What a peculiar exercise the SOTU is. I heartily endorse it on the grounds that it not only highlights our political differences but also celebrates our propensity to debate differences. It really should be read in context for what it is. It is an opportunity for the party in power to highlight its agenda and attempt to set the terms of the coming contests. Pretty cool when you think about it.

During the 6 Day War? The US actually wasn't the big arms supplier to Israel at that point - the US became more invested in Israeli security during the Yom Kippur War; the commitment during the First Gulf War was due to Israel being a neutral party in that conflict and coming under attack from Iraq.
We continue providing arms sales and other aid; and Israel is a tech incubator for US companies.

3.25 PM: I just got briefed a little, in a rare moment of outreach from the White House communications team. Everything is embargoed, so no details. And being briefed about the contents is not the same as listening Obama deliver the case. But sheesh. Get some caffeine ready.
5.35 PM: It turns out I shouldn't have blogged that I was even briefed about the SOTU. I thought I just had to keep the contents to myself. One thing you learn pretty quickly about this White House: transparency is a theory, not a reality. Just watch it tonight, as I will (I don't have the text), and make your own mind up, as I will, in real time.
9:00 PM - 10:10 PM: Nothing but complaints. Hates the speech. Hates everything about it. Hates the policy ideas, the rhetoric, they didn't include what he wanted to hear, everything about it sucks like a Hoover. Not that he's bitter about getting a phone call over printing something that had been embargoed.

Talking up the debt and using Greece and Spain in the same breath in order to scare the shit out of the populous.
Which is bullshit, all ends up. The UK and the USA have more than enough in the tank in terms of tax revenues they can call on to sort it out without swinging cuts to public services and jobs.
The UK is doing "austerity" right now and we are headed into a double dip recession.

Colbert on cheering crowds at debates:
"Debates should be more like a wet t-shirt contest... By the way, Newt Gingrich would totally win a wet t-shirt contest."
One of these days, I'm gonna become rich and famous by discovering a way to stab out one's own mind eye.

New right wing talking point: America must return to the incandescent light bulb standard!
All of America's problems can be traced back to the abandonment of the morally superior incandescent light bulb.
Do you have any idea how many people that work for the EZ-bake over got laid off because of this. Not a laughing matter///

Why should their constituents care? Are they reading under an incandescent light bulb?. No. They're all sitting in front of their television all day long watching Fox News.

CFL bulbs are a stealth shariah socialist plot to pollute our precious table lamps. Incandescence or death!
I have a few, but I'm trying to hold out for inexpensive and efficient LED lighting.

It is humorous watching Republicans argue against new regs that control mercury emissions from coal power plants get their knickers in a twist over CFLs because breaking one releases a minute amount of mercury.

The GOP present an oversimplified view of the world. It is full of catch phrases and cliches and ideas that have been conserved -- many since the age of antiquity. They're even referential to Bronze Age ideas. Their words are like porn for the soul of their constituency.

Ban insider trading by members of Congress (and someone is apparently booing/catcalling?)
Really? So Obama is basically supporting the Stock Act? Booing? That's actual authored by a Republican. One of the few things that came out of the GOP in recent years. But Cantor and others are opposed to it.

That's actually an interesting thought experiment to put forth to Republicans. Namely, if you took the number of CFLs whose mercury content would equal the amount of mercury pumped out by a single coal plant in a year, and used them to replace an equal number of incandescent bulbs of identical wattage, how many coal power plants could be shut down due to the energy savings?

They actually booed Ron Paul's "golden rule" quote. That was interesting as well. Regardless of how you feel about the context and Ron Paul it really was the "golden rule" of "do onto others..." It's surprising to see many who I assume are Christians in the audience boo that. Again, outside of Ron Paul. This was in South Carolina.

But knowing them they were probably booing the moral equivalency or perception therein.

Really, cause the Deobandis are in charge of something like 65% of the Masjids in the country, with Salafis having about 6%.
19 out of 25 of the Islamic Seminaries follow Deoband thought, which produces 80% of the Ulema that are domestically trained.
At least in this regard, there is something wrong.
Unfortunately, I am for freedom of religion. Open hatred and incitement is cracked down upon here, but if that's not happening I don't pay much heed to religious affairs. They bore me quite frankly.
One must remember though, that there are still schools in the UK which do teach open hatred and fear, those are in Northern Ireland and have done more damage to the UK than any number of Mosques or Islamic seminaries ever will.
The hatred between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland is still a hot war war in many places and while there are regular riots among white Christians that cause damage and spread tremendous fear and uncertainty about economic investment and community cohesion. I shall be paying more heed to those than the internal wrangles of a minority faith in the UK of whom I know many many members that are all perfectly well adjusted to the western world and tremendously more so than many of the Christians in Northern Ireland/.

"Unfortunately" because there is still organised religion in this day and age, it's not something I'm a fan of at all in general terms but while it exists people are free to practice as they wish within boundaries laid down by law.
