Indiana Lawmaker Thinks Girl Scouts Are ‘Tactical Arm of Planned Parenthood’

The Republican war on Planned Parenthood takes turn into bizarre

The Girl Scouts are a tactical arm of Planned Parenthood? You could have fooled me — and millions of other families who have had their kids go through the Girl Scout programs over the decades since it was founded.

Yet, Indiana Republican, Rep. Bob Morris of Fort Wayne, claims to have come upon the links between Planned Parenthood and the Scouts:

A lawmaker has sent a letter to fellow Republican members of the Indiana House saying he will not support a resolution celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts because he believes it is a “radicalized organization” that supports abortion and promotes homosexuality.

In a letter obtained by The Journal-Gazette of Fort Wayne on Monday, Rep. Bob Morris of Fort Wayne said he did some research on the Internet and found allegations that the Girl Scouts are a tactical arm of Planned Parenthood, allow transgender females to join and encourage sex.

“After talking to some well-informed constituents, I did a small amount of web-based research, and what I found is disturbing,” Morris wrote in his letter, which also accused the group of promoting “homosexual lifestyles.”

Morris sent the letter to House Republicans on Saturday.

Ashley Sharp, spokeswoman for the Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana, said Monday a statement on the group’s website states that it leaves sex and reproduction questions to parents. The group accepts transgender youth on a case-by-case basis.

The full text of Morris’ statement is here.

Among his more outlandish claims:

Nonetheless, abundant evidence proves that the agenda of Planned Parenthood includes sexualizing young girls through the Girl Scouts, which is quickly becoming a tactical arm of Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood instructional series and pamphlets are part of the core curriculum at GSA training seminars. Denver Auxiliary Bishop James D. Conley of Denver last year warned parents that ‘membership in the Girl Scouts could carry the danger of making their daughters more receptive to the pro-abortion agenda.’

A Girl Scouts of America training program last year used the Planned Parenthood sex education pamphlet ‘Happy, Healthy, and Hot.’ The pamphlet instructs young girls not to think of sex as ‘just about vaginal or anal intercourse.’

Morris did “a small amount of web-based research,” which probably consisted of following some conspiracy minded right wing nutter who finds conspiracies behind every door and every shadow.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that he’s pushing the agenda of Stand for the Family (hosted by Family Watch International) and similar type groups, which think that the UN is undermining family structures and that the Girl Scouts are deeply involved in the sexualization of women. Sharon Slater, who runs both Stand for the Family and Family Watch International, is behind many of these claims.

What actual empirical evidence is there that Girl Scouts are sexualizing women? The Girl Scouts are about empowerment, education, and improving self esteem.

Yet, this Representative and these groups are trying to find links between the Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood? Because there is a possibility that Girl Scouts used health care materials prepared by Planned Parenthood?

This is the state of the GOP today?

It’s bordering on insanity.

UPDATE:
Here’s a Washington Times article where they try to link Planned Parenthood with the Girl Scouts, and many of the same names and claims appear.

 Frank says:

Throwing objects such as this are capable of damaging expensive musical equipment and musicians. Any more of this and there will be no more music. -- FZ, Autumn 1981 at Northrup auditorium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After someone threw a plunger on stage about two-thirds of the way through the show, he stopped the band with a wave of his hand speaking in the general direction that the dangerous object was thrown, while holding it in his hand. This did not prove to be an amusing act and Franks mood hardened. - It was, however, an evening of excellent, serious musicianship around the release of 'Shut up and play your guitar'
