Rick Santorum’s Crazed Attack on Prenatal Screening

WTF?
Wingnuts • Views: 31,080

Speaking to the Ohio Christian Alliance today, the GOP frontrunner for the presidential nomination, Rick Santorum, said that he’s opposed to requiring health insurance to cover prenatal screening.

How in the world can anyone be opposed to prenatal testing? Because, according to Santorum, it’s just another part of President Obama’s nefarious scheme to promote abortions and “cull the ranks of the disabled.”

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Campaigning in Ohio on Saturday, Rick Santorum displayed his culture-warrior side in full force, as he harshly attacked President Obama by suggesting the president wanted to see more disabled babies aborted and accusing him of projecting his values - which Santorum claimed were not rooted in the Bible - on the Catholic Church.

Santorum recalled his prominent role in the 1990s debates over the controversial procedure that critics call partial-birth abortion. He lambasted the president’s health care law requiring insurance policies to include free prenatal testing, “because free prenatal testing ends up in more abortions and therefore less care that has to be done because we cull the ranks of the disabled in our society.”

And yes, Santorum also attacked President Obama for not governing according to the Bible.

Earlier in the day, the former Pennsylvania senator charged that Obama’s agenda is “not about you … It’s about some phony ideal. Some phony theology. Not a theology based on the Bible.”

So how would Rick Santorum and his wife have known that her fetus might kill her without prenatal screening?

There's clearly an audience for this sort of talk. Three months ago I wouldn't have guessed.

Well, it certainly seems to be working...strictly with the base. It won't work in a general election campaign. Question is, could Rick make the short-attention-span populace forget his up-to-the-nomination insanity? Would he even have the ability to go all politician instead of preacher and present himself as a moderate? And if he does, will he lose the base? Or will they play along with the stealth-theocrat act?

I certainly do not want to paint with an over-large brush here. Most Catholics believe nothing of the sort. I have encountered some like Santorum who are inimical to modernity and enlightenment philosophy, however, and they are (very) dangerous if allowed near the controls and levers of power.

Rick Santorum denies questioning Obama's faith

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum on Sunday denied questioning President Obama's Christian faith but said the president has an environmental belief "that elevates the Earth above man."

Santorum was quoted Saturday as telling an audience in Ohio that although he accepts the president’s Christianity, he believes Obama adheres to "some phony theology. Not a theology based on the Bible. A different theology."

Asked to explain on the CBS program "Face the Nation," Santorum framed the issue as a disagreement over global warming and how "radical environmentalists" care for the Earth.

The single difference between Santorum and a radical Islamist is the language of the book he wants to cram down everyone's throats.

True that. I guess I'll just repost what I posted on Thanos' page a little while ago:

What an unregenerate miscreant. Why not forgo all medical prenatal care and instead just fervently pray that everything will be okay? If that doesn't work, then they can always have someone come over and lay hands on women's bellies to cast out the "demons" that are causing problems.

The Islamists overseas must be cheering him on and laughing their asses off at us for having someone like him as the front-runner of a major political party.

Considering the current abnormal state of the Republican Party I couldn't even guess if they would have a brokered convention. Otherwise, yes, right now about 42 percent of voting aged adults in America have their heads up their ass.

So apparently, Rick who believes life begins at conception and perhaps even before, also believes that it is ok to be negligent towards that life and the life of the mother by not using available pre natal screening. This is the confused rationalization that results from dogmatic approach to single issue politics. It defies all rational though. It is only a matter of time before Rick argues that Doctors and all modern medicine should be banned because having doctors leads of course to some doctors performing abortions. Moreover, since the only real way to stop abortions is to stop pregnancy, and the only way to stop pregnancy is to stop intercourse, and lets face it, the only way to stop men from wanting to fuck women is to get rid of women, it follows that within a few months Rick will be calling for a ban on women living amongst us.

re: #121 Somalia: Libertarian Paradise

Handy guide:

Manorialism

was characterized by the vesting of legal and economic power in a Lord of the Manor, supported economically from his own direct landholding in a manor (sometimes called a fief), and from the obligatory contributions of a legally subject part of the peasant population under the jurisdiction of himself and his manorial court. These obligations could be payable in several ways, in labor (the French term corvée is conventionally applied), in kind, or, on rare occasions, in coin.

Rick basically endorses catastrophic health insurance being the norm, thinking that if all the insurance companies cover you for is major "unanticipated" costs, then premiums will be low and thus you can afford to pay for everything out of pocket with all that extra money in your pocket.

Let's all take a second to remember the last time that our insurance company lowered premiums for any reason. Couldn't remember one? Yeah, neither could I, but hey, if we have faith...

Ah, Geeze! Santorum's just being stupid and fanatical here. In a no small number of cases, prenatal testing is needed. February 19, 2012 at 4:54 pm

So it’s pea-brained logic to say a woman has a right to own something that can stop a rapist?

It’s pea-brained logic to say a girl should be able to have access to a good school?

It’s pea-brained logic to tell a girl she isn’t an animal and can control all her instincts?

It’s pea-brained logic to say to a girl she is intrinsically valuable and has the right to exist?

See this is what liberals do everyone. They sit in their little snarky gangs together, calling conservatives stupid, illogical, and pea-brained. But they never actually spell out how the assertions made are pea-brained. They assume that stating something is pea-brained, makes it automatically pea-brained.

To me it’s pea-brained to tell a woman she can’t own the one thing that would stop a rapist. But hey, if you’re pro-rapist have at it.

The article argues Rick Santorum used an amendment to 1999's Defense Authorization Act to require the Armed Forces Retirement Home sell a parcel of land to the neighboring Catholic University of America and the sale brought in less than the land value.

Such arguments are at times in error, so I'll need confirmation from a less biased source than Mother Jones to believe it.

164 ibob  Sun, Feb 19, 2012 2:34:34pm

This is absolutely crazy. Does Santorum not realise that antenatal testing also includes blood work( blood type--Rh factor), ultrasounds for both dating purposes and screening for abnormalities?

I don't miss the days of letting women go 3 weeks past the due date because we were not reasonably sure about how far along the patient was without early ultrasounds. I don't miss not knowing about twins, babies that are too small or too big, or birth defects that found only after the baby is born?

I do miss being able to tell parents "it's a boy" or "it's a girl" however.

As noted above, Rick's biggest deal against prenatal care is one I've heard time and again from "pro-lifers," that such care, particularly ultrasound, motivates women to abort children that might otherwise be born with physical problems or deformities, because they "deserve to live." That choosing which babies will and won't be born amounts to "eugenics."

He is clueless. My first pregnancy came about when I was almost 35. It was recommended that I have an amniocentesis to check for chromosome abnormality. I made the appointment, but a few days before the procedure I canceled. I just couldn't do it. I had waited a long time to get pregnant and figured it would be my last chance. Knowing that the procedure had a small percentage of causing miscarriage, I wasn't willing to risk it. My husband and I decided we could handle whatever came along.

My daughter was born perfect and a bit over two years later we had a perfect son. But with my son I did have the procedure as I was almost 38. The decisions are agonizing. I had a choice and that's the bottom line.

Then how do they argue for prenatal ultrasounds prior to abortions? Or does the illogic of their position escape them?

I never quite figured out what he was referring to when he was saying "something that can stop a rapist" becuase there was too much derpitude. A gun? Are guns illegal now? And anyway a gun only work if you have enough time to realize what's happening, pull out the gun, and get off an accurate shot.

Then again, he could've been talking about a chastity belt. It wouldn't surprise me. I wonder if Santorum would be in favor of insurance covering those? I'll betcha $10K of Romney's money that he would.

Why not get these belts and require them to be put on males?

Since every sperm is now sacred a greater number will be saved if we control men rather than women.

Prenatal screenings do lead to more abortions statistically. Doctors who are suspicious of serious abnormalities are more inclined to order them and when confirmed will properly advise on options.

This is a case where Santorum is factually correct and more repugnant because of it. He would prefer that nature take its sometimes disastrous course and jeopardize the health of the mother.

Prenatal diagnosis of coarctation of the aorta improves survival and reduces morbidity

Conclusions

Our retrospective review of a small number of cases of coarctation shows that an accurate diagnosis can be made antenatally. An early diagnosis may improve the preoperative condition of infants presenting for surgery and avoid the tragedy of death at home in undiagnosed cases of an eminently treatable condition.

The IHS Minority AIDS Inititative (MAI)

The Indian Health Service (IHS) will implement up-to-date HIV screening CDC recommendations in pilot site(s) and continue to increase prenatal screening across the I/T/U system in addition to its “early warning” system of detecting rapid increases in the rate of HIV infection among prenatal and highest-risk American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations. The implementation project will be the first of its kind across any Indian health system facility and attempt to integrate all aspects of the CDC recommendations to include the progressive stance of universal screening. As well, the current and ongoing funding continues to improve the prenatal screening rates in I/T/U and is seen as a critical screening and surveillance tool. Early in 2008, with existing MAI funding, there will also be national recommendations ‘published’ within the I/T/U system to address prenatal screening findings and outcomes from FY06-07 funding. This project is also a collaborative with CDC, utilizing CDC assigned personnel to assist with project implementation.

She understands natural resources policy, she is a leader on energy policy, she knows fishing down to the ground (so to speak), and she came up through a fight against corruption. She is prepared to lead on sound money, as her demarche against the quantitative easing of the Federal Reserve — made before the other politicians woke up to the issue — shows. And feature the rock-star receptions she got in such places as Hong Kong and India. There's a lot of tests and procedures that could convince women to pursue abortion that could likewise increase a child's chances of being born relatively healthy. That, ultimately, should be her choice and not the choice of some third party who thinks he's following the will of an "unknowable" diety.

I'll assume I made my point. Basically what Rick Santorum is presenting is a Ron Paul or Randian view of medicine. Perhaps even worse and something close to "see no evil, speak no evil, and hear no evil" and God will mysteriously guide your child to health and mortality. This is never the case. I conclude that being against prenatal screening or testing is not only an anti-science stance but it is anti-life for both the child and the mother.

It's a horribly irresponsible idea to suggest to women that guns will prevent rape in all, or even most, cases. The opportunity to pull a gun for defence can be circumvented through the attacker being a bit sneakier and using misdirection. If women feel the gun makes them invulnerable to rape they're going to put themselves in situations where their real best weapon, their brain, is only half engaged.

Prenatal care and antenatal testing are the reasons the majority of women in this country can expect to take home a healthy baby. Do any of the crazies expect most women and their families to go back back to the way it used to be with all the stillborns or neonatal deaths? Do they really want to go back to the days when one out of four women died from complications of pregnancy? It wouldn't take to go back there- just stop prenatal care and antenatal testing.

Sorry, about the rant. It is just that I see how close we still come to these things every week if it wasn't for modern obstetrics. I just don't usually tell patients that they or their babies would have died if they had lived less than a 100 years ago or lived in a third world country today.

re: #114 Slumbering Behemoth

Oh, and what the hell...

KidA's page that started it all, in case any of you missed it.

Just for fun, I took some time to educate the young, misguided child as follows:

As a liberal woman, please allow me to educate you to realities since you seem quite taken with myths and… weirdness.

1. Can’t control yourself.
I control myself quite well, especially my fertility with effective birth control methods. I control my sexuality by having enjoyable, consensual sex with whom I desire at the time I desire it. I appreciate those liberal adults in my youth who taught me to be wise about my choices, knowledgeable about birth control, and responsible in the way I enjoy both. As an adult woman, I share that knowledge with young women so they, too, will have control in their lives.

2. Can’t protect yourself.
A gun is not the only protection available to a women, nor is it the best. Do you know that most rapes are committed by a man a woman knows, often a friend, date, or family member? Unless a woman is armed 24/7, a gun is not likely to offer protection. Martial arts do which is why as a liberal woman I would like to see every young woman trained in self defense.

3. No right to be born.
This is true. A many as half of all zygotes are spontaneously ejected from the uterus. Those that implant are there by the nurturing and yes, permission, of the women in whose bodies those zygotes draw support – at the expense of the women’s bodies. If a woman does not wish to give birth to a child, she need not offer you or anyone else any reason to terminate that pregnancy. It is none of your business. Children of mothers who chose to continue with their pregnancies know for a fact that they are wanted and loved.

4. Can’t choose your school.
This is just a stupid diversion to argue for taxes paying for your religious schools. You apparently are so fearful of children learning the facts of evolution, environmental stewardship, and thinking for themselves outside of “the bible sez so!” that you use this really bizarre argument as some kind of feminist issue. Ur doing it wrong.

5. Must join a union.
Another stupid, terribly convoluted argument that makes no sense whatsoever. You don’t want to join a union? Don’t. As for women AND men, unions have been and continue to be the reason we have a 40 hour work week, sick leave, maternity leave, healthcare… Oh, and women do spend money on other things than shoes. Your sexism is showing.

6. Destroying the family.
The highest rates of divorce are in red states, the most loudly Christian states. Did you know that? These are also the states with the highest rates of teenage pregnancy because with backwards attitudes like yours young people are not educated on responsible sex and birth control. The most stable marriage and families are among those adults who are college educated, you know, liberal who get married later.

re: #226 Gus

But. Wait. No. I thought that was satire. They're serious?

I'd like to believe it's satire, but no. It's real. OTOH, I refuse to believe that this comment is sincere:

To those who have bought in to idea that Sarah Palin is not smart, how do you account for her success at everything she attempts? Would a governor appoint her to be Chairman of the Alaska Oil & Gas Commission that controlled 20% of America's oil production if she were stupid? Would the electorate of a state kick out a sitting governor (former Senator) in a primary to elect a stupid person? Would a stupid person be able to defeat a two term former governor in the general election? Would a stupid person be able to campaign for and endorse twenty congressional candidates, helping 18 of them to win their elections?

Combine that with being a successful author of a #1 bestseller, the producer of a hit TV series, a successful paid public speaker and political commentator. Her success for Alaska as governor was brought to a close after her VP campaign by phony democrat lawsuits and a political plan with roots in the White House to stop further achievements in Alaska. Alaskans should not be upset with Gov. Palin for resigning, but they should be irate at the national democrat party for stopping the cooperation that Gov. Palin had fostered between the parties in Alaska.

After Gov. Palin's term in Alaska, the state's credit rating was increased while other states were reduced. That couldn't be because she trimmed the budget, increased monies paid to the state by oil companies, reduced debt, and started a rainy day fund of billions of dollars, or that she pre-funded education one billion dollars? All due to one stupid governor?

Meanwhile our geniuses in Washington have increased our debt by 5 trillion dollars in the last three years. There is a lot that one "stupid" former governor could teach these geniuses.

I needed a good laugh today. That comment does it.

He won't because he's terrified of offending the socons, even though they hate him anyway. He's still hoping to win them over so they will come out and vote in November.

The thing is that this wouldn't offend them that badly. And taking Santorum to the woodshed on this one would appeal to women who are socons, whatever they tell the pollster. And it would gain Romney the votes of the more moderate women he'll need to actually win the White House.

Mitt Romney should think it this way: "If the I am rejected by Republicans for favoring prenatal screening, then the 2012 GOP nomination is a poisoned chalice and I would not want it anyways."

re: #200 The Yankee

I don't care about any one owning a gun as long as they have no prior records or are insane. But I doubt it is very good at stopping most sexual assaults. Or most crimes in general. Because of the element of surprise that most criminals have on the victims I doubt that the victim would ever get a chance to get the gun.

Now a dog on the other hand is far more useful even a small one that can give you a warning.

Even with gun drawn and at the ready, there is still no guarantee that you're attacker won't be able to close the distance and fuck your shit up before you can squeeze off a round.

This is why law enforcement has a 21 foot rule for non-lethal deterrents, because a capable person in good shape can quickly close a distance of 20 feet and over take you before you can react in enough time to pull the trigger.

On that note, I'm totally in favor of enforcing the laws we already have on the books, not in passing new ones.

The only gun control I would ask for is mandatory gun safety classes and time on a firing range before you get a license. You don't have any business owning a gun if you don't know the first thing about how to properly store, clean, and maintain it, and you sure as hell don't need a gun in your house if you don't know how to fire the damn thing. Oh, and keep guns the hell out of bars. I worked in a bar. The last thing a bunch of drunks need is firearms at the ready.

Maybe the women should be more responsible and just pull the gun and blow the guy away at the first sexual advance. Otherwise, she was obviously asking for it!

There is a new place on South Street, I believe called S.O.S, which is damn good. And there is a joint that sells nothing but ice cream that is on a corner some where on front street in Old City. Might of always been there but I first noticed it when I seen a line of about 20-30 people waiting to get some.

Is the ice cream any good?

I'd really love to see the Sanatorum-type theocrats and the Paul Ryan-style capitalist-anarchists segue off into the Constitution Party or the Conservative Party or some other catchall for cranks and unreconstructed paleocons.

Then the GOP might actually be composed of people who actually want the government to succeed at what it does, and want to temper its powers and responsibilities with personal liberties and scientific inquiry.

No. The current GOP is radical anyway. Even if Romney is the nominee, he's not going to be able to swing back to the middle too much in the general without demotivating the base. The GOP is stuck on crazy. So what's the appeal of the Constitution party this go round?

What I'm hoping is that they lose badly and fracture. If Romney is the nominee and loses, the paleocons and religious-right whackos may say that the GOP will never run a 'true' conservative and so abandon it. If Santorum gets the nomination and loses-- loses very badly-- the anarcho-capitalists will blame the religious-right types and may drive them out or drive themselves out.

This is all just fantasy. We'll see if the wall is too high.

Since we're on a freak binge, I noticed that a prominent Aussie idjit John Jay Ray, who likes to accuse "the Left" of antisemitism and was one of the first to claim that the Nazis were "Leftists" has made this update to his sidebar:

[Link: dissectleft.blogspot.com...]

Leftists call their hatred of Israel "Anti-Zionism" but Zionists are only a small minority in Israel

Some of the Leftist hatred of Israel is motivated by old-fashioned antisemitism (beliefs in Jewish "control" etc.) but most of it is just the regular Leftist hatred of success in others. And because the societies they inhabit do not give them the vast amount of recognition that their large but weak egos need, some of the most virulent haters of Israel and America live in those countries. So the hatred is the product of pathologically high self-esteem.

Conservatives, on the other hand could be antisemitic on entirely rational grounds: Namely, the overwhelming Leftism of the Diaspora Jewish population as a whole. Because they judge the individual, however, only a tiny minority of conservative-oriented people make such general judgments. The longer Jews continue on their "stiff-necked" course, however, the more that is in danger of changing. The children of Israel have been a stiff necked people since the days of Moses, however, so they will no doubt continue to vote with their emotions rather than their reason.

Fortunately for America, though, liberal Jews there are rapidly dying out through intermarriage and failure to reproduce. And the quite poisonous liberal Jews of Israel are not much better off. Judaism is slowly returning to Orthodoxy and the Orthodox tend to be conservative.

384 Charles Johnson  Sun, Feb 19, 2012 5:10:48pm

The exact meaning of it is, of course, under heavy debate, but after Aaron fashions the golden calf God gets wicked pissed, and says that he's seen this people and they're stiff-necked. Later Moses says, yes, they're stiff-necked, but asks god to still forgive them and come among them and accept them as his people.

Some scholars see the stiff-neckedness as a reason being given for god to be lenient, others see it as a "despite the fact they're stiff-necked, please still forgive them and accept them", others see it is both positive and negative-- God is saying the Jews are a pain in the ass and hard to get through to, but obviously that means once he does they'd be obstinant about their new faith, too.

Some others see stiff-necked as an attribute applying to all of humanity, not just Jews.

It's the only real descriptor given of Jews (assuming it is of Jews and not of all people) in the Torah.

Well, that's one interpretation, but it could also just mean 'mired in tradition' or 'not open to new ideas' or 'unwilling to change based on evidence'. There's a lot of debate. It probably doesn't mean proud and independent, since the description is being given after the Jews, frightened by God (and Moses's) absence, get Aaron to create the calf as the emblem of a deity they can worship-- not a very independent-minded thing to do. I think it's more likely a descriptor that the the Jews are traditional, and come from a polytheistic tradition and so adjusting to a monotheistic (or at least, if not believing only in one god only giving worship to one god) religion is going to be difficult. But-- and this is my preferred interpretation-- it also means once they have converted, they'll be quite steadfast in their new faith.

It comes up one more time, I think, only, when they're about to fight the Caanites and Moses reminds them of it in a pep-talk, that they're doing this for their ancestors and they had a covenant with God and God would be on their side in the battle because he'd agreed to it long ago, in that deal with Moses.

What Progressives should stay up nights thinking about is once they make the test for certain medical procedures and drugs up to the federal government, all it will take is an anti-abortion President to shut it all down. Roe v Wade will mean nothing once the government is already involved in the choice abrogating any claim of privacy.

490 carlaschluge  Mon, Feb 20, 2012 8:51:33am

Hey Rick. Prenatal screening encourages abortion?! Pretty big jump in logic there. How about prenatal screening enabling early medical treatment before birth? How about prenatal screening preparing new parents for a challenged baby before its born? How about letting parents make a very personal and informed decision about their, and possibly their child's, future?

At this rate, President Obama just needs to sit back and enjoy his popcorn while the economy improves and the Republicans lose the independent voters!
