Republican Dominated Indiana State Senate Committee Votes for Creationism in Schools

Yes, it never dies
Politics • Views: 31,630

Creationism, that zombie of the American political scene, rises again — this time in Indiana:

An Indiana Senate committee on Wednesday endorsed teaching creationism in public schools, despite pleas from scientists and religious leaders to keep religion out of science classrooms.

Senate Bill 89 allows school corporations to authorize “the teaching of various theories concerning the origin of life” and specifically mentions “creation science” as one such theory.

State Sen. Scott Schneider, R-Indianapolis, who voted for the measure, said if there are many theories about life’s origins, students should be taught all of them.

[…]

The Republican-controlled Senate Education Committee nevertheless voted 8-2 to send the legislation to the full Senate.

Here’s the substance of the text of the bill:

[EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2012]: Sec. 18. The governing body of a school corporation may require the teaching of various theories concerning the origin of life, including creation science, within the school corporation.

Anyone who has followed this issue in the US can tell right away that even if this bill passed the Indiana Senate, and was eventually signed by the Governor of Indiana, that a federal judge would strike it down right away as unconstitutional (with much precedent in the US court system.)

Yet the creationists still try, over and over.

And, to simply use the phrase “creation science” uncritically informs us of how anti-scientific the authors of that bill are.

The Chairman of the committee was one of the original authors, and given that 4 more signed on as co-authors pretty much guaranteed it would get through the committee.

The State senator mentioned in the news article is one of the co-authors, Scott Schneider, has introduced or co-authored several bills, many of which are close to the heart of the tea-partying and creationists/home-schooling groups. For instance, he’s introduced bills on Right To Work, on controlling sexually explicit material, and so forth. He also works the Tea Party circuit for political support.

Sen. Schneider is also a well known anti-abortionist and a favorite of the Indiana Right to Life organization, and last year helped spearhead an effort to defund any organization in IN that performed abortions.

So we see that the stereotype is reinforced - tea party, creationism, anti-abortion - they are all part of the same stew that is today’s Republican party.

Why do they think this will work? They're just trying to create a social climate, or what?

I honestly think they just take what they can when they can.

Aka, "Why? Because we knew we had the votes!"

I have to assume they are pandering to creationists and this bill will never be enacted into law. I mean, they aren't even pretending to support the "theory" of "intelligent design"; they are just full-bore creationists with an explicitly religious agenda. They ought to title it the "ACLU Attorneys Full-Employment Act".

Even if it is struck down it is a victory for them. This gives them more fuel for their anti government fire, happily being stoked by the GOP.

It's like "abstinence-only," they push it because their ideology demands it, scientific facts be damned.

It gotten down to the fact that if you vote for a GOP/TP candidate anywhere you are throwing support behind people like these. I've seen quite enough. I've had enough. Voted GOP before. Not again.

Oh, wow:

RAMOS: You just released your tax returns. In 2010 you only paid 13 percent of taxes while most Americans paid much more than that. Is that fair?

ROMNEY: Well, actually, I released two years of taxes and I think the average is almost 15 percent. And then also, on top of that, I gave another more 15 percent to charity. When you add it together with all of the taxes and the charity, particularly in the last year, I think it reaches almost 40 percent that I gave back to the community. One of the reasons why we have a lower tax rate on capital gains is because capital gains are also being taxed at the corporate level. So as businesses earn profits, that’s taxed at 35 percent, then as they distribute those profits as dividends, that’s taxed at 15 percent more. So, all total, the tax rate is really closer to 45 or 50 percent.

RAMOS: But is it fair what you pay, 13 percent, while most pay much more than that?

ROMNEY: Well, again, I go back to the point that the, that the funds are being taxed twice at two different levels.

Romney glosses over the fact that he is not a corporation and doesn’t pay corporate taxes. Additionally, most corporations pay far lower than a 35 percent rate. In fact, many profitable corporations pay nothing at all.

Just ... wow.

"State Sen. Scott Schneider, R-Indianapolis, who voted for the measure, said if there are many theories about life’s origins, students should be taught all of them."

Ok Senator, how about including the Hindu theory about life's origins? Or Muslim theory of life's origins? Or the Buddhist theory of life's origins? Would you also be in favor of allowing Native American version of creationism in the science class too? Or the Wiccan version? Or the Scientologist version? Would you really be fair?

Indiana Pi Bill

The Indiana Pi Bill is the popular name for bill #246 of the 1897 sitting of the Indiana General Assembly, one of the most famous attempts to establish scientific truth by legislative fiat.

[Video]Just ... wow.

I'm a simple person, but I have a problem with considering that someone's tax (a business) who pays me is my tax. Based on that logic nobody should pay any tax because somebody previously will already have paid one, and somebody before that, and somebody before that.....

I suppose we can only conclude that the buck has to stop somewhere, so God pays all taxes, or the bottom turtle.

How could such a strong centralized state, so magnificent in its cultural and scientific achievements, collapse into an orgy of religious-fascist non-entities, condemned to the Dark Ages (Europe's own doing!) for 1,000 years before finally rescued out of the pit hole by foreign powers (read Arabia and China) who kept human civilization alive. It doesn't take a ton of effort to learn why science says that we evolved and the Earth is more then 6,000 years old. But there are too many elected officials that don't even make that effort. So I continue to wonder how much effort they put into figuring out when we should go to war, or abortion rights or tax code. If they can't even get this right.

I would even be happy if they said that Genesis was a metaphor, or that God help a long evolution or something other then were they are going with this crap. I have little to no faith in the future of our democracy, sometimes.

In what appears to have been an orgy of atavism on Wednesday, the Indiana State Senate committees also:

Ind. Senate panel backs limits on abortion pill

An Indiana Senate committee on Wednesday approved a proposal to tighten laws on how women can receive the so-called abortion pill even though doctors testified that the measure mandates prescription of a more dangerous higher dosage.

The Senate health committee voted 5-4 in support of the bill that requires that a doctor examine a woman in person before giving her RU-486, provide written information about the physical risks of abortion and to schedule a follow-up ultrasound for her two weeks later. Doctors who don't follow those steps could face a misdemeanor criminal charge if the proposal becomes law.

[...]

The abortion pill proposal follows the Republican-dominated Legislature's passage last year of law aimed at cutting off Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood because it provides abortions and imposed tighter abortion restrictions. A federal appeals court is considering whether to lift a federal judge's order that was issued in June that blocked the funding cutoff.

and

Indiana panel backs teaching cursive writing mandate

Indiana's public schools would be required to teach cursive writing and largely prohibited from starting their school years until late August under bill approved by a legislative committee.

The Senate Education Committee vote today to advance bills on both matters to the full Senate for consideration.

The debate over the teaching of cursive writing started after the state Department of Education in April dropped it as a required part of school curriculum in favor of keyboard proficiency. It is unclear whether any schools have stopped teaching cursive writing.

Looks like a straight up crackpottery, especially this old nugget:

The behavior of subatomic particles, indeed all particles and objects, is inextricably linked to the presence of an observer. Without the presence of a conscious observer, they at best exist in an undetermined state of probability waves.
Without consciousness, "matter" dwells in an undetermined state of probability. Any universe that could have preceded consciousness only existed in a probability state.

Particles don't depend on any consciousness.

The theory has deep roots and I don't believe it can simply be dismissed with raw assertion, see Wigner's friend and the quantum mind-body problem. It may not sound right, and there certainly are other equally strange but plausible explanations, like the many worlds concept.

re: #87 goddamnedfrank

For most people, that consciousness is involved in quantum mechanics is a simple misunderstanding of the language of physics. When (most) physicists write about observations and observers, they don't mean conscious observers. They mean acts of interaction of particles. There is no concept of consciousness in physics.

True, some physicists speculated on consciousness being involved, but that's just their private hypothetical stuff, not verifiable or scientific. Kinda like creationism. Basically, new agey woo. Which is what biocentrism seems to be all about.

I'm not against this bill. Here's why:

children indeed need to be taught all available scientific theories concerning the development of life (incl. creation science).

What are such available theories? Theory of evolution. That's it.

When creationists devise a scientific theory of creation, they should be able to teach it too. ;)

half-/

You seem to understand how science works, namely that a hypothesis is tested against observed facts: if facts support hypothesis, then it becomes a theory.

Evolution is a theory that is confirmed by observations from nearly every branch of science.

Creationism posits the existence of a Supreme Being, something which cannot be tested objectively.

But we cannot count on these goombahs in Indiana to even understand how science works and the difference between a science text and religious scriptures.

To them, it is about competing systems of belief.

Striking a Pose (Women and Fantasy Covers)
[Link: www.jimchines.com...]

A while back, we had a discussion on the blog about the cover art for my princess novels. For the most part, I really like these covers, but they’re not perfect.

Now I could talk about the way women are posed in cover art … or I could show you. I opted for the latter, in part because it helped me to understand it better. I expected posing like Danielle to feel a little weird and unnatural. I did not expect immediate, physical pain from trying (rather unsuccessfully) to do the hip thing she’s got going on.

I recruited my wife to take the pictures, which she kindly did with a minimum of laughter.

And you know what, I have always wondered what it was like to live through the downfall of the Roman Empire. Each time I probe this unsettling question, I keep coming back to conservative "State's Rights", "end the federal government", "bring back religion". Are we seeing the collapse of a great modern nation in real time?

Well, it didn't help that there were large "barbarian" populations on Rome's frontier, constantly putting pressure on them. All those wars were draining. Even China got taken over by the Mongols. Rome lasted quite a long time, considering.

I'm more interested in what would have happened if Europe, which was just emerging from the Middle Ages, had not been saved from a Mongol invasion by sheer dumb luck.

Lost in the coverage of the Navy SEAL rescue mission in Somalia is the fact that another American was kidnapped there four days ago and is being held for ransom.

Michael Scott Moore, an American writer who started his career tracking the surfing world and who was in Somalia to report about piracy, was kidnapped on Saturday.

"oil is fungible" is a different argument (one that I think works in favor of the keystone pipeline). The statement by Ralphie was:

if your country is going to consume five times its per-capita weight of the world's resources, and if those resources are located in politically and socially unstable parts of the world, then you can expect a disproportionate share of the world's problems to be laid at your doorstep.

If the concern is where the oil is coming from then isn't that an argument for only dealing with "politically and socially stable" parts of the world?

161 Obdicut  Thu, Jan 26, 2012 4:33:52am

Actually, in this case, oil isn't completely fungible. The oil coming out of the shale is of poor quality, and so causes a ton more pollution in order to refine-- and needs high quality shit to cut it with.

Nope. Doesn't change the fact that oil is still plentiful in the Middle East.

I'm not sure what you're not getting about this. What matters is the total consumption of oil. We can buy all our oil from Canada, but it won't matter; the size of the market is what matters. That's what determines everything: how much money the assholes in the ME make off of oil, how much political leverage the states in the Middle East have, etc.

It's an argument for not letting ourselves become dependent on resources that are located in politically and socially volatile parts of the world.

That's the way I took your comment. It's not an issue I'm concerned with but I can understand people wanting their products to come from places they would prefer to support.

which is why the fungible argument is an argument for building the keystone pipeline. Adding an additional 500 million barrels a day to the market drives down the price reducing the amount of money made off of it by nations we don't like.

I agree that it doesn't really matter where the oil comes from but some prefer to only deal with other nations/companies that they approve of, I can understand that.

It means we are highly dependent on resources controlled by military dictatorships, feudal monarchies or Islamist theocratic states. Not the best people to have to deal with at all, even worse when we allow them the potential ability to threaten our economic stability.

No, it isn't. Instead of just asserting that, try constructing an argument.

Adding an additional 500 million barrels a day to the market drives down the price reducing the amount of money made off of it by nations we don't like.

Heh. Um, do you really think that's how markets work? Really? When a product has a lower price the net profit is less?

You can make more money with a product at a lower price, often, than you can at a higher price.

I agree that it doesn't really matter where the oil comes from but some prefer to only deal with other nations/companies that they approve of, I can understand that.

If they really like bullshitting themselves and feeling good about a completely backwards position-- one that actually results in the opposite of what they want, sure.

Sen. Franken and conservatives join forces to fight detainee language
[Link: thehill.com...]

Strange bedfellows on Capitol Hill, ranging from Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) to Rep. Jeff Landry (R-La.), are joining forces to change controversial detainee language that was signed into law by President Obama last month.

The bipartisan effort is a clear indication that the debate on the government’s power to detain suspected terrorists, including U.S. citizens, will continue into 2012.

“Any statute that could possibly be interpreted to allow a president to detain American citizens without charge or trial is incredibly alarming,” said Landry, a freshman lawmaker and member of the Tea Party Caucus who has introduced a bill in the House to clarify the law.

The entire college athletics system is a joke, it works fine for the schools, generating millions in revenues, and for the professional leagues, serving as an unpaid "minor league", but it often does little to promote the interests of its players beyond giving them a free scholarship and then dumping them on the streets if they do not get picked up by a professional team.

I'm getting the impression that there's a synergy between "right to work"/union busting efforts and the anti-immigration efforts. If you roll back wages and benefits into a sort of dog-eat-dog world than it's easier to play up the old "immigrants are stealing your jobs!" card as well. Which then combine to build up the intra-class warfare between groups within the lower class. Which is all sauce for the factory owners and demogages since they have issues to yell about and an instant distraction to help keep their positions secure and profitable.

So... after the bugs I went google diving... was looking for how many fish are in the ocean. Came upon this tid-bit.

As many as 100 million sharks are killed each year for their meat and fins, which are used for shark fin soup. Hunters typically catch the sharks, de-fin them while alive and throw them back into the ocean where they either drown or bleed to death.

We deserve whatever mountains come crashing down upon us.

Quite so far. But the day is early. I also see by the link you posted that Idaho gets .21 cents more back from the Fed per $1.00 we send in.

Question though. Does this chart also include Farm Subsidies?

If humans determined that meat was tastier (by the tiniest degree) by hanging the animal from it's nostrils while beating it mercilessly with a switch for three days before the slaughter?

There would be a position called "Beef switcher" at every slaughterhouse in the world.

Whitey's on the Moon: One year to the day after the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the first extraterrestrial multi-use industrial park (housing a factory, a hotel, an advertising agency, a tourism bureau, and a privately-run prison), Newt Gingrich shocks the planet when he declares himself Potentate of the Eternal Lunar Empire and announces that he is to be henceforth addressed as "Lord Salamandrus the Preceptor."

It is revealed that all the space tourists who purportedly chose to make their home on the moon in fact were never allowed to leave. After undergoing a "re-education" process designed jointly by Fox News Channel, Proctor & Gamble, Anheuser-Busch, Blackwater, and Lee Greenwood, the now-passive captives were put to work making consumer goods so cheap that not even the dismal planetside sweatshops in North Korea could compete. The slogan of the Eternal Lunar Empire is "Frankly, Fundamentally, Profoundly." The salute is an index finger pointing at some unseen congregation. All days, months of the year, and units of measure are renamed "Ronald Reagan." Eventually, it dawns on the people of Earth to question why the moon could be the leading exporter of beef, despite apparently having no livestock.

Soon, Lord Salamandrus announces that he has shed his mortal shell and had his "infinte brain" cybernetically fused with the automated infrastructure systems of the moon, and he has constructed for himself an army of robot wives, each operated by remote control.

Earth is horrified. Plans are laid by the remaining governments of Earth to unite and put an end to this hellish dystopia. These plans come screeching to a halt, however, when everyone becomes permanently distracted by round-the-clock gossip column coverage of some dipshit celebutaunt couple filing for divorce before actually getting married.

If you have a lawyer handling the probate make sure you get a competent one. My mother's estate settlement dragged out over two years due to a lawyer sitting on the paperwork and doing nothing.

But since it's Newt, and he's pandering to the space coast that has seen jobs lost due to the end of the shuttle program, they're calling this "a dream big" move, and a signature piece.

That is for funeral costs and all dad's final bills. Then...and I never knew this shit..The Estate can write me out a check for 100,000 dollars completely tax free.. Who freaking knew that?

Lots of "win" here for what on the surface sounds like a playground squabble between some 10-year-olds.

Iran
- defines an outward "enemy" to claim is trying to destroy the Islamic Republic
- an excuse to ratchet up things in the Straits of Hormuz if they want to
- an excuse to push their nuclear program towards military use for "defensive purposes"

Russia (or any other alternate oil source for Europe)
- higher prices and more money into their economy

Europe
- some push for unity in the face of Iran embargoing first.*
- hopefully some push to develop less oil dependency

* - Embargoing a buyer in order to push towards diplomacy in your favor can backfire. See CSA cotton embargo in 1861.

GOP Congressman says Birth Control isn't Health Care

Despite the fact that the new rule maintains a religious exemption for religious institutions and non-profits, Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE) introduced the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act to ensure that all providers can back out of contraception coverage if they claim religious objection. Promoting his bill on the Janet Mefferd Show yesterday, Fortenberry decried Obama’s decision as “a bailout for Planned Parenthood” that is “politically and ideologically driven” because, somehow, birth control “is unrelated to the basic needs of health care”:

FORTENBERRY: Fundamentally, I believe this is a bailout for Planned Parenthood because what it does is provide a number of electives that are now free and it is ideologically and politically driven because it is unrelated to the basic needs of health care, most of which is driven by the onset of chronic illness — that’s about 74 to 75 percent of where the costs come from. So if we were serious about trying to get underneath the underlying factors that are driving up health care costs and really worry about prevention, we’d focus on health and wellness and chronic disease prevention. That just leads me to conclude that this was politically and ideologically driven...It’s a bailout for Planned Parenthood, it’s a direct subsidy to the abortion industry, who is entangled with these services, that’s their political agenda.

No word on his position on boner pills and how they relate to health care.

What a little disingenuous liar she is.

Not entirely, she was right in picking Christie as the only candidate the GOP could win with. But he was wise to keep his name and reputation of of this clown show...

GOP Congressman says Birth Control isn't Health Care

No word on his position on boner pills and how they relate to health care.

Well, duh. Boner pills are obviously basic health care. If men can't get it up, there's no more babies!

Women on the other hand? Fuck 'em. The only health care they need is to keep their legs closed unless their boner pill popping husbands want to get laid.

'Stop-Newt' Republicans Confront Base Unwilling to Take Orders

Jan. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Two days after Newt Gingrich defeated Mitt Romney in the South Carolina presidential primary one of Romney's big-name backers offered a grim prediction for his fellow Republicans.

"The possibility of Newt Gingrich being our nominee against Barack Obama I think is essentially handing the election over to Obama," former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty told reporters on a Jan. 23 conference call. "I think that's shared by a lot of folks in the Republican Party."

Pawlenty's comments echoed those being uttered publicly and behind the scenes by elected Republicans, party activists, fundraisers and pundits, who represent a portion of the party establishment -- a "stop-Newt" caucus -- populated largely by people who have known the former U.S. House speaker for decades.

I don't think I've ever been such a fan of Newt! Go Newt!

Ann Coulter's even in on the act now. And she fucking HATES Mitt Romney. Today, they're all over the internets saying Newt repeatedly "dissed" Ronald Reagan (a cardinal sin).

The whole Tea Party movement was about people opposed to taking orders (or even constructive suggestions) from anyone. It was about shouting down the opposition and running it out of office and out of town.

newt has found a resonance with those people, and they buoyed him to victory in South Carolina. The hounds of hell have been loosed, and there is to recalling them at this point...

On the topic of the post at the top: from my 15 year old niece's Wall:

The best thing I've learned this semester so far: When a teacher explaining prehistory and human origins seems to horribly misunderstand evolution, don't flip a table and start yelling, as tempting as it may be. Instead, write your position paper explaining why he's wrong.

Those folks in Indiana don't understand the violent reaction they could engender.

"There really is no Republican establishment left that can control anything," said Matthew Dowd, a onetime aide to President George W. Bush and now a Bloomberg Television contributor. "Some try to act like they are in charge, but the fraternity is now running the campus."

Change I can believe in.

Five Missouri Democrats Discover Crosshairs Outside Their Capitol Offices

Five Democratic State Senators in Missouri discovered large, orange crosshair stickers over their office nameplates on Tuesday in the Capitol Building in Jefferson. The targets included all four Democratic women in the state senate, as well as the Democratic minority leader. One Republican state representative also found a similar sticker outside his office.

Capitol police are still investigating the matter, and some of the senators took to the senate floor to express their concerns:

“Many of us when we came back to our office this afternoon had gun targets on our nameplates. A few of the senators removed them, only to have them replaced by larger stickers later,” said Jolie Justus, a Democrat from Kansas City.

I'm sure they were just surveying markers.

re: #30 Robert O.

And you know what, I have always wondered what it was like to live through the downfall of the Roman Empire. Each time I probe this unsettling question, I keep coming back to conservative "State's Rights", "end the federal government", "bring back religion". Are we seeing the collapse of a great modern nation in real time?

I think we are seeing that which will be unfortunate for the US and for the rest of the world because of America's current pivotal role in the world's economy. The transition will probably be painful.

America had science and a hard working, skilled workforce, and manufacturing industry, and resources, and a large and affluent population.

What does it have now?
