Monday Night Insanity Break: Jonathan Coulton (Featuring Sara Quin) - ‘Still Alive’

Youtube Video

This music video I edited for the song “Still Alive” by Jonathan Coulton (from his 2011 album, “Artificial Heart”) using public domain films found on archive.org. I wanted to avoid making any overt references to the game Portal, or to recreate the video game for this music video (since there are already plenty of those videos to be found online, anyway).

The public domain films used in this video are “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die,” “The House On Haunted Hill,” and “Pillsbury Cake Mix Commercial.”

UPDATE at 2/13/12 5:57:12 pm

Jonathan Coulton is the creator of “Code Monkey,” linked at LGF in 2007 in an open thread when I was working furiously on converting our database from a home-brewed flat file system to MySQL: Saturday Open Thread.

NJ State Senate has passed its version of the gay marriage legislation 24-16. It's a big increase since the issue came up 2 years ago, but it's still three votes short of a veto-proof tally should Gov. Christie carry through on his threat to veto the bill. While Christie has sought to get the issue off his plate and put it up for referendum, the state Democrats are hoping to force the issue.

I think that Christie really doesn't have an issue with accepting gay marriage but it would seriously hurt his chances for higher office down the line with the Tea Party. So a referendum would punt the issue. Democrats aren't going to let him off so easily. It's playing politics with gay marriage, when it is a civil rights issue.

Apparently, she bought the Computer herself. From what I heard from others on Radio Dead Air.

I honestly think that while she is a little spoiled, the Dad is unstable. The big gripe her was her venting to friends, and hiding it from the Parents. The only reason he found out was because he broke into her FB.

Most kids do this. Sorry. I've done this with my own father. For years. It helps me to not explode from pressure.

Not so. An acquaintance of mine once told me a story about when he was young and his dad caught him messing around in the rifle cabinet. He took the kid and the rifle outside, shot a bird, then had the kid look at. He told him "This is what these things do, they kill. They are not toys".

My acquaintance wasn't traumatized by this, but learned to respect firearms.

Let's ignore the stupidity. In the end what he really did was destroy his own decision to trust his daughter by buying her this laptop. He was and is in the position of authority. So instead of working things through like normal people he destroys the laptop to feed his own narcissism. The same narcissism that I'm sure he's already taught his daughter. So what did his daughter learn? That if she doesn't satisfy the needs of those around her, say like a future husband, those people will destroy her possessions. What is he accomplishing here? His own 15 minutes of fame? A daughter that will be afraid of her own opinions? We as a nation that allegedly hold the individual up to a higher standard are being told that the individual doesn't count? That her daughter should grow up to be a silent drone?

It's astounding she is (mostly) normal between dealing with my Autistic Dysfunction and my father.

Being a Male, changing last name would be...out of the norm.

Don't do it till you put a ring on it.

It's not really personal. Chris Christie isn't a SoCon, but he'd promised to veto any gay marriage bill that reached his desk in order to obtain the political support he needed to face the massively funded campaign of Jon Corzine. Christie wanted a referendum on the question, and would not have campaigned against gay marriage in that case. But the Democrats decided to force the issue, and Christie decided keeping his promise was the critical thing. I would have made the same choice in his shoes, as my word once given is as good as gold.

Why Don’t Americans Elect Scientists?

...eight out of the nine top government officials in China have scientific backgrounds. There is a scattering of scientist-politicians in high government positions in other countries as well. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has a doctorate in physical chemistry, and, going back a bit, Margaret Thatcher earned a degree in chemistry.

One needn’t endorse the politics of these people or countries to feel that given the complexities of an ever more technologically sophisticated world, the United States could benefit from the participation and example of more scientists in government.
...
There is certainly no requirement for a Singaporean science background, but scientifically literate government leaders who push for evidence-based policies and demonstrate a scientific outlook are needed more than glib panderers with attitude.

They did it to go on record as supporting gay rights and marriage equality. This isn't an unambiguously safe position with no political risk ... even in 2012 it takes courage. The idea that they did it just to tar Christie is utterly ridiculous, they'd have done the same thing if he supported the legislation. In fact they'd far prefer to have him on their side in this battle, yet he made a conscious decision to play the bigot instead.

I'd argue that the really craven political decision here was not made by the NJ state legislature, which is just doing the same thing as NY, WA and a number of other states recently. No, the cynical decision was that of Christie, who chose to be on the wrong side of history on a civil rights issue because he wants the GOP nod at some point down the road. And he sees the kind of hell Romney is getting from the party faithful for having once boasted that he was "to the left of Ted Kennedy" on gay rights issues.

It's never been a big issue for me. My attitude towards gay people changed dramatically in 2004 as a result of having two gay co-workers. But while I ceased by hostile to gayness, I remained a traditionalist who preferred to keep marriage between a man and woman. Events of the last few years have convinced me that such a position is now a bad bet and that further opposition will do more harm than good.

The Ajiro bamboo vehicle a current finalist for the James Dyson Award, as part of the Australian Design Awards.

Rather than using energy intensive processes to bend sustainable bamboo into shape post harvest, Alexander’s unique approach involves manipulating the bamboo stalks during the plant’s growth process. Tension is applied to the bamboo stalks as they grow over a reusable skeletal sub structure, that forms the structural basis of the vehicle. The natural energy from the plant does all the rest.

Mitt Romney should win Michigan. It is his for real home state — not one of the adopted or moved in to and bought a big house home states. Michigan is Mitt Romney’s home state as in his father was Governor of Michigan.

He should win it.

He is losing it.

He is losing it to Rick Santorum.

A PPP poll now has Santorum 16 points ahead in Michigan. An ARG poll has Santorum ahead by 6 points.

If Romney pours money in to Michigan to win, he will do it the way he has won the other races — through destroying his opponent, not building himself up. Romney knows the value of negative advertising. Santorum winning will cause abject panic among the powers that be in Washington, DC because they don’t think he can win a general election. They are sure he cannot win a general election. They are sure all the things he has written about women working outside the home, gays, beastiality, etc. will come back to bite him in the general election.

If Romney wins, the conservative base will panic because he will be one step closer to wrapping this thing up and they don’t want him to wrap it up. They want him beaten. They just aren’t sure they want Santorum, or Gingrich for that matter, to be the one to do it.

So everybody sit back and panic. It’s panic time in the GOP. In a race they should be winning against Barack Obama, the only winner seems to be sepuku.

For those who delude themselves that Romney is a moderate at heart:

[Link: hotair.com...]

Mr. Romney’s transformation on abortion is, in some respects, the story of a man who entered public life in a state whose politics did not match his own. [Story of his life. -- AP] People close to Mr. Romney say they have no doubt that he opposes terminating a pregnancy. Critics and even some supporters say there is also little question that he did what he had to do to get elected as governor.

“He was always uncomfortable on the issue, but he was penned in by having run as a pro-choice candidate in 1994 and by the political realities of Massachusetts in 2002,” said Rob Gray, a senior adviser to Mr. Romney’s campaign for governor. “It was made clear to him by advisers early on in his gubernatorial race that he had to be pro-choice, and he could not show any hesitation.”…

In 2002, as a candidate for governor, Mr. Romney filled out a questionnaire for Planned Parenthood declaring that he supported “the substance” of the Supreme Court’s 1973 landmark abortion rights decision, Roe v. Wade. Six weeks before he was elected, he sat for an hourlong interview with state officials of the advocacy group now known as Naral Pro-Choice America…

By 2005, with Mr. Romney eyeing a possible presidential bid, he began to distance himself from his abortion rights platform. “My political philosophy is pro-life,” he told National Review, a conservative magazine, in an article that June. That same article quoted his top strategist at the time, Mike Murphy, as saying Mr. Romney had been “a pro-life Mormon faking it as a pro-choice friendly.”

Mark explains that he originally wanted the dinosaurs to attack Pancho Villa and his troops at the turn of the 20th century, but then decided against it. "I was really looking for some villains," he explained. "The Pancho Villa thing -- nobody remembers that." Which is true. Instead, Mark's substitution of Union soldiers seems certain to win him favor, at least locally. "I mean, for Christ's sake, people still fight the Civil War down here," he said. "I would gladly have changed the color of the uniforms -- if I was from the North."

Gee. Farah:

Jeffrey Scott, and presumably Breitbart, is of the persuasion that one simply needs to be born in the U.S. under any circumstances, notwithstanding parentage issues, to be a “natural born citizen” and eligible to be president.

There are a number of problems with this assumption – none of which he addresses.
In 2008, the Republican nominee was not born in the United States. The U.S. Senate held hearings to determine John McCain’s eligibility. It determined he was eligible because both his parents were U.S. citizens. I think it was a good decision. But if the definition of “natural born citizen” is, as Scott suggests, simply being born on U.S. soil, what difference would it make that his parents were U.S. citizens? When does that fact become relevant – only when someone is born in a foreign land?

How is McCain's eligibility relevant to the question of jus soli? Whether the fact of parents becomes relevant for foreign soil or not, it doesn't refute jus soli.

By Scott’s definition, every anchor baby – or the American-born offspring of illegal aliens – would also be a “natural born citizen” and eligible to be president or vice president. I know some people actually believe that. But then, some people make no distinction whatsoever between a “citizen” and a “natural born citizen.”

And? Where's an argument here?

The founders’ intent is very clear on this issue. They wanted to avoid even the appearance of “divided loyalties” – something lawyers for John Kerry probably wouldn’t care much about.

And how does that mean that jus soli isn't in effect?

That's the whole of Farah's case. LOL.

Long ago I joined a few other brave souls in trying to stimulate such a national dialogue on an important constitutional issue – what it means to be a “natural born citizen” and eligible for the presidency. I honestly thought Americans might like to take a look at this issue honestly, candidly and intelligently. For my trouble, I was blackballed, vilified, ridiculed and scoffed at by thoughtless people – and I wasn’t alone.

Cookie?

Well, Christie's not the first kind, either, since he's broken his word on many occasions anyway. And he's being guided in political expediency by vetoing this, since he needs to to remain credible in the bigot-fest that is the GOP 2012. So it doesn't really apply here.

Japan: False thermometer may be behind high readings

A faulty thermometer is likely to blame for rising temperatures inside a stricken nuclear reactor at the Fukushima-Daiichi plant, authorities said Monday, as Japan prepares to mark one year since a devastating earthquake and tsunami triggered a nuclear meltdown.

The plant's operators, Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) said temperatures inside the Reactor Pressure Vessel of Unit 2 have been gradually increasing since February 2 and on Monday hit a high of 89.2 degrees Celsius.

The reading is significant because an error margin of 20 degrees Celsius for the gauges takes the temperature well above 100 degrees Celsius, one of the pre-conditions for a "cold shutdown."

You'll forgive me if I don't immediately believe you, TEPCO.

And her also tried to find a compromise, only to be rebuffed. New Jersey already has civil unions, so this was not an urgent matter. The Dems did this to tar Chris Christie and for no other reason.

Or you know, they might have done it to try and allow some people the right to marry the one they love and have their feeling of affections be recognized just as valid as anyone elses......

This article details a sting operation on an Amish farm that sold unpasteurized milk across state lines. The libertarians and anti-government types are all up in arms, saying that a consumer should have the right to choose whatever they want to eat or drink; they usually use the line "I drank raw milk for X years and never got sick, and it just tastes better." That's great, but raw milk is still relatively high-risk because it is so easy to get contaminated, and just because it doesn't happen to you, doesn't mean it can't happen. Government is supposed to watch out for its citizens.

Isn't that a pretty wide open standard? I don't have a problem with the feds advising people on what they should/shouldn't eat but in the end it's none of their business. Well, yes, that's why we have building codes, so you actually have to put a guardrail next to the stairs, and why pools have to have anti-entrapment stuff built into them. Not because people who want this stuff are friggin' morons who think that you can eradicate all death, but to lower the rate of those accidents.

How isn't it? We're talking about raw milk being sold over state lines. And you- though you're squirming around inexplicably-- seem to be against, if not inspection, then the results of that inspection-- keeping unsafe food out of people's hands.

So what is the point of inspection, if people can just sell the shit anyway?

How is drinking raw milk any different than eating raw hamburger?

The word 'raw' doesn't mean the same thing in those two instances, you know, right?

In general, and despite some hyperbole above, regulation serves to protect us from both non-malicious harm from others and self-harm due to our own ignorance.

There are no government regulations affecting breast-feeding, unless someone wants to SELL breast milk, or women want to hire themselves out as wet nurses. I would think that wet nurses would have to be licensed and required to submit to drug, alcohol and nicotine tests, although a woman who breast-feeds her own baby could take dope, drink and smoke.

Here is my beef (I know, red meat is bad for me). When we decide that the government has to protect us from ourselves then we allow others to decide what is and what isn't appropriate for us. The right believe abortion is unhealthy, the Catholic hierarchy believes contraceptives are bad for us, Bloomberg thinks sugar and salt are bad for us, the left believes happy meals are bad for us, and the list goes on. I don't think these things should be left to bureaucrats or a majority vote to decide, it should be left to the individual. That the government can and does misuse regulation isn't an argument against all regulation, any more than the fact that people in capitalism can engage in fraud is an argument against capitalism.

The right doesn't believe contraception or abortion are unhealthy, by the way, they believe that they're morally wrong. So you can kind of tell by the way you have to torture language to make your case that you're off-base. Raw milk isn't being banned because it's a moral wrong.

There have been plenty of stories over the last year about raw milk raids that have nothing to do with selling it over state lines. I posted a story last year about a co-op pitch in dinner that got raided because of raw foods.

Second, while it may be true that not every transaction should be regulated, when the regulation is in place and makes sense (like in the case of raw milk), there is no reason to oppose it.
Third, such regulation may be necessary when there is a big risk of misuse/confusion from ignorance, like in case of raw milk v. treated milk.

Otherwise, should raw milk be allowed to be offered in food joints? I mean, if everything goes? Don't you see where it leads?

Well, you haven't made a good argument, or a well-constructed argument, or a coherent argument, but when you respond to a story about raw milk sellers being busted and that being a good thing with:

You're right. People aren't smart enough to make up their own minds about what type of milk they should ingest. Thank god for politicians protecting us from ourselves.

You are indeed making a half-assed stand against regulation.

Ah, so now this isn't about private property again, but it is about the right of people to buy and sell anything they want unregulated.

So why did you call that a strawman before? You don't want any regulations on what can be sold as food, right?

The government doesn't tell parents what they should feed their children. It's mostly recommendations. If they do it's by default because the government can regulate food in general. But parents are free to feed their children what they wish as long as the child is relatively healthy.

(my emphasis)

That is exactly the point. Regulation of ingestables, and for that matter a lot of products, is a gray area.

You've indicated an absolute objection to regulation of ingestables. That's the basis of this argument.

I (and I assume Obdicut and others) am saying that in cases where harm can come to the ingesters a gray area exists. In some cases the government should restrict, in others it should not. Sometimes it will where it shouldn't, and won't where it should - it is, after all, a human institution. But sometimes it should, and thus we disagree with your absolutism.

Should the government be allowed to regulate and even forbid the sale of raw milk? I argue yes, not because the adult purchaser is ignorant of the risks, but because a large number of adults are trusted sources of others who would drink it without knowledge of the risks. The alternative to restricting sale is restricting use - to, say, only adults over the age of 18. We do that with some things. However, distinguishing raw from processed milk is nowhere as obvious as identifying cigarettes or beer, and so requires even more intrusion to accomplish.

It's a gray area. I disagree with your absolute freedom principle, and am offended that you keep trying to force others into the absolute restriction argument in counterpoint. (Yes, whether you're intending to do so or not, that's exactly what you keep doing.)

Boy do I have a bias about raw milk. I'm a fan of artisan products. At a great wine and cheese tasting we had a cheese expert and artisan cheese producer there. Had some ultra fresh cheese made of course from raw milk. Then I was shown how easy it is to make certain cheeses, as long as I could get some good raw milk. I never looked at the other side carefully.

May I turn the subject around into a look at how we evaluate risk?
Honestly I think California in particular over regulates. But no red line about risk is there to go by in a quantitative sense.

S0-If a product has one chance in a million of hurting you should it be banned? Regulated? Start that question at one in a quadrillion. Work your way down to one chance in two. At what point would you regulate? At what point would you ban? Would that # apply the same to foods and children's toys?

I have worked on one regulatory task force. It was an eye opener.

That's cute, but it doesn't answer the very simple, straightforward question. You still adopted two contradictory positions, and, rather than dealing with it, you're trying to pretend I'm making the absolutist position that everything needs to be regulated. I'm not.

You have said that the government has the right to regulate the sale of things, and said that people have the absolute right to purchase things-- like shit on a stick from a farm to eat-- if they want to. These are contradictory positions. They will remain contradictory even as you try to avoid the topic, and eventually run away.

S0-If a product has one chance in a million of hurting you should it be banned? Regulated? Start that question at one in a quadrillion. Work your way down to one chance in two. At what point would you regulate? At what point would you ban? Would that # apply the same to foods and children's toys?

Yep. That's the interesting question. Attempting to be absolutist is for idiots.

Raw milk cheese is a good example-- in New York, you have to age it 60 days, which, done in the right conditions, is a good step against bacteria. But last year there were a ton of e coli outbreaks associated with raw milk cheese, so they're taking another look at it this year to see what the regulations should be.

I have to run. I'm going to get in my car (#1 killer of americans) to go buy cigarettes (really unhealthy) and eat some breakfast (lots of fat, again really unhealthy) all while not wearing a coat out in the cold before someone decides all of that should be illegal and try to protect me from myself.

Enjoy the day people! Well...enjoy it as much as the do-gooders will let you.

The argument I make about consumption is that people should be able to consume grease -- as long as it's healthy grease. The same with cigarettes or booze. There shouldn't be any addictive chemicals added to cigarettes, etc. One can take both sides to the logical extremes. There are levels of regulation and prohibition.

Later.

Doesn't matter where you hold the bucket, if you're using a bucket you'll eventually get shit in the milk.

If you're using pumps, and remembering to clean properly, you should manage to avoid getting shit in the milk. MOST dairies clean properly MOST of the time. Most, however, is not all.

Police: Iranian blows off own legs in Bangkok blastsWow, these guys are incompetent. Imagine if they had nukes.

BANGKOK (AP) – An Iranian man carrying grenades blew off his own legs and wounded four civilians in a trio of blasts that shook a busy Bangkok neighborhood on Tuesday, Thai authorities said.

The explosions came a day after an Israeli diplomatic car was bombed in India — an attack Israel blamed on Iran. Authorities say its unclear whether Tuesday's Bangkok explosions were linked to the New Delhi attack, but Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said, "we can't rule out any possibility."

Thai security forces found more explosives in a house where the Iranian man was staying in Bangkok, but it was not known what targets they might have been meant for, Police Gen. Pansiri Prapawat said.

Pansiri said a passport found at the scene of one of the blasts in Bangkok indicated the assailant was Saeid Moradi from Iran. Authorities in Tehran could not immediately be reached for comment.

Didn't the Iranians say they had nothing to do with yesterday's bombing in India? This must just be coincidental.

The biggest obstacle to anything but combat (overt or covert) is that all sides assume all other sides are negotiating in bad faith. fwiw, I've become convinced there are some individual bad actors in all the parties that are sabotaging peaceful intent of all the other actors even within their own parties.

It's not enough to identify the bad actors in the other side's group. It's necessary to identify and neutralize one's own as well -- something that applies to all the parties.

Thing is, because the bad actors are highly placed and influential if not absolutely powerful, the whole thing's a mess.

In analyzing the Iranian position, one has to understand that the mullahs are likely splintered into a couple of factions, and Ahmadinejad has the support of the most influential of the mullahs even though he's more extreme in his position than the mullahs might otherwise be. As the official voice of the Iranian regime, Ahmadinejad's positions are bellicose and a real reason to worry.

However, that bellicosity also covers for real problems with the Iranian economy. The Iranian economy isn't much better than those of the other countries in the Middle East and North Africa who overthrew their governments because the economic opportunities simply aren't there and they wanted more say in how their governments function. So, from that perspective, looking to rattle the sabers with the US and/or Israel makes sense. Unite the people behind a common foe. Blame the US/Israel for all that ails the country.

The mullahs' fixation on a military confrontation and crackdowns against dissenters (even though the opposition was led by Mirhussein Mousavi, who was accepted by the mullahs as an opposition candidate to run against Ahmadinejad) means that they've got a real fragile situation and they're potentially opening themselves up to the same kind of situation that befell the Shah when the revolutionaries took over (establishing the Islamic regime we see now).

re: #461 Gus

Could be said that each sides wants to win. One or the other wants complete dominance.

Except that's not completely true.

Each side has some who want dominance. Each side has some who want peace. Within those sub-groups there are those who want it at all costs, while others want it conditionally. (dominance short of world war. peace short of surrender. that sort of thing.)

There are two groups of bad actors. One is the group that demonizes others; either the other subgroup or the other side. The other group of bad actors, and in my opinion the worst, is the set that says it is of one subgroup/side but acts to the benefit of another subgroup/side.

I should point out this isn't anything new in mankind's history. There's no easy solution. The most success, however, seems to be when we succeed in identifying all (or at least most of) the bad actors.

Fair point. The mullahs (the Guardian Council, Assembly of Experts) as a whole vote to approve who is or isn't eligible to run. However, even if only a segment of the mullahs are looking for a conflict that Ahmadinejad is pursuing this course of action suggests that those who oppose the move are in the minority among the council and aren't in a position to stop things. Two other alternatives: (1) Ahmadinejad is operating outside the control of the Council and is pushing towards a conflict that the Council doesn't want; and (2) Ahmadinejad is operating at the behest of the Supreme Leader.

A mental exercise.

Why are the Iranians building a nuclear powerplant? If you go looking you'll discover it isn't a breeder; it can't be used to produce plutonium or other high-fission products. So why are the Iranians building a nuclear powerplant?

The "they're acting in bad faith" position is that they're building it to:
a) develop familiarity with nuclear materials handling; and
b) provide cover for producing nuclear weaponry.

OK, I can buy that as an argument. What gets me is when I ask the question, "what's the good faith argument", answers get drowned out. after all, Iran doesn't need nuclear power, they're sitting on huge reservoirs of oil and natural gas. There's actually good reason, but you have to assume the Iranian leaders can think and care about both their nation and their people.

1) I can't recall the "law", but developing nations use more energy. For energy (oil, natural gas) producing nations, this means their profits from exports decrease as their appetite increases because they use more of their own product. A "smart" nation would develop an alternative energy source, one that can't be exported, to increase the size of exportable resources.

The preceding is simple and indisputable, and requires only that we assume Iran's leadership sees a problem and an opportunity to solve it. There are other possibilities, of course, that require a little less nobility.

2) A lot of Iran's electricity is generated from coal plants. Iran does not have significant coal reserves, and indeed imports them. Nuclear power would shift energy reliance more from foreign to domestic, especially as Iran has uranium reserves. Again, it requires solely that the leadership be thinking and anticipating the needs of the nation.

3) Adding a bit of subterfuge, we can bring in the peak oil folk. In particular there are a lot of folk on the PeakOil side who think most if not all the Arabian reserves are significantly overstated. If we assume this is true, Iran may be wanting nuclear power because they don't want to be left high and dry when their oil runs out.

Three reasons, none of which require "they want nukes", all of which cover why Iran's reactor isn't a breeder. And you pretty much never hear of any of those possibilities because the "THEY'RE MAKING BOMBS" voices are so loud.

Do some of them want bombs? Probably. It's my suspicion that the more we hammer and threaten military action, the more support we give those voices. After all, the internal argument that works best is not "we can finally get rid of Israel" but "we make invading us very expensive."

Ah - about that "we can finally get rid of Israel" argument, a final point. To make the position valid we must assume that the leaders do not believe or do not care that Israel has an estimated 300 nuclear weapons; that they are willing to see Iran turned into a parking lot and the Sunni centers of Islam reign unchallenged if it means they can finally get rid of Israel.

So I've got three arguments that require assuming the leaders love their nation, and one that assumes the nation's leadership is so fanatical that total self-destruction is fine if it will eliminate one (not both) of the nation's enemies.

Hackers Claim Attack On American Tear Gas Company

LONDON (AP) — A U.S. security company whose tear gas has been used against Egyptian demonstrators has become the latest victim of the Anonymous movement, hackers claimed Tuesday.

In a statement posted to the Internet, hackers claimed to have broken into Combined Systems Inc.'s website and stolen personal information belonging to clients and employees of the Jamestown, Pennsylvania-based firm. They accused the company of being run by war profiteers who sell "mad chemical weapons to militaries and cop shops around the world."

...Anonymous has claimed a series of Web attacks worldwide and has increasingly focused on security companies, law enforcement and governmental organizations. The group has often worked in tandem with the Occupy protest movement in the U.S. and has expressed solidarity with the pro-democracy activists across the Arab world.

Anonymous said it had targeted Combined Systems because it was supplying weaponry used "to repress our revolutionary movements."

One by one, the young women vanished from the dusty farm towns of the Central Valley.

They were often addicts or prostitutes, and their disappearances over a 15-year period in the 1980s and '90s didn't seem to draw much official concern.

Two childhood friends and locally renowned troublemakers, Wesley Shermantine and Loren Herzog, were eventually arrested in 1999 for a series of murders known as the "Speed Freak" killings, and many of the missing were presumed to have fallen victim to the methamphetamine-addled duo.

Shermantine and Herzog never disclosed where they dumped the mutilated corpses of their victims, leaving bereaved families with only grim speculation.

Syrian activists resort to pigeons to communicate

BEIRUT — Cut off by a relentless barrage of government shelling, activists in the besieged Syrian city of Homs have reverted to the age-old practice of using carrier pigeons to communicate with each other.

"From the activists in Old Homs (district) to those in Baba Amr, please tell us what you need in terms of supplies, medicine and food," reads one message attached to a pigeon's leg.

"God willing, we will deliver them to you," says the message, as seen in a video the opposition activists recently uploaded to YouTube.

Now THAT is old school communicating.

re: #485 kirkspencer

Counter arguments to those that you make:

1) Iran is developing the nuclear technologies and know-how for (A) a nuclear reactor located at Natanz; and (B) its own home-grown enrichment infrastructure.

The reactor isn't the problem; it's the enrichment infrastructure. That enrichment infrastructure is located at multiple locations around the country, and the Iranians are purposefully hiding the facilities and locating them in underground facilities to hide them from the prying eyes of satellites. We believe that they have several thousand enrichment cascades, that when running at full operation and capabilities will produce a level of enriched uranium.

Enrichment is a time-consuming process, but once you know how to enrich to LEU (suitable for use in a nuclear reactor), it requires additional processing time to bring it up to HEU and weapons grade.

Focusing on the nuclear reactor is not the real issue here - it's the enrichment capabilities that are the problem; and efforts to try and get the Iranians to buy LEU from Russia to fuel the Natanz reactor rather than going through their own enrichment process is where the problems lie. Iran is obfuscating and hiding their intentions for the enrichment program.

2) As for dealing with the threats towards Israel, note that the Iranians aren't just posing a nuclear threat towards Israel, but to Saudi Arabia and other Sunni-majority countries in the region. Saudi Arabia has indicated that if Iran tests a nuclear device, they'll go nuclear themselves (with Pakistani assistance at that). Israel is the bogeyman for Iran, but hardly the only one or even the biggest fish to fry.

That also doesn't get into whether Ahmadinejad or Khameni ascribe to Twelver theology and the need for a conflict to bring about the revelation of the Mahdi - and whether the martrydom of millions of Iranians would be acceptable to achieve that goal.

Iranian Boats Shadow USS Aircraft Carrier in Gulf

ABOARD THE USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (AP) - The American aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln has passed through the Strait of Hormuz, shadowed by Iranian patrol boats.

But there were no incidents on Tuesday as the Lincoln's battle group crossed through the narrow strait, which Iran has threatened to close in retaliation for tighter Western sanctions.

Several U.S. choppers flanked the carrier group throughout the voyage from the Gulf. Radar operators also picked up an Iranian drone and surveillance helicopter in Iran's airspace near the strait, which is jointly controlled by Iran and Oman.

Ironically, the most likely attack (because it would have better odds of success) against one of our ships transiting the straits would be torpedoes launched from a forward quarter (relative to the target). Launching options include mini-subs and "shore"-launch systems.

533 lawhawk  Tue, Feb 14, 2012 9:22:25am

re: #526 Gus

Even that US Navy presence is probably undercounting the number of navy ships in the region. I believe that there are a couple of submarines operating with the carrier groups as well (or at least that was SOP for a long time - that the Navy would position subs with their forward deployed carriers to provide additional ASW protection, but that might be tough in the confined and busy waters of the Persian Gulf).

Still, the Navy has to be concerned that the Iranians might send one or two of their small boats to attack US Navy or other vessels in the Straits with explosives - hoping to sink and/or seriously damage the ship akin to the USS Cole incident. It's probably in the back of their minds - and that if the Iranians close on the Navy ships fast, that things might go south in a hurry.

Later, just after the Lincoln rounded the "knuckle" — the nub of Oman jutting out at the southern end of the strait — an Iranian patrol plane buzzed overhead. Another patrol boat was waiting further down the coast, said Rear Adm. Troy Shoemaker, commander of the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Force.

Now it's two plus a plane.

Actually, the "aircraft" (washington post) was fascinating to read. See, it's in the lede, but nowhere in the article does anyone mention Iranian aircraft. The only aircraft mentioned are the 'no-fly, ready' of US aircraft on deck.

I have become less and less trustful of the Washington Post's reporting, and this is a reason why.

In New Op-Ed, Romney Reiterates ‘Let Detroit Go Bankrupt’

"My view at the time — and I set it out plainly in an op-ed in the New York Times — was that “the American auto industry is vital to our national interest as an employer and as a hub for manufacturing. Instead of a bailout, I favored “managed bankruptcy” as the way forward.

Managed bankruptcy may sound like a death knell. But in fact, it is a way for a troubled company to restructure itself rapidly, entering and leaving the courtroom sometimes in weeks or months instead of years, and then returning to profitable operation. [...]

By the spring of 2009, instead of the free market doing what it does best, we got a major taste of crony capitalism, Obama-style."

US Navy transits of the Straight of Hormuz usually include a couple (or one!) Iranians shadowing. Personally, I prefer a true Iranian patrol ship vice the dozens of smuggler cigarrette boats that criss cross in front of you at much closer distance than an "official" Iranian ship. Those small boats, who could be anyone scare most Navy folks more than a warship.
