What Satan Has to Do With Whitney Houston's Death
Houston's voice was a gift from God and a gift to the world – a display of God's common grace, which theologian John Murray defined as "every favor of whatever kind or degree, falling short of salvation, which this undeserving and sin-cursed world enjoys at the hand of God."
When people begin tracing "back the path of joy," they will ultimately be directed to God who is the Giver of those gifts, Wax shared.
That's not exactly the path I was directed to by listening to Slayer. Maybe I'm just not listening right.

How the hell is birth control harmful?
Because you're being a selfish asshole when you use it and are cock-blocking God. That's how.
Colbert laid out the actual Catholic teaching on contraception. If you use it, you're denying God the ability to bless your sexual union with a baby. It just becomes an act of pleasure and not procreation. Ergo, it's harmful. Or something.

Christine O’Donnell: ‘Door open’ to another run, spot in Romney administration
The Tea Party darling said she would also consider a hypothetical offer for a job in the Romney administration. She has endorsed the former Massachusetts governor in the GOP presidential primary.
“Well, who knows?” O’Donnell said. “I have to continue to help Gov. Romney in any way that I can. Whether or not I would actually work in the administration depends, again, on what role, on what capacity, and what else was going on in my own career at the time.”
The real question on the minds of Americans, which goes unanswered in the article, is whether or not she would turn Romney into a Newt.

Oh no, they're saying mean things about me in the comments at Jeffrey Goldberg's post at The Atlantic: There's Racist Dog-Whistling, and Then There's... Racism - Jeffrey Goldberg - National - the Atlantic
Look, Johnson can rebrand himself all he wants, but it won't work for all but the cult-of-personality sycophants still remaining on his blog, or Leftists that chanced upon his recent material. However, the latter would be appalled if they knew of his Fox News Lite perspective pre-2009, which included everything from Photoshopping Arafat as a gibberish-talking grouper to enabling comments just as racist as those on Fox ("r a g h e a d", etc.), except they were towards Arabs/Muslims, so that was a-ok because it enabled Johnson to process his post-9/11 angst. Contents he's never ever disavowed, by the way, unless disavowing means picking a more Obama-friendly target and beating it to death.
I am disappointed Goldberg is getting information from someone so non-nuanced and ideologically inconsistent, no matter how valuable.
Nope. "R a g h e a d" and similar bigoted slurs were always unwelcome at LGF. People who used it had their comments deleted and if they continued, they were banned.

10) Speaking of 9/11, do you think that there was a big government conspiracy behind it or was Bush just being incompetent?
I don’t think Bush was personally behind 9/11 (for the record). The longer he’s been the pres, the longer it appears that he’s nothing more than a privlidged stooge with a big political name. If it was anyone in the gov., it would have been with the PNAC chesspieces. Cheney, Libby, …alll those guys. I do find it very suspicious the neo-cons were talking about ‘new pearl harbor’ a year before 9/11. I’m not ready to buy into ‘bombs in the WTC’ yet, but it could have been a very departmentalized operation and probably more of a ‘let it happen’ scenario. Bush is totally incompetent though LOL ….they’ve proven that all they’re good at is winning elections. The rest of us are screwed

Really, it was amazing for me to see my classmates who my sophomore year of high school suggested even nuking Iraq turn into Ron Paul like people on foreign policy because the war wasn't easy. On an added note to that, everyone who thinks a war will be quick and easy should read WWI letters from the soldiers there. Doesn't matter if they're British, French, German, Russia, Austrian, whatever. I read some German ones when I took German history last year and it was just amazing to see the changes in mindset.
We had to read All Quiet on the Western Front in high school, which was a rather sobering assignment. Particularly towards the end, as the cynicism and disgust takes hold on the characters. I look at the incidents happening now in Afghanistan and previously in Iraq and begin to understand part of the motivation. All we back home see is one big war game, flipping past casualty reports and failing battles to get to the sports section of our local newspapers.

That's one of my all time favorite novels. I read it the summer before we went into Iraq actually. The beauty of it to me is one forgets that Paul and his fellow soldiers are from a country that was our enemy during the war but you lose all sense of nationality. And I think that was Remarque's brilliance and I think that's why the Nazis hated that book so much. Anti-War message obviously aside.

Dr. Gatling invented the gun that still carries his name because disease was the biggest killer on the battlefields of his time, and so thought that such guns would reduce the size of militaries in future wars.
Hiram Maxim claimed that the inspiration for his gun came from an American who said the most money to be made was in inventing a machine that would allow the Europeans to kill each other with greater efficiency.

The Tea Party’s war on mass transit
In the week since House Republicans introduced their proposed transportation bill, one thing has become clear: It has virtually nothing to do with fiscal responsibility.
The Tea Party soared to power on the notion that it was the antidote to wasteful government spending. It’s now clear that reigniting the culture wars was a top priority, too. From guns to abortion, the extremist wing of the Republican Party has fought to turn back the clock on many socially progressive ideals.
Mass transit is its newest target.
“Federal transportation and infrastructure policy has traditionally been an area of strong bipartisan agreement,” says Aaron Naparstek, a Loeb Fellow at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and founder of Streetsblog.org. “Now, it seems, Republicans want to turn cities into a part of the culture wars. Now it’s abortion, gay marriage and subways.”

Iran-Latin América links drawing attention
Latin América rarely comes up as a major issue in U.S. presidential races, but this time it will: There are growing signs that Iran's rising presence in the region will become a contentious election topic.
Republican hopeful Mitt Romney and leading Republicans in Congress are stepping up their attacks on President Barack Obama for allegedly not doing enough to stop what they see as Iran's intention to use Latin América as a launching pad for terrorist attacks against the United States.
The issue is drawing growing attention in Washington. On Thursday, as Iran launched its own region-wide Spanish-language TV network in Latin America -- a follow-up to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's fifth visit to the region in as many years -- the Republican-controlled House Foreign Affairs Committee held hearings about 'Iran's agenda in the Western Hemisphere.'

I have single handedly been maintaining the fertility rate for Jewish-Americans, however even I retired, and passed the baton (so to speak) on to the next generation.

On an added note to that, everyone who thinks a war will be quick and easy should read WWI letters from the soldiers there. Doesn't matter if they're British, French, German, Russia, Austrian, whatever. I read some German ones when I took German history last year and it was just amazing to see the changes in mindset.

If you want to prevent abortions, you make sure everyone has health care, a high school education and birth control. Not the exact opposite.
See the three things you suggest are socialism and bad. But yeah this is why I hate the pro life political groups. They ally with the party that offers no solutions to the situations that force many women especially poor ones to choose to get abortions in the first place. They think just saying NO ABORTION will solve the problem just like the abstinence only idiots with teen sex.

Hard to say it was because of the number of children. Miscarriages happen, and they had another early in their marriage, which they appear to believe was due to their having used contraception early in their marriage.
I do think that Michelle's fertility, which is pretty impressive, is starting to wind down.

Having listened to more than one of their wingnut followers, they seem to believe that the problem is that poor aren't getting married enough, aren't working hard enough, and aren't praying hard enough. Because they know that the rich do all three and that's why they're rich.

The joke of this entire Iran discussion is that Iran has been trying to obtain Nukes for 20 years. It is well documented, and they have made attempts both through the Khan network and the North Korean's to get this program started. Not one American administration did shit to stop it, neither Republican nor Democratic. For republicans to put this on Obama and him being soft is absurd. It is entirely likely that it is too late to stop the program with military strikes. Regime change is really the only possible solution, and it will not come by attacking Iran. It will come with completely crippling sanctions coupled with real support for the opposition.

It's somewhat amusing that people seem to think those of us who joined LGF post-2009 were somehow new to the internet or political blogs prior to joining. As I've said before, I happened upon the "old LGF" on numerous occasions, and quickly exited when I saw what sort of things were posted here. Knowledge of what LGF used to be isn't some shocking realization for me, and I assume it's not for many other post-2009'ers as well.
Even if someone was unaware, it's not as if the archives are kept under strict lock & key. Anyone is free to go in and look around if they have the desire to. As a matter of fact, if you can manage to train your eyes to skim past the yucky stuff, there's some decent info to be gleaned about the beginnings of the so called "counter-jihad" movement (which has since gone off the rails with the rest of the right).
You should write a book, Charles. You've got a huge and very detailed slice of American history & culture sitting there on your servers.

How would that work though? The only country that's really sucking up to Iran right now is, in large part, Venezuela. There's some exchange with other countries. But this has been going on for a long time now. Wouldn't make sense for Iran to attack "from the south". Keep in mind that South Americans are pretty nationalistic within their own borders and aren't really interested in getting involved in some crap for some idiot half a globe away. Right. But that's Republican paranoia for the most part. Terrorist babies and all that. Otherwise yes, there is Iranian influence. But it's up to us to counter that. I think we're doing fine with the main country of Brazil and Columbia coming in second. There's already an infrastructure for dealing with terrorist threats. As much as an Iranian TV station sounds ominous the majority is still interested in American culture. If South Americans wanted to go anywhere they'd come to the USA. Nope. "R a g h e a d" and similar bigoted slurs were always unwelcome at LGF. People who used it had their comments deleted and if they continued, they were banned.
As for "disavowing" the extreme comments that did show up at LGF, I took responsibility for them, I cleaned them up, and I banned the people who were doing it. And I've put up with an enormous amount of shit from those people and the entire right wing blogosphere as a result.

Get a map and see where the hell it is, and also see that it's a lot bigger than Iraq. It wouldn't be a walk in the park to invade it.
Why would we want to invade it?
There are plenty of Iranians that want to change things. If this became a war, and I hope not, it would not be boots on the ground.

The most recent military hardware I've seen was a Longbow Apache that was set to do the flyover at a NASCAR race my family and I attended a few years ago. They flew the helicopter in from a nearby base and actually had it parked outside the race track a couple of hours prior. It was absolutely hilarious to see all the drunk people scrambling after their portable awnings as the helicopter came in and kicked up a windstorm.

Artist types love their easter eggs. The mess hall in our barracks had a wall-sized copy of the Last Supper, done by a good draftee in his spare time. Each cycle of new soldiers was careful to point out to newbies the places where his vines spelled out "Fuck the Army" and "FTA".

They have a heck of lot more in common with us then they do with Iran.
I have yet to figure out where Brazil is going with their tacit support for theocratic dictatorships. Do they think that hanging out with Russia and China is the future, or is it tending to Chavez style domestic populism of the stupids?

Guatemala has floated the idea of legalizing the drug trade, leading to much wailing and gnashing of teeth in Washington. The Guatemalan president, General Otto Perez Molina, is a tough character who was elected on a promise to take back the countryside from narco gangs. He has been as good as his word but now he wants to change his approach and put the traffickers out of business a different way.
Some observers think he is bluffing in an attempt to squeeze more aid out of Uncle Sugar. I am not so sure. I know a lot of people in that part of the world, including one of the very highest officials in neighboring Honduras. They are beyond fed up with the war on drugs and the US's insatiable demand for illegal cocaine. For us, the war on drugs is a figurative war, a slogan from the Reagan years. For many of the countries in Latin America, though, it is a literal shooting war, with jet planes, armor, and even guided missiles in daily use, and thousands of casualties. They believe that our social problems have turned their countries into war zones, and they are ready to put an end to it. Can't say as I blame them.

CNN dutifully reports on the GOP fake outrage of the day:
Obama aide's 'chimichanga' comment creates a stir
Basically, Dana Milbank writes an article for WaPo about the GOP antagonizing Latinos for not apparent reason. Specifically, he talks about a widely respected Cuban American judicial nominee (approved unanimously by the Judiciary Committee) who the Republicans have filibustered, held and are slow-walking to an eventual confirmation vote. Milbank writes that instead of talking about the actual nominee, Republicans are giving floor speeches on unrelated matters, or alternately, in the case of Sen. John McCain, he's literally talking about chimichangas in what I can only imagine is some parody of Hispanic outreach:
The party simply can’t afford self-inflicted wounds such as the Jordan debacle. “He’s an integral part of our community,” Rubio told his colleagues.
But Republicans didn’t care enough about that to stand up to Paul. Through the “debate” on the nomination, one senator after the other came to the floor — and ignored the delay.
Some spoke about transportation. Others spoke about the budget. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) spoke about the wonders of his state. “The lettuce in your salad this month almost certainly came from Arizona,” McCain said. “It’s also believed that the chimichanga has its origin in Arizona.”
The chimichanga? It may be the only thing Republicans have left to offer Latinos.
Jim Messina, Obama's Campaign Manager, retweeted the last line of the Milbank piece:
Line of the day from WAPO's Dana Milbank: "The chimichanga? It may be the only thing Republicans have left to offer Latinos."
— Jim Messina (@Messina2012) February 15, 2012

It was then for us, too. I don't get your point. Brazil is not a new player on the world stage. Their current president is a former lefty revolutionary who does indeed play to the mob, but only up to a point. Oil baron is a new role for them, but they made great progress in the 60s and 70s when they had to import virtually every drop they used.

Knickers in a twist? Have you paid attention to Brazil's stance lately?
They have massive oil potentials offshore, which is good globally but what direction are they going politically???
They are playing games. Can't compete, which they think they need to, with the USA, so they try to suck up to the second tier, or is it the third?
Yep. I get that way when I see clear and outright American arrogance if not chauvinism as you're displaying here tonight.

Wow! America's enemy now? This must come as news to the US Air Force, which has just selected the Brazilian developed Embraer AT-29 as its new light attack aircraft. (Contrary to much tea bag propaganda, the AT-29s will be built in the US and have at least as much US sourced content as the rival Hawker-Beechcraft AT-6 from Wichita). Worse yet, our ongoing joint naval exercises with Brazil would get a bit dicey if the Navy hears that their old ally is now an enemy.

Exactly. I was going to mention Embraer. A fantastic company. Amongst other manufacturing facilities building parts for US and European auto makers. They constantly participate in joint exercises with the US Navy.

The decision in favor of the A-29's already being disputed in the courts, which seems to now be SOP when it comes to weapons procurement where foreign competitors are allowed to compete against US companies. Seems like every time it happens and the US company loses, they try to fight it out in court while at the same time lobbying Congress to decide in their favor.

...
The Social Party of National Unity (Spanish: Partido Social de Unidad Nacional), or Party of the U (Spanish: Partido de «la U») is a liberal conservative political party in Colombia. It attempts to unite various parliamentary supporters of Álvaro Uribe, the Uribistas, in one political party. Currently, it is Colombia's largest political party.
Security is the top priority of most Uribistas, followed by employment and investment in Colombia. Uribistas also support lower taxes for private companies and for citizens. Also, they are a radical[clarification needed] opposition to current president of Venezuela Hugo Chávez and to the Bolivarian movement that Chavez leads in different countries of Latin America.
It is led by Juan Manuel Santos and Oscar Iván Zuluaga. Most members of the movement left the Colombian Liberal Party but they failed to unite uniting all Uribistas: in particular the Radical Change (Cambio Radical) didn't join. The party took part in the parliamentary elections of 2006, in which it won 30 out of 166 deputies and 20 out of 100 senators.

I wrote about this at some length for a local blog:
We discussed this with some callers yesterday on the radio show. There is a lot of misleading propaganda about the selection of this "foreign" aircraft over the "American" Hawker-Beechcraft AT-6 for the USAF's new Light Air Support program. This is malarkey, horse manure, concocted by cynical lobbyists to exploit misinformed patriotism. In fact, the AT-29 will be built in a new plant in Fort Lauderdale, Fl and will provide at least as many American jobs as the Hawker-Beechcraft competitor. The link provides a long list of AT-29 sub-contractors in the US, including some right here in Texas. The Hawker-Beechcraft AT-6 itself, touted as an American product, is also a foreign design, from Switzerland, and would have been partially built in a new plant in Mexico. Even Brazilian made AT-29s have a large percentage of US made components, including most of the electronics and weapons systems. Both aircraft use the same Canadian built engine. Built for the Mission, AT-29 Super-Tucano official website.

Yeah, but most of that was also true of the KC-30, but that didn't stop the "Made in America!" bullshit. Not only was Northrop-Grumman going to build a new plant to handle their part of the contract, but EADS was supposedly in talks to build their own plant here in the States in order to keep everything on US shores. But Boeing, which should have been barred from competing after its bullshit with paying an Air Force officer to fix "leasing" tankers in its favor, succeeded in lobbying enough greed bastards...er, "politicians," to get the whole thing decided in their favor.

re: #363 ☭_SpaceJesus_☭
interesting
This is where it gets odd:
Ideological platform
The Programatic Declaration (Declaración Programática) is the official ideological platform of the party.
The Social Party of National Unity supports the development of a welfare state and recognizes the family as base of society. It also recognizes and approves globalization, emphasizing education, science and technology as opportunities that can help Colombia succeed in a global market. The party supports decentralization and autonomy of regions. Currently, the Caribbean Region is the first to begin the process to obtain more autonomy.
For "uribistas", security is the first duty of the State. Without security, social programs can't be successful in rural areas controlled by narcoterrorist groups. The concept of Democratic Security, the main axis of Uribe's government, consists of bringing security to different social sectors, including ethnic minorities, journalists, labor unions and regional politicians.
The concept of "Communitarian State" is another important ideological pillar for the party. It emphasizes the development of communities, in order to bring stability to the whole state. The state brings development to marginalized communities while private companies focus on the economy, providing additional products and services.
The Party has a strong think-tank called Security and Democracy Foundation (Fundación Seguridad y Democracia) directed by Alfredo Rangel, which analyzes security in the different countries of Latin America.
The party leader has also claimed that he supports Tony Blair's Third Way approach.

I not only read, I read the Brazilian news and I do so in Portuguese. I wouldn't try to paper over Rouseff's commie credentials. As her many opponents never tire of reminding us, they are real and there are still some tinges of red in her positions. She isn't the whole country and her positions are definitely moderated by pragmatism when they are translated into action. Brazil's coziness with Iran goes back a long way and is nothing new with her. All I see about Hezbollah and Hamas in Brazil is the same kind of grousing and anti-Israel demagoguery we see from certain elements in this country and in Europe. Brazil is still our friend and ally, and putting them on some kind of enemies list is akin to the hysteria over Shariah law in this country. Opposing that is not an endorsement of Shariah and, similarly, refusing to ostracize Brazil is not an endorsement of every stray bit of rhetoric that comes out of Brasilia.

I have done some looking around the last few days and I am kind of shocked at how many overt political organizations exist whose only purpose is to lobby the government have been granted 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, which means their funding is tax deductible.
While the GOP bitches about the influence of lobbyists, they are using questionable at best 501(c)(3) organizations to lobby for their causes, with the taxpayers helping foot the bill. For instance The Heartland Organization that was sponsoring the climate denial classroom material Charles posted about is a tax exempt organization. What a crock.
