Todd Rundgren: Hawking (Live)

I see bodies strong and running, with minds not comprehending
Music • Views: 30,351

Perhaps the greatest song ever written about a world-famous scientist, this 1990 performance by Todd Rundgren of “Hawking” is one of the best I’ve seen. It’s quite a bit slower than the album version (which must have been hard for the musicians — playing really slow and keeping good time can be very difficult), but Todd’s voice is amazing and the band is just terrific.

Youtube Video

Whenever I, I close my eyes
Then I don’t mind being the way I am
But whenever I try explaining why
I know I never can

Now that it’s
Gone, paths I used to travel
Gone, things I used to handle
Gone, once I had a choice what to be

But then God kissed me
And I lost it when I fainted in his arms
Have pity on me brother, I’m trapped behind the mirror
I’m out here on the border

Wondering why, why was it I?
Maybe my mind wouldn’t have come this way
If I’d taken my time, answers only unwind
When you can’t look away

Maybe ‘cause
I want the secret broken
I want the casket open
I need to see what no eyes can see

And when God kissed me
Then I dreamed them when I fainted in her arms
Now I’ve got to go on sleeping
Lean in a little closer and I’ll tell you what I’m dreaming
I’ll tell you what I’m dreaming

I see time without beginning
Space without an ending
I see bodies strong and running
With minds not comprehending

Have pity on your brother
Please have pity on your sister
Take pity on each other
And on every living creature, have pity somebody

Whenever I open my eyes, I can’t believe it’s real
It’s a jungle outside, yes it is, yes it is
People just survive
They can’t reach the high ideal

But I know if I can’t recover
At least I know, I know the book from cover to cover
And who knows? I might dream forever
Since I’ve met the world’s greatest lover

When God kissed me
And I knew it when I fainted in his arms
Let’s dream together people

Have pity on your brother
Have pity on your sister, please
Take pity on each other
And on every living creature

We’re all trapped behind the mirror
Out here on the border, yes we are
Please have pity

Pity on your brother
Pity on your sister
Pity on each other
Every living creature

There are horribly too few odes to scientific genius. Kind of sad when you think about it.

I think the Collapse of Syria is having a positive effect on Israel-Palestine, as horrible as it is to say. From ResearchChok:

I would also like to point out that a collapse of Syria would likely drag Lebanon in too.

I think what maybe going on here is that both sides agree that a much, much more serious problem is about to occur.

I see your skepticism. However, I think there is a chance for something to happen. Especially considering the fact that Syria seems to be imploding.

The only thing I would like to see added is assurances about the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the Dome of the Rock. Likud is no better than the BJP, who 20 years ago incited the destruction of Babri Mosque. I want it in writing that those two will not be allowed to be touched.

Well, considering they have never done anything to damage the mosques, what makes you think that they have any intention of doing so? Also: they're in power, so they would have already started by now, don't you think?

It's impossible in Israel for any party to hold complete power, they always have to join with little one-issue parties in order to get a coalition.

The major issue in Israel at this moment considers "Haredim" the enemy, not Palestinians, Arabs or Muslims.

Even Romney is pretending to be more conservative than Santorum:

Romney on Friday accused Santorum of expanding government during his two terms as a congressman and two terms as a senator.

"I hope that people take a very close look at his record because he was in Congress for about 20 years and during that time the size of the federal government doubled," Romney said.

"And, by the way, he voted to raise the debt ceiling five different times without compensating cuts," Romney added. He said Santorum voted for "billions of dollars in earmarks."

Because in the past Santorum has gone along on various spending bills many of the diehard fiscal conservatives think he's too "liberal".

Yes, really.

It's actually really embarrassing to use the term 'fiscal conservative' to describe these people.

There is nothing, nothing, conservative about this brand of cultish lunacy. Nor, in fact, is there anything fiscal. It's radical nihilism. It's frothing rage created out of whole cloth by media, nothing more than Pavlovian anger at the words 'debt' or 'spend' without any understanding of what they mean.

Heartland Institute general counsel Maureen Martin has sent letters to the DeSmogBlog and several other publications demanding that we remove all Heartland-related documents that we posted on February 14, as well as all related commentary.

"We have not identified any."

There seems to be a serious factual mistake in the alleged memo:

[Link: www.theatlantic.com...]

Koch says that their contribution was for health care, not global warming:

The documents presented by the blog indicate "[the Foundation] returned as a Heartland donor in 2011 with a contribution of $200,000. We expect to push up their level of support in 2012...if our focus continues to align with their interests." But this is not so. The Foundation gave just $25,000 to Heartland in 2011 (the only such donation to that organization in more than 10 years) and that funding was specifically directed to a healthcare research program, and not climate change research, as was erroneously reported.

Statistically speaking, the Foundation's contribution represents approximately one-twentieth of one percent of Heartland's total funding over that ten year period. The Foundation has made no further commitments of funding to Heartland.

And indeed, when you look at the fundraising document, the coding next to Koch's donation is "HCN" which certainly seems to be their health care code--other donors with that code include Bayer, Amgen, EliLilly, and GlaxoSmithKline.

Just another of many reasons it's suspect.

The documents presented by the blog indicate "[the Foundation] returned as a Heartland donor in 2011 with a contribution of $200,000.

Presumably this is in aid of talking us all into HSA's.

Spending on health care would fall by approximately 30 percent, without negative effects on health, if more people chose high-deductible insurance and self-insured for small medical expenses by opening health savings accounts (HSAs). Health care providers would become more efficient if they had to compete for our health care dollars. A whole layer of bureaucracy in government agencies, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), and insurance companies could be eliminated.[Link: heartland.org...]

Babylon 5 was pretty good about it.

The class of warships that Earth had in B5 were shown, initially, using rotating sections, to provide inhabitants with an acceleration to force them down to the floor rather than just float around.

Only one problem - angular momentum. Rotating mass is difficult to deal with in real life, and in fiction is pretty much ignored.

The B5 ships with their rotating sections could not have been turned in direction very easily, and trying to force the issue would probably have torn the ships apart (based upon their design and likely construction.)

Ok, ok... perhaps I'm asking for too much.

171 Obdicut  Sun, Feb 19, 2012 8:02:52pm

re: #165 Charles Johnson

It doesn't depend on her credibility, though. The other documents show that the Koch contribution was marked for health care-- not that that's any better, morally since the Heartland Institute's propaganda on that subject is repellent and foul. But it does make the 'strategy' document that much more questionable.

The big question, of course, is who the million-dollar anonymous donor is.

Oh, and if Heartland violated its 503(c) status with lobbying and candidate support.

I don't see how connections refute arguments, though. It's not like I rely on unverifiable opinions. The Fundraising PDF is available, see p. 22 for the table. It clearly states that 200,000$ is not a 2011 donation but a projected 2012 donation, so the memo got it mixed up. And the code is indeed HCN, as in Pfizer et al., so the memo is outright incorrect in tying it to AGW agitprop.

Santorum finally compares Obama to Hitler:

Santorum sees the situation as so dire that during a Lincoln Day Dinner in Mason, Ohio on Friday, he likened the election to World War II and urged voters in the state to model themselves after the Greatest Generation of the 1940s that fought the war. He extended that metaphor on Sunday in a speech to more than 2,000 supporters at a megachurch in Cumming, about an hour outside of Atlanta.

"Remember, the greatest generation for a year and a half, sat on the sidelines while Europe was under darkness," Santorum said, going on to explain why Americans delayed entering the war. "We're a hopeful people. We think, 'Well, you know, it'll get better. Yeah, he's a nice guy. I mean, it won't be near as bad as what we think. This will be okay. I mean, yeah, maybe he's not the best guy after a while, after a while you find out some things about this guy over in Europe who's not so good of a guy after all ... '"

"It'll be harder for this generation to figure it out. There's no cataclysmic event," he said.
