I dunno. The M&M's one might be a pretty close runner. Nevertheless, I'm glad this commercial was in the lineup. Chrysler did a good job with it, and it was worth it.

Mitt Romney driving uphill in Michigan
...Further underlining the good news, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne announced that, as a reward for the company’s first profitable year since 2005, all hourly workers would be receiving a $1,500 bonus. Meanwhile, GM announced plans to invest $200 million in a new stamping plant in Arlington, Texas. Oh, and Michigan’s unemployment rate declined again in December, to its lowest point in more than two years.
Chrysler’s numbers are particularly noteworthy, because without the Obama administration’s combination bailout/managed bankruptcy, Chrysler almost assuredly would not exist.

A full-on, no-shit revolution, followed by full-on, no-shit civil war, followed by a full-on, no-shit depression that saw people starving to death, followed by a full-on, no-shit global war (ripples of which I contend are still being felt to this day). Deranged mobs lynching "n*****s" considered 'just the way it goes down South', race riots, cities in flames. Assassination of the president, at the height of a so-called "cold war" where crazy and paranoid people were pointing nuclear weapons at each other for no discernible rational reason. The Middle-East. Disco. Taco Bell. Boy bands.
BUT NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN, we have a black president and people are not as rich as they could be if circumstances were such that facilitated them being richer, and THAT of course means that it's half-time for human civilization.

Alot might be just bitterness and getting stuck in ways.
Earlier in life, I got convinced there was a culture war between Liberals and Conservatives. I also believe my side must win.
Various events since then compounded this view, with the Norway Terror Attack being particularly destabilizing. I remember for 2-3 months after the attack, I was venting at various Republicans on campus, calling them Terrorists and the like for it.
Of course, this attitude does have advantages. I am just as nasty against Salafists. In fact, after the first Boko Haram attack, I FB messaged the MSA President an article on it, with my attached statement being "I'm guessing you are happy about this." He said he was offended by that attack, and said he rejected my statement. I can see through him though. And I'm going to be bringing the Imam into this now, after his little spiel on FB.

re: #91 Dark_Falcon
How can a man such as that be a friend at all? I mean no disrespect, but I find the question needing to be asked.
Two reasons:
1. Recognizing what he is, he committed himself to a (quite toney) 'sanitarium' after he realized that if he stayed in the general population he'd wind up murdering people-- not out of rage, but because they were in his way or had annoyed him. So, he was able to intellectually empathize, to intellectually come to the conclusion that he didn't have the right to murder others, but also realize that his mental state wouldn't stop him from doing so if he perceived them as enough of a barrier.
2. He's very helpful. He's a materials and systems engineer and if I email him a question, I get a very exhaustive reply, and he likes the questions I bring to him. So that's most of our friendship-- a 'working' friendship, so to speak. He was in my physics lab at college, that's how we met.
I may actually go back to school, if I'm able to gin up enough income, to go into engineering-- even though I'll be very, very old-- so that I can work with him.
Short version: He doesn't mean any harm, and has more self-awareness than the average bear.

Looking back, I'm not sure. I'm going to venture a guess and say that it was because of all the little (and big) things that connected me to Norway and the attack. Then the Manifesto gave me a vent for my anger about what happened.
Back then, the Muslim Liberals I knew said I had become much crueler at the time. While I regret it now, at the time, I was blinded by a horrific amount of anger.
I imagine this is what people felt after 9/11. I wouldn't now: The 9/11 happened in Middle School, my main teacher wouldn't allow us to see the TV. I don't know why. My class was the only one in the school to not see it. I wouldn't see the footage from that day unmodified until 9/11/2010, on MSNBC.

It's probably a better bet than Greek bonds:
Greece takes step closer to default
Lucas Papademos, the Greek premier, failed to make party leaders accept harsh terms in return for a second €130bn bail-out, pushing Athens closer to a disorderly default as early as next month.
Greek television reported that Mr Papademos has set a deadline of midday on Monday for the three leaders to let him know whether they agree in principle with the proposed austerity measures, before he meets them again later in the day.
After five hours of discussions, the three leaders of Greece's national unity government had not accepted demands by international lenders for immediate deep spending cuts and labour market reforms as part of a new medium-term package.

Maybe consider spending some time with another therapist, one who is less focused on approaching your issues from a specialized disability or religious standpoint. One of the things I've noticed is that you tend to pigeonhole yourself unnecessarily at times, and maybe don't realize that some of the problems you deal with are ubiquitous to young men in general.

A follow up to a story I linked a couple of days ago:
Our View: Kiel School Board took high road
The Kiel School Board chose the reasonable course last week in declining to change its method of teaching about the origins of human life.
District resident Patty Kubetz wants the school district to include in freshman science classes a statement she crafted, explaining that evolution is but one theory of how we came to be.
The relative merits of evolution, creationism, intelligent design and other theories [gahhh] about life's origins have been topics of heated debate for centuries. All have their adherents and all have their detractors.
It is encouraging that the Kiel School Board accepted Kubetz's request for discussion of the topic. It could have skirted a difficult topic by issuing her a "thanks, but no thanks" letter, or cited the fact that she's married to School Board member Randy Kubetz as a potential conflict of interest.
The board instead took the high road, listened to an hour of spirited discussion and decided to keep things just as they are.
That may not sit well with people — and there are many — who'd like to see public schools weaned off the diet that feeds only evolution. They would settle for students being offered even a sampling of other offerings. Patty Kubetz calls it a matter of "balance."
Those who believe in creationism or intelligent design should not view the board's decision as a defeat, however. Closer analysis of the discussion that preceded it shows that at least one Kiel science teacher leaves the door open to students to talk about alternatives to evolution.
A former student agreed, saying there was ample opportunity given to discuss evolution and its alternative theories.
Kubetz insists she did not seek to change the Kiel curriculum by replacing evolution with creationism. She wouldn't mind if that happened, but only wanted a short statement read to freshmen students about potential alternatives to evolution.
Kubetz has probably achieved her aim by raising the issue in a professional manner that produced a public airing. High school students are curious about many things, particularly what some would consider esoteric topics like where we came from.
Students in Kiel have heard about the "flap" before the School Board and likely now are engaged in discussing the topic, exactly the awareness Kubetz hoped to create.
For its part, the School Board did the right thing. Overturning this apple cart could bring costly legal challenges from groups like the Freedom From Religion Foundation, which no school district needs in a time of tight budgets.
We applaud all involved in this situation for raising awareness of the issue while keeping in mind the best interests of those living within the school district.
So, the school board made the right decision because otherwise the district would find itself in a costly legal battle, eh?
Again I say... gahhh.

On one hand, she has a personality that helps smooth off my rough edges, and is very helpful to me socially and is very sweet. Also, she doesn't mind me being cutesy.
On the other hand, she has also been a close friend of mine for about 6-7 years, and I don't want to lose such a dear friend.

Cynicism aside, I am really quite serious, since it seems that there are so many people who simply haven't a clue about the meaning of the word (and probably other words too).
But really, had they been given some decent instruction in school, at the very least they would be inventing other arguments than "it's only a theory".

You still haven't seen it unmodified.
It took 5-10 minutes for the network editors to realize they were showing live people jumping out of buildings and falling dozens of floors before leaving the frame, in some cases the camera panned down to follow the fall, and some of the microphones were sensitive enough to catch the sounds they made when they hit.
Adjustments were made, and that footage has never been rebroadcast.

Dating isn't necessarily forbidden, per se. What's forbidden is being alone with a woman (like in a room, just the two of you, with the door shut) or having sexual contact with her.
That said, there's what's practical and what's practicable for American Muslims. We don't usually have the extended family or community ties that exist in other places where Islam is practiced.
I don't see why you shouldn't be able to go out in public with her, either just the two of you or in a group. Nothing wrong or un-Islamic about that, IMO, as long as you behave yourselves.
But—and this is a big BUT—if you're going to do that it should be with the purpose of getting to know her as a potential wife, not just to date for the sake of dating. Neither one of you should see anyone else while you're seeing each other as hearts are involved and feelings could get hurt on both sides—i.e. it's something you need to approach with seriousness & respect (for her and yourself).
If you're not emotionally or financially ready for that level of seriousness, then you need to step back until you are.
Also, I killed the thread. Do I get a medal?

I assure you that you are allowed to date. If this is another self-imposed rule then either ditch it or come to terms with it and stop prying. On some level you're clearly aware that you're sending mixed signals to your own brain and being awkward as hell about things with this woman, which is why this is become a massive stressor for you. Know your boundaries, if you don't have an actionable interest in pursuing a relationship with this woman then her relationship status is of no genuine concern to you.

I'm not sure it matters, but since so many of your rules are self imposed then knowing what her rules structure looks like might be instructive. Anyway, since she's in another state there' nothing in your rules that precludes honestly communicating your interest. It's fear that's keeping you from doing that, and fear is the mind-killer. Oh, this could be an interesting election.
I'm personally curious if Norway will decide to get involved. The Republican Party was promoting the Ultra-Right Wing Progress party in that country. Then the attack happened, and now Norway covers the Republicans in the US in a nasty way (EX: They said Santorum winning Iowa was showing all the Republicans cared about was promoting hate in a fair number of the papers.)
I would be curious if the Norwegian Public will return the favor. If Norway does, this could be the nastiest election since Adams v. Jefferson (1800). Because Norway has and can play real dirty.
By Norway, I mean various organizations significant in the Country, such as Labor, and significant citizens in that country.

Also, Romney actively trash talks the bailout today in a kind of deliberately obtuse denial. What he and the wingers refuse to recognize is the difference between Chapters 11 and 7. Romney's rhetoric is that GM and Chrysler could have come back leaner if they were allowed to fail. The fact is that there were no investors other than the US government willing to step in, and therefore they were facing Chapter 7, total liquidation and all assets sold at auction. The companies would have been utterly destroyed, the equipment sold off piecemeal to the highest bidder, and the ripple effects on the economy from the parts manufacturers and dealerships falling like dominos would have sent us into another great depression.
The entire Republican argument is founded on a deliberate ignorance as to the actual situation that was faced.

And here's how the auto industry feels about the 99%:
It was the first time the Auburn Hills automaker has reported a full-year profit since 1997, and it exceeded the targets set by CEO Sergio Marchionne when Fiat SpA took over the company in 2009.
In fact, Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said all of Fiat's net income came from Chrysler in 2011.
"We're pleased with the results. It's been an exceptional year for Chrysler," Marchionne told analysts and reporters during a conference call Wednesday morning. "We've delivered on everything we told you."
Marchionne said Chrysler salaried and hourly workers will receive bonuses, but would not say how much they will be.
According to the formula agreed on by the company and the United Auto Workers last fall, each of Chrysler's 26,000 hourly employees should receive a check for more than $1,500.

They only ban contributions. Volunteering is considered okay. This could be a really dirty election in terms of Rhetoric if Norway decides to throw in.
Generally, an individual may volunteer personal services to a federal candidate or federal political committee without making a contribution. The Act provides this volunteer "exemption" as long as the individual performing the service is not compensated by anyone. 11 CFR 100.74. The Commission has addressed applicability of this exemption to volunteer activity by a foreign national, as explained below.
In AO 1987-25, the Commission allowed a foreign national student to provide uncompensated volunteer services to a Presidential campaign. By contrast, the decision in AO 1981-51 prohibited a foreign national artist from donating his services in connection with fundraising for a Senate campaign.

At Stockholm airport, they have 100's of pre-made sandwiches for sale, all of which come with either roast beef or turkey, and lettuce and mayo. No other options. At this point, I advocate the Israelis doing a big solution, with West Bank becoming Palestinian territory. It would have no military of it's own, but would be under Jordanian Protection. In addition, more freedom of land ownership in both would be available. The settlers could stay if they acceded to being a minority. They would get Police protection/Israeli Military for a decade or two, as things cooled down.
However, an independent Palestine does not matter to me. They are a piece I would like Jordan to control, as I eventually want a Jordan strong enough to directly confront Saudi. The Palestinians can be sacrificed to get rid of that menace (one thing the lady I mentioned earlier has criticized me for is being very Machiavellian.)
Jerusalem would become an independent city state, with both ceding land. It would act like a fusion of Andorra and Singapore. Most things would be handled by city legislature, but the Heads of State would be the President of Israel, the Hashemite King of Jordan, and the Archbishop of Canterbury. They would handle Religious Affairs and Maintenance of Buildings. The Anglican Church is not involved in the Retarded Inter-Christian Fighting about Churches, so he gets to take care of that.
In a Final Treaty, the Archbishop of Canterbury would also get the Authority to do this with all churches in what is Israel AND Palestine. He will be in charge of Maintenance and keeping order.
Also, if Assad falls, we will likely have to send Troops, along with other nations, to prevent a massively bloody and vicious civil war from breaking out, and to protect the minorities.

There's no willpower for any of that. Israel is too pissed and too divided to make that kind of big decision. It would need fresh elections, too, and those would have to be elections where the Ultra-Orthodox parties weren't able to play kingmaker. Nor am I enamored with giving power to the sorts of losers often seen as Archbishop of Canterbury.
As for the US sending troops to anywhere, its not likely this year. If Obama does that, the left would scream "Betrayal!" and many activists would proceed to stay home on Election Day. Too many on the American left are still hostile to any sort of American military intervention. Obama won't risk it. It's the kind of thing where even if the GOP didn't attack him at all for going into Syria, the Democrats would still suffer a serious internal backlash.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Church of the Nativity are at High Risk of Catastrophic Structural Damage because nobody can agree to do anything. Well, find a way to change that. At this point, peace is more important than than whatever the hell they are thinking. And, as things grow more peaceful over time, you could withdraw people.

I'm not disagreeing with what our military can do, but capability isn't the issue. The current president made getting out of Iraq a big deal. For him to turn around and go into Syria would be very badly received, mostly (but by no means entirely) on the left. For Obama to be bold and decisive in an election year like this would be to risk losing the election. Moreover, if we're going to send the Army in, then any funding cuts will have to be put off, which will require cuts in domestic programs to make up the difference. That won't be very popular.
Look at this situation from a less bold, 'small ball' position and then tell me how you'd act. And remember, your first objective is winning the election

I don't like cynical either, but if you're going to be Machiavellian you'd better get used to it.
Moreover, you still haven't addressed one of the cardinal issues: How are you going to deal with the intense hate Arabs have for Israel? How can you broker a peace deal when one side doesn't want peace?

Obama's first objective is not getting us mired down in an untenable position. The coalition that toppled Gadaffi's regime isn't there for Syria, and Syria is much better armed. Also, Obama has to keep military assets in reserve in case Israel attacks Iran and ignites a shit storm.
For him to turn around and go into Syria would be very badly received, mostly (but by no means entirely) on the left.
It's not like the right wing would support such a move either. McConnell's #1 stated priority isn't doing his job, improving the country or economy, but trying to make sure Obama isn't reelected. Hell, Obama toppled the Libyan regime without losing a single American life and gets nothing but criticism.

re: #285 Dark_Falcon
Dealing with the hate will not be as big an issue if a reasonable solution can be reached. The big paranoia I seen (and heard) is that Palestinians and many Arabs think Israel is taking land from them, and trying to push them out, or push them into the worst areas. Israel will have to qualm these fears. There are water fears of the same type.
In addition, both sides need to recognize they have done crap to the other (though Israel overall is a cleaner. Most of its dubious actions were done by Irgun and Lehi. Who became Likud. Which is why I don't trust Likud.)
If a solution is found, things will gradually heal over time. It could be 50 to 100 years. But things would get better. Important also in this is blocking influence of Saudi Arabia they could poison this. Which is why I want Jordan and/or Turkey involved.
Who wants to go swimming?

That was less than two years after 9/11, and it wasn't until 2006 that we found out how bad of a disaster Iraq could be. There's not going to be great enthusiasm for putting our soldiers in a place where Iran's proxies can attack them. That will be assuming that, after Iran's collapse, any of their proxies will be able to stand. Hezbollah will likely be quashed if they do attempt a coup, likely by somebody in NATO. And Hamas has broken from Syria and Iran because of Syria's instability.
I still think that if Syria falls, Iran begins to pop rivets, and leak.

I think President Obama saw the issues involved early on, as did many on the left, and the millions who protested around the world.

In the case of Syria, I would think of it as being UN action after a collapse of Al-Assad, with it being "Peacekeeping on Steroids". In essence, we would be there to prevent a full civil war from breaking out, and to prevent massive Crimes against Humanity. Again, in essence, a more aggressive version of what is done in Africa and Lebanon.
I would imagine support from at least Turkey, and plausibly Iraq (Shia Majority might be worried about Alawites), and perhaps a smattering of other Arab States. Maybe Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, and Libya?
And, with all the links between Iran and Syria, I do think a backflush from Syria to Iran would occur, igniting more unrest. The economic and social situation in Iran is much worse than in 2009.

Neither the Syrian nor Iranian protestors / rebels have organized themselves at the level that the Libyan resistance managed early on, and the Libyans looked like Orks from 40k in terms of organization discipline. Even the Libyan improvised and looted armor was Ork / A-team like in it's ad hoc construction. Libya turned into a grind even though the allies had total air supremacy within something like 48 hours, so it's important to distinguish between what can be bitten off and what can easily be chewed.

As a mom to a son with Asperger's I'd like to point something out(as late in the thread as this may be):
All autistic people are not the same. What you read or hear from doctors and other"experts" shouldn't be taken as a one size fits all piece of advice or information. The fact is,the best scientfic minds in the world only know a very tiny bit about the brain and autism. There are also alot of quacks and bullshit artists out there associated with autism and related developmental disorders, ask for help if you're unsure about something you've read or heard.
I've had to correct many people's assumptions about my kid. One example being that alot of people think all Aspies are good at math. Nope. Another misconception is that Aspies lack empathy or feelings in general. Again, not true. My son has barely passed math classes and will openly weep if he realizes he's hurt someone's feelings. It's not a lack of empathy,it's a lack of social skills that's the problem, in his case at least. It's impossible to develop those skills when people won't give you the chance, that's one of his biggest challenges right now. It's hard to watch him struggle. People can be asshats.
I guess my point is that you should think about who you really are as a person and let the Asperger's be a bit more secondary. I tell my son to try and figure out who he wants to be and work on that part first. The Asperger's is not ALL of who he is,just a part. For what it's worth.

Very well-said. I used to work with kids with autism, and they displayed just as wide a variation on personality and self-knowledge as 'ordinary' people.
I would note that a lack of functional empathy-- as in, difficulty in perceiving other peoples emotions-- is part of the autism spectrum. But you're quite right that that doesn't amount to an actual lack of empathy.

In our household, autism has NEVER been an excuse for bad or inappropriate behavior. Though heaven knows the kid has tried to use that, lol. You have to live in this world and it won't bend to fit you. You have to bend to fit sometimes. The trick is figuring out how to do that without sacrificing who you are. That's true for all of us though. I hope PLL learns that Asperger's is not THE thing that defines him,it's just one thing. You can't ignore it,but it's not the only thing to consider.
I wish there were more services and programs for young adults with autism, there's alot of early intervention and programs for the little ones, but after elementary school the resources dry up. Some colleges have services for students with autism(Marshall is one, others have sprung up in the past few years). Some states have decent vocational rehab programs, but beyond that,it's hit or miss.

Hearing set to determine if Tucson shooting spree suspect is competent for trial
[Link: www.washingtonpost.com...]
SAN DIEGO — A federal judge is set to determine whether the suspect in the Tucson shooting rampage that killed six people and wounded several others, including then-U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, should remain at a federal prison facility where officials are forcibly medicating him.
U.S. District Court Judge Larry Burns said in his court filing that he is inclined to extend the suspect’s stay after learning the chief federal psychologist of Jared Lee Loughner believes the 23-year-old is still not competent to stand trial.
He said that the psychologist noted, however, that his mental state has made “measurable progress” during the roughly six months he has been at the facility in Springfield, Mo., and she believes he will continue to improve.

Your daughter is lucky to have you. I have had zero family support. My inlaws mean well, but they live 800 miles away and have missed most of the kid's childhood. They THINK they know what the deal is,but they really don't.My family is RWNJ central,I have only recently re-established a superficial relationship with my parents after a 10 yr estrangement(my folks are also evangelical christians and think I'm an evil demon devil worshipper, long, long story). I think things would have been alot different for the kid with some decent family support system in place. Sigh. The best bit of advice I would give is to help your granddaughter make and keep these early friendships for as long as possible,it will make the upper grades easier. All my son's friends bailed on him once he got to 7th grade,it's been heartbreaking. He literally has NO friends, and it's not because he doesn't try. I do not get why it's so accepted that kids are so mean to each other, like it's normal. It isn't,not if caring adults create a community where it isn't accepted and not tolerated.

And a final note on the halftime show. If they're going to lip-synch it all, and also spend a lot of time with training and using big dance routines they should stop paying big bucks to pop stars to appear. Hire Baryshnikov (or the modern equivalent) and do something real good with the dance routines and move away from music stars who aren't actually performing music.
(oh, and I did catch that the big Madonna entrance was an homage/replay of Cleopatra (as played by Elizabeth Taylor) arriving in Rome.)

After a short, cold walk.
You are farther down the road than we are--though I can see the social adaptation thing as an issue in a small town. It will inevitably spill over to her older sister, who is super-cool right now. I don't think anyone much knows what the 'real deal' is, so we are open to sane experimentation. (We are quite convinced we're getting some benefit from the gluten/dairy-free diet, and that it only works for a portion of the kids.)
We live a few hours away, in-laws are much closer. They're basically good small-town people who help a lot with sitting and respite. SIL had to get a bunch of libertarian BS out of his system, but he's come around. For a year or so our daughter (an English/Biology teacher) fell into the vaxer crap but we browbeat her back. It shows how powerful the need for an 'answer' is. Local doctors tended to the less-than-useless. The second one diagnosed Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

365 | Fat Bastard Vegetarian Mon, Feb 6, 2012 6:19:56am |
I thought it was very stirring. The commercial even stands without the images.
It’s halftime. Both teams are in their locker room discussing what they can do to win this game in the second half.
It’s halftime in America, too. People are out of work and they’re hurting. And they’re all wondering what they’re going to do to make a comeback. And we’re all scared, because this isn’t a game.
The people of Detroit know a little something about this. They almost lost everything. But we all pulled together, now Motor City is fighting again.
I’ve seen a lot of tough eras, a lot of downturns in my life. And, times when we didn’t understand each other. It seems like we’ve lost our heart at times. When the fog of division, discord, and blame made it hard to see what lies ahead.
But after those trials, we all rallied around what was right, and acted as one. Because that’s what we do. We find a way through tough times, and if we can’t find a way, then we’ll make one.
All that matters now is what’s ahead. How do we come from behind? How do we come together? And, how do we win?
Detroit’s showing us it can be done. And, what’s true about them is true about all of us.
This country can’t be knocked out with one punch. We get right back up again and when we do the world is going to hear the roar of our engines.
Yeah, it’s halftime America. And, our second half is about to begin.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area; home to the World Champion NY football Giants. Kudos to the team and am really looking forward to seeing tomorrow's parade from my office along the Canyon of Heroes. Gonna be fun.
The game was a nail biter to the end, and it's amazing that after rattling off 16 completions in a row during the 2-3d quarters, Brady couldn't get the key receptions in the final minute to get them where they needed to go. Still, amazing end and Eli ends all questions about his game for all time. You don't go and win 2 super bowls without doing something special during those seasons and down the stretch. MVP twice in the Super Bowl. Yeah, I'd say so.
What wasn't so mvp? The ads.
There were a couple of good ones. The Volkswagen dog ad that was a meta for the Star Wars ad was fun (and played on last year's theme too). The Doritos dog burying the cat and bribing the owner was funny (and done by an amateur in the Doritos contest to boot!).
Just saw the Clint ad and thought it was okay.
Thought that the Fiat Aberth commercial was funny (the very attractive Italian woman with the schlub oogling the car at the end). Very Italian and true to the car.
But for among the worst? The Caddy "green hell" commercial. Sorry, but car enthusiasts don't need the nickname for Nürburgring. Just say the name. You lose street cred with me when you're gearing for enthusiasts (and there's something more authentic when you call it by it's Teutonic name). It's a commercial that had potential, and just washed out.
The Go Daddy commercials have worn thin.

Jets coach Rex Ryan, who was all talk, didn't know that his team was imploding all around him, and still thought he coached the best team in NY (and that they'd world champs to boot). Right. Bush did start the auto bailouts which was something that the right wing continues to ignore. Obama stepped it up. In the context, which is important here we have a couple of issues. One, Bush is not running for reelection and the right wing refuses to acknowledge his hand in the bailouts. Another being that Obama is the one who is being hammered by the right wing since 2009 for the Chrysler bailout. In order for this line of thinking to work the right wing would have to acknowledge Bush's hand in this and stop complaining not only about this ad (which they've been doing since last night) and shut the heck up.
Which won't happen.

1) It would be memorable for fans of both teams

3) It might be as good a game as Super Bowl 42 (also won by NY)

The Fiat Aberth ad has been around for a few weeks already at least. Saw it while watching one of the earlier football playoff games.
I note that most of the ads still play males as solely interested in fast cars, beer, and nubile women in bikinis. Going with what the focus groups say works I guess - but at what point do they blur together so that you can't associate any product with the ad?
395 | Gus Mon, Feb 6, 2012 7:04:24am |
I think this ad might become a bit a portable conspiracy theory however. One in which it's message can mean whatever the viewer so desires. Most of which will play into confirmation bias. It really wasn't an Obama ad at all. Perhaps it could be used that way. But the final message is for Chrysler who wants to sell cars and make bigger profits.

The wingnuts lapsed into dopey populist economics right after the election. Moonbats did it recently with OWS. I think American car manufacturing is probably doomed but in the context of the economic crisis the bailout was probably the right thing to do. Same with the bank bailouts, it was an economic necessity. I think it's perfectly reasonable to complain that the problem hasn't been fixed (I think the mega-banks should be broken up) but to rail against the bailouts is just silly.

Actually it's worse than that. There's a lot of interesting accounting done in editorials to "prove" that they haven't really paid back the loan and that we're still propping them up. Math reminds of what you see by troofers talking of how the airplanes couldn't possibly have caused explosions that large and effective all by themselves; there had to be pre-planted explosives.

re: #385 Gus 802
I was opposed to the auto bailouts - the bankruptcies were coming regardless of the bailouts. An argument can be made that the bailouts gave GM and Chrysler time to get the reorganization done, but considering that the reorganization was expedited anyways, and under the same basic conditions, the money used by the Bush bailout was meant to push talk of bankruptcy into the Obama Administration. The Obama bailout was giving GM and Chrysler a second chance, and when that failed, the bankruptcy reorganizations occurred, with the feds taking ownership stock in both companies.
Thing is - bankruptcy (reorganization, not liquidation) doesn't have quite the stigma it used to have. But throwing good money after bad does have a stigma, and that's what the bailouts were.

If it hadn't been for the similar ad last year I would not have had a clue what it was an ad for until the very end. Which was a bit riveting since I was curious to know who had gone 180 degrees from just about all the previous ads. Serious, not trying for laughs or the obvious attention grabbers - so who is doing it?
And with the voice narrating it I was half-expecting it to be a Colbert SuperPAC ad.

The real message from that commercial that the haters (of all types) will never get is simple. As Americans, what binds us together is far more important than what divides us. Politics and religion are our two most divisive issues, so it is important to remember that life is about more than "balkanizing" ourselves into smaller "tribes." The genius of our country is that we have always striven to do just the opposite, and it worked well.

I think any inspirational advertising for Chrysler will be read as being pro-Obama given the context of today's political climate. David Axelrod's Tweet last night also helped to promote that idea. This is not as uncommon as you may think. When I went to fix the horn on the Volkswagen, I discovered that the previous owner had bolted an air horn to the wheel well. In this particular location, however, the mounting bolt was completely inaccessible except by strapping a midget to a 2x4 and threading him up between two panels of sheet metal. I chose to mount the new horn in a different, more accessible location.

This is from last April...
The WSJ explains:
The U.S. government plans to sell a significant share of its remaining stake in General Motors Co. this summer despite the disappointing performance of the auto maker’s stock, people familiar with the matter said.
A sale within the next several months would almost certainly mean U.S. taxpayers will take a loss on their $50 billion rescue of the Detroit auto maker in 2009.
To break even, the U.S. Treasury would need to sell its remaining stake—about 500 million shares—at $53 apiece. GM closed off 27 cents a share at $29.97 in 4 p.m. trading Monday on the New York Stock Exchange, hitting a new low since its $33-a-share November initial public offering.
“Planning for the sale of our remaining GM stock is still at an early stage, and the IPO lock-up does not expire until late May,” a Treasury spokesperson said. “At that point, we will consider all of our options, based on our twin goals of protecting taxpayers’ interests and exiting as soon as practicable.”
Anybody know what happened with that?

Why did the NFL make Youtube take down Clint Eastwood's Chrysler ad?
Of last night's commercials, Chrysler's Clint Eastwood ad was undoubtably one of the best. So why did the NFL claim copyright on the video and force YouTube to pull it down this morning? UPDATE!
The YouTube version of the ad was uploaded to Chrysler's account right around when the spot first aired last night and was racking up serious views. Then, this morning, the video was pulled due to a "copyright claim by NFL Properties LLC."
Since the ad contained no video of any NFL games (you can still see the spot here) the reasoning is unclear. Contacted this morning, an equally confused Chrysler rep said they were trying to get to the bottom of it and had uploaded it elsewhere.
Is this a case of SOPA abuse??

The feds still own significant numbers of GM stock, and it still will require GM stock price being above 55 to break even on the bailout. As it stands, the stock price is $26.33 (which is below the $33 offer price when the stock was reissued following the reorganization). So, while the feds want to get out of the ownership position, doing so would mean a loss for taxpayers at this point. It becomes a question of fiduciary responsibility and political promises.
Get out of GM because the politicians promised to do so (sticking taxpayers with a multibillion dollar loss - and bad optics, especially in light of the big profits now reaped by the company), or stay in and hope the stock price rebounds to the point where the stock can be sold off for less of a loss, or even eke out a profit on the deal. I think the politics will prevail, but in the grand scheme, those working for GM will take it.

True, SOPA is not in effect yet, but this is something that would become very easy step for any organization which objects to certain material. Youtube films would be yanked before any investigation. Just to annoy a competitor you could pull this trick. Chrysler uploaded this clip themselves so I guess they are at least the owners of the content. How in the hell was the NFL able to convince Youtube to get the clip offline in the first place without being a party in the whole thing?

I've seen that on BoardGameGeek. Someone made a video on how to play a game seeking to help others who want to play it and posted it on YouTube. Got yanked due to a DMCA claim by the manufacturer of the game, so the guy simply refuses to waste time attempting to do the same for any other of their distributed games.
Sounds like some sort of robo-search of YouTube or other open content sites. What makes this particular situation odd is that we're talking about re-running advertising for a company. That's free publicity for Chrysler, and yet the NFL (aka the no-fun-league) apparently has a copyright violation request in with YouTube, so they've pulled it. Seems to me that someone at NFL is overzealous in that regards, and that the ad will eventually be reposted. It is available through MSNBC and some other outlets though.

That's more or less the gist of it. The best example of this behavior is that which culminated in the lawsuit Viacom v. YouTube. Viacom basically wanted YouTube shut down because they found so much "infringing material". What they failed to mention was that much of it was uploaded by - you guessed it - Viacom itself. They also failed to demonstrate that Google had not acted in accordance with the DMCA safe harbor provision. They are currently appealing the summary judgement ruling against them.

Occupy Oakland Plans "Anti-Police" Day of Action
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Occupy Oakland protesters are planning more demonstrations against police and are pledging to fill city courtrooms during upcoming hearings.
Organizers have called for a so-called "Day of Action" to start Monday morning in the movement's ongoing conflict with police over tactics used during earlier protests.
A rally scheduled for noon in front of Oakland City Hall is scheduled to feature recently jailed protesters speaking out against police.
Activists also say they will pack courtrooms during morning and afternoon hearings where they say attorneys working with Occupy Oakland will present evidence of unlawful arrests.
A late January clash between protesters and police in which City Hall was vandalized and an American flag burned led to more than 400 arrests.

That soup I had must have had beef broth in it." Your system's kickin' back broth? You're a manly man, aren't you?

Two terrorist organizations have formed a partnership...
Palestinians announce agreement for unity government
REPORTING FROM JERUSALEM -- Palestinian factions said Monday they had broken a political impasse by agreeing to make Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas head of a proposed unity government between the secular Fatah Party and the Islamist militant movement Hamas.
Abbas would serve as president and prime minister, replacing current Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, who was favored by Abbas and the international community to continue in that role but was rejected by Hamas leaders as being too pro-Western.
As president, Abbas was already in a position to play a leading role in the unity government, which was announced in May 2011. The government was never formed due to political in-fighting between Hamas and Fatah.
The appointment of Abbas, the leader of Fatah, to the additional role of prime minister is a shift from the original agreement, which called for a nonpartisan government of technocrats from neither party.
Now they can share their collection of rockets, bombs, and other weapons with each other.

Thing is - Brady's receivers caught everything thrown through most of the 2d and 3d quarter, and then couldn't catch stuff that was free and clear in the 4th.

Is Al-Qaeda preparing British women bombers?
LONDON: Al-Qaeda is trying to recruit women for carrying out suicide bombings in Britain, parliament members have warned in a report.
The terrorist group is using extremist websites to radicalise the "angels of death", the Daily Sun quoted MPs as stating in their report.
As per the Commons home affairs committee, it has heard evidence that the terror group is "specifically launching and targeting women for violent acts".
The MPs' panel report comes days after four Islamic extremists admitted plotting to bomb the London Stock Exchange.

Romney Campaign Spins Low Turn Out: Voters Staying At Home Secretly Support Romney
With just 33,000 voters showing up to the Nevada caucuses on Saturday, Republicans may be quietly concerned about a lack of enthusiasm for their candidates — and especially front-runner Mitt Romney — after another primary state produces lower-than-expected turnout.
But not former New Hampshire governor John Sununu. The Romney campaign surrogate appeared on MSNBC this morning and offered a novel interpretation of the low figures:
SUNUNU: In an odd sense when turnout is down, contrary to what you are hearing, people are satisfied with the winning and the candidate that’s winning. They are satisfied with Mitt Romney.

Nice to see the current dictator in Syria following in the footsteps of the previous dictator. Bashar al-Assad is busy filling the shoes of his dad Hafez, who used the same kind of tactics to crush those opposed to his regime.
We saw it 30 years ago when Hafez razed the town of Hama, killing tens of thousands of people, primarily members of the Muslim Brotherhood, who rose against the regime. Now, Bashar's loyalists are murdering people all across the country who have dared oppose the regime in peaceful protests, which has led to defections in the security forces - escalating the violence significantly.

I hang out on an IRC channel during football games and the concept comes up. It's a more esoteric level of game strategy when you start giving up points on purpose in order to gain a better position towards potentially winning the game. And the countervailing strategy to avoid scoring in order to improve one's chances.
Thus you get into intentional safeties, falling down on the one yard line, avoiding the end zone as long as possible (done in an Eagles game last year where a player ran along the 1-yard line a ways in order to use up time), etc.

re: #572 Killgore Trout
Considering the very low bar for nominating someone for the Nobel Peace Prize, I'm surprised that at some time in the near future that it wont be on everyone's resume (Nobel Peace Prize nominee).
Just look at the process. Any one of the following can nominate:
1. Members of national assemblies and governments of states;
2. Members of international courts;
3. University rectors; professors of social sciences, history, philosophy, law and theology; directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes;
4. Persons who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize;
5. Board members of organizations who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize;
6. Active and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee; (proposals by members of the Committee to be submitted no later than at the first meeting of the Committee after February 1) and
7. Former advisers appointed by the Norwegian Nobel Institute.
The Nobel Peace Prize may also be awarded to institutions and associations.
All it takes is one nutty professor to submit Manning's name, and boom - he's a "nominee".

re: #582 Killgore Trout
Hell, I think he has a shot at winning. The Nobel committee has picked worse people in the past.
...
Hell the Nobel prize committee is run a bunch of elitist European socialists hell bent on undermining the sovereignty of these here United States of America and it would not surprise me in the least of they gave the Nobel peace prize to that Communist-secular Marxist homosexual spy Bradley Manning. Heck they already gave one to none other than Barrack Hussien Obama. They're just like that there United Nations and their damn hell blue helmets.

I just read a column where the recommended strategy for the Giants would have been to just take a knee and force the timeout, then take the chip shot on 3rd down, leaving open the possibility of falling on the ball if the snap wasn't perfect.

re: #581 Fat Bastard Vegetarian
Right, because no one has ever fumbled on a goal line in a clutch situation, nor has anyone ever missed a chip shot field goal.
Sorry, but if I'm seeing the clear TD, I'm taking it - and then trusting in my defense to make the stop and seal the win. Belechik overthought that whole thing. Make the Giants beat him with a field goal (you have the lead after all that that point), but give the easy TD?
Also, consider that if the Giants wanted to run down the clock even more, they could have called a sweep right or left, but instead ran it up the middle. They wanted the score (and to keep the FG option going well, with a straight shot instead of on the hash side). Defense wants to give me a free TD? In the Super Bowl? I'm taking it.

re: #574 Fat Bastard Vegetarian
Bing Crodny had called exactly what would happen back at #63.
True, but I also said 18-17. While I thought the smarter play would be to give up the TD and then hope you can take it down the field, I also thought they'd do the same ol' thing that never seems to work: defend, and then put in a last ditch effort to try and block the field goal. Had they done that, there would have been no time to try for a matching field goal.
Welker probably should have caught that ball, but Mankins going offsides in a situation that tight was the killer: it gave the Giants another chance, and they took advantage of it.

Fact is, despite a few hiccups on occasion (such as the 96-yard massive drive to end the half), the Giants hadn't done a half bad job of being all up in Brady's business. I would've been okay with putting my defense on the field with a minute to go. Burn some time? Sure, but make sure you get the score at the end.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) — Nobel Peace Prize officials were facing a formal inquiry over accusations they have drifted away from the prize's original selection criteria by choosing such winners as President Barack Obama, as the nomination deadline for the 2012 awards closed Wednesday...

Thing is, we all know the Nobel Peace Prize is effectively a joke. I don't begrudge Obama his award, but after they gave it to Yasser Arafat, of all people, I just have no respect for the Peace Prize anymore.

If it's already been established that the Nobel Peace Prize is a sham than why feed into the derangement.

Exactly. It would be very easy for a college professor to write a letter calling Lady GaGa or Dan Savage humanitarians and human rights advocates for their tireless LGBT activism and nominate them for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Winning is a whole other story. I highly doubt Manning would win. Vaclav Havel and Gandhi didn't win the Peace Prize and I'm supposed to believe that Bradley Manning has a chance? ROFL.

The great satirist of the 60's, Tom Lehrer, once said that political satire became obsolete when Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
I'd amend that statement to include the Nobel as well.
