Santorum Upsets Romney’s Apple Cart

The most reactionary GOP candidate wins in three states
Politics • Views: 32,667

Rick Santorum’s big wins last night in Minnesota, Colorado, and Missouri are important signs of the power of reactionary religious thinking in today’s right wing.

Of all the candidates, Santorum is by far the most fanatical; he’s absolutely opposed to all contraception, wants to see abortion made completely illegal, is anti-gay to an insane degree, and is a hard core creationist and global warming denier. He’s the poster boy for Republican atavism, an anti-science avatar for the Tea Party set.

People like Rick Santorum are one of the major reasons why I had to make a public break with the right. They make America a laughing stock to the rest of the world with their backward, deliberately ignorant ideology. And that’s why this coming Presidential election is so important. Blind fanatics like Santorum must not be allowed to gain access to the highest office in the United States.

Did Romney just forget there were caucuses yesterday?

I just don't think he bothered with them. To quote the great philosopher, prognosticator, guitarist, blog owner, Charles Johnson... "Mitt Romney is the nominee."

The thought of this man in a seat of power scares the living hell out of me.

He's also not someone I would underestimate in a general election.

*shivers*

I hope Santorum and Gingrich take it as far as possible. Romney is the inevitable nominee, but I'll enjoy seeing the Republican freak show.

No I don't think that's it. I think the "anyone but Romney" movement is getting stronger. As the caucuses pass by and Right wingers see him get ever closer to being the nominee, they panic and throw their support behind other candidates.

In this case they have correctly chosen Rick Santorum over Ron Paul or Newt Gingrich. Gingrich has too much baggage and Paul's white supremacist ties and mix of liberal/conservative views on some issues are a turn off to the base.

Of the guys that are left, only Santorum and Romney have been primarily scandal free. Oh sure, Santorum has said stupid stuff but he hasn't been caught stepping out on his wife or hanging out with KKK types or caught up in a sexual harassment mess...or at least not the point where it turns the base off and they move on.

I think the reality is setting in on them that Ron Paul and Gingrich are not very viable candidates and so the ONLY option left is Santorum.

Honestly, I'd love to see Santorum get the nomination, wingnut himself into complete oblivion in the debates and get absolutely pulverized by Obama in the general. THAT would be the wake up call the GOP needs.

Too true. In the disastrous event of, say, Newt Gingrich being elected president, we could at least count on his insincerity and cynicism to leave the door open for a slight amount of tolerance and sanity. With this all-too-sincere loon, it would be the end of America as we know it.

I wonder whether that baby died because of Trisomy 18, which their youngest child is suffering from now.

No, it had posterior urethral valves. These can keep a kidney from draining, and destroy it. The Santori chose experimental fetal surgery at 20 weeks; one of the risks is infection, and that's what happened. Mom became septic, so they chose to terminate the pregnancy. In other words, they had an abortion for medical reasons, to save the life of the mother.

Proposed Kansas Law Would Allow Doctors to Withhold Information from Women to Prevent Abortion

A Kansas House committee is scheduled to take up a bill Wednesday that would exempt doctors from malpractice suits if they withheld medical information to prevent an abortion. The measure would also take away tax credits for abortion providers, remove tax deductions for the purchase of abortion-related insurance coverage and require women to hear the fetal heartbeat. The bill includes several provisions, which passed in other states and now face federal lawsuits. The bill would also require women be told about potential breast cancer risks from abortions, even though medical experts discount such a connection.

...

Among the most contested provisions of the bill is the section that would exempt a doctor from a medical malpractice suit if a woman claims the physician withheld information about potential birth defects to prevent her from having an abortion. In addition, a woman would not be able to sue if she suffers health damage from a pregnancy as a result of information withheld from her to prevent an abortion. A wrongful death suit could still be filed, however, if the mother died.

Santorum Invents New Front In Fake War On Religion: Obama Wants Female Catholic Priests

On Fox News this morning, GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum doubled down on this bizarre claim that Obama is going after religion — falsely claiming that the president wants to tell Catholics who they can hire as priests:

What they’ve done here is a direct assault on the First Amendment, not only a direct assault on the freedom of religion, by forcing people specifically to do things that are against their religious teachings. . . . This is a president who, just recently, in this Hosanna-Tabor case was basically making the argument that Catholics had to, you know, maybe even had to go so far as to hire women priests to comply with employment discrimination issues. This is a very hostile president to people of faith. He’s a hostile president, not just to people of faith, but to all freedoms.

The most horrifying thing you can say about one of the Republican presidential candidates is that he believes absolutely everything he says. It's pretty instructive about the state of the modern GOP.

That is seen by many as a strength. Even if conservative voters do not agree with his all of his convictions, many of them prefer a candidate who adheres to a clearly defined set of principles.

The ability to project that image is what helped make Dubya. Romney is unable to present that image, the only thing he seems to adhere to is political expediency.

Santorum Invents New Front In Fake War On Religion: Obama Wants Female Catholic Priests

What a moron. Obama's only involvement with Hosanna-Tabor that I know of was to have a brief filed that the employee could sue, apparently on the grounds that being a minister should not mean you're not protected by federal law.

The SCOTUS sided with the employer, 9-0.

End of story.

Take note, Rick, because this is an important lesson on the separation of powers.

Oh, Jimmah and I encountered a racist today. Some fucker outside the pub mentioned the number of "spearchuckers" he now sees in Scotland.

I said, are you talking about BLACK PEOPLE? Jimmah gave him a good bollucking.

As you might expect, the asshole claimed his best friend is black and loves the spearchucker label.

nonetheless, he did apologise many times and told us he isn't a racist. Yeah, right!

I had a woman in the shop yesterday who said she was having 'a serious man-hating week' (or month, I can't remember which). She said, "I just want to kill them all, even the dear ones." This was in the context of having me, a woman, work on her bike instead of the guys down the street. All I could say was, "Well, I've got a nice one at home, so I'm not going to tell you where I live." She laughed and said, "It OK, I've been keeping it contained." After she left I wondered whether I should have told her not to bring her bike in.

Good for you two for confronting the asshole.

Spearchucker Bags Missouri Deer; Hunter is First to Kill Animal with Primitive Weapon

For the first time in modern history, a Missouri hunter has harvested a deer using the atlatl, an ancient weapon that allows users to launch a spear at speeds over 100 m.p.h.

The Missouri Conservation Department first allowed the use of the atlatl during last year's deer season. But it wasn't until opening day of this year's season -- November 12 -- that an atlatl hunter finally got his prey.

The kill happened in suburban St. Louis, near Clayton and Clarkson Roads.

Luke Boenker, 54, of Maryland Heights, tells the conservation department that he spied the four-point buck about 15 yards from his deer stand. Boenker "grunted to get the deer to pause" (of course he did!) and then let loose a seven-foot dart that pierced the animal's back and rib cage. The animal fell about 150 yards from where it was first speared.

"It was the ultimate feeling," said Boenker, an accomplished outdoorsman who'd grown bored with hunting by rifle and bow.

It was much fun seeing Newt in twist in the wind. I do hate that fatuous blowhard but then it was a little disturbing to see Ron Paul get into the 20s. I hate him too.

Admittedly, this is a race where I want everyone to come in last, but I thought Santorum was toast after Florida. I was beginning to taste the Romney inevitability koolaide. Instead I think what's inevitable is the SoCon meltdown.

Just when you think the Right Wing wackos can't go further over the cliff, they somersault and piroette into a swan dive over the cliff.

When I was a sophomore in high school, we put on a production of "M*A*S*H".

We had a white guy play "Spearchucker Jones".

It wasn't thumbing the nose at the racism. Neither the director, the cast, and not one other person associated with it even knew that "spearchucker" was a racist expression. We found out later after the production was finished.

From a half white/half black high school... in the South.

Wanna know how we found out? We got a letter from a local black minister thanking us for casting a white guy in the role.

That's actually an unfair attack on Santorum. I'm completely anti-Santorum, but during that delivery, at every point there was a choice to risk the mothers health to save the fetus, they took it. It was only when there was imminent risk of death to both that they moved to save the mother.

But they had the choice. And they were allowed to make it No one made the choice for them. And they made the choice knowing full well that the fetus would die.

It was an abortion.

And their co-politicants would deny women this same choice.

Women are dying in theocratic states (and I'm talking Catholic, BTW) because they can't make the choice. Abortion is absolutely illegal, and performing one condemns doctors and nurses to long prison terms. Even if a mother's life is at risk.

Actually, Mrs. Santorum asked the doctor to give her something to stop the contractions, but the doctor wouldn't because it would be malpractice.

Rick Santorum did say that he'd be okay with inducing labor in order to save his wife's life, but it's not what happened. So, you can say there's the hypocrisy there, but not in their actual actions. Which is plenty.

Apparently there's quite a bit of this atlatl stuff going on, with college teams even:
From Wikipedia Atlatl

In modern times, some people have resurrected the spearthrower for sports, often using the term atlatl, throwing either for distance and/or for accuracy. Throws of almost 260 m (850 ft) have been recorded. Colleges reported to field teams in this event include Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire, Alfred University in New York, and the University of Vermont. There are numerous tournaments, with spears and spearthrowers built with both ancient and with modern materials. Similar devices are available to throw tennis balls for dogs to chase, and in the sport of jai alai.

At least President Franklin Pierce is becoming known for something, even if it is just competitive spear chucking.

Well, according to this...

Santorum is possibly the most fervent top-tier anti-abortionist left in the presidential race. He firmly believes in the preservation of life. Additionally, he also makes an exception for pregnancies that presents mortal danger to a mother. He has an unblemished 100% voting record for pro-life legislations. During his time as a member of the House of Representative and Senator for Pennsylvania, he voted anti-choice 99 times out of a hundred (House 27/27, Senate 72/73).

And a lot of his actual votes are against even that exception, like his vote on the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003, which states this:

(1) A moral, medical, and ethical consensus exists that the practice of performing a partial-birth abortion... is a gruesome and inhumane procedure that is never medically necessary and should be prohibited.

Which is a total lie.

Yes, it does -- Santorum would criminalize ALL abortions, with no exceptions. Including cases where the life of the mother is in danger.

No, you didn't. To be fair, Santorum makes it hard by holding contradictory positions, but abortion because the woman is in mortal danger is different than abortion because the pregnancy is dangerous for her.

And Santorum's actual votes usually don't hold true to his exception.

Its a sad, sad day in Harpy Town

Sue Myrick Retires: So Long, And Thanks For All The Muslim-Baiting

Myrick leaves behind a lengthy record — of some amazing comments about alleged Muslim infiltration of the United States. So before we lose the chance, let’s relive the memories.

Way back in 2003, Myrick said at a Heritage Foundation event on national security, during the Q&A session: “You know, and this can be misconstrued, but honest to goodness (husband) Ed and I for years, for 20 years, have been saying, ‘You know, look at who runs all the convenience stores across the country.’ Every little town you go into, you know?”

In October 2009, Myrick joined with thee other House members, Paul Brown (R-GA), Trent Franks (R-AZ), and John Shadegg (R-AZ), to call for an investigation of Muslim interns on Capitol Hill. The allegation was that they were part of a radical Islamist conspiracy to infiltrate the House of Representatives, by seeking positions on key national security-related committees.

The source was a book, Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That’s Conspiring to Islamize America, based on a co-writer’s infiltration of the Council on American-Islamic Relations disguised as a recent Muslim convert. (The same author has also referred to President Obama as “our Muslim leader,” and claimed to have personally found Iraqi weapons of mass destruction as an Air Force agent — but the weapons were then stolen from under our noses by the Syrians.)

Myrick wrote the foreword for the book, which was published by World Net Daily — the right-wing news site best known for being the chief organ for “Birther” conspiracy theories opposing President Obama’s eligibility to hold office.

Some lovely background on VDARE here

"America was defined — almost explicitly, sometimes very explicitly — as a white nation, for white people, and what that means is that there is virtually no figure, no law, no policy, no event in the history of the old, white America that can survive the transition to the new and non-white version. Whether we will want to call the new updated version ‘America’ at all is another question entirely."

— Sam Francis, VDARE.com, July 21, 2003

"Jewish activity collectively, throughout history, is best understood as an elaborate and highly successful group competitive strategy directed against neighboring peoples and host societies. The objective has been control of economic resources and political power. One example: overwhelming Jewish support for non-traditional immigration, which has the effect of weakening America’s historic white majority."

— Kevin MacDonald, VDARE.com, Nov. 14, 2006

"What race realists find most infuriating about the liberalism of the last half century is not just that it has lost its instinctive appreciation for the culture and people of the West but actively, viciously attacks them. Whites are doing something no other people have ever done in human history. Our rulers and elites welcome replacement by aliens, they vilify our ancestors and their own, they sacrifice our interests to those of favored minorities, and they treat the entire history of the West as if it were a global plague of rapine and exploitation. This is a disease that is killing us, and we must fight it head on."

Romney To Appear In Maine On Friday...With Yachts

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, fresh off some stinging defeats at the hands of former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum in the Minnesota and Colorado caucuses, is heading to Maine to campaign ahead of the final Republican caucuses in the state this Saturday. One of his stops in the Pine Tree State? Portland Yacht Services.

Romney, who has faced numerous attacks over his tenue as the CEO of a major private equity firm and his tax rate (Romney paid a 13.9 percent rate last year, as his income comes predominently from investments), continues to look uncomfortable addressing his own personal wealth on the stump. But an appearance at a marina that serves yachts is a near sure-fire way to remind the media and voters alike about the narrative.

Kevin B. MacDonald (born January 24, 1944) is a professor of psychology at California State University, Long Beach, best known for his use of evolutionary psychology to support his theory that Judaism is a "group evolutionary strategy."

MacDonald's most controversial claim is that a suite of traits that he attributes to Jews, including higher-than-average verbal intelligence and ethnocentricism, have eugenically evolved to enhance the ability of Jews to conspire to out-compete non-Jews for resources while undermining the power and self-confidence of the white majorities in Europe and America whom he insists Jews seek to disposess.[1][2][3]

BLITZER: That's where you make --

He has signed the Personhood USA pledge, which doesn't spell out the consequences of declaring fertilized eggs as persons under the law, but presumably one would have to argue 'self-defense' to get an abortion if it became law. Romney has not signed, saying it should be done state-by-state.

No no no. Kevin MacDonald writes about all Jews. He doesn't hide behind Breivik's and Rush's political correctness. He pretends to analyze the "Jewish Question" in general in his books and articles. His main theory is that Jews evolved to be such [insert his adjectives here]. So it's genetic to him.

Interesting fella to be speaking.

Actually, I think this should be turned around. Any Doctor that would follow this, cannot be a medical doctor, loses their license as a medical doctor and must be reclassified as a "faith healer".

It's the wedge from which Kansas will ban all malpractice suits and then become the Mecca of MDs much as corporations flock to Delaware, insurance to Connecticut and credit card companies to South Dakota.

And it's full of fail even then.

Some lovely background on VDARE here

If you were of a mind to forward that to the Pres Obama re-elect campaign, I'm sure they would appreciate it.

Fox Guests Discuss ‘Nightmare’ Of Paying Hotel Maids More

Varney, who was on Fox & Friends after the State Of The Union to rail against the President “beating up” on millionaires and businesses, was discussing the previous night’s election results with his panel.

“Listen to this,” he began. ”This is a financial program, so let’s talk about money”. Discussing a recent union proposal to give panic buttons to maids, Varney brought up maids’ pay and their union’s push to raise it to $60,000 over seven years.

“This is a nightmare,” added his guest, saying that the move will hit “everybody who has to foot the bill”.

Not to be outdone, Varney’s other guest Mark Simone chipped in, adding “They’re getting a lot of money. It was shocking how much they get”.

BLITZER: What about life of the mother?

SANTORUM: Oh, I -- no, the life of the mother is choosing between one life or another. And the government has no role to play if you like, know what I mean and whatnot. How about them Giants, eh?

BLITZER: So if the -- you would accept an abortion to save the mother's life?

SANTORUM: If it's -- if it's a choice between two lives, then that's a decision that -- I'd leave to the state! The state should decide!

BLITZER: That's where you make --

SANTORUM: -- Damn straight! Doobie woobie!

BLITZER: That's where you draw the line?

SANTORUM: If it's scoobiedoobie and if it's doo-wop and the mother's life is not in danger, then you can't take another life.

Coherence!

The Republican clown car would be funny were it not for the fact that Obama has a real chance of losing to them. I mean in light of all the campaign promises and ideals he has betrayed, he has alienated his constituency and reduced himself to a "better me than them" kind of candidate.

So, not a lot of laughter coming from us over here. Instead, we look in awe at the trainwreck unfolding in slow-motion.
