparently being in possession of a police baton after a brief clash with police near the intersection of California and Montgomery streets.

Frank Connelly is the producer of a television series based on evolution. But his meeting with the Crusaders and their friend, Dr. Lind, will change his opinion on what he’s producing.

Dr. Lind spends time with the producer discussing various “facts” of evolution.

With proof presented to him, Frank Connelly is convinced evolution is not the truth.

This comic proves that the “science” of evolution can only be labeled as misleading theory. Many are being brainwashed in the schools and through the media into believing the Bible is false and that evolution is a scientific fact. Now it’s time they are told the truth!

Hahahaha!
Brainwashing indeed!

One of the CT deployment techniques is to stuff copies in books at the public library. One library director I know decided this made a great method of picking what books went on display that week. Find a CT - shelf reading, checking books in or out, whatever - note the book on a list for the director.

Of course it also prepped her for upcoming book challenges from the “why is that trash in the library” crowd. Amazing how often that correlated.

There was also a report that they were throwing bibles off the hotel roof. I wasn’t sure if that was supposed to be a suggestion that the Bible agrees with their demands about the hotel, or if they just HAD some bibles, or what, or if the newscaster got that wrong.

The building in question is, I believe, going to be converted into a hospital building.

Since wanting to be president is probably, in and of itself, evidence of a psychiatric disorder…I don’t know if it would help.

No. Jack Chick has spoken. They wanted Jerusalem, but the Jews wouldn’t let them, so they had the Jews rounded up, killed, and raped. They also sponsored Islam, but then Islam bit them in the ass, and wouldn’t let them have Jerusalem either.

Hitler, the KKK, the Russian Revolution, and some other stuff is also blamed on the Catholic Church (“Mother of Abominations”), but I think the really good one is this comic book’s deranged explanation of the Children’s Crusade. 2. Blank slates who have never heard the Truth, and will accept it wholeheartedly if told about it by the most random people.

3. Evil people who accept or have been hoodwinked by the worldwide worship of the Goddess and her son. This includes everyone from Roman Catholics to new age healers. All the really bad people are in this category, but some of them can be saved, making them potential Category Twos.

4. Jews, who are not Goddess worshippers, but are otherwise pretty bad, although they may double as innocent victims of Category Threes.

You may THINK you’re an atheist, but that means you believe in science and evolution, which is all a plot by the Category Three people. So really, you’re just a Category Three, like the Roman Catholics.

I’m sure Santorum is just clenching his jaw and complaining to his aides:

How is Newt out biggoting me? I’m supposed to be the bigot who wins SC.

That said, Santorum could never win a general. On the other hand, I can see a certain reality distortion field where Newt actually wins it. Yeah, I have a low opinion of the voting public.

First, I can easily see Newt winning the nomination, especially now. In fact, I’d bet on it. He wins SC and the Republican base says he’s our guy. The base can’t stand Romney. Carville said it best:

It ‘s like you’re trying to give a dog a pill. They keep spitting it up.

If Newt wins the nomination, then you get to the general and the Republican party gets to let its bigot flag fly. They win dirty and as I’ve said before, Newt is one evil fuck. Newt wins Texas, FLA, PA and Ohio.

No, it’s probably only 27%. //

OK, a touch of seriousness.

In some recent favorability polls, Newt did well with Republicans and tanked with Democrats. No big surprise. The surprise, and why I want him to get the nod, is he also tanked with independents — at almost 2:1 dislike to like. Same group is ~1:1 on Obama. Remember that we’re presently 1/3 each grouping, and run the numbers.

33% are Dems for O. 33% are Reps for N. 50% of I’s (16%) like O, 33% of I’s (11%) like N, and the remaining 17% (6%) splits 2:1 O:N (4 more for O, 2 more for N). O gets 33+16+4=53. N gets 33+11+2=46.

Based solely on like/dislike, and assumes dislike doesn’t turn into “don’t bother to vote”.

personal bs that this blog, somehow makes me share.

My car is toast. I’m working on a new one, but since I haven’t had a payment in 6 years, the numbers are killing me.

Looking further. Really, I may rent a car for the week so not to jump into something stupid.

Today I’m tired of it. So I’m going to learn the freaking bus route and go shopping. Welcome to the real world.

re: #144 ProLifeLiberal

No, that’s not what Nate Silver says. Mondale and Hart were tied in the polls at this point, while Romney has a 19 point lead.

What he says is two-part.
1) Based on the existing cases since 1972, Romney’s got a 98% chance of winning the nomination;
2) The list of cases is WAY too small to trust that percentage chance. After all, in 2004 the same formula said Clinton was a 99% favorite over Obama.

re: #160 Coracle

The Republicans out here in CA are a minority and they’re completely wacko. More than anything they want another wacko just like them.

In particular, since they are so wacko, they rarely can win a general because their primaries reward the ideological extreme. Schwarzenegger won because the recall allowed him to skip the primary. Wilson won because he was a really good campaigner. I’ve never understood how Deukmajean won. I think I was out of the country.

re: #23 Sergey Romanov

Maybe I’m giving a wrong analogy here… but let’s take Jack Chick. He always exposes Catholics, but he was pretty sympathetic when it came to Russian Orthodox Church under Bolsheviks. In that strip they were simply “Russian Christians” or something like that, despite saints, icons and whatnot. So it’s situational. Against a humongously greater “evil” they may accept even Romney, but Catholics are just much nearer on the Christian continuum.

Just a guess, but I think a lot of the hostility is left over from the Reformation. Since the main beef was with Rome, Eastern Orthodox Christians wouldn’t have been as reviled as Roman Catholics.

Disagree. He’ll pander to them in coded language. Ronald Reagan’s States Right Speech in Philadelphia, Mississippi came right after the RNC. Talk about a wink and a nod to the bigot wing.

I believe in states’ rights…. I believe we have distorted the balance of our government today by giving powers that were never intended to be given in the Constitution to that federal establishment.

The people who simply hate Obama will hold their noses and vote for Romney. Because in many of their minds, Romney is the one thing Obama can never be. But for many in the middle who are not as dialed in as some of us are, Romney looks and sounds every bit the centrist when he chooses to. Many voters won’t even give a shit until after the conventions. And by then, both candidates will be in their “general election” mode.

In tough times, the challenger has the advantage of being able to say “your plans aren’t working.” Obama did it to great advantage in 2008, because he was the new guy and could hammer away. But now he has a record to DEFEND. And Romney can hammer away. Should be good times ….
