Video: Newt Gingrich’s 1986 Speech on Ronald Reagan’s Failures

“The Reagan administration has failed … Harry Truman accomplished vastly more”
Politics • Views: 26,351

In the Republican debates, Newt Gingrich is always the first to invoke the hallowed name of Ronald Reagan, taking credit for helping Reagan implement the foreign policy initiatives that led to the fall of the Soviet Union.

Flashback to 1986, as Newt gives a floor speech blasting Ronald Reagan for the “failure” of his foreign policy initiatives, and praising Democratic President Harry Truman for accomplishing much more in the same time period.

Real Reagan wasn't Idolized-Vision-of-Reagan enough?

Man, it's so weird watching Newt be almost right about something.

8 What, me worry?  Mon, Feb 6, 2012 12:14:09pm

I'd really like to look at his playbook. The man is such a sleaze with his lies. Not an ounce of integrity.

Yesterday on Meet the Press, he was having a field day slamming the welfare system, and while I like David Gregory as a host, the show needs someone much smarter, because Gregory never mentioned the fact that NEWT and President Clinton reformed welfare. So if there are any problems with it, it's at least partly Newt's fault. In fact, Clinton kept vetoing the welfare reform bill because he didn't like it and finally settled on having something. The reason it is the way it is today is because of NEWT!

Besides, the reality is that welfare is not designed for people to stay on it indefinitely, because of welfare reform NEWT enacted!

Dead honest, I didn't watch it because I'm at work. So let me retract my previous statement. Let's try this one instead:

The idea of Gingrich criticizing Reagan for any reason is refreshing, because I think Reagan sucked in a lot of ways. I should, of course, know better than to assume any of Gingrich's reasons are valid or sensible.

He's just going for the "moderate Republican" vote...26 years ahead of when he expects to need their votes...no one could have anticipated that they'd be extinct by 2010.

In his defense, Gingrich couldn't have envisioned a time in the distant future when a speech didn't just get broadcast once on cable tv to an audience of 30 people on treadmills at the gym (and with the sound turned off) and then thrown into the back of a closet at C-SPAN.

And even if 2012 Newt got in a time machine made out of a Delorean and traveled back to 1986 to warn himself, 1986 Newt wouldn't believe him and would just laugh and say, "Yeah, right. When a black guy's President!"

Easy to explain-Partisan distortions of the facts.
That recession was not nearly as bad so one would not expect as dramatic a recovery. Reagan may be the most lied about President ever or maybe tied with Clinton. The right exaggerates about how great, the left exaggerates the negatives.

How bad a recession is, for an individual, depends on how it hits your individual family.

The 80's recession was terrible for my family. This one has had much less of an impact on my husband and me. (I am not underplaying it, I'm just saying it hasn't had nearly the impact on my family that the 80's recession did.)

If the supreme's get it they may just throw it back to the state saying it's the state's issue to sort out. For the conservatives on the bench it would be a CYA move, they can say they aren't being biggoted and don't have any bias while at the same time saying to the right "hey, states rights". Are you implying that if you opened up the top of Cantor's head you'd find a little blue man in a kilt there running the controls who'd look up surprised and yell "Crivens!"?

Cruel and unusual punishment. Same if they forced you to start drinking Bud Light Lime.

re: #85 Sergey Romanov

I could parse what pardon means but then pardon isn't exactly defined. Rather it's a prerogative, a magic escape clause. So it's better to establish parallels and work towards an operational definition. From Wikipedia:

In 2006 all British soldiers executed for cowardice during World War I were pardoned, resolving a long-running controversy about the justice of their executions.

Turing's pardon was denied because the prosecution was procedurally correct yet the soldiers were pardoned because of questions about the justice of the matter.

I doubt you'd find much if you opened the top of cantor's head.

Hi Lizards..If the SuperBowl is going to continue to be on Sunday nights then I think Monday should be a federal holiday.
Note to self..When I'm King of the world make this happen.

I'm willing to accept that this is just me, but does the 'Young Newt' kinda give you a Justin Bieber vibe? The hair, the posture... It's probably just me.

Exactly 3 minutes into the video is an image that sums up Newt's career.

And the crowd roared to its feet!

[crickets]

Word cloud: Reagan, McGovernite, Transnational, etc. It's always a gas listening to men like Gingrich speak of transnationalism when they themselves hold onto an ideology of transnationalism themselves.

Romney distanced himself from Reagan and Bush I when he ran against Kennedy.Guess Newt's like this too- against Reagan before he worshiped him.
