Komen Apologizes, Reinstates Planned Parenthood Funding

Anti-choice fanatics lose when people speak up
Politics • Views: 25,550

Apparently, the people in charge of merchandising at the Susan G. Komen Foundation had a little talk with their anti-abortion executives, and today the Komen Foundation is reinstating their Planned Parenthood funding, and apologizing to Planned Parenthood and the American public.

Planned Parenthood has released the following statement in response:

“The outpouring of support for women in need of lifesaving breast cancer screening this week has been astonishing and is a testament to our nation’s compassion and sincerity.

“During the last week, millions spontaneously joined a national conversation about lifesaving breast cancer prevention care and reinforced shared values about access to health care for all.  This compassionate outcry in support of those most in need rose above political, ideological, and cultural divides, and will surely be recognized as one of our nation’s better moments during a contentious political time.  Planned Parenthood thanks each and every person who has contributed to elevating the importance of breast cancer prevention for so many women in need.

“In recent weeks, the treasured relationship between the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation and Planned Parenthood has been challenged, and we are now heartened that we can continue to work in partnership toward our shared commitment to breast health for the most underserved women.  We are enormously grateful that the Komen Foundation has clarified its grantmaking criteria, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Komen partners, leaders and volunteers.  What these past few days have demonstrated is the deep resolve all Americans share in the fight against cancer, and we honor those who are at the helm of this battle.

“Planned Parenthood has been a trusted partner with the Komen Foundation in early cancer detection and prevention services.  In particular, Planned Parenthood helps the Komen Foundation reach vulnerable populations — low-income women, African-American women, and Latinas — especially in rural areas and underserved communities where Planned Parenthood health centers are their only source of health care.  With Komen Foundation grants, over the past five years, Planned Parenthood health centers provided nearly 170,000 clinical breast exams and more than 6,400 mammogram referrals.  With the outpouring of support over the past week, even more women in need will receive lifesaving breast cancer care.”

But the Komen Foundation has done enormous damage to their reputation, and it’s going to be difficult for them to gain back the trust they’ve lost — especially since they still have not acknowledged that anti-Planned Parenthood politics played a large part in their decision to cut off funding in the first place.

As you might expect, this news has driven right wing bloggers into a state of apoplectic rage. A look at the crazed wingnut reactions:

Komen Caves to Feminazis | Jammie Wearing Fools
Nets Rush to Defend Planned Parenthood, Ignore Catholic Dispute With Obama | NewsBusters.org
KOMEN FOUNDATION COLLAPSES: Will Fund Abortion Group Planned Parenthood | the Gateway Pundit

The Komen Foundation continues to deny that anti-abortion politics was responsible for their original decision to defund Planned Parenthood, but the right wing blogs and media seem to have no doubt that it was.

Feminazi is nothing but rank projection.

2 makeitstop  Fri, Feb 3, 2012 10:27:17am

At this point, I'm not sure which move was more craven - the initial move to defund, or the decision to reverse.

I heard on the news last night that a lot of their corporate sponsors were very upset at the PR nightmare that this turned into. Sadly, that probably had more to do with their decision to reverse course.

Here's hoping their wingnut director resigns in protest.

I'm still not buying it. The Komen statement reads too much like lawyer-speak and CYA. It's a way to try and publicly say that they were kidding, that it's all good, then once the attention dies down, they'll quietly cut funding anyway.

Oh well. No matter. I'm done with Komen for good. I'm going to save my money for charities that actually fund research and not more excuses to sell pink products.

Rush was saying that in the Early Years. It's a pathetic slur reeking of projection.

This blew back in their face and now we have to withstand the gamma ray explosion of projection and rage.

They will have to really scrub that Pink Ribbon to get this stain out. Might never come out. If there was no outpouring of support for PP, do you think for a moment they would reverse themelves?

Considering the fact that people were writing and calling various corporate sponsors for Komen swearing to boycott them -- and posting on those official company Facebook pages about it, too -- I'm not surprised.

I don't think that brands like Yoplait and Energizer ever expected to be pulled into this Komen clusterfuck, so they probably told them to fix it or they were getting rid of their pink products.

I would love to see them raise money for Planned Parenthood directly that for about 100 years now has been taking care of women as the only game in town for many. If these companies REALLY want to support women's health, that's what they'll do.

It would be great, but yeah, it's just going to happen so long as the social conservatives foam at the very mention of PP. I suspect the Koman brand is permanently scarred. The women who were active in the walks and raising money are the same ones who will not forget this slap. Companies like Yoplait who felt the rage in the past couple of days are going to hesitate to step into this pit after their immediate commitment is fulfilled, methinks.

Watching the Komen FB page these past few days has been an object lesson in anti-choice thinking. For days. they lauded Komen for "not being political" in defunding PP, and for protecting life and swearing to donate money. Now, they're hating on Komen, saying they caved to the radical left and calling them complicit in the deaths of babies and swearing they'll never give money to them.

It's hilarious and very telling.

Pretty much. That's why if you look at a lot of liberal sites, they're not buying this "reversal" much. They look at the statement from Komen as a way to try and fix the PR disaster and as soon as people get complicit again, they'll cut funding to Planned Parenthood anyway. They've been trying to play games all along. Yesterday they said they weren't really defunding PP because 3 PP clinics would still get money.

And I heard a Komen spox last night serve up an entirely different excuse for defunding. Instead of the 'under investigation' excuse, this woman said that they were doing away with 'pass-through grants.'

Planned Parenthood did not Teach Girl Scouts how to Lead Happy Sex Lives while Living with HIV

Amid the news that the Susan G. Komen Foundation may (or may not) be reversing its decision to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood, it is worth taking a moment to realize just how ridiculous yet effective the right-wing campaign against Planned Parenthood has been.

For instance, back in 2010, the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute alleged that during a United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, the Girl Scouts "hosted a no-adults-welcome panel at the United Nations ... where Planned Parenthood was allowed to distribute a brochure entitled 'Healthy, Happy and Hot' [which] contains explicit and graphic details on sex, as well as the promotion of casual sex in many forms."

The only problem was that it wasn't true. As the Girl Scouts explained, all the organizations at the conference had been using the same rooms and so if there were any Planned Parenhood brochures present in the room when they held their meeting, it was only because they had been left behind after previous sessions.

As we pointed out back in 2010, the enitre allegation doesn't even make sense as the purpose of the brochure in question is aimed at teaching people about how to lead sexually fulfilling lives while living with HIV? Are we really supposed to believe that the Girl Scouts kicked everyone out of the room so that Planned Parenthood could present this information to a bunch of young girls?

But the fact that the entire thing is fundamentally absurd, all of the Religious Right's anti-Planned Parenthood crusders ate it up and have repeated it ad nauseum until it has gotten to the point where it is now so accepted as fact that Girl Scout leaders have to spend time repeatedly swatting down the rumor while losing sales:

Someone may have already pointed out that they really haven't caved. All they've said is that Planned Parenthood can still apply for grants (that's the only reversal from yesterday). I still will never trust them again and hope now that they've pissed off the right wing as well as the left that people will look to the many charities that are so much more worthy.

This is simply damage control and it's no surprise to me that the PR person who screwed this up so royally is a friend of sarah palin - they're both grifters.

Damn right. They aren't lying when they say they don't want one. They'd much rather we rolled over and gave in.

Well, yeah. Liberals and women aren't supposed to fight back. They're supposed to just lie there and take it. =P

He has no real traffic anymore, no one links to him

Then she goes on with a historical review, and up-to-date remarks about LGF.

How many people actually link to FreeRepublic any more? Other than people who are just pointing and laughing?

re: #56 Olsonist

That's what the Komen national leadership would like to do but it's pretty clear that the regional people and rank and file don't want this. So, they may think of this as a cleverly worded strategic retreat but I think there's going to be a battle royale internally.

Good. Let there be an internal battle over this. The national leadership clearly has interests that run counter to the supposed mission of SGK.

Dreher has been an insufferable douche for years. I used to read his column over on Beliefnet when he blogged there and he was just as annoying then, trying to call himself a "crunchy granola conservative" or some shit.

Reading him now, looks like nothing's changed. He's still an insufferable douche.

His definition of freedom of religion works out to this: "my freely chosen belief in an unknowable and invisible supernatural being gives me extralegal powers to disregard civil laws of my choosing as well as requiring other people to acknowledge and abide by my whims if they work for me or in my vicinity"

Needless to say, he sees attacks on his freedom to force other people to live by his religious code all the time.

You Should Find the Anti-Komen Backlash Disgusting, Even if You're Pro-Choice...

Thanks for the concern, troll.

For some reason, it's really important to these people to tell each other how insignificant and irrelevant I am -- over and over and over.

It's not surprising that they never see links to LGF any more, though -- they live in the right wing bubble, read nothing but right wing sites, and watch only Fox News.

Man, the right wing is really losing it over this. Jennifer Rubin: Susan G. Komen Foundation vs. Planned Parenthood bullies.

Now they're attacking Planned Parenthood for speaking out against the right's efforts to destroy them.

Boo hoo, they won't let us kick them around!!

We're being BULLIED! Doesn't anybody care about POOR US!?!?!@1

In recent weeks, the treasured relationship between the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation and Planned Parenthood has been challenged....

Love that passive voice!

This relentless effort of the theocratic lunatics in this country to turn Planned Parenthood into the root of all evil, irritates me beyond words. Less than 5% of what Planned Parenthood does is provide abortion services. They do all types of cancer screenings, birth control education and distribution, STD education and testing, and mammogram funding and referrals, to name a few. For millions of women in the urban and rural ghettos in this country, this may be the only medical attention they ever receive.

My job requires me to work in many of the more impoverished parts of Chicago (south and west sides of the city) where medical providers are few and far between. There always are Planned Parenthood clinics though, serving a very needy and yet under-served population.

Of course, these sanctimonious asshats would never set foot into any of these areas, so I doubt that they have any idea the impact of defunding and/or closing PP would have on these communities. Not that they would care anyway....
