Santorum: Satan Is Systematically Destroying America

For Rick Santorum, this isn’t just a contest to win the office of the presidency — it’s an existential fight to the death with SATAN!

Santorum: Satan Is Systematically Destroying America.

Youtube Video

This is not a political war at all. This is not a cultural war. This is a spiritual war. And the Father of Lies has his sights on what you would think the Father of Lies would have his sights on: a good, decent, powerful, influential country - the United States of America. If you were Satan, who would you attack in this day and age? There is no one else to go after other than the United States and that has been the case now for almost two hundred years, once America’s preeminence was sown by our great Founding Fathers.

He didn’t have much success in the early days. Our foundation was very strong, in fact, is very strong. But over time, that great, acidic quality of time corrodes even the strongest foundations. And Satan has done so by attacking the great institutions of America, using those great vices of pride, vanity, and sensuality as the root to attack all of the strong plants that has so deeply rooted in the American tradition.

He was successful. He attacks all of us and he attacks all of our institutions. The place where he was, in my mind, the most successful and first successful was in academia. He understood pride of smart people. He attacked them at their weakest, that they were, in fact, smarter than everybody else and could come up with something new and different. Pursue new truths, deny the existence of truth, play with it because they’re smart. And so academia, a long time ago, fell.

And you say “what could be the impact of academia falling?” Well, I would have the argument that the other structures that I’m going to talk about here had root of their destruction because of academia. Because what academia does is educate the elites in our society, educates the leaders in our society, particularly at the college level. And they were the first to fall.

And so what we saw this domino effect, once the colleges fell and those who were being education in our institutions, the next was the church. Now you’d say, ‘wait, the Catholic Church’? No. We all know that this country was founded on a Judeo-Christian ethic but the Judeo-Christian ethic was a Protestant Judeo-Christian ethic, sure the Catholics had some influence, but this was a Protestant country and the Protestant ethic, mainstream, mainline Protestantism, and of course we look at the shape of mainline Protestantism in this country and it is in shambles, it is gone from the world of Christianity as I see it. So they attacked mainline Protestantism, they attacked the Church, and what better way to go after smart people who also believe they’re pious to use both vanity and pride to also go after the Church.

After that, you start destroying the Church and you start destroying academia, the culture is where their next success was and I need not even go into the state of the popular culture today. Whether its sensuality of vanity of the famous in America, they are peacocks on display and they have taken their poor behavior and made it fashionable. The corruption of culture, the corruption of manners, the corruption of decency is now on display whether it’s the NBA or whether it’s a rock concert or whether it’s on a movie set.

The fourth, and this was harder, now I know you’re going to challenge me on this one, but politics and government was the next to fall. You say, ‘you would think they would be the first to fall, as fallible as we are in politics,’ but people in political life get elected by ordinary folks from lots of places all over the country where the foundations of this country are still strong. So while we may certainly have had examples, the body politic held up fairly well up until the last couple of decades, but it is falling too.

What I love is how he acts like things were just great in the past. Yeah, Rick, maybe you've forgotten what yours and mine Catholic forefathers went through. You know actually being treated like second class citizens because of our faith. Or worse the Black Americans who were enslaved in the name of Christianity.

From my friend, Gerry:

So this inspired me to rewrite the lyrics of Radiohead's Creep in honor of America's pope wannabe.

I give my kids fetuses
to play with all day
Can't marry who you want to
Only who I say
Because I'm so special
So sanctimoniously special
But I'm Rick Santorum
I'm a weirdo
Why the hell elect me president?
I should be pope.

I don't care who I hurt
I want to have control
I want to control your body
I want to control your soul
I want you to notice
That I'm always around
Especially in your bedroom
Because I'm so special

But I'm a creep
I'm Rick Santorum
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here

She's using birth control again
run her out of town
She's run, run, run run
Run

Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
Is something I'm against.
Pope wannabes are special
But I'm Rick Santorum
I'm a weirdo
Why the hell elect me president?
I should be pope
I should be pope.

Because it defined the control structure for the chosen to rule over the others. And then it was corrupted by amendments to allows for women and underclasses to vote along with taking selection of senators from the backroom.

Oh boy, the university that Satorum delivered this at sounds like a real party. Anyway, I found this bit on Wikipedia to be the most interesting:

Ave Maria School of Law was founded in 1999, and for the first nine years of its existence was located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The law school's beginnings lie in discussions between future Founding Dean Bernard Dobranski and Monaghan. The school currently has thirty-five professors including Robert Bork (former United States Supreme Court nominee rejected by the US Senate),[5] several visiting professors, and eight esteemed legal writing professors.[6] Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia assisted Ave Maria School of Law leadership in developing the school's curriculum, and in 1999 Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas delivered the school's first annual Ave Maria Lecture.[7]

65 ReamWorks SKG  Thu, Feb 16, 2012 3:05:16pm

Belief in "Satan" is unique to Christianity. The personification of "Satan" is a Christian concept. You won't find Hindus or Buddhists talking about Satan in their literature. And while there is Satan in the Hebrew Bible, it's an "accuser" or challenger, and not a specific personification. The Wikipedia has this mostly right.

I know this is tangential to Sanatorium's point. But for those of us who are not Christian, it's hard to see "Satan" as a force external to Christianity when it's a part of it.

I wish he'd remove "Judeo-" from his "Judeo-Christian ethic" rhetoric.

67 Killgore Trout  Thu, Feb 16, 2012 3:06:49pm

We were pondering what the Iranians are thinking earlier this morning. I think this explains their motivation pretty well.
What would happen if Iran had the bomb?

analysts and diplomats note that Iran does have many reasons to develop at least a "breakout" capability – the ability to assemble a bomb quickly should it want to. Tehran has watched modern history unfold around it and no doubt has drawn its own conclusions. Acquiring nuclear weapons helped preserve regimes in North Korea and Pakistan, for instance. But in Iraq and Libya, two nonnuclear countries, Saddam Hussein and Muammar Qaddafi were deposed. The Iranian media, in fact, tut-tutted last year that Mr. Qaddafi's fatal error was relinquishing his secret nuclear weapons program in 2004.

"If I was an Iranian national security planner, I would want nuclear weapons," Bruce Riedel, a 30-year veteran of the CIA now at the Brookings Institution in Washington, said in January.

I don't agree with everything in the article but I think it's a reasonably fair and honest look at the situation. Well worth reading the whole thing.

Just asked the Wife to read this screed, without knowing who spoke it. She made it about halfway through before She just shook her head and stated that whoever spoke this was nuts. I then scrolled the screen up so Santorums face name was visible and said, Behold, Rick Santorum, the man who wants to be the next President of the United States. She again, just shook her head and as she was leaving the room, I stated, now you know why I am voting for Obama. She just looked at me and said, yeah.

70 Tigger2005  Thu, Feb 16, 2012 3:08:23pm

The thing is, on one level I can agree with a few of the things Rick says here. There's nothing wrong with suggesting that people could be more responsible, more humble, exercise more self-control, that Hollywood could offer us more positive role models. I am not a fan of moral relativism, there ARE things that are just wrong, and so on. But the way Rick presents it, it is not just a matter of conflicting opinions that are hashed out in the messy give and take of democracy, it is spiritual warfare that brooks no compromise. It is a dangerous and destructive attitude.

71 BongCrodny  Thu, Feb 16, 2012 3:10:28pm

Do you agree with this particular part? I think earlier you argued that Iran is not a rational actor, unlike USSR, so comparison would be incorrect. (Sorry if I'm confusing something.)

Analysts say Iran is not an irrational, suicidal actor that can't be deterred. Nor do they believe it is determined to destroy Israel at all costs. A recent Israeli think tank simulation of "the day after" an Iranian nuclear test came to the same conclusion: that nuclear annihilation will not automatically result.

76 Tigger2005  Thu, Feb 16, 2012 3:15:01pm

I think there's one other thing you have to consider. Does it matter if Iran is a rational actor or not? A nuclear arms race in one of the most unstable regions of the world can bring about a general nuclear conflagaration almost by default. The fact is, the more countries that have the bomb, the greater the likelihood that something will happen. It could start completely by accident. A radar signal misinterpreted.

re: #70 Tigger2005

The thing is, on one level I can agree with a few of the things Rick says here. There's nothing wrong with suggesting that people could be more responsible, more humble, exercise more self-control, that Hollywood could offer us more positive role models. I am not a fan of moral relativism, there ARE things that are just wrong, and so on. But the way Rick presents it, it is not just a matter of conflicting opinions that are hashed out in the messy give and take of democracy, it is spiritual warfare that brooks no compromise. It is a dangerous and destructive attitude.

What you think people were more humble and had better self-control back when the KKK was popular, Jim Crow laws, and during the time of slavery? This idea that this is some kind of new phenomenon is like the 50s stereotypes revolving around "Father Knows Best." If we could get a time machine and plant ourself in say, the Bowery during the days of Tammany Hall. Then compare how Americans were "back in the good old days" to today. People are downright civilized compared to the mythical days of old.

Do you agree with this particular part? I think earlier you argued that Iran is not a rational actor, unlike USSR, so comparison would be incorrect. (Sorry if I'm confusing something.)

I think the article downplays that a bit. There is a religious angle here. The regime isn't suicidal now but they could easily become so. If things change and the religious zealots see and end times prophecy coming they could decide to unleash hell.
A couple other issues the article doesn't discuss: Islamic religious support for suicide bombings originated in Iran during the war with Iraq. There is religious support for killing yourself to kill others. Also Iran is now the world's leading supporter of international terrorism. This opens the possibility of giving their terror proxies (hamas, Hezbollah) materials they otherwise wouldn't have access to such as radioactive material for dirty bombs. They would feel more free to do things like this if they had a nuclear deterrent at home.
A nuclear Iran would also complicate Israeli decisions to take action in Gaza and Lebanon. With nuclear armed Iranian protectors Hamas and Hezbollah would certainly feel safer to escalate conflicts.
It would be a mess.

Another factor that could derationalize Iran is domestic. The Iranian regime is oppressive and there's brewing domestic pressure. The mullah's grip on power is not going to last. As a last grasp to retain power at home could cause them to instigate international conflicts with usual demons of Israel, the US or Europe to save a failing regime at home.

The granddaughter of Trinity Broadcasting Network’s Paul and Jan Crouch has accused the world’s largest Christian broadcaster of unlawfully distributing charitable assets worth more than $50 million to the company’s directors.
The charges are leveled in a federal lawsuit filed by Crouch granddaughter Brittany Koper last week against her former lawyers, who also do legal work for TBN.
“Observers have often wondered how the Crouches can afford multiple mansions on both coasts, a $50 million jet and chauffeurs,” said Tymothy MacLeod, Koper’s attorney. “And finally, with the CFO coming forward, we have answers to those questions.”

Well, it's OK to say that - when you have written a sourced comment.

As it happens, you wrote your own interpretation of Saddam/Al-Qaeda connections without linking to any sources (and suggesting I engaged in historical revisionism).

I replied with a link to a non-partisan govt report which analyzed the alleged connections, and with a link to a news item which showed that the specific claim about asylum was a speculation (and the aforementioned report doesn't support it either).

You may disagree with my interpretations, but you have neither addressed them, nor provided sources for your own interpretations.

There is no way on God's green earth Saddam would offer asylum to bin Laden, nor would bin Laden accept it if it was offered.

As the head of a secular state strongly influenced by Communism Saddam was one of the people bin Laden was trying to get rid of! Everything that bin Laden has done was to overthrow regimes such as Saddam's. As an Islamist he believed that the only way to make the Arab world great again was to destroy the secular states that ruled it and replace them with an Islamic empire.

You need only look at who the first powerful victim of the Islamists was to see how this would be the case.

They are saying that a respected publisher, St. Martin’s, colluded with me to produce a racist, homophobic, anti-Semitic book, and CNN, Fox News, C-SPAN, Fox Business News, and the 150 radio shows on which I appeared failed to detect its evil and helped to promote a moral atrocity.

If my book is racist and anti-Semitic, how did Sean Hannity, Erin Burnett, Judge Andrew Napolitano, Megyn Kelly, Lou Dobbs, and Ralph Nader miss that? How did Charles Payne, African-American host on Fox radio, who has interviewed me three times, fail to detect its racism? How did Michael Medved miss its anti-Semitism?

In a 2009 cover story in the Atlantic, “The End of White America?” from which my chapter title was taken, professor Hua Hsu revels in the passing of America’s white majority. At Portland State, President Clinton got a huge ovation when he told students that white Americans will be a minority in 2050. Is this writer alone forbidden to broach the subject?

There is no way on God's green earth Saddam would offer asylum to bin Laden, nor would bin Laden accept it if it was offered.

Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda link allegations timeline

14 January
ABC News reports that a few months after the embassy bombings in Africa, and the U.S. retaliation against Sudan and Afghanistan, bin Laden "reaches out to his friends in Iraq and Sudan." The report states
ABC News has learned that in December, an Iraqi intelligence chief, named Farouk Hijazi, now Iraq's ambassador to Turkey, made a secret trip to Afghanistan to meet with bin Laden. Three intelligence agencies tell ABC News they cannot be certain what was discussed, but almost certainly, they say, bin Laden has been told he would be welcome in Baghdad.[66]
This story is repeated by CNN on 13 February. The article reports that "Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has offered asylum to bin Laden, who openly supports Iraq against the Western powers."[67]

It was widely reported by reliable news agencies at the time. There was an offer but it wasn't accepted.

re: #132 Killgore Trout

That's what I said this morning.

Here's what you said:

Be careful of revisionist history. Although a working relationship never materialized there were contacts and proposals for collaborative projects between Al qaeda and Saddam. Saddam even offered Bin Laden asylum if the Taliban threw him out.

This was in reply to

Are these the same sources that whispered about Saddam-Al-Qaeda connections, by any chance?

There is nothing "revisionist" in that last comment. The Senate intelligence review states that Saddam distrusted al-Qaeda, refused all requests for operational and material assistance, issued a general order that Iraq should not deal with al-Qaeda. The report states that there is no postwar info that Saddam attempted to facilitate a relationship with bin Laden. The report states that there was only 1 meeting between al-Qaeda and Hussein's regime, while in 2 cases Saddam rebuffed the attempts to meet. That's the whole of 3 communication attempts, as is stated in the report. In the one meeting that did happen Saddam rejected Bin Laden's requests for office in Iraq, mines and training, but considered broadcasting anti-Saudi speeches, altho there is no evidence that any speeches were ever broadcast. You may say that formally this sole meeting means a "connection", but it would be a rather pathetic stance. Then there is a US-Taliban connection too, since there were reports of meetings.
In other words, in context of the discussion my comment was spot-on, while your attempted correction was misleading and revisionist.

TN State Senator worries children might find out gay people exist

Sen. Stacey Campfield’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill made it out of a House subcommittee today, banning discussion of all but “natural human reproduction science” before the ninth grade in public schools.

Before the House education subcommittee acted, chairman Joey Hensley scored bonus points by admonishing all Tennessee parents not to let their children watch “Modern Family” on television because they might discover there are homosexuals in the world.

More Pat Bukkkanan blather:

The modus operandi of these thought police at Color of Change and ADL is to brand as racists and anti-Semites any writer who dares to venture outside the narrow corral in which they seek to confine debate. All the while prattling about their love of dissent and devotion to the First Amendment, they seek systematically to silence and censor dissent.

Without a hearing, they smear and stigmatize as racist, homophobic, or anti-Semitic any who contradict what George Orwell once called their “smelly little orthodoxies.” They then demand that the heretic recant, grovel, apologize, and pledge to go forth and sin no more.

Defy them, and they will go after the network where you work, the newspapers that carry your column, the conventions that invite you to speak. If all else fails, they go after the advertisers.

I know these blacklisters. They operate behind closed doors, with phone calls, mailed threats, and off-the-record meetings. They work in the dark because, as Al Smith said, nothing un-American can live in the sunlight.

Oh, and if we are such strict constructionists, there are Obama-Taliban connections too:

[Link: www.telegraph.co.uk...]

Marc Grossman held the talks with Taliban representatives late last month in Qatar, where a team of Taliban diplomats is based ahead of the opening of a political office there to host negotiations between America, the insurgents and the Afghan government.

“I can confirm that Mr Grossman met with the Taliban representatives in Qatar. When the president (Mr Karzai) was in Rome, Grossman came over to his residence and briefed him about his meetings with the Taliban,” said the senior official, who asked to remain anonymous.

Representatives from the former Taliban regime assembled in Qatar last month, with the aim of opening the official office later this year “to come to an understanding with other nations”.

No penny ante stuff for me.

How about walking down the street making all the parking meters immediately expire regardless of the time left on them?

I've seen a bunch of RWNJ's try to explain away his comment as a joke and saying that liberals just don't have a sense of humor.

There's a thousand comedians over the years from Groucho Marx to Jim Gaffigan over whom I've laughed myself into a near heart attack.

I'll confess to having no sense of humor toward stuff that's just not funny.

Fuck that. He meant it and he showed how ignorant and backwards the modern GOP is behaving towards women. An all-male panel to talk about contraception followed by that aspirin nonsense? I can't imagine why people aren't laughing. =P

Man's a product of his generation, those dinosaurs who grew up in the 50s and so think women being treated as barely intelligent house pets is the way of things.

If I were Satan, I wouldn't be dorking around with the small stuff. I'd go straight into maximizing the suffering.

I'd be doing the math for the drug dealer on the corner on how much more he could make if he started selling that teenage runaway as well as crack.

I'd be whispering into that traveling businessman's ear (the married one, the father) that his wife will never find out what happens out of town, knowing that even if she doesn't, this marriage will never be what it would have been.

I'd spend some time lovingly convinced that woman with clinical depression that this world would be better off without her. It wouldn't; her family will actually suffer for years over this, but the mentally ill don't process these things correctly.

Evidently the right of conscience for doctors who oppose abortion are a matter of grave national concern. The ethical and professional obligations of physicians who would merely like to perform their jobs without physically violating their own patients are, however, immaterial.
Don’t even bother asking whether this law would have passed had it involved physically penetrating a man instead of a woman without consent.

Obama, I'd have no problem with. He seems like the kinda guy who would not look out of place at a sports bar, knocking back a couple while watching his favorite team on the big screen.

Newt makes me think of the sleazeball who shows up at the bar, acting like he's God's gift to women, and walking out with some drunk floozy at last call because he convinced her that she'll be Wife #4.

Romney looks like he'd be uncomfortable stepping foot in a bar, let alone drinking a beer. Not the "den of ill repute" uncomfortable, but the "I'm surrounded by poor people!" sort of uncomfortable.

Santorum looks like he'd march into the bar in robes, preaching to the "wicked" about how they should turn away from their "sinful ways" and embrace God as their true savior...and promptly getting handed his ass before being thrown out the door.

And Crazy Uncle Ron...looks like the kinda guy who'd just bore people to death by trying to turn every conversation into yet another rant against the Fed. "Yes Ron, we know you hate the Fed, we've known for the last three hours."

Romney ‘Delighted’ GM is Profitable, Credits Managed Bankruptcy

Hours after General Motors announced that it earned its highest profit in its storied history last year, Mitt Romney said he is “delighted” at its success and took credit for the managed bankruptcy that helped to rescue the struggling corporation, saying he “recommended [it] from the very beginning.”

Hoo boy.

I just saw this awesome comment on TPM:

The War On Contraception will be an "electoral winner in states with heavy Catholic populations?" Hahaha! Here in heavily Catholic Massachusetts, it's going over like a fart in church. We Catholics here love our birth control and our gay marriage and our universal health care. Gay marriage, it turns out, hasn't ushered in an era of man-on-dog sex. The Catholic Church, on the other hand, has ushered in an era of priest-on-child sex, so you'll need to forgive us for not blindly accepting their advice on how to have sex correctly.

re: #316 Targetpractice

Seriously, I look at Obama and I look at the GOP candidates and that age ol' election question comes to mine: "Would you have a beer with this guy?"

Now Huckabee is the guy you'd jam with. In a way I'm glad he didn't run this year, because he's way more likeable than any of the candidates the GOP is left with.

I think Huck stayed out of this because he knows that, no matter how it plays out, even a GOP win means taking responsibility for a faltering recovery for 4 years. It's a major gamble that could have stratospheric payoffs, but failure would mean virtually killing the GOP as a viable political party.

re: #83 Gus

What you think people were more humble and had better self-control back when the KKK was popular, Jim Crow laws, and during the time of slavery? This idea that this is some kind of new phenomenon is like the 50s stereotypes revolving around "Father Knows Best." If we could get a time machine and plant ourself in say, the Bowery during the days of Tammany Hall. Then compare how Americans were "back in the good old days" to today. People are downright civilized compared to the mythical days of old.

To get the feel for what America was like only about 150 years ago, one only has to watch films like The Gangs of New York; I know it's but a movie, but Scorsese got a lot of facts right.

The "good old days" got down right brutal sometimes.

re: #280 Charles Johnson

LGF Irrelevance Watch -- linked at Slate: Virginia Ultrasound Law: Women Who Want an Abortion Will Be Forcibly Penetrated for No Medical Reason.

I get it now. I get why the people who hate you are so furious lately. Certain people feel like they "made" LGF, that without them it (and you) were nothing. When you broke with them it was important that you suffer an ignominious fate, that LGF exist in limbo—irrelevant, but still alive so they could heap their scorn upon it, you, and everything & everyone connected to you.

Things were slow for a few years, but you kept plugging along, knowing that you'd made the right decision, consequences be damned. Things have been picking back up lately. LGF is getting noticed a lot. This cannot be tolerated.

It can't be tolerated because it means that they can no longer claim credit for your success. You're robbing them and they don't like it one bit.

I want to hear the whole story one day. The story of how a guy who loved music & webdev had his life changed by the events of 9/11...how he walked down a path with people he thought he liked, people who were once friends, and one day realized he was in a dark place with bad company. How did he feel? What thoughts went through his head?

It couldn't have been easy. Everyone who's old enough to have had a dysfunctional relationship or two knows that they're still hard to walk away from. Because they're familiar, oddly comfortable. I'm sure not all the people who left him or who he left were bad people, but they were not longer compatible, so something had to give.

How is is possible that this guy whose world was so shaken by 9/11, whose web site was filled with rage towards Muslims, ended up promoting an essay by a Muslim to the front page of his site on the 10th anniversary of 9/11?1 It must be a fascinating story, if one were to sit down and read or listen to it all in one go.

Will you tell it to us one day, Charles?

Okay, I've let my mind wander wayyyy off of what I originally wanted to say, and I'm posting this at the tail end of a dying thread, so I'll shut up now, heh.

1. It only dawned on me a couple of weeks ago how significant it was that my page was promoted to the front of LGF that day. It sort of shocked me that it took me that long to notice.

What I love is how he acts like things were just great in the past. Yeah, Rick, maybe you've forgotten what yours and mine Catholic forefathers went through. Or worse yet, the systematic slaughter of native Americans (dare I say genocide) because they were "savages"

I'd prefer if no one in the Middle East had the Nuke.

Of course, when it comes to Iran, I suspect that the Saudis think they don't need one of their own.
