Fox’s Liz Trotta on Rape in Military: ‘What Did They Expect?’

They wouldn’t have this problem if they stayed in the kitchen
Media • Views: 35,675

Our Fox News right wing jaw-dropper of the day comes from Fox contributor Liz Trotta, in a segment about the Pentagon’s new rules for women in the military: Fox’s Liz Trotta on Sexual Assault in Military: ‘What Did They Expect? These People Are in Close Contact.’

Fox News contributor Liz Trotta attacked the Department of Defense for increasing spending on support programs for victims of sexual assault. Trotta also reacted to a Pentagon report showing a 64% increase in violent sexual assaults since 2006 by stating: “Well, what did they expect? These people are in close contact.”

Trotta began by claiming “we have women once more, the feminist, going, wanting to be warriors and victims at the same time” and later added that feminists “have also directed them, really, to spend a lot of money. They have sexual counselors all over the place, victims’ advocates, sexual response coordinators. … you have this whole bureaucracy upon bureaucracy being built up with all kinds of levels of people to support women in the military who are now being raped too much.”

Because, you know, the women soldiers were asking for it. By being female.

Un-fucking-believable.

2 Kragar  Mon, Feb 13, 2012 1:55:35pm

So according to the Right Wing, our soldiers are supposed to pose with Nazi symbols, piss on corpses, and rape their fellow female service members.

But they support the troops.

This attitude reminds me of one heard from an Imam in Saudi some time ago regarding sex and alcohol.

Men should not drink alcohol because if they do they might not know the difference between their wives and their daughters.

4 darthstar  Mon, Feb 13, 2012 1:57:00pm

That's in line with what Rick Santorum said the other day about women serving in the military being a 'distraction'...though he re-phrased himself quickly to say that the chivalrous men would be distracted from trying to protect the frail women all the time.

What a hack.

6 renata39.5  Mon, Feb 13, 2012 1:57:42pm

A) Close contact is now an excuse for rape among these types? What on earth.

B) "being raped too much" I'm sorry, is there an acceptable amount of rape and then too much rape? Ass.

7 darthstar  Mon, Feb 13, 2012 1:59:08pm

These assholes at Fox say 'feminist' like it's a bad thing.

8 jaunte  Mon, Feb 13, 2012 1:59:26pm
SHAWN: Well, you certainly want the people fighting the war to be protected from anything that could be illegal.

TROTTA: Oh, look, I mean, that's -- nice try Eric. This whole question of women in the military has not been aired properly, and it's the great sleeping giant.

So there she is with the opportunity to air a real policy objection, but never quite gets to it.

9 mikec6666  Mon, Feb 13, 2012 1:59:52pm

By her logic they should do away with military police altogether. This is bad logic, bad public policy, and a badly thought out presentation.

Close contact apparently exists only in the military and not in colleges, businesses, churches, or any other location on Earth.

Oh hey, it's victim blaming. How original (Look what she was wearing) and entirely unexpected (She came on to me)! I mean, you never (She didn't really mean it when she said no) ever see this happen (She shouldn't have been there to start with) with women (She should have known that guy was trouble)! I'm shocked (What else can you expect from men?)!

I don't know whether to laugh or what...according to the latest polls by Pew and Gallup, Frothy and Corporations are people my friend are now tied in the national poll. It just stops being funny after a while when you realize there is still, lets say, a 25% chance (pending on the world economy) these people could have their fingers on the red button.

What we need is legislature defining what the legally sanctioned raping times are, and they need to be posted where the public can see them and take note.

Hmmm. So to believe this crap one would have to figure that the military can train troops to do or not do any number of things. Stay effective under fire. Run the newest equipment. Fire the latest weapons. Discern insurgents from the innocent.

But sexual restraint of the most basic kind for your fellow female soldier is out of the question? LOL. Is this why gays were not allowed? For fear they wold rape fellow soldiers?

What planet are these people really from? I think I now have proof of alien visitation but no alien intelligence present.

Good news!
Israeli wounded in attack near embassy in New Delhi released from hospital

Tali Yehoshua-Koren, the wife of an Israeli diplomat was moderately wounded on Monday when a car bomb exploded outside of Israel's embassy in New Delhi, was dismissed from the hospital after undergoing surgery.

Her family members in Israel have spoken to her husband who said she is recovering, and most of the shrapnel has been removed from her body. In the next 48 hours, a medical team will decide her condition and whether or not she will be able to return to Israel.

The Delhi bomb failed to kill anyone and the Georgian bomb failed to detonate.

LaBarbera and Wooden Reminisce about when Violence against the LGBT Community was 'Normal'

Wooden: My heart breaks and I literally mourn over what has happened to the NAACP. Ben Jealous says he has a brother who is transgendered in his family, the little boy grew up dressing like Diana Ross or somebody when he was a child, well I say his parents should’ve took the child and whooped the child’s behind and taught the child how to dress.

Wooden: If you want to get knocked out just go into a male bathroom in the African American community or any community I would think and you’re standing there in a dress and many times the people are trying to hit on people, trying to make sexual responses, one man there, you know, you don’t want to be in there feeling like another man is trying to look at your penis. We’ve always had a hostile response, or a disrespect if you will, for that kind of behavior.

LaBarbera: It used to be common of course, I’ve heard many stories. I remember a story from a military guy, saying a guy came and he was a sailor and they had some temporary little day off at port and some guy hit on him and he decked him.

Wooden: That’s normal.

LaBarbera: When you make a sexual advance against a man on man, that is a normal response, and yet I fear in the rise of political correctness what’s going to happen is, somebody is going to find out that there was a man in his wife’s—his wife was in the restroom when a transgendered man, a biological male, was in the female restroom and he’s gonna punch him, but then the man who punches him is gonna be charged with a hate crime, that’s what I’m afraid of.

Wooden: We’re not promoting, advocating violence here.

LaBarbera: Of course not!

Cashing in.

Nowhere in her [Vietnam] reminiscences does she suggest that her presence distracted male soldiers, made them feel overprotective of her, or tempted them into raping her. So either her opinion of military men and women has dropped like a stone since Vietnam, or she's just plain making stuff up.

But why would she do that? There's another clue in her Vietnam memories. Complaining about coverage of the war by less hawkish journalists, she told CSPAN, "The anti-war opinion was a theatrical opinion. It was an opinion that got you on the air and into the newspapers." Perhaps Trotta's struck upon a lucrative theatrical monologue of her own, and she performs it to great effect for Fox.[Link: motherjones.com...]

Oh, you know how it works. Once those that are oppressed start getting access to some of the trappings of privilege, many of them are willing to toss those that are more oppressed under the bus in order to integrate themselves into the same oppressive power structure that had (And often still does) put them down.

I had to check out her age because I was convinced she was a young person. Em... no. She was born in 1937. However, her wiki led me to an article in which she joked about assassinating Obama in 2008. Oh what a funny gal she is!

[Link: thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com...]

Discussing Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s reference last week to the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy during the 1968 primary season, the Fox analyst, Liz Trotta, said Sunday that “now we have what some are reading as a suggestion that somebody knock off Osama, um, Obama — well, both, if we could.

So age has nothing to do with the fact that she's just a moron.

A female soldier in the US army is more likely to be raped by fellow soldiers than suffer an injury from enemy attack. One of the many reasons I do not endorse blind hero-worship of the US military (or any army).

38 What, me worry?  Mon, Feb 13, 2012 2:35:47pm

39 Targetpractice  Mon, Feb 13, 2012 2:35:55pm

So we shouldn't have Muslims in the military (might be traitors!), can't have gays in the military (might be oversexed!), and now we can't have women in the military (might get raped!). At this point, I'm shocked they haven't tried to make a case for resegregating the services...yet.

Virginia House passes ‘personhood’ bill

The bill was introduced by Del. Bob Marshall (R-Prince William), one of the most outspoken legislators on abortion issues and a candidate for U.S. Senate this year.

Similar legislation passed the House last year, but died in the Senate, which was controlled by Democrats. Supporters hope that the Senate, now led by the GOP, will approve the bill this year, but its fate is still unclear.

Marshall said his bill, modeled after legislation in Missouri, would not affect birth control, miscarriages or abortions but would affect the way that courts define a person. For example, parents could receive damages for the death of a fetus in a wrongful death lawsuit.

“To claim using birth control will get you in trouble with this statue is simply false,’’ Marshall said. “It does not have the affect of criminalizing birth control. This does not directly effect abortion.’’

Critics disagree.

“This bill requires every single code section in Virginia that uses the word ‘person’ to apply to a fetus,” Del. Jennifer McClellan (D-Richmond) said. “That opens families and doctors to a wide variety of criminal and civil lawsuits for health-care decisions not only in cases of unwanted pregnancies, but every pregnancy and even miscarriage.”

The House rejected a floor amendment by Del. Vivian Watts (D-Fairfax) that would have ensured that contraception would remain legal.

I've always found the right wing's assumptions about our troops disconcerting. Apparently 'support our troops' means assuming there all pathological sexual predators, and sending them in to wars of choice to die for no real reason.
And the right wing claim the military as theirs?
Those in the military who vote republican, of course, remind me of anyone who isn't a selfish billionaire who votes for them - and against their own interests. Difference is, of course, the likelihood of dying for some senator's ego is much higher when you're in the military.

During last week’s Q&BA live video chat session on Google+, I got the question, "Why spend money on NASA when we need that money here on Earth?"
This is a common question, and very apropos given the terrible budget news we got about NASA earlier today. So I put my answer up on YouTube. We’ll be hearing this argument a lot in the upcoming budget battles, and hopefully this’ll help show why we need to spend money on NASA, even more than we are now.

I have a lot of blog posts dealing with this issue, since it comes up so often. You’ll find all them linked in this blog post: Debating Space. We need to be exploring space, and we need to be investing in our future. Science and exploration are our future.

Romney Thinks Mandatory Drug Testing For Welfare Recipients Is ‘An Excellent Idea’

Here's another bit of GOP brilliance -- forcing people on unemployment and who are looking for a job to work for free to keep their benefits:

Senate Republicans Would Require The Unemployed To Volunteer

Republicans in the U.S. Senate want the long-term unemployed to volunteer for 20 hours a week in order to receive unemployment insurance.

A bill introduced Thursday by Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) would also require claimants drawing benefits six months or longer to search for work at least 20 hours a week.

"Engagement in volunteer service will encourage unemployed workers to maintain job skills, marketability, and a sense of self-worth while providing for the betterment of their communities," Burr said in a statement. "Even more, the active job search requirement will enhance the integrity of the unemployment system and its ability to identify and serve those most in need."

Because really, how hard could it be to look for a job when you're spending half your available working hours doing mandatory "volunteer" work?

Severe Conservative Syndrome

How did American conservatism end up so detached from, indeed at odds with, facts and rationality? For it was not always thus. After all, that health reform Mr. Romney wants us to forget followed a blueprint originally laid out at the Heritage Foundation!

My short answer is that the long-running con game of economic conservatives and the wealthy supporters they serve finally went bad. For decades the G.O.P. has won elections by appealing to social and racial divisions, only to turn after each victory to deregulation and tax cuts for the wealthy — a process that reached its epitome when George W. Bush won re-election by posing as America’s defender against gay married terrorists, then announced that he had a mandate to privatize Social Security.

Over time, however, this strategy created a base that really believed in all the hokum — and now the party elite has lost control.

The point is that today’s dismal G.O.P. field — is there anyone who doesn’t consider it dismal? — is no accident. Economic conservatives played a cynical game, and now they’re facing the blowback, a party that suffers from “severe” conservatism in the worst way. And the malady may take many years to cure.

Corvée sounds nicer, but is also more accurate:

...corvée differs from chattel slavery in that the worker is not owned outright – being free in various respects other than in the dispensation of his or her labour – and the work is usually intermittent; typically only a certain number of days' or months' work is required each year. It is a form of unfree labour where the worker is not, or not fully, compensated.

148 Gus  Mon, Feb 13, 2012 3:44:03pm

See, it's not really about abortion and contraception. At least not too much. All of that is to get the American yokels to vote for Republicans. That's the red meat that gets them to vote for these candidates. If you shroud AGW in the Bible for example you're speaking to the right wing masses. That of course serves the purpose of the petroleum industry once they're elected into power. The CEO of Exxon, for example, isn't thinking about the Bible when contemplating his opposition to AGW.

Well, that's at least part of it. The other half is ignorance that both the educated and uneducated Republicans actually believe in. Sometimes they even force themselves to accepts or reject things due to peer pressure. This will likely be the case with Tortta's comments at Fox News. Her having said this on Fox News and our objection combines to a Skinnerian* response in their mind. "If they hate it! We like it." Even if it's something they really despise themselves.

Romney Thinks Mandatory Drug Testing For Welfare Recipients Is ‘An Excellent Idea’

Money quote:

The ACLU of Florida has estimated that the state saved just over $40,000 between July and October by denying residents welfare support based on their failure to pass a drug test, while it spent more than $245,000 in reimbursements for the cost of the exam in the same time period.

And recall that Gov Skeletor--actually, now his wife--owns one of the major firms that does that testing.

When we do peanut or candy break-bulk repackaging at the food bank, spillage is free-range browse. That'll hold them.

Israel embassy car blast: Indian intelligence hints at Iran's hand

Sources also said Israel had recently confided in Indians their fears of Israeli targets coming under attack from Iranian sympathizers. Sources in Delhi Police did not rule out the possibility of Iranian sympathizers enlisting the modules of Lashkar, who despite their loathing of Shias, are unremitting in their animosity towards Israel.

Lashkar-e-Taiba is essentially a terrorist branch of Pakistan's intelligence agency.

Not that they'd actually grok the reference, but I suspect that the right-fringe that see poverty as a moral failing fantasize about something akin to the Lacadaemonian helot system...though they'd implicitly assume themselves to be Spartans, not Messinians.

They wouldn't be down for Egyptian-style corvee--which was like a giant public works program in the agricultural off season--or the suspiciously communalist Andean shared labor system.

Here's another bit of GOP brilliance -- forcing people on unemployment and who are looking for a job to work for free to keep their benefits:

Senate Republicans Would Require The Unemployed To Volunteer

I can see the problem with that, but I would really, really, love to teach a couple unemployed hedge fund managers how we shingle a Habitat house. In Alabama. In August.

But that's not who you'd get, which removes even that little bit of benefit.

Instead... Hey, why should I start hiring when I can get xx employees for [unemployment] wages?

Here in Georgia, max unemployment is your gross weekly OR $330 per week. (yes, if you were earning more than $8.25 per week unemployment will be less.) Let's see. Minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. 7.5% for social security and medicare, 6% for FUTA, is 13.5%, all for $8.19.

So if my employees get minimum wage I should just hire them. If I have to pay anything more than that I can be all noble and gove these "volunteers" an opportunity.

See Realclearpolitics.com

I can see 2 things the Republicans have (possibly) going for them:

(1) As you mention, the fragility of the economy. E.g. it wouldn't take much Middle East "turmoil" to send the price of gasoline way up in the US. If the recovery doesn't continue in 2012, Obama will, unfortunately, get a lot of the blame. (No wonder the Rpeublicans are in no hurry to extend the Social Security tax cut past February 29.)

(2) One other point: there *may* be an "enthusiasm gap". I hope I'm wrong about this. But I sometimes read about how people who were super-excited about Obama in 2008 still like the guy, but aren't super-enthusiastic like they used to be. Here's what scares me: the Republicans may be counting on their extreme rhetoric to really bring out "their" voters in droves. Even if only 30% of the population think Obama is an evil foreign sekrit atheist Muslim, if the voter turnout for those 30% is very high, it could make the difference.

The Republicans may see voter turnout of specific voting blocs as the only way they can win. This *may* explain why their statements are so extreme, so often.

On the other hand, maybe they really believe what they're saying?

As someone who has leaped from academia to being a small businessman...and now back in school for an MBA...I never ceased to amazed by the how the people that talk about "run government like a business" invariably make decisions utterly counter-intuitive to the fiscal discipline that makes a business work, and make their decisions without research or analysis as to cost/benefit.

Weirdly enough, I'm not so sure. Oh, I think they'd try, and for a couple of years they'd succeed.

The inflection point is 2014. The biggest explosion then is health care. It's not the only one, but it is huge.

In 2014, assuming we neither increase nor decrease our current distribution of wealth, roughly 15% of american citizens, presently without healthcare, will get medicaid. Another 30% of american citizens, also presently without healthcare, will be offered healthcare that is (barely) affordable. Not COBRA (which wanted 95% of my unemployment check), but affordable health care that has a number of mandatory basic services.

Another 30% of american citizens will see their health insurance bill decrease. Actually, a lot of them are seeing those declines already because of the 80/20 rule (which insurance companies are challenging).

In 2014, Democrats are going to be able to say, "we did this, and Republicans want to take it away from you."

Back when the bugaboo was Hillarycare, the estimate was that a successful national health care program from the democrats would push the R/D divide 5 points to the D side. With the neck and neck races of the past few years you can see why 5 points is such a big deal.

It starts in 2014.

I find this sort of interesting that Santorum is defending the Crusades. Especially given that one of the arguments tossed out when atrocities among groups gets compared is that the West has outgrown those committed in the past while the East (or where ever) has not yet done so. So Rick is saying that when you're defesnding the Right (e.g. Christianity) you get to define your own rules since God is on your side.

Which of course is what *every* group of religious fanatics say. That the god(s) are on their side and everything is fair game in their honor.

Oh, nice. Santorum defended the Crusades, against the "American left who hates Christendom.” The Crusades included lots of genocide against the Jews, and I like to point that out for the historically ignorant who wonder why Jews are antsy about hyper-religiosity in Christians. Does that mean I hate Christendom? What is the 'dom' in Christendom, anyway?

Perignon.

Good question. Christian dominion I assume. I have heard this dominion word elsewhere. Dominionist perhaps?

Definition: Perfect control in right of ownership. The word implies both title and possession and appears to require a complete retention of control over disposition. Title to an article of property, which arises from the power of disposition and the right of claiming it. Sovereignty; as in the dominion of the seas or over a territory.

Yeah. I was wondering if the Howler might in fact be too advanced to represent a Santorum-Republican.

@EricBoehlert
i.e. why Fox hates it when news breaks out:

CNN’s Whitney Houston Coverage Rewarded in Ratings

CNN stepped up on Saturday night to cover the death of Whitney Houston wall to wall in prime time — and it paid off with one of the strongest recent nights in the ratings for the cable channel.

CNN dominated the competition that night, as word of Ms. Houston’s death was breaking, attracting two and three times the audiences of its rival news channels.

For the full duration of coverage, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., CNN averaged 2.17 million viewers, well ahead of the usually dominant Fox News, which averaged 1.34 million total viewers, and MSNBC, which trailed far behind with only 652,000 viewers.

Heh. And that's one of the ones that essentially disappeared from TV in the early 80s or so. Too violent, and especially the Russian Roulette reference at the end.

(I also noted two TR references there as well. One very obvious, the other less so.)

I was originally kind of excited about the premise but the trailer leaves me pretty flat. It doesn't look like they're going to do anything interesting with a very interesting idea. They should have given the project to Tim Burton or Quinton Tarrantino.

Charles..I am deeply disappointed.. I don't even know how to address this.
I have been accused multiple times of going to RW web sites and dumping racist comments by the stalkers. I have never nor would ever engage in anything so despicable.. Of course they have no proof and none exists in this Universe.. Yet they smear me to perhaps get to you? I dunno..It hurts me deeply..So I need to stop looking over there for my amusement, It stopped being funny any more...
I'd like to ask you a few questions Charles.. Did I not send you a documentation of me being the Republican of the year years ago? Did I not get invited to the Bush White House? Wasn't I a good GOP guy years ago?
Have I ever not been honest about my politics and how I have changed my views (esp. Cause of my dad).
I now know you feel about being smeared and lied about...
I guess they thought if they floated enough Lies about me I'd stop blogging..Nope...not going to happen..I have nothing more to say about that lying trash..

Tim Burton is the executive producer of the movie.

Try not to let it get to you. It really doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things. Stay true to yourself and that's what really matters.

re: #246 Lidane

Tim Burton is the executive producer of the movie.

It doesn't look like he had enough influence. The trailer looks and feels like any other comic book/super hero/action movie out there. No distinctive look and nothing in the trailer indicates they've attached an interesting story to it.

re: #245 The Hoopster

Today someone on Twitter posted a perceptive comment about this: when stalkers can't get to their main object of obsession (in this case, me) they focus on and go after anyone associated with that person.

Killgore's advice is right on target. The best way to handle it is to utterly ignore it, and keep on keepin' on. Do what you know is right.

My Blackberry was retired today and I get to break in an Iphone 4 now."

If you use your iPhone to read Little Green Footballs, I'm afraid you're going to find that it will be a frustrating experience. Having used various iPhones for 4 years - Knowing that iPhones don't run flash has not been a problem for me, even during a couple of years of perusing Little Green Footballs.

Recently, for some reason, I've found using an iPhone 4S to scroll through the thread comments incurs a lot of lag.

Scrolling through the various threads is the same as before with *no* lag, but *after* the selected thread comments load, it's lag city.

Knowing full well that all smartphones, Android, Blackberry, iPhone & Win 7, all suck in their own way, if that's the way it is, so be it.

You know, I was raised to respect our servicemen.

But that was before the people at Fox told me that they were raping and pillaging barbarians, and that's the way it's sposed to be!

My dad said they were brave people who protected our country and had special rules they lived by that were tougher than the rules for regular people.

WHO AM I SUPPOSED TO BELIEVE, FOLKS???
