Santorum Compares Obama to Hitler, Then Denies Comparing Obama to Hitler

The wingnut two-step

Rick Santorum’s rhetoric just keeps getting wilder, and today he’s trying to deny that he compared President Obama to Adolf Hitler, one day after explicitly comparing President Obama to Adolf Hitler.

(CNN) - Rick Santorum on Monday denied he was comparing President Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler while using a World War II analogy the previous day.

During a speech at a Georgia church on Sunday, Santorum paralleled the election to America’s slow response to the swelling Nazi presence during the late 1930s. He urged his audience to get involved and not sit on the sidelines like “the greatest generation” did for a year and a half while “Europe was under darkness.”

The former Pennsylvania senator described Americans as a “hopeful people,” easily susceptible to ignoring a growing problem.

“We think, well, you know, it’ll get better. Yeah, he’s a nice guy. I mean, it won’t be near as bad as what we think. This will be okay. I mean, yeah, maybe he’s not the best guy after a while. After a while you find out some things about this guy over in Europe who’s not so good of a guy after all, but ya know what, why do we need to be involved? We’ll just take care of our own problems,” he said.

Asked Monday if he was likening the president to Hitler, he responded, “No, of course not.”

“There is no anti-woman move whatsoever," the Republican congresswoman from Minnesota said on CNN's "State of the Union." "The Republican Party is extremely pro-woman.”

If anything is anti-women, Bachmann suggested, it's President Barack Obama's health care policies, which she described as his "Achilles' heel" during the 2012 presidential election.

“It is wildly unpopular … his signature piece of legislation," Bachmann said, citing what she said would be high costs that would hurt Americans.

Can anyone offer me a word stronger than "delusional" to apply to statements like these?

...if all your holiday clothing is just too nice, a wide and possibly itchy selection of ugly Christmas wear is just a click or two away at e-tailers like uglysweaterstore.com, myuglychristmassweater.com, buyuglysweaters.com, and uglychristmassweaterparty.com, the latter operated by “Team Ugly,” a trio of twenty-something guys from Crown Point, Indiana—Brian Miller, Adam Paulson, and the aptly-named Kevin Wool—who purchase sweaters from thrift shops and re-sell them on their site, typically for $20-25 each.

You'd think they would have learned from 2008. Barack Obama ran circles around the vaunted Clinton machine because his team understood how the Internet works.

Republicans still haven't figured out that the Cold War is over, Reagan is dead, and the media rules have changed. They're running on an outdated playbook that really only appeals to a bunch of people who can't accept change.

Yep. Used to be that they could call up a news manager and "persuade" them to cut speech clips to avoid such statements. Then when the word started getting around about what he'd said, the response would be "I didn't say that, and even if I did, you can't prove it!"

Now? Everybody and their uncle has a cellphone, most of which come standard with megapixel digital cameras that pull double duty as crude video cameras, meaning even if the press tries to bury these sorts of statements, somebody has them recorded and on Youtube within an hour of the speech's ending.

My mother might as well not have a cellphone. The building she works in has the ability to somehow drain a cellphone battery just by being within it, my guess being trying to find or maintain a connection for hours at a time. And even when it's on, she has the rather frustrating tendency not to notice it's ringing.

Rick Santorum NEVER used the world Hitler nor did he state: "Obama is as bad as Hitler" , therefore Rick Santorum never compared Obama to Hitler.

No major right wing blogger/commentator has ever DIRECTLY called Obama the N word, therefore they're not "racist".

The lawmakers in Virginia and Texas have never directly stated: "We are against female reproductive rights", therefore they are not "anti-women".

See how it works?

Given the ultra-nationalism, fervent movement toward cultural purity, and support for persecution of gays and non-Christians, and relegation of women to second-class citizenship, I think that Mr. Santorum really needs to re-examine which party more closely resembles the 1920s NSDAP.

And this is before I include the fact that they welcome avowed white nationalists, holocaust deniers, and conspiracy theorists into their ranks with open arms now.

You missed one: Demonization of "others," from illegal immigrants, to "liberals," to "sluts" who think they have any right to their own body.

If I had the inclination to do the Google fu it would probably pretty easy to dig up marketing studies from pharma that show this is no winner for them. If there was money to be made with it, it's a sure bet there would have been one on the market a couple of decades ago. I remember waaay back that there was talk about it but the response was a resounding "meh." Men simply don't have the same motivation and women wouldn't trust them with that responsibility anyway.

Yes I remember seeing something about it on TV. They still have not found a sure fire way to do it to men in a non permanent way. But there is still money going towards research. Not a ton of money but it is being researched. And they don't expected to be that trusted or popular if it comes to the market.

It's amazing to me to see how these people's minds work. They believe that because they've never actually DIRECTLY SAID the things they are being accused of saying, that means they have never said them at all.

That is the core of the dog-whistle tactic.

"This little atheist bully, with the help of the grammatically-challenged Freedom From Religion Foundation (the Constitution guarantees freedom “of” religion, not freedom “from” religion), got a prayer banner pulled off the wall of a Rhode Island high school, a banner that had not been bothering anybody since it was first put up in 1963.

The banner was, in fact, a gift to the school from its first graduating class. So much for history and tradition and honoring the generosity and thoughtfulness of earlier generations of students.

News flash for Jessica and the FFRF: the Constitution hasn’t changed since 1963. "

This makes me think of "writing your congressman/senator" about issues.

I've done so a few times to my Republican representatives about stances on economics/religion/sex and so on. (three times).

What I've found (they do seem to reply eventually) is that all they respond with is a written restatement of what I was being critical of or asking for a clarification on. Any questions I have posed have been completely ignored.

I don't know if they read these or just have a staffer churn out boiler plate replies of their speeches, but I doubt writing politicians makes any difference to anything.

Santorum is nearly as much of an undisciplined loose cannon as Gingrich. Every day or two he says something outrageous, usually about abortion, contraception, women's rights in general, or Obama's failure to be a sufficiently Christian president. His choice of words is less bombastic than Gingrich, and his sweater vest, one wife, and 7 kids make him seem safer, less loathsome than Gingrich. I mean, I think Newt only professes belief in any religion at all out of political expediency. Cafeteria Catholics are certainly the norm (thank god), but usually not in the cold and calculating way.

re: #173 PT Barnum

Having been married to a catholic, I can tell you that this is pretty true of the current generation. The Pope isn't what he used to be.

I was raised Catholic and even did a few years at Catholic school. Nobody paid attention to whatever rules the Vatican would dream up. The church was more of a community bonding tool than a spiritual center.

I was adopted into a Catholic family..I never did fit in very well.

My Dad once told me I was Catholic, never brought it up again. That was the extent of my exposure to the Church.

Modeling the Ward Cleaver collection.

Ward always looked quite nicely put together. But then again, Hugh Beaumont was a handsome man, and it was a fashionable era.

Remember: He still insists he said BLAH people...

IMO, What an incredible A___e.

No, 'plives'. He says he said 'plives'.

Someone, here or on ABL was fairly sure he actually said "to blave".

Rick Santorum going for the Larouche voters.

I don't even know how you would do that. I can't actually figure out what the LaRouche people believe.

re: #19 reuven

Do you think any of Santorum's recent rise in the polls and primaries has been from Democrats picking who they feel is the "least electable"? (Or is this just wishful thinking on my part?)

You mean there's been some manipulation going on? I'm sure people are trying, but I don't think you could see this much bounce to someone that crazy if he wasn't tapping something...somehow...

re: #63 The Yankee

I wonder what the church is going to think about the male version of the pill when that ever comes out.

Same thing they think about condoms and vasectomies now, one presumes.

The Church's stance on contraception is bad more for being straight across the board with no common sense applied, than for being hypocritical.

Slaves at the root of the fortune that created Richard Dawkins' family estate

The Telegraph: Bringing you the most current news from 300 years ago.

That's...interesting. For the Dawkins family, that is.

(As if it's not bad enough that people tell me their family histories on airplanes, now the Telegraph has to do it on behalf of random writers?)

After a while you find out some things about this guy over in Europe who’s not so good of a guy after all

Rick hates the Pope!

The likes of Rick were insisting that the guy in Europe was no big deal right up until we were actually deploying.

My dad and mom took us to a Presbyterian minister's new church the minister founded in the 1970's. Lots of preaching about Peace and community building. Part and parcel of a type of Hippie idealism that now seems dated, if not jaundiced. Definitely closer to Quaker Friends than today's Evangelicals..

This. Many modern Catholics select their own way of practicing, and focus on what they consider important. Then they say things like, "Well, I try."

Newt selects what he considers expedient for Newt, and then acts like he's a great Catholic, better than you.

A not-so-random biologist, actually. I think writing and curmudgeonly atheism are just side hobbies for him.

Anyway, here's his take on the phone interview...

The Sins of the Fathers

I’d scarcely had time to re-open my lecture notes when he rang back: “Darwinian natural selection has a lot to do with genes, do you agree?” Of course I agreed. “Well, some people might suggest that you could have inherited a gene for supporting slavery from Henry Dawkins.”

“You obviously need a genetics lesson,” I replied. Henry Dawkins was my great great great great great grandfather, so approximately one in 128 of my genes are inherited from him (that’s the correct figure; in the heat of the moment on the phone, I got it wrong by a couple of powers of two).

Another day, another spin-doctored clarification on some ignorant, inflammatory comment that Team Santorum made about Obama and all Americans who do not share his extreme evangelical view of society.
