I have nothing against environmentally friendly technology, as long as it's an adequate replacement for the old. I don't want you to give me something that's 100% cleaner but 0% as effective.

Smart regulation to prevent irresponsible behavior. Rules to prevent financial fraud, regulate medical devices - make the market better.

What a peculiar exercise the SOTU is. I heartily endorse it on the grounds that it not only highlights our political differences but also celebrates our propensity to debate differences. It really should be read in context for what it is. It is an opportunity for the party in power to highlight its agenda and attempt to set the terms of the coming contests. Pretty cool when you think about it.

Andrew Sullivan

3.25 PM: I just got briefed a little, in a rare moment of outreach from the White House communications team. Everything is embargoed, so no details. And being briefed about the contents is not the same as listening Obama deliver the case. But sheesh. Get some caffeine ready.

5.35 PM: It turns out I shouldn't have blogged that I was even briefed about the SOTU. I thought I just had to keep the contents to myself. One thing you learn pretty quickly about this White House: transparency is a theory, not a reality. Just watch it tonight, as I will (I don't have the text), and make your own mind up, as I will, in real time.

9:00 PM - 10:10 PM: Nothing but complaints. Hates the speech. Hates everything about it. Hates the policy ideas, the rhetoric, they didn't include what he wanted to hear, everything about it sucks like a Hoover. Not that he's bitter about getting a phone call over printing something that had been embargoed.

Those jobs don't count, even though the growth is all in the private sector, since public sector jobs have declined. You see, these are jobs created in a Dem administration. It runs against calcified gop orthodoxy to consider that anything good could happen under an Obama administration. Thus facts must be denied.

Which is bullshit, all ends up. The UK and the USA have more than enough in the tank in terms of tax revenues they can call on to sort it out without swinging cuts to public services and jobs.

The UK is doing "austerity" right now and we are headed into a double dip recession.

True on both counts.

My thing here is the fact that there is a real issue with not just radicalization in mosques in the UK, but in in much of society. The riots last year. The growth of the Far Right.

There is something very, very wrong right now in British Society that I can't put my finger on. But I have to think these are all related.

The radicalisation of mosques is vastly overrated.

The riots and thee hopelessness of youth are worth a thread to themselves.

The very far right are a fringe and nothing electorally on a national basis, and more undercontrol than in any other multiparty democracy in Europe.

Actually the Far Right has been well networked in Europe for the past decade and half, with their youth groups all meeting in one place every summer, etc. Who's the biggest importer or exporter makes for a good debate, which I wish I had time for but I do have to run.

It is humorous watching Republicans argue against new regs that control mercury emissions from coal power plants get their knickers in a twist over CFLs because breaking one releases a minute amount of mercury.

That's actually an interesting thought experiment to put forth to Republicans. Namely, if you took the number of CFLs whose mercury content would equal the amount of mercury pumped out by a single coal plant in a year, and used them to replace an equal number of incandescent bulbs of identical wattage, how many coal power plants could be shut down due to the energy savings?

450 Gus  Tue, Jan 24, 2012 8:57:03pm

They actually booed Ron Paul's "golden rule" quote. That was interesting as well. Regardless of how you feel about the context and Ron Paul it really was the "golden rule" of "do onto others..."
