Newt Gingrich: Big Idea Man, or Right Wing Crackpot?

One big idea: death penalty for smuggling 2 ounces of pot
Politics • Views: 21,672

Since malevolent gnome Newt Gingrich has a reputation as the right’s “idea man,” Ezra Klein is wondering: What are Newt Gingrich’s big ideas?

On Saturday’s edition of “Up With Chris Hayes,” Gary Johnson brought up an old Newt Gingrich idea I hadn’t heard before: Putting individuals who brought more than two ounces of marijuana into the United States to death. That sounded extreme, even for Gingrich. So I looked it up. And sure enough, there it is: “The Drug Importer Death Penalty Act of 1996.” What makes the bill even more amazing is that Gingrich himself is a confessed pot smoker. When he was young, he said, experimenting with drugs “was a sign we were alive and in graduate school in that era.”

Asked at Thursday night’s debate to name his campaign regrets, Gingrich said that he wished he had been “a big-ideas, big-solutions, Internet-based campaign from day one.” But like Ross Douthat, I’m at a loss to name even one big idea animating Gingrich’s campaign.

The only big idea that comes to mind is his proposal to fire union janitors in public schools, and put poor kids to work swabbing out the toilets instead.

Actually, if we put kids into manual labor slavery, we would save a lot of money.

It would be a crappy thing to do, and shortsighted as well, when all those kids failed to get a proper education.

The sad thing most of Newt's supporters don't want to admit is that his "big ideas" and Romney's bear striking resemblances. The only difference being that Romney's are fluid, prone to changing with the ebb and flow of the base, while Newt's are the proverbial immovable object.

It comes down to sales pitch, and right now, Newt has the strong advantage.

Gingrich only idea is that he should be president.

So we're saying Newt's idea of putting millions of mirrors in orbit to eliminate the need for highway lighting at night might be flawed in some way?

I think Newt is more like a Troll than a Gnome.

That tears it. I'm not just going to sit here idly while you insult the noble, gnomish people with such baseless comparisons!

If they love Jesus enough, then they're guaranteed to be rich and successful.

How do we keep these mirrors focused on the highway instead of, say, my bedroom while I'm trying to sleep?

“I Think Grandiose Thoughts”
-Newt Gingrich

Not only is pretentiousness strongly implied by the term, but grandiosity is also the #2 trait on the Psychopath Test.

Here's an idea for Newt: Parents will be able to profit from their children's slave labor, but those child slaves will only be worth 3/5 of a standard deduction.

So Newt wanted us to be more like the Communist China of the 90's?

And why would we subsidize China's and Russia's highway lighting? They better chip in to pay for it.

He must have thought that up while he was alive and in graduate school and taking hits of LSD.

I tend to think fondly of gnomes.

Newt is not a gnome.

The man is so incredibly backwards. In fact, he PRIDES himself on his backwardness. Yesterday on Meet The Press, he invoked Ronald Reagan at least 4 times.

Obama consistently talks about the future. The future of technology, the future of fuels, future of education and healthcare. Moving forward. I don't know what Obama thinks of MJ. I think it's a states rights issue. However, it's ridiculous that MJ isn't legalized and we're coming much closer to that now than anytime before.

Although it's not hard to understand why someone like Newt is stuck in the 50s.

We'll use them during the day to reflect light away from Earth in order to reduce global warming. That should allow you to get some sleep.

This janitor thing is vintage Newt. Back in the 1990s he unveiled, around Christmas time no less, his "Big Idea" to take poor kids (i.e., black kids) away from their single moms and put them into state run orphanages.

His argument then was similar to now, that the single mothers are all on welfare and don't work for a living (bad role models, etc.) Then, as now, his data was bogus. Labor dept statistics showed then that about 70% of the parents he was slandering had jobs, just as available stats now show that most of the people on food stamps are white, contrary to his claims.

But facts are not anything to stop Newt, because he realizes that his followers will keep believing the prejudices he exploits no matter what the data actually shows. Just yesterday, after he had surely heard many times that most food stamp recipients are white people, he was bragging to a reporter that he is not going to be silenced by "political correctness" and offered as his example of speaking what's true that "most people on food stamps are black.

(The exact stats are 34.4% are white, 21.2% are African American, ref: page 59, of [Link: www.fns.usda.gov...] . )

re: #24 krypto

Slight correction - I should have posted that most food stamps recipients are NOT black and that more white people are on food stamps than African Americans, not that most food stamp recipients are white (the majority are all the "others").

Much as I dislike Ezra Klein (recall the Russert affair) he's on the money with this.

My friend thinks Gingrich looks like an evil Keebler elf. I tend to agree.
