Excerpts from the State of the Union Speech

“I intend to fight obstruction with action”
Politics • Views: 36,589

Via The Plum Line:

Think about the America within our reach: A country that leads the world in educating its people. An America that attracts a new generation of high-tech manufacturing and high-paying jobs. A future where we’re in control of our own energy, and our security and prosperity aren’t so tied to unstable parts of the world. An economy built to last, where hard work pays off, and responsibility is rewarded…

The defining issue of our time is how to keep that promise alive. No challenge is more urgent. No debate is more important. We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well, while a growing number of Americans barely get by. Or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules. What’s at stake are not Democratic values or Republican values, but American values. We have to reclaim them…

As long as I’m President, I will work with anyone in this chamber to build on this momentum. But I intend to fight obstruction with action, and I will oppose any effort to return to the very same policies that brought on this economic crisis in the first place.

No, we will not go back to an economy weakened by outsourcing, bad debt, and phony financial profits. Tonight, I want to speak about how we move forward, and lay out a blueprint for an economy that’s built to last – an economy built on American manufacturing, American energy, skills for American workers, and a renewal of American values.”…

Let’s never forget: Millions of Americans who work hard and play by the rules every day deserve a government and a financial system that does the same. It’s time to apply the same rules from top to bottom: No bailouts, no handouts, and no copouts. An America built to last insists on responsibility from everybody.

Fox Nation's spin on the Romney tax return release.

Headline:

WHO'S GREEDY? Obama Gave 1% to Charity, Romney Gave 15%

From the President's 2010 returns:

[Link: money.cnn.com...]

The Obamas reported paying $453,770 in federal taxes. They donated $245,075, or 14% of their income, to 36 different charities. Fisher House Foundation, a charity that works with veterans, took home the biggest single donation.

Also being overlooked by Fox, there was a further 1.4 million dollars given directly to charity in 2010:

[Link: voices.washingtonpost.com...]

Three months after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, President Obama announced Thursday the charities that will benefit from his $1.4 million cash award.

It seems to be an avg of Romney's charitable donations claimed in his current returns and his 2011 estimate. The extremely brief Fox nation article just has this little text table:

Tax year Taxable income Charitable donations Donations as % of income
2010 $21.7 million $2.98 million 13.73%
2011 (est) $20.9 million $4 million 19.14%

Romney won't be releasing any further tax returns because it's likely that he took a huge capital loss in 2008 and/or 2009 and ended up paying 0% in at least one of those two years.

You're being deliberately dense. The United States was never going to see any of the Keystone XL oil. The pipeline was going to go from Canada through the US to our ports, then sent overseas.

What part of that is hard to understand?

The pipeline was routed to pass through some very sensitive areas (like, the Oglala Aquifer which is the water source for 40% of the United States) and there was not adequate guarantee that it would not contaminate the water supply.

So there's that.

It not because Canadians suck.

I hope the delivery will be good.... I read the excerpts and I came away thinking Obama could be using far more forceful language than he is using here (think FDR, for example). He is speaking to what most Americans now see as a "do-nothing" Congress. The Presidency is often described as a bully pulpit. Obama could really use the opportunity to hit home economic truths, dispel right-wing myth-making, and forcefully assert his economic agenda with all the free air time he is getting.

Here you go:

Energy Security: Tar Sand will not Reduce Dependence on Foreign Oil

Keystone XL will not lessen U.S. dependence on foreign oil, but transport Canadian oil to American refineries for export to overseas markets.

Keystone XL is an export pipeline. According to presentations to investors, Gulf Coast refiners plan to refine the cheap Canadian crude supplied by the pipeline into diesel and other products for export to Europe and Latin America. Proceeds from these exports are earned tax-free. Much of the fuel refined from the pipeline’s heavy crude oil will never reach U.S. drivers’ tanks.

Chunky, your talking points are about a week or so out of date; Keystone XL will probably be constructed eventually, just hopefully not anywhere near the Ogallala aquifer . Also, never mind the fact Nebraska's Republican governor and both of its senators (one D, one R) have voiced serious displeasure and disapproval with the disputed routes.

51 The Questionable Timing of a Flea  Tue, Jan 24, 2012 3:58:02pm

re: #28 chunkymonkey

Was there something wrong with the Canadian oil then? Or was it pure politics. Of course you are going to say that it's politics and blame the republicans. The Democrats NEVER play politics, right?

The presentations on the pipeline vastly inflated the job count, conflated temporary versus permanent employment in their pitch, and downplayed the significance of safety and environmental issues. It didn't stand up to scrutiny from independent reviewers. In terms of circulation of assets, all of the money pools around the refineries and the strip miners: the people along the pipeline get only a tiny stream that diminishes to a trickle after the building completes.

Had that presentation been made to me as an investor, I would have laughed them out of the room.

To say nothing of the distribution of risks: anyone dependent on the Ogallala aquifer takes it in the teeth if the XL pipe has an issue.

For people that talk about running government like a business, the GOP reps currently in office seem to be utterly negligent in actually researching feasibility, cost/benefit, and long term profit of works projects.

52 chunkymonkey  Tue, Jan 24, 2012 3:58:08pm

re: #41 Alexzander

Keystone XL will not lessen U.S. dependence on foreign oil, but transport Canadian oil to American refineries for export to overseas markets.

On its face, this doesn't make any sense. Let's see... if I were to produce a gallon of glue and then sell it overseas when I need the gallon of glue here, why would I sell? Are prices higher in China? I doubt it. Are they higher in Europe? Maybe, but if there really is a world market, then seems it'd be cheaper to sell it locally if the demand is there, rather than transport it across the world. Shipping isn't free.

Unless...

54 goddamnedfrank  Tue, Jan 24, 2012 3:59:08pm

Recovering tar sands oil is an incredibly inefficient and energy intensive process, requiring a very high price to make profitable:

Because it is so viscous (thick), it also requires dilution with lighter hydrocarbons to make it transportable by pipelines.

...

About two tons of tar sands are required to produce one barrel of oil. Roughly 75% of the bitumen can be recovered from sand. After oil extraction, the spent sand and other materials are then returned to the mine, which is eventually reclaimed.

In-situ production methods are used on bitumen deposits buried too deep for mining to be economically recovered. These techniques include steam injection, solvent injection, and firefloods, in which oxygen is injected and part of the resource burned to provide heat. So far steam injection has been the favoured method. Some of these extraction methods require large amounts of both water and energy (for heating and pumping).

If only 75% of the bitumen is recoverable, this implies that much of the waste sand and water remains contaminated. Also, all the energy represented by mining, heating, extracting, transporting with lighter already refined fractions and refining of the tar sands bitumen, comes with its own cost in greenhouse gas emissions.

Heh.

On a serious note, this kind of rhetoric spewing from the Republican candidates, though not new, is dangerous. Surely, they must know this. They MUST know that.
Also, who the hell is Alinsky?
I know I'm only 26, but come on. Wasn't he some crackpot lefty in the 60's?
Newt the prick, clearly wants a culture war most sane Americans got over a long time ago.

Alinsky was like the Cesar Chavez of community organizers, although he preceded Chavez. He worked in Chicago, but died long before Obama moved there. Still, he's called one of Obama's main influences, like it was a bad thing.

He is generally considered to be the founder of modern community organizing, and has been compared to Thomas Paine as being "one of the great American leaders of the nonsocialist left."

...

...and conservative author William F. Buckley said he was "very close to being an organizational genius."

Assuming there's no such thing as cognitive dissonace, Fox's Ayn Rand worshipping Tea Partiers shouldn't care about either man's charitable giving:

My views on charity are very simple. I do not consider it a major virtue and, above all, I do not consider it a moral duty. There is nothing wrong in helping other people, if and when they are worthy of the help and you can afford to help them. I regard charity as a marginal issue. What I am fighting is the idea that charity is a moral duty and a primary virtue.

They all think that they're gonna win the Life Lottery tomorrow, happen upon a rich relative or a big job promotion, and soon be part of the "rich." Think that's part of the modern difference between liberalism and conservatism, the former believing that the system's unbalanced and needs to be fixed, while the latter believes it's perfectly balanced and those who don't succeed at becoming rich just didn't work hard enough.

Some FactCheck reference for Gingrich "not a lobbyist" arguments:

While it’s true that Gingrich has never been a registered lobbyist, a recent, in-depth New York Times analysis presents a murkier picture of Gingrich’s advocacy.

According to the story, although Gingrich routinely wrote into contracts, “does not provide lobbying services of any kind,” the company also boasted of “contacts at the highest levels” of state and federal government. Gingrich, the story states, “has made millions of dollars while helping companies promote their services and gain access to state and federal officials. In a variety of instances, documents and interviews show, Mr. Gingrich arranged meetings between executives and officials, and salted his presentations to lawmakers with pitches for his clients, who pay as much as $200,000 a year to belong to his Center for Health Transformation.”

The "Alinsky" meme because of some tenuous connection to Obama by way of Chicago and community organizing. Apparently they were on a charity board together, like once. At least one pundit...I think Beck...has also elevated his book Rules for Radicals to a role as grimoire used by sinister leftist agitators to overthrow 'Murica and the status quo. The book isn't nearly as sinister as portrayed, but it is provocative in the sense the it talks about motivating people to get up and participate, which means fanning their anger and exposing bottled-up resentments. They play this up as sinister and cabal-ish, but what's being described is getting people to air grievances and have them addressed, not run riot. The fearmongers, of course, don't talk about the chapter on ethics and the need to gauge ends versus means.

The even more pathetic part is the right use "Alinsky" tactics routinely even as they demonize them.

Over 70% of Americans in that category receive no capital gains income...

Colorado Rep. Doug Lamborn to skip State of the Union

"There's no job requirement of any kind that a congressman be there," Lamborn said. "I've been getting more and more of an uneasy feeling as I watched the president revert to campaign mode. He's only out there campaigning. He's not reaching out."

Maybe the president heard McConnell, and figured why bother.

“The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told National Journal‘s Major Garrett in October.

Fox News’ Bret Baier asked McConnell Sunday if that was still his major objective.

“Well, that is true,” McConnell replied. “That’s my single most important political goal, along with every active Republican in the country.”

Let's be honest, if they weren't worried about looking bad with the public, most of the GOP would sit out this SOTU. No need to apologize. My state gave us Rick Perry, and Ron Paul, and... there was a third thing.... no... can't do it. Oops.

@BorowitzReport
#SOTU Trivia: In the hour it takes the President to give his speech, Gingrich could earn $30,000 for being a historian.

Right, which is why we killed the pipeline from Canada, heaven forbid we get our energy from a place as unstable as that, eh?

It hasn't been killed. The GOP put a political poison pill on it to prevent the route from being evaluated properly; forcing a step back to the beginning of the evaluation.

Have you been listening to FOX again?

164 Four More Tears  Tue, Jan 24, 2012 5:48:27pm

Is the audience supposed to remain quiet for this event?

They're allowed (encouraged) to clap when they hear something they like; they're not supposed to vocalize.

Thanks, The Wife feels the same way. People think that a lot of mundane jobs are with out risks. You can get killed, just as fast working on plumbing as electricity.
