The Mrs. has this on in the background. I'm surfin' the net and checking out info on my new camera. Caught the opening, and LL did a good job of paying tribute and moving things along. Tastefully done.

It's hard not to note Whitney's death - she was one of the biggest stars in music for 20 years, and I like the way that he wanted the crowd to celebrate her life and her music as the lasting tribute.

However, The Starland Vocal band beating Boston, A Taste of Honey beating Elvis Costello, Christopher Cross beating both The Pretenders and The Go-Go's, and Milli Vanilli winning at all invalidate the award.

The trouble that some of the loquats had, I think, is that when they bloomed the bees were not around - too early. Or too late, as some loquats were still trying to bloom just a few weeks ago.

Probably La Nina related, but "seasons" in San Diego doesn't mean much, really. Some years the monsoon season will bring rain, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the fall months will bring severe Santa Ana conditions (and associate fires), and sometimes they don't. In winter the rains come - except when they don't. Horticulture here is pretty much totally dependent upon human controlled watering.

I'm not a fan of zombies. I like procedurals. My favorite shows are "Bones" "House" "NCIS Los Angeles" and this show "The finder" which is supposed to fill in for "Bones" while Emily Deschanel is on maternity leave.

I'm getting kind of bored with the "Alcatraz" show. "Time Traveling convict of the week." The cop chick somehow manages to let the bad guy grab her every freaking time! And then the fat guy has to save her.

I really want to see a police drama with a hot guy and a fat chick. There was Morgan and Garcia in "Criminal Minds" but then she lost weight.

White women would have to give birth to 13.5 percent more babies every year in order for the white population just to maintain its current size. Meanwhile, Hispanic and black fertility rates are 62 and 20 percent higher than the white rate, and ensure growing populations while the white population declines. One might well wonder about indiscriminate anti-natalist propaganda when some groups in the country are already below replacement-level fertility. The “success” of such propaganda only accelerates the decline of the white population. If crusaders against teenage motherhood were serious, they would concentrate on the black and Hispanic girls who account for more than half of teenage births. Targeting whites as part of a general campaign is yet another form of racial suicide. We should encourage whites to have children within marriage; instead they are encouraged only to use contraceptives, whether married or single.

So by the basic political and religious tenets of Americans in 1860, the existence of slavery should have been no evil, had it not been for the egalitarian phraseology of the Declaration of Independence. Intolerable abuses of the powers created by Northern interests, and reflected by the rise of the Republican Party, as detailed in Georgia's explanation of its secession:

[...]

3. Northern states' attempts to nullify fugitive slave laws, thus seeking to deprive Southerners of their property without due process of law.

[...]

Secession in 1860-61 was meant to pre-empt the usurpation of power by the federal government. Look at the manifest abuses of federal power today, and one must conclude that the South was correct in seeing "all the consequences in the principle" -- the heinous imperial principle that the states are mere "districts" or "provinces" of the central government -- and very wisely did they seek to avoid "the consequences by denying the principle."

You can natter on about slavery and racism and treason and such all you want to, but on the main point, the adherents of Leviathan were wrong and the South was right. Smaller governments, having less power, are less abusive than large governments.

Actually no, though there were insults thrown. The real reason Command Centre disabled comments for all Civil War related songs was that the comments were always basically refighting the war. So any civil war related song automatically drew in Neo-Confederates to praise it (if pro-South) or attack it (if pro-North) as well as Unionists who fought battles of words with the Neos. For the most part, the unionists were better behaved and more honest, but commentators both sides engaged in insult flinging. The Neo-Confederates did more and worse BS, but ComCen finally just got sick of it all and closed comments for such songs.

Matt Drudge is a JEW
John Podhoretz is a JEW
The people I have listed, are the one’s who are shrieking the loudest about this Mosque; and yes, they are ALL JEWS. Does that make me an Anti-Semite? No. It does not. It makes me someone, who is aware of the facts —- That the Neo-Conservative JEWS are making this damned Mosque a political issue, instead of a local issue.
I can tolerate diversity of opinion, but damned dirty pool, I will not tolerate and I will expose these idiots for what they are and that are the lying scum that they are.

Anyone who can write a song which has lyrics like this deserves awesomeness.

Look to your left, what a beautiful sight,
It's Paula, Paula Thompson, nee Paula Wright.
Look at her hair, it's still gorgeous, even now.
Flowing like the Womahonga River,
Which incidently, is to your right.
And it's the largest, in the area
In terms of volume.
Everybody, look at Paula, look at Paula Thompson
I always thought I'd marry Paula
But some things just don't work out that way
Well, that's the most important thing you'll learn on the tour today
That, and the fact there'll be a toliet break
At the information center near the manmade lake

I'll never forget the day that my family told me that my newly-married sister was in an abusive situation. They had only suspected at first, and had tried to give her a way out of the marriage, but she had gone through with the wedding. (It would be another two years of encouragement by the family and assistance from my brother and sister-in-law before she just got fed up and walked out.)

I remember how I realized I had been taking for granted that I was safe in my own home. My father would never have hit us. My husband would not hit me.

Not all women are safe in their own homes. I won't ever forget that.

Foo Fighters rocked. I loved when Grohl talked about how the album was recorded in his garage and then went on to talk about how music isn't about what a computer can do but what's in here (points at heart) and what's in here (points at head). I've been into rock since the late 60's and Foo Fighters are right up there with the great bands from any era.

And it was really nice to see Adele sing again. I was a little worried how the recovery from throat surgery was going. She wasn't 100% but it was awesome. She needs to ditch the 4 shows a week touring schedule next time. No one can sing with that much power every other day for long.

296 Dark_Falcon  Sun, Feb 12, 2012 9:04:59pm

I need to move away from music music for a moment to post something I've been meaning to mention:

A group of gun-banners called the "National Gun Victims Action Council" has called for a boycott of Starbucks on Valentine's Day, as Starbucks does not prohibit people holding a valid concealed carry permit from bringing their firearm into a Starbucks in areas where that is legal. In reply, a "Buycott" counter-plan is being promoted. The idea is to buy something from Starbucks on the 14th using $2 bills (2 for the 2nd Amendment and also because the reverse side of the bill contains a picture of the signing of the Declaration of Independence). I support the Buycott and urge my fellow lizards to join me on Tuesday in telling the gun-grabbers off!

And it was really nice to see Adele sing again. I was a little worried how the recovery from throat surgery was going. She wasn't 100% but it was awesome. She needs to ditch the 4 shows a week touring schedule next time. No one can sing with that much power every other day for long.

She has the talent to be around a long time. She doesn't need to cash in while the hype's still strong.

I don't think the 4 shows per week schedule was all her choice. I think it was her management looking to cash in as much as possible on their contract with her. The singer is the one person in the band that does best when they practice the least.

Why Starbucks instead of say McDonalds or Pinkberry? This is the part I don't quite get, why they're being singled out. In most states that issue them a legal concealed carry permit is presumed valid in such a non-alcohol serving public establishments unless the owner puts up signage specifically barring all weapons from the premises. Most chains aren't going to want to clutter up their storefronts with unnecessary signage, especially when the people supposedly carrying weapons are carrying them concealed and legally.

re: #336 palomino

Not really, though I'd expect them to respect Starbucks' decision. And at first they did ask, and Starbucks politely told them 'no'. So then they issued a demand and mounted several protests, whereupon Starbucks made clear they did not take a position on guns but simply did not consider customers exercising concealed carry in their establishments. So then the gun-banners called for the boycott. So your scenario has in fact already happened and the result was escalation by the anti-gun crowd. They're sore about losing the Heller and MacDonald cases before the Supreme Court and so are seeking to push private businesses into not allowing guns. This is not some nasty action by the right-wing: It's a nasty action by the left-wing that is drawing a non-nasty right-wing response.

OK. What's the deal. That site's almost, normal. Saw a couple of threads related to Obama (getting OBL and repealing the CC in parks) and didn't see any of the usual anti-Obama weirdness. As far as Starbucks allowing people with CC in places where CC is legal I think that's up to them. I mean, if it's legal it's not like they're doing anything unusual in their neighborhood. If they can legally decide not to allow it then that would be their option as well. It's not Starbuck's "fault" if people are allowed to enter stores with guns. That's just the way the laws are written.

SBUX has a very good reason not to want to put up signs banning guns at the entrance to all their stores, it suggests the presence of firearms and plants the idea in the mind of the customer. You walk in, see that sign and the first thing you think is, "Shit, they must have a real problem with gun crime here, why else would they feel the need to put up such a sign." re: #347 goddamnedfrank

I agree it seems arbitrary. But if you think about the demo that likely frequents Starbucks, it's probably less pro-gun than McDonalds. Also, Starbucks now covers about 10% of the earth's surface, so you don't have to travel far. I used to live in a part of LA where there were 5 Starbucks within a one mile radius.

re: #364 palomino

You may not agree with the "gun banners" concerns about open carry violence, but their actions are hardly "nasty." A one day boycott of Starbucks? Big deal. MBF fail.

It's certainly nothing like boycotting a store permanently because one of its spokespeople is a lesbian.

You can't call an MBF fail while invoking an MBF. Okay, I guess you can, but those two things are not related.

re: #362 Dark_Falcon

Thank you for that, Frank. I had not thought of that. Though that could also be part of the point for the anti-gun people: To promote "scary gun" images. Anti-gun groups have done that in the past.

My ex wife used to work at the Astor Place Starbucks in Manhattan, one the busiest if not the busiest store in the entire chain. They had a real problem with junkies shooting up in the bathroom. What they didn't do was put up a sign saying "No hypodermic needles allowed." They were just really careful about cleaning the bathrooms and educated their employees to be on the lookout for suspicious behavior.

Even when a business is dealing with a legitimate issue (and CC permit holders in stores just isn't one) often the least productive course of action from a business standpoint is to make their customers mindful of it.

I'm not a "gun banner," as DF would call them. (Where did that term come from...it sounds Limbaugh-esque.) I grew up around guns, and most of the people in my family own firearms.

I may not be a "lifelong hunter" like Mitt Romney...But I know how to shoot. Many Texans would call me a pussy because I preferred trap and skeet shooting to actually killing stuff (just don't see the sport in it, hate bullfighting too).

Anyway I don't think there's anything wrong with background checks, waiting periods, etc...doesn't seem like an unconstitutional intrusion to make getting a gun as hard as getting a drivers license.

Had a friend in middle school whose family's house had a "safari room," filled with heads and other body parts (many used creatively to make furniture) of animals they bagged in Africa. Seemed really cool at the time.

35 years later the whole thing seems kinda grotesque, as most of those species (the elephants, rhinos, lions at least) are off limits due to their endangered status.

I'm not worked up about it. I'm not going to rant or rave, I'm just going to make a counter-protest statement by buying from Starbucks on Tuesday with $2 bills. And that's all that is being proposed by me: No calls to "fight leftist oligarhy", just a call to stage an appropriate and non-confrontational counter protest.

I haven't seen a 2-dollar bill in circulation in years. Are you actually gonna go to the bank and get 2-dollar bills specifically so you can stand in solidarity with the 8 or 9 Americans who, for whatever reason, want to take a gun into a Starbucks?

It certainly doesn't rise to the level of the anti woman's rights, anti science and anti gay bigotry proudly displayed by the GOP. I just wish that the gun control advocates would realize how counter productive their shit is in the current environment and take a goddamned powder.

Actually the gun control advocates (a fair term, as opposed to "gun banners") haven't been on the mainstream news radar much over the last few years. Partly because the left in Congress isn't really all that left; and partly because the Dems cut their losses on the issue; and partly because crime rates are down so much that gun proliferation is less of a concern. And partly etc. etc.

Exactly.

Gun control was a much bigger issue a long time ago. I can't remember the last time that the elected Dems got all hopped up on gun control laws. Most of the time, I hear arguments for enforcing the laws we have instead of adding new ones.

Absolutely. And I think that sympathy for animals is a sign of human progress.

Sorry to blather on about Starbucks, but if one of your friends, let's call him Joe, came up to you and said, "Hey, man, I'm really pissed off because I can't take my gun into Starbucks," what would your response be?

Mine would be, "Dude, why the hell do you wanna take your gun into Starbucks?" What's the threat? The baristas with their piping hot coffee machines? The hyper-caffeinated soccer moms? The coffee mafia? I know it's all about the principle, but sometimes the details override the principle and we get into surreal territory.

It doesn't, unless Starbucks has a history of more violence than Peet's. Well, the logical take would be that said folk don't "lock and load" just to go to Starbucks, but do so as part of their profession or daily routine.

And in some areas, there is more danger in bringing your laptop to a coffee shop than there is in bringing your side arm.

If my tongue is burnt, I shoot it.

But in all honesty, I get DF's irritation. There might not be a need to carry a gun into a starbucks, but there also isn't much of a need for this sort of nonsense- its obviously mostly to inconvenience gun-owners. And it does seem to fly in the face of 2nd amendment issues at least a bit.

The only place I can think of offhand where I don't want guns around, concealed carry or not, is in a bar or club. Guns & alcohol don't mix, and clubs and bars are private property.

If I'm in a coffee shop, guns are the least of my worries. Usually, the pretentious hipsters talking about indie films or the two college girls loudly dissecting another girl's love life are enough.

I read (all?) most of the gun-ban posts in this thread this morning. Thought I'd do some research and answer a couple of hanging questions.

Why Starbucks? Luck of the draw. The organization is small (less than $25,000 income or assets according to their most recent form 990). They wrote to several Big Name companies that are at least superficially liberal, or which have the stereotype of mostly liberal customers. They asked all of them to ban CCW. All said no.

Why at all? a) They want gun ownership to be significantly restricted. b) Because they, or at least the named members, have all lost someone to a shooting incident and think if gun carrying is reduced there will be fewer such deaths in the future.

In both cases above, they're following the path demonstrated by MADD (Mothers against Drunk Driving), which has been somewhat successful (though not as successful as they might wish). Will it work? dunno. The main objective at this point is attention. While the counterdemonstration will probably prevent Starbucks from agreeing, it increases the organization's visibility. Either result is, at this time, a win for the National Gun Victim's (sic) Action Council.

Actually, while past versions of IE have had (and earned) the weakest link rep, I've been fairly impressed with IE8.

In addition, there are some programs your company may be using that work best (or even only) with IE8.

Finally, by insisting everyone within the company use IE8 for work, the company knows that any web-based material will show consistently for everyone and doesn't have to do the extra hours of ensuring multi-browser compatibility.

Like I said, I understand the idea of having an approved browser. And I agree that IE8 is light-years ahead of *shudder* IE6 or the marginally-improved IE7. I still don't trust it and I probably never will. Internet Explorer being a core integrated feature of the Windows operating system is just asking for trouble.

The "co-location" rule is being eliminated, and some battalion level positions in direct combat ground units (in already authorized specialties) are being authorized.

The first only affects enlisted Army personnel. The latter affects enlisted and officers in the army, navy, and marine corps.

It's a conspiracy, I tells you. Through Soros-controlled banking fronts, SEIU has secretly invested its retirement and political slush funds in companies that make and import scary black guns. On cue, their patron, Obama, has only to mumble a few words about "assault weapons ban" and there is a huge consumer run on the guns and their various accessories. Sales, prices, and stock values skyrocket, at which point SEIU cashes out and pays Soros his commission, with plenty left over for Obama's re-election. I saw videos this morning in the news of Greece. What a mess.

Greeks clean up after 45 buildings burnt

Firefighters have been dousing smouldering buildings and clean-up crews are sweeping rubble from the streets of central Athens after a night of rioting.

At least 45 buildings were burnt on Sunday night, including one of the capital's oldest restored cinemas. Dozens of stores and cafes were smashed and looted.

The rioting began on Sunday afternoon, ahead of a historic vote in parliament on yet more austerity measures. MPs approved the bill by 199 votes to 74, to the relief of investors who pushed the Athens stock index up 5 per cent on Monday.

The stench of tear gas still hung in the air on Monday morning, choking passers-by. More than 120 people were hurt in the rioting, which also broke out in other Greek cities.

Authorities said 68 police needed medical care after being injured by petrol bombs, rocks and other objects hurled at them. At least 70 protesters were hospitalised.

Police arrested at least 67 people. In several cases they had to escort fire crews to burning buildings after protesters prevented access.

The attacks coincide with the 4th anniversary of the death of Hizbullah leader Imad Mughniyeh (in a bombing that is invariably linked to Israel). So, it isn't a stretch to think that this was the work of Iran, or Hizbullah, or a proxy working on their behalf.

It's a way to show Israel that they're not beyond using any and all tactics to go after Israelis abroad.

It's also not the first terror attack against Israelis/Jews in India; the Mumbai attacks included an element that specifically targeted Jews at the Chabad House.

Still, the Israelis diplomatic corps have been alerted to the possibility of attacks coinciding with the Mughniyeh anniversary, which is probably why the attack was thwarted in Georgia. More here.

Remote control could have been used to trigger car blast: police

Gupta said the woman from Israeli Embassy, who sustained injuries in the blast, was stable.
...
"Talyesshoba (42), the wife of Israeli Defence Attache, was on her way to pick up her two children from American Embassy school when the incident took place," he said.

According to the version provided by one of the eye-witnesses who was injured, Gupta said a motorcyclist stuck something on the rear of the the car and after that there was fire in the car.

The target of the attack was a diplomat's wife on the way to pick up her children. Hardly the moral equivalent of a scientist working on a nuclear weapon.

Some. And some of it is monstrous unemployment that's perceived as and possibly is being further increased by demands of foreign controllers.

I've seen some back-of-the-envelope analyses that compare what's happening in Greece (and to a lesser extent all the eurozone peripherals) to the effects of the Treaty of Versailles on Germany. Not sure if that'll stand to a full analysis, but there's enough similarity to make it worth me taking time to look.

re: #583 kirkspencer

The messages may be the same (stop doing what you're doing), but the choice of targets is different. In the case of those targeting Iranian scientists and officials, the targets are chosen to stop Iran's nuclear program. In the case of today's attacks against Israeli diplomats, the targets were chosen because they're Israeli diplomats.

Now, everyone believes that Israel is behind the attacks on Iran's nuclear scientists, Imad Mugniyeh, and even the Stuxnet attacks against Iran's nuclear enrichment program, but there's no actual proof of that. There's just lots of circumstantial evidence pointing in that direction. Israel has an interest in seeing the nuclear program halted and Hizbullah terror masters killed, but they're not the only ones. The US and Saudis also have interests in seeing the nuclear program slowed.

Israel for its part is blaming Iran for the attacks on its diplomats, and that's probably the strongest indication that they were behind the other attacks - they recognize the tit-for-tat nature of the ongoing conflict against Israel and Israel's efforts to maintain its security. Expect to see more tit-for-tat attacks along these lines. Not enough to rise to the level of open warfare, but just enough to keep markets roiled and people on their toes.

Iran preparing 'suicide boats' in case of Strait of Hormuz conflict, U.S. official says

Iran has built up its naval forces in the Gulf and prepared boats that could be used in suicide attacks, but the U.S. Navy can prevent it from blocking the Strait of Hormuz, the commander of U.S. naval forces in the region said on Sunday.

Iran has made a series of threats in recent weeks to disrupt shipping in the Gulf or strike U.S. forces in retaliation if its oil trade is shut down by sanctions, or if its disputed nuclear program comes under attack.

"They have increased the number of submarines ... they increased the number of fast attack craft," Vice Admiral Mark Fox told reporters. "Some of the small boats have been outfitted with a large warhead that could be used as a suicide explosive device. The Iranians have a large mine inventory."

Interesting the way you worded that. It reminded me of Marcotte's post this morning...

While Romney basically can't lose, barring some kind of weird delegate wrangling that I suppose is always possible but seems unlikely, the knocks he's taking are leaving him in poor fighting condition to take on the general election against Obama. A huge part of the problem is that Romney is just a shitty candidate, something that got forgotten when he was looking good next to the slate of cranks and kooks that challenged him in the primary. But I think a larger part of the problem is that hating Romney has become a stand-in for conservative self-loathing and the current right wing mania for purity.

That was one of those comments that made me go "Hmmm." There's a lot packed into that bolded sentence.

Dem lawmaker: Obama budget is a 'nervous breakdown on paper'

Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) expressed concern President Obama's budget would go too far to rein in government spending in the midst of an economic recovery, calling the forthcoming proposal a 'nervous breakdown on paper.'

"This budget is a nervous breakdown on paper," said Cleaver during an interview on CNN's Starting Point Monday morning. "We're still in a recession, we're still struggling. Unemployment is still too high," he said.

Dem lawmaker: Obama budget is a 'nervous breakdown on paper'

Zzzzzzz.

During the course of the Democratic Presidential Primary, Cleaver endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton.[2] Cleaver claimed that African American superdelegates who supported Clinton were subjected to harassment, threatened with primary opponents and called “Uncle Tom.” He said they were told, “You’re not black if you’re not supporting Barack Obama. … It's ugly.”[3] On March 30, 2008, he was interviewed on The Sunday Edition on CBC Radio and said he realized he was on the losing team: "Even though I don't expect the Kansas City Chiefs to beat the Indianapolis Colts, I cheer for the Kansas City Chiefs." [4] According to BlackMissouri.com.,[5] U.S. Representative Jesse Jackson Jr. of Illinois asked Cleaver, “If it comes down to the last day and you’re the only superdelegate? … Do you want to go down in history as the one to prevent a black from winning the White House?" “I told him I’d think about it," Cleaver explained. Cleaver said during the course of the primary he'd be shocked if Obama wasn't the next President but made it clear he still supported Clinton until she suspended her bid.

One bill, HB825 from Republican Del. Bob Marshall of Prince William County, would have prohibited judges and state administrators from using any legal code established outside the United States to make decisions. It was one of two proposals this year to address that issue.

Muslim advocates condemned the effort, calling it a thinly veiled attack on Shariah law, their religious tenets. Members of other religious communities joined in, including the Jewish Community Federation, saying the ban also would infringe on their rights, especially to settle certain family matters, such as wills and divorces, according to their faith.

Nonetheless, the House Courts of Justice Committee approved the bill 10-6 and sent it to the full House for consideration.

But when legislators started hearing from business groups concerned about how the proposal could affect their dealings abroad and foreign companies located here, they sent the bill back to committee.

A budget is a compromise document to start with, and heading into an election year, it's a compromised document too. Not all that surprising that those on the left are finding things to complain about. Just as surely, the GOP will complain that it doesn't go far enough. The budget attempts to do lots of things for lots of groups, but as this Rep. shows, he's not going to please everyone.

The tax portion, which includes tax cuts for corporations and a hike on millionaires will be spun into incomprehensibility.

Yet, there's lots of good stuff in there if you're concerned about infrastructure improvement and jobs:

JUMPSTART JOB CREATION

More than $350 billion in short-term measures for job growth starting in 2012, including many planks of the American Jobs Act that we continue to call on Congress to enact plus some new job creation initiatives. They include:
Extension of the payroll tax cut and unemployment insurance benefits for rest of 2012.

An upfront investment of $50 billion from the surface transportation reauthorization bill for roads, rails, and runways to create thousands of quality jobs in the short term.

Continuing to allow businesses to write-off the full amount of new investments.

$30 billion to modernize at least 35,000 schools and $30 billion to help states and localities retain and hire teachers and first responders.

Project Rebuild, a series of policies to help connect Americans looking for work in distressed communities with the work needed to re-purpose residential and commercial properties, creating jobs and stabilizing neighborhoods.

A new tax credit for this year focused on small businesses and that gives businesses that add jobs and wages a tax cut equal to 10 percent of wages added up to $500,000.

Investing in transportation is key, and I can think of at least a dozen projects in the NYC metro area that could use the funding (though that $50 billion could be sunk into one or two projects in NYC alone - such as a fully funded full-route 2d Avenue Subway to Hanover Square plus the Gateway Hudson Tunnel and/or 7 Line Extension to Secaucus). $50 billion could also repair/replace hundreds of deficient bridges across the country, improve rail corridors, and improve air traffic systems as well.

The tax credits add complexity, but would help small businesses if they have to show that they're keeping those workers employed.

I have my doubt about the school construction program. If that finds the light of day in the actual budget, I'd be surprised, but if the NJ example is any indication, the money will end up helping only a fraction of the schools that it claims to be able to help with the $30 billion.

Back in the early 2000s, New Jersey's School Construction Corporation (SCC) was supposed to upgrade, revamp, and build new schools around the state. The initial estimates for work done turned out to be a fraction of what the actual costs would be, so the number of schools were scaled back and yet the prices continued ballooning. In total, only a fraction of the schools that needed work got work done, and the SCC had to be replaced with another entity because of corruption and an inability to control costs. I fear the same thing on the national scale.

New York - The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said Monday that the onslaught in Syria has continued with the complicity of government authorities 'at the highest level.'

Navi Pillay told a special session of the UN General Assembly in New York that crimes against humanity have been committed over the past 11 months of unrest. She said her office in Geneva had stopped counting the dead because of lack of access to Syria.

Pillay said more than 5,400 people had been killed by December and more than 10,000 people have been injured while an estimated 18,000 people have been detained.

Basset Hound Gets Texas High-School Diploma

What has your dog done lately? Sleep, eat and, if you’re lucky, bring you your slippers? Well, Molly the Basset Hound just earned her high-school diploma. Not obedience school, but an actual high-school diploma. It’s enough to make your shih tzu roll over and play dead.

But before your pup winds up in the doghouse, Houston’s KHOU.com reports that while the feat remains impressive, the Texas pup earned her credentials through a so-called diploma mill. A Texas law that prevents discrimination against home-schooled students is allegedly being used to make a quick buck on the backs of students looking for a shortcut to a diploma. For a few hundred dollars and the answers to some simple online questions, these predominantly online institutions bill themselves as private schools and issue a high-school diploma to seemingly anyone willing to pay. To test the limits of this, the investigative team at KHOU signed up their photographer’s dog, Molly.

The Arab Spring has just begun. Give it time. Don't listen to the naysayers that want to see a return to business as usual.

I still have hope but I wouldn't want to be in either Libya or Egypt right now.

Honestly I always thought there was a good chance these would end badly but throwing out their dictators was/is an important first step. When/If they have to do it again they'll remember what it took.

I for one do not believe we can foresee where all of this is heading, no matter how brilliant our analyses. Human societies have an element of chaos and sometimes the strangest things happen.

Our own society, as stable and relatively peaceful that it seems, only became that way after centuries of sectarian and nationalist European warfare, followed by a couple of centuries of colonialism which was brutal at times, followed by a revolutionary and then civil war (which set a benchmark for advanced technological brutality up to that time in history.)

Santorum's net favorability: +44. Romney's? +10. Gingrich is -9 and Paul is -19.

Man Convicted for Presidential Assassination Plot

An Uzbek man pleaded guilty on Friday for plotting to kill President Barack Obama, according a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Northern Alabama.

Ulugbek Kodirov, who was illegally living in Birmingham, Ala., admitted guilty on weapons and terrorist charges in the assassination plot, the statement reads.

Court evidence showed that Kodirov believed he was in a plot to kill the president for an Islamist militant group based in Uzbekistan, a landlocked Central Asian county, the statement says. He faces as many as 30 years in prison and a $750,000 fine after pleading guilty.

“Kodirov was apprehended during an undercover operation in which he was attempting to obtain weapons and explosives,” U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance stated, adding that Muslim community members in Birmingham were “instrumental in helping law enforcement shut down this threat.”

Kodirov was arrested in July at a motel in Alabama after he obtained an automatic machine gun and four hand grenades from an undercover FBI agent.

Themselves. Romney is an obvious fake (that "severe conservative" line at CPAC went over like a lead balloon), but Santorum really believes AGW is a marxist plot, gays are evil and the Flintstones is a documentary. Romney just can't fake sincerity, while Santorum is sincere.

I'm having a really hard time buying that poll. PPP points out the dem/ind voters (who are allowed to vote in the repub primary)prefer santorum by a huge margin which inflates the santorum number but not by much.

I don't live in MI but I spend a lot of time there. I've seen Romney signs all over the western half of the state for 6 months now.

I saw this story in a few places yesterday. If you haven't read it by now....:

Me, APD, and 'Babysitting While White,' Part Deux
[Link: gritsforbreakfast.blogspot.com...]

A few years back Grits posed the question, "Is babysitting while white reasonable suspicion for police questioning?" after my granddaughter and I were detained and questioned at length in my neighborhood on suspicion of some nefarious deed (it was never quite clear what). In that incident, the police were pretty clear I was stopped solely because Ty, like her mother (who came to live with my wife and me when she was a child) is black, while I'm an almost stereotypical looking white Texas redneck. At the time, Grits was amazed that three squad cars were dispatched to question me for walking down the street with a child of a different race, detaining me for no good reason and scaring the bejeezus out of then-two-year old Ty.

Haniyeh: No compromise, only armed resistance

Only arms and no compromise should be used in dealing with the "Zionist regime, the Iranian news agency ISNA quoted Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh as saying Monday.

The "Gun is our only response to Zionist regime [sic]. In time, we have come to understand that we can obtain our goals only through fighting and armed resistance and no compromise should be made with the enemy," Haniyeh said.

The "Path of resistance continues and if we make any compromise, it is for resistance and obtaining Palestinians' rights," he continued.

Judicial benches in Texas left sitting empty

A Republican effort to stall President Barack Obama's judicial nominees in the Senate as a protest to the recess appointment of a consumer watchdog has left Texas with five vacancies on federal benches.

That could grow to as many as seven vacancies by the end of the year, with pending retirements. That's more than any other state except New York.

Senate Democrats and liberal groups are putting pressure on the state's two Republican U.S. senators, Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn to break with the Republican opposition and push for a vote on two Texas judicial nominees waiting confirmation.

re: #726 RogueOne

Absurd.

White couples adopting/acquiring/collecting Black children while white is so common these days, it's a cliché. Not so for the color-reverse. If there were some kind of history of states, governments, and other institutions targeting whites as innately criminal, the point would make sense, but it doesn't.

I saw this story in 4 different places yesterday and someone in one of the threads posted this story:

It's about 10 minutes long but it's a really interesting story from Richard Price who happened to be on a ride-a-long with the police when they pull a guy over for the same thing, not being the same color as the kid.
