We Got Mail from a Birther

“The left’s murder of freedom of thought in this nation”
LGF • Views: 23,318

Birtherism, the strange mental aberration that afflicts an amazing number of right wingers, has definitely not subsided. The release of Barack Obama’s original long-form birth certificate had no effect on the delusion.

In fact, I predict we’re going to see another huge resurgence of this insanity if/when Barack Obama is reelected, because at its core Birtherism is thinly masked racism: the refusal to believe that the first black President of the US is actually “one of us.” It takes the form of doubting his citizenship, but you don’t have to listen very hard to hear the echoes of “Go back to Africa where you belong!”

Today one of these obsessed people found LGF by searching Yahoo for “judge atlanta obama birth certificate” (we’re the first result), and clicking through to our post about the Georgia judge who ordered President Obama to appear in court so that Birther loon Orly Taitz could question him. After reading the post, our visitor decided to give me a piece of his mind and used the contact form to send this message — a picture of the distorted thinking of the Birther conspiracy theorist, full of incoherent rage and whiny victimhood:

Until you guys have PROOF and I mean BEYOND A DOUBT proof that Obozo was born in the USA you have no right to try and marginalize those who doubt it. Just like “Rules for Radicals” you take the cue to ostracize, belittle and demonize those who oppose you. We are witnessing the left’s murder of freedom of thought in this nation.

On the contrary, I would never try to murder a Birther’s freedom of thought — it’s too much fun to mock these idiots.

Sounds like the entire rwnj confederate right follows Alinsky these days, if that's the case.

So I just looked up "Rules for Radicals". Alinksy.

Does these people really, really think Alinsky is big on the left? I come from San Francisco, I've worked on an honest-to-god progressive's mayoral campaign, I've volunteered at the Freelancer's Union trying to form solidarity and get legislation passed. I've never hard anyone, ever, reference Alinsky, seen any of his writings, etc.

Just like “Rules for Radicals”

surely newt's own well known manual for hate speech far exceeds anything the once obscure alinsky every came up with in terms of being immoral and cynical

9 Targetpractice  Sun, Jan 22, 2012 5:08:24pm

I've yet to see any of the GOP candidates produce their long-form birth certificates. Is their citizenship also in question?

True story but I got Saul Alinsky mixed up with Saul Bellow when I first heard the name. I remember seeing Saul Bellow in a literature anthology I had and I believe Bellows was from Chicago too and a fellow Jew. So yeah I got Saul the Chicago writer mixed up with Saul the Chicago radical.

No proof will ever be good enough for these idiots.

As far as the law is concerned Obama's certified certificate of birth that he released years ago was legally sufficient to establish his birth in Hawaii, and therefore his natural born citizenship. Now the Hawaii Department of Health provides a freakin link to the White House's certified copy of his "long form" birth certificate. These lunatics never seem to stop to wonder why Hawaii would acknowledge a forgery as the President's certified birth certificate.

54 Altermite  Sun, Jan 22, 2012 5:31:52pm

The question was basically 'something something quote from Alinksky's rules for radicals, what do you think?. Someone who came out strongly for it was generally considered suspicious.

"Until you guys have PROOF and I mean BEYOND A DOUBT proof that Obozo was born in the USA you have no right to try and marginalize those who doubt it."

Actually we do have the right to marginalize stupid ideas, as much as you have the right to espouse such ideas.

The criterion for 'proof' is beyond a reasonable doubt, something you and yours have gone well beyond.

"Just like “Rules for Radicals” you take the cue to ostracize, belittle and demonize those who oppose you."

So, you find a common tactic used in common dispute, something I do not agree with even though I am definitely left of centre, and since this common tactic is also in a published work you want to imply the evil you assign to the published work is inherent in the use and the users of the tactic.

Such a poorly thought out and illogical correlation.

"We are witnessing the left’s murder of freedom of thought in this nation."

Expressing our own free speech at your idiotic ideas does absolutely nothing to threaten your freedom of thought. If we imprisoned you, tortured you, or in some other way attempted to force you to stop thinking those thoughts then your freedom would be endangered. What is being done - embarrassing you, despite your whining and playing the victim, is lightyears from that state.

Grow up, and get over it.

I love the way the Birthers, like the Twoofers, try to shift the burden of proof onto us. Guess what, little Nirther friends, you have to prove that Obama's birth certificate is false, NOT the other way around. Expect much seething, whining, and complaints if this is ever pointed out to them.

Yep, but I'm sure every one of them, the moment the banhammer came down on their heads, had the same thought: "I didn't do anything wrong!"

I had an aunt and uncle who, while married, would fight at the drop of the hat. Growing up, I remember more than one family reunion that broke down towards the end because they'd have a very public spat in front of everybody until one marched off. And both always swore up and down that it was the other's fault, that they'd done nothing wrong.

What caused most of the fights? One or the other doing or saying something that got misinterpreted and popping the cap off weeks/months of little things that had gone unremarked on. Most of it stupid shit that would cause the rest of us to only roll our eyes at how petty and childish they were acting.

What's actually the point of dings on LGF? On some boards, you get certain privileges for rating other people's comments, etc. On LGF, I see that it might help some people who may choose to only read highly-rated comments, but other than that, it doesn't seem to have any cumulative impact. I sort of see up-dings as a "high five" for a good or at least humorous post, while down-dings are the equiv of old-style "GAZE" comments that would flood the topic. Plus, a surplus of the former is a way of finding comments that stand-out for one reason or another while the latter is a way of making it clear to trolls their brainfarts are unwelcome or shaming those who should know better.

Romney, not to be out-wingnutted...

Romney drew big applause for his attacks on Obama as well, which mostly stuck to his usual stump speech warning of an “entitlement society” and contained plenty of pointed lines.

“I don’t think he understands the power of free people and free enterprise,” he said. “I think he would change, fundamentally, America.”

Here dings seem to be like saying "true that" to comments. You can scroll through a thread and quickly see the good stuff. The upvoted comments are clever or very insightful, as well as the occasional real life post from a community member. Downvotes don't occur here as often as they do on a site like Reddit; it is more of a self-policing mechanism. There's usually something pretty wrong when it occurs.

The sinking of the M/S Estonia had some interesting issues with it, and many victims families want the investigation reopened.

The only thing that gives this believablity is the fact a Swedish Customs Officer late said Sweden was shipping stuff it probably shouldn't have been.

re: #109 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

My humble opinion... after being here for the last 10 odd years, it's a lot of jealousy and tender egos on their part. It turned into this thing where martyrdom was (is) preferable to flouncing. Death by cop.... Ban by Charles, whatever, they wait for it. I expect one other who ssswwoorre on a stack of Bibles that he would nevverrrr go to *that* site, will be there by week's end. I'd say it's sad, but then again, it's not. It's quite pathetic actually.

Romney also continued his recent more focused criticisms of Gingrich, the candidate who until just a few days ago Romney had been free to ignore. “Look, this is a critical time for America. We are choosing someone who will lead our country at a very critical time. People are suffering in this country right now. And I spent my life in the private sector. I understand how to create jobs and how to get America strong again,” Romney said.

“And I’m running against, in the case of Speaker Gingrich, someone who has never worked in the private sector, who spent his life Washington and has been working as a lobbyist. And he doesn’t call it officially a lobbyist, but that’s what it is. And I simply cannot imagine America being led by a person whose sole experience is not inside the private sector, but is inside Washington. I just don’t think Washington can fix Washington.”

RealClimate is pointing to CMU's Vision Prize effort (in order to encourage scientists to sign up.)

While I am thankful that there are people out there who want to document what the scientific community really has discovered, and in this case it is Carnegie Mellon U. trying to corral as many scientists as possible, I am inherently skeptical that this will make any difference in the attitudes of the electorate at large.

Abstract, highly technical subjects like climatology (or for that matter evolution) are full of obtuse language and sophisticated quantitative thinking and it takes work, real work, to delve into such subjects.

Rather, what I see in our society is that all the furor from the reactionary crowd over topics like climate change is an emotional venting, of feelings not necessarily originating with the surface topic at hand. Like with birtherism being a veil for racism, raging about climate change as some evil conspiracy by the UN to take control of the US is also an outlet for deeper emotions (in this case I ascribe it to fear, lots of fear and insecurity.)

As Ron (and Rand) Paul demonstrate, being a doctor doesn't keep one from embracing looney ideas.

Over at Afarensis blog they take apart the claims of an IDiot doctor who actually got something published in a university medical journal:

A Response to Joseph Kuhn’s Dissecting Darwinism

That Baylor would publish an "irreducible complexity" article is probably more disturbing than just another medical professional being a creationist.

Get this paragraph written by the doctor:

[...]

When the Texas State Board of Education voted to recognize the weaknesses of Darwinian evolution in explaining the origin of the species, it was a result of 3 full days of intense debate and scientific dispute. In 2011, when new textbooks were presented to the State Board of Education, 9 out of 10 failed to provide the mandated supplementary curricula, which would include both positive and negative aspects of evolution (44). Moreover, several of the textbooks continued to incorrectly promote the debunked Miller-Urey origin of life experiment, the long-discredited claims about nonfunctional appendix and tonsils, and the fraudulent embryo drawings from Ernst Haeckel. In essence, current biology students, aspiring medical students, and future scientists are not being taught the whole story. Rather, evidence suggests that they continue to receive incorrect and incomplete material that exaggerates the eff ect of random mutation and natural selection to account for DNA, the cell, or the transition from species to species.

[...]

Um... the Texas SBoE decision was roiled and boiled in creationism, and it was 110% politics in the end, not "scientific dispute", whatever that means.

Really, that Baylor published this stuff ought to be concerning.

I believe the official affiliation is with the Baptist General Convention.

Nevertheless, the point is as you indicated - students will be taught at Baylor by creationists (along with non-creationists, I think Baylor doesn't force faculty to be creationists.) How it plays out in the students' futures I don't know, but I do know that the article by Kuhn is full of poor thinking.

One of the Koch brothers is funding PBS programs. Certain episodes of Nova I've seen, anyway.

They also fund the Smithsonian, including evolution exhibits.

The Kochs aren't creationists, they just know how to get the creationists to go to work for them to make more money.

Not so much a dog whistle as the standard slam against 'career politicians'.

Still off the mark, though. IIRC, Obama has held private sector jobs, hasn't he?

Can't help them. Which is a pity. You would think that a University's Board would have some say about what is published, especially in the light that it places the U.

I don't think he's ever worked in a corporation. Non-profit to university to state legislator to senator to president.

community organizer, taught law, yeah. Seriously. I am tired of this pathetic slam. Obama's spent most of his life public sector. To a tool like Mitt that's not a real job. I dare Mitt to tell my mother who's been in the federal government since the early Reagan years she's "never had a job."

Which is fine. Other than being governor for four years, Mitt has little experience in government. Sword cuts two ways.

Agreed. That one is something I've seen deployed against both white and black politicians. It's about someone's career path, not their race.

I ask HappyWarrior to retract his 'dog whistle' comment.

From back in 1997, when Newt became unpopular with conservatives:

Newt Melts (Mar 30, 1997, By Major Garrett)

...It was the hottest budget news in Washington since the two government shutdowns. The Washington media happily declared the unconditional Republican surrender on the issue that has united and galvanized the party since 1980 -- cutting taxes to balance the budget.

The Gingrich announcement infuriated conservatives who have always held that cutting taxes is essential to shrinking the size of government as a means of getting to a balanced budget. "It is troubling to me for us to move away from lowering the tax burden of working Americans," says Rep. David Dreier, a California Republican. "It's capitulating. It's a hell of a mistake. Clinton has $ 100 billion of tax cuts in his budget. Why let him be the tax cutter?"

The move on taxes followed two lesser acts of political perfidy conservatives have yet to comprehend fully. First came Gingrich's outreach to Jesse Jackson at the State of the Union. Then came his huddle with Alec Baldwin and the likelihood of continued funding of the National Endowment for the Arts (despite a supposedly ironclad written agreement Gingrich negotiated between moderate and conservative factions in 1995 to abolish all NEA funding in fiscal year 1998).

But fury was not the only reaction Gingrich elicited among House Republicans, particularly conservatives. Where once there was awe and gratitude, there is now disdain and disgust. Palpably, one can feel the mood overtake the House Republican conference that the time has come for a change at the top.

Honestly, though, the charge has some merit, in that Romney can claim actual experience in running a business and Obama cannot. It's overblown, I'll grant you, but its not entirely off base,

I've got no idea what he did before or during his undergrad. From wikipedia, he worked at Business international corporation for a year after graduation, then NYPIRG for a year before he got into community organizing. He also spend two summers at law firms during law school.

It would be one thing if Obama was the challenger but he's been president for three years now running a far bigger organization (country) than Romney has ever run. I got pissed and dog whistle wasn't the right word here but that attitude really ticks me off. I see it alot from businessman types like him and it's very arrogant not to mention condescending.

And thank you for pulling the 'dog whistle' part. So far, Mitt Romney hasn't gone race-baiting. If he does clearly, then we could consider throwing that flag for his line. But Mitt Romney is not Newt Gingrich, and thus we should not be nearly as quick to find against him. If Newt has said the same thing, them throwing the flag would be justifiable.

Nice try, but Mitt Romney has moved to the far right in every other way, and now he's joining the race-baiters. He wants to win, and he knows what he has to do to win with the debased right wing.
