Marco Rubio: Gingrich’s Ad Bashing ‘Anti-Immigrant’ Romney is ‘Inflammatory’

(Actually, it’s accurate)
Politics • Views: 27,418

This is why I continue to believe that Newt Gingrich has no real chance of becoming the Republican nominee for President; he’s even disliked by most of his own party: Rubio scolds Gingrich camp, says ad bashing ‘anti-immigrant’ Romney is ‘inaccurate, inflammatory’.

Sen. Marco Rubio scolded Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign over a Spanish-language radio ad that accuses rival Mitt Romney of being “anti-immigrant”

“This kind of language is more than just unfortunate. It’s inaccurate, inflammatory, and doesn’t belong in this campaign,” Rubio told The Miami Herald when asked about the ad.

“The truth is that neither of these two men is anti-immigrant,” Rubio said. “Both are pro-legal immigration and both have positive messages that play well in the Hispanic community.”

As for the last sentence in the above quote, it’s obviously false. Both Gingrich and Romney are determinedly anti-immigrant — like most Republicans — and only a dyed in the wool partisan like Rubio would deny it. To understand this, all you need to do is look at Republican “self-deportation” legislation, and Republicans’ universal opposition to the DREAM Act. And it’s even more obvious in this election season, as the candidates have been relentlessly fear-mongering about immigration issues.

I find myself wondering if this is Rubio currying favor in pursuit of a VP nod from Romney.

Partly, I'm sure -- but it's also quite true that some of Gingrich's worst enemies are the Republicans who've had the dubious privilege of working with him.

As odd as it will sound, I think Newt's views on immigration policy are the only ones rooted in reality. We can't deport them all, not without destroying a lot of families and throwing the economy into upheaval. He may be a scumbag, but he's not up there on stage pushing "self-deportation" as the solution.

The establishment of the GOP hates Newt, and has hated that bloated gasbag for ages. It's the Freepers and wingnuts who love him because they think the attacks on him are coming from RINOs and liberals.

Case in point:

Marco Rubio...er...Runio.....er....Rinio....RINO.
---

I never thought Rubio would stoop so low as to defend Romney. He is a RINO now. Is there anyone left in cupboard that is not a RINO?

Let’s see: Beck, Coulter, Rubio, Hume, Christie.......the list is getting really long.
---

Newt's pulling all the RINO’s out for all to see. FUMR! Nice knowing ya. Tool.
---

Maybe this will put an end to speculation of Rubio as a VP candidate. I like what I’ve heard up til now, but here we see the danger of rushing to embrace someone over a few good speeches until their belief system and policy ideas are completely vetted.

Sound familiar?
---

There were always signs of acute RINO-itis in Rubio, starting with his (apparent) disagreement with doing something about illegals.
---

No to Amnesty, No to Illegal immigrants. Legal Immigration is the correct position. Rubio has just turned out to be another special class of victim. If amnesty is Newts stance, that I disagree with, and yes that is a RINO position. Newts not perfect, and maybe he can be pushed to the correct position. IMHO.
---

The GOP RINO establishment has no message other than buying each other and putting names out there that dice other contenders instead of confronting the Dems courageously. They resort to perception games out of the Dem play book. Soon it is going to be racist not to be a RINO... but it is them who are so racist and hiding behind labels and islam and soft stances as a way to move their industrial complex of stupidity.
---

Well, seems "official." MARCO RUBIO by defending Romney so hysterically, and attacking NEWT in turn, seems to indicate he is himself a RINO and to the LEFT of the Republican Party and everything else that entails, most likely, PRO-HOMO and PRO-AMNESTY, and PRO who knows what else....
But again... it's good know NOW!

This is truly confusing me. Anti illegal immigration is a simile for anti immigration entirely? GWB was soft on immigration just like Rick Perry was. Reagan signed the amnesty, famously. I guess border state Republicans run softer on illegal immigration given campaign donations from corporations that want the cheap labor.

Who is anti legal immigration exactly?

I think the assumption is that many people's "anti-illegal immigrant" position covers a more insidious dislike for "the other."

Newt Gingrich was in the Univisión hot seat Wednesday morning, sitting for a feisty-yet-friendly interview that centered on immigration but also ran the gamut of buzz issues for Miami's influential Hispanic electorate.

Gingrich spoke for a half hour with Univisión reporter Jorge Ramos at the network's Doral headquarters as part of a "Meet the Candidates" session hosted along with the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Miami Dade College.

...

Ramos focused largely on immigration, asking Gingrich what he thought about the "self-deportation" idea Romney put forth in Monday's debate in Tampa. Gingrich laughed and replied, "Oh, come on," and asked Ramos a question.

"How close were you breaking out laughing out loud at this fantasy?" he said. Ramos smiled and posed his initial question again.

"You have to live in a world of Swiss bank accounts and Cayman Island bank accounts [making $20 million for no work,] to have some fantasy this far from reality," Gingrich said. "For Romney to believe that somebody's grandmother is going to be so so cut off that she's going to self-deport, I mean, this is an Obama-level fantasy."

You'd think after vaporizing two shuttles and 14 astronauts for that reason, they'd learn to stop worrying about timetables and just get back to listening to their engineers.

NASA's a grand example of how you can't run government like a business, expecting certain results for a specific amount of funding on an arbitrary timeline. Like I noted above, NASA's right now saying we'll be back to the Moon by 2019, but that's assuming that the pricks in Congress don't decide that it's better to pull the funding and spend it on something else, like another round of tax cuts.

One thing to take into account is that pre-Fall of the Wall orbit and space were the "high ground" which had to be claimed in order to take down the Russkies (or Chinese) when the balloon went up.

So pro-space and pro-NASA were hawk territory at that time.

There's some blowback starting regarding the Tucson Unified School District's suspension of Mexican-American Studies - previous LGF thread here: [Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]

Also, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus has called for an investigation into the suspension to determine if the action was racially-motivated.

Congressional caucus wants investigation of Tucson Mexican-American studies ban

(CNN) - As students and faculty of several Tucson high schools protested the end of Mexican-American studies and removal of text books, some members of Congress are seeking an investigation into the ethnic studies ban.

On Monday, hundreds of students from Tucson Magnet High School and from Pueblo, Cholla and Wakefield high schools walked out of morning classes and marched to the Tucson Unified School District’s headquarters to protest the removal of dozens of Mexican-American studies textbooks, as well as the state-ordered suspension of the Mexican-American studies program. A petition aimed at getting the books back in the schools had gained more than 11,000 signatures as of Wednesday morning.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Education’s Civil Rights Office asking it to investigate the language of the law banning ethnic studies and its specific application against Tucson’s Mexican-American studies program.

Of course, given quotes given by the author of the bill -

"That in itself is jarring, but we need to remember the proper context. This is not simply a book-banning; according to Tom Horne, the former state schools' superintendent who designed HB 2281, this is part of a civilizational war. He determined that Mexican American Studies is not based on Greco-Roman knowledge and thus, lies outside of Western Civilization.

- and the fact that the statute was shepherded through the legislature by its now-recalled Senate President, Russell Pearce, whose ties to white nationalist groups have be thoroughly documented, I think this should really be a slam-dunk. However, given the nativist bent that Republicans are currently on, I'm not completely convinced that will happen.

A close win either way won't budge things much. Newt will shrug and say that the media "sabotaged" him with Monday's participation-less debate, while Mitt would respond to a Newt win by declaring that it just means the primaries will go on longer.

I'm starting to think that no one has a real chance of becoming the Republican nominee. A majority of Republicans seem to hate every one of them. Maybe at the convention they'll announce that the results of the primary process are inconclusive and that they'll just go home and try again in 4 years.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. They need to put up a sacrificial lamb, even if it's throwing Crazy Uncle Ron into the ring. If there's no clear nominee by the convention, then the party will likely look for some outside contender to put on the ticket, in the hopes of at least salvaging their Congressional hopes.

I think the RR/RWNJs could tolerate Mitt more as a VP candidate than at the top of the ticket, so long as someone like Newt (or even Santorum, which is an even longer shot) is at the top of the ticket.

The more likely event is, regardless of whether Newt or Mitt are at the top of the ticket, someone seen as attractive to moderates/independents/minorities (and who is not in the POTUS race) will get the VP nom. Rubio is an obvious possibility, but the historical wisdom is that it will likely be someone Southern, male, and white.
