Quinnipiac Poll: Romney Romps to 14-Point Lead

The Gingrich balloon continues deflating
Politics • Views: 26,487

The latest poll from Quinnipiac University is even more bad news for Newt Gingrich: he’s behind Mitt Romney in Florida now by 14 points.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has a 43 - 29 percent lead over former House Speaker Newt Gingrich among Republican likely voters in Florida, the nation’s first big-state presidential primary, according to Quinnipiac University poll released today. Only 7 percent are undecided, but 24 percent say they might change their mind by tomorrow’s election.

In today’s survey, self-described conservatives go to Romney 40 - 31 percent. He gets 38 percent of white evangelical Christians to Gingrich’s 33 percent and wins 40 percent of Tea Party members to Gingrich’s 35 percent.

Texas U.S. Rep. Ron Paul and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum each have 11 percent of likely primary voters today. …

“Gov. Mitt Romney is headed towards a double-digit victory that touches all the GOP bases,” said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. “Romney carries every part of the GOP coalition, including the parts central to Gingrich - self- described conservatives, white evangelical Christians and Tea Party supporters. If this margin holds up tomorrow, it’s hard to see where Gingrich goes from here.”

Newt will keep going though. He is too much of a megalomaniac not to. Not to mention the fact that there's still a ton of primaries to go.

Just to put things in perspective: Romney has only won one single, small state so far, Florida would be his first major state.

Newt still has a large war chest and the determination to spend every penny of it pursuing his second-term goal of a 51st state on the Moon.

Especially because the polls won't close until the end of a Lunar day, which is 29 Eath days long...it will really skewer the primaries.

A stupid electorate is highly prone to confirmation bias so they'll not see the hucksterism but will instead focus solely on the bias agreement.

I don't think he plays all that well vs Romney for that group. Against Obama he would get some of them. But to a North East Jew in Florida, Mitt is like an English muffin instead of a bagel. Newt on the other hand is closer to wonder bread. And everyone knows that Jews just don't go there.

Florida is possibly the worst place for Newt. I think a lot depends on how the media spins the narrative of a loss for him there.

Yeah, losing is almost definitely not going to help him. I'm not sure what impact the large gap in debates is going to have. Newt would probably like to get back at Romney for the last one, but Romney's learned a few lessons. Question is if the last debate outcome was more indicative of issues specific to Florida.

The next three caucuses are probably going to Romney - Maine, Colorado and Minnesota, and the Missouri primary is pointless and awards no delegates. The Arizona debate will be interesting to watch because it's more conservative than Florida but Gingrich's nuanced stance on expelling immigrants may not play well with Republicans there, as it didn't in Florida. If Romney can hammer Newt on that he may do some damage. Washington State will go to Romney in a landslide.

So, if Gingrich can't nail a win in at the debate in Georgia he'll be in some trouble heading in to Super Tuesday, where he might otherwise hold an advantage in the majority of states. At this point he's also going to run into money problems again. It's not clear how long Sheldon Adelson is going to keep funding the PAC, and unless Newt can show some statistical promise of upsetting Romney or pull in some other supporters with deep pockets he's going to run out of gas. As it is now he doesn't have the resources to cut many of his own ads, and can't afford to transport the press around like Romney can. Reporters will only follow him around on their own dime as long as their publishers believe there's a compelling story to justify the expense.

Allen West To Liberals, President Obama: ‘Get The Hell Out Of The United States of America’

This is a battlefield that we must stand upon and we need to let president Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and my dear friend, the chairman of the Democrat National Committee [Debbie Wasserman-Schultz], we need to let them know that Florida is not on the table. Take your message of equality of achievement, take your message of economic dependency, and take your message of enslaving the entrepreneurial will and spirit of the American people somewhere else. You can take it to Europe, you can take it to the bottom of the sea, you can take it to the North Pole, but get the hell out of the United States of America.

I think that's slightly wrong:

gdipp Project supports both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7/Vista. You can install 32-bit and 64-bit components separately. The 32-bit components only renders 32-bit applications, while the 64-bit components only renders 64-bit applications in 64-bit Windows. Both components share the same setting file.

[Link: code.google.com...]

So my take is that users of a 32bit windows would need only the 32bit flavor, but for 64bit windows, one would need both.

re: #65 Charles

Here's an interesting program for Windows that enables much better font-smoothing:

[Link: code.google.com...]

I installed it in Windows 7 and it makes a big difference. No jagged pixels in the title font with it - nice and pretty. Not sure how it works with Win XP, but the doc says it does.

It's a browser issue. The font looks beautiful in Safari 5 & IE9, has a few jaggies in Chrome (but not too bad), and is a nightmare of jaggies in FF9.

re: #77 wrenchwench

I didn't even have to reload the page! Even the comments look better.

Dammit, now you're going to make me try it to see if it'll improve how it look in Firefox.

btw: I'm using Chrome and it looks fine here.

The PC version of Safari actually uses its own text rendering routine, which duplicates the Mac OS font-smoothing style.

The gdipp program installs a Mac OS-style smoothing algorithm system-wide.

I know this is terrible, but I still laughed:

I do wonder how Newt plays in Boca. I think his white-on-top attitude is probably a big turnoff for Jews in the GOP, but I have no data to back that up.

The nice thing about gdipp is that you can easily turn it on or off, in the Services window.

re: #78 abolitionist

I think that's slightly wrong:

[Link: code.google.com...]

So my take is that users of a 32bit windows would need only the 32bit flavor, but for 64bit windows, one would need both.

Yeah, it looks like you're right.

Can we expect the Romney and Gingrich campaigns to bill the Obama campaign for ad design in July?

Another recent LGF change most people won't notice

Yeah, it looks like you're right.

Makes sense...I run Firefox (32 bit) on Win7 (64 bit)...I won't bother with the font smoothing though as I like the rough look.

Anyone know what Santorum's been up to lately?

I saw a blurp this morning about Santorum going back on the campaign trail due to his daughter's "nearly miraculous" recovery. Due to that term I decided not to follow the article since I had recently eaten.

94 Charles Johnson  Mon, Jan 30, 2012 2:37:06pm

I'm now using CSS3 gradients instead of background images for the buttons, the top banner, and several other elements. Got rid of a bunch of images that way - browsers that can't handle the gradient fill CSS code will just show a flat background color.

If he's trying to use her as an emotional prop for generating votes that's pretty sick. If she's truly ill (and I do believe she has a terminal illness), then he should focus on her and save his energy for 2016.

If you didn't know better, you'd swear the government had deployed tanks and armed personnel to keep people from entering churches if you listened to Gingrich.

And the Stupids lap it up. As if anyone is preventing them from worshiping.

Wow, I'm not used to my text editors looking like this in Windows.

Anyway, the font looks great in Chrome now, but it's still got jaggies in FF (not as bad as before though).

No firm opinion since I haven't looked into it. My preliminary opinion is that if he has a 3-year-old daughter with an illness that is probably going to be terminal in the next few years he shouldn't be running for POTUS in the first place at this stage whatever her current condition is.

Given that the child has made it past three with Trisomy 18, I guess she deserves the 'miraculous' title.

I hope this is the right choice for him and the family.
