Right Wing Journalism: How Many Times Did Rachel Maddow Say the ‘V’ Word?

Beyond parody
Wingnuts • Views: 37,125

When right wing ideologues pretend to be journalists, you end up with a weird hybrid of news and social conservative talking points like Tucker Carlson’s Daily Caller.

Today, the Daily Caller’s Jeff Poor is very very concerned about Rachel Maddow’s overuse of the filthy word “vagina.”

He’s so upset he had to count every time she said it.

Last week, Republican Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell backed off provisions in a bill that may have required women to undergo a “transvaginal ultrasound” if they chose to have an abortion.

Opponents of those provisions may have MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow to thank for helping to scuttle them.

During the episodes of “The Rachel Maddow Show” that aired between February 14 and February 24, Maddow repeatedly attacked the bill, uttering the words “vaginal” or “vagina” 58 times.

Here’s the daily tally:

February 14 - 4
February 15 - 9
February 16 - 2
February 17 - 0
February 20 - 5
February 21 - 1
February 22 - 14
February 23 - 5
February 24 - 18
TOTAL: 58

This is what passes for journalism in the wacky world of the wingnut.

Vagina.

Good. I hope she keeps talking about vaginas, considering all the hateful ultrasound legislation being attempted by the GOP.

My question is: did he actually count correctly? That would be something of an accomplishment in the modern right-wing echo chamber.

13 Bulworth  Mon, Feb 27, 2012 10:14:56am

I hope someone from Daily Caller counts the number of vagina mentions in this vagina thread about vaginas.

26 Lidane  Mon, Feb 27, 2012 10:17:57am

re: #14 Varek Raith

Because the penis is evil.

To combat this evil, we need legislation denying insurance coverage for both Cialis and Viagra.

Also, we need to rein in all that evil, so Viagra and Cialis will only be available to married men with wives of child-bearing age, and a mandatory prostate exam, without exception, will be given before any prescriptions are given, so that the men will know what they are getting into.

27 Romantic Heretic  Mon, Feb 27, 2012 10:18:24am

Well, conservatism is all about masculinity. Vagina is about femininity.

Therefore speaking about vaginas is something liberals do, which means they are not masculine, and thus less than conservatives.

Things you simply can't make up. Reporting on the fact that it's Republicans who keep attempting to legislate away a woman's right to control their own body and referring to the scientific name for part of the reproductive system means that the person reporting (in this case Maddow) is somehow fixated on the matter.

Want to get Maddow off the vagina fixation? The GOP should stop trying to eliminate the right to abortion and to force all manner of restrictions on reproductive rights - even the wholesale roll back of birth control access/rights.

Those same people who want to stick stuff inside of one (and a few of the folks who have one) are scared of vaginas, so they have to find ways to control them.

Va-jay-jay is the best for saying in silly voices, too.

My wife has a piece of sculpture she made back in her artist days, which, well, I call it the 'va-jay-jay'.

I made a sculpture once of a spiral that begins as a penis and ends as a vagina. It was inspired by the Japanese Enso and the ouroborus.

True story: when I was teaching middle school social studies to English language learners, I asked one little girl where the Pilgrims had intended to go, before ending up at Plimoth.

She said, "The Vagina Colony!" and then heard herself and turned bright pink.

I said, "YES. The VIRGINIA colony! Very GOOD!" or something inane like that.

The importance of the Vagina Colony in U.S. history cannot be overstated.

Well as a native Virginian, I do remember much being made of the first women going to Jamestown. And I still chuckle about the time the professor was talking about voting slogans and I said oh what about "Vote early, vote often." Great American history prof too, later used him as a reference when I transfered from community college to GMU.

Of course the whole point is to discourage conservatives and patriots from joining the military....Liberals hated that fact that the all-volunteer military primarily attracted conservatives.....now, I would try to discourage my son from enlisting if he wanted to....if that’s the crap they have to deal with.

I hope I'm not whistling past the graveyard here, but I really think the religious right's dominance of the GOP will soon have run its course.

It may take the apocalyptic defeat served up by a Santorum candidacy to do it, but the day is coming. More and more actual people are starting to realize that the religious right's trumped up televangelist leaders are not really interested in winning except as a secondary objective, a by-product of their real objectives. They may actually have an incentive not to seek real victory or political power the same way, say, Machiavelli or Franklin Roosevelt did. They play the political game not for power and office but for the high profile their participation brings them. It is essentially part of their marketing strategy for the vast range of consumer media goods they sell, from their half-baked pidgin theology to home-schooling supplies, health supplements, and, of course, their endless series of "what's wrong with America" and "God wants your money" books and DVDs.

I recently found out that my Captain in the Corps is gay. Of course, then, we didn't know. he was an effective leader, smart manager, and overall someone to look up to. I think no different of him now than I did then. We are brothers. Gay, Straight, black, white, Latino, Asian American.....whatever. Once I put that EGL on, I became a Marine, and for life, just like the guy in that picture. I don't care who he loves, who he has sex with, or whether he wears women's underware. We are Marines. That is all. Semper Fi.

---

Can anyone on this message board look BEYOND the picture? Here is a man who sacrificed his life for his country and all he gets is hatred because he is kissing the person that he loves? Do you call yourself a true patriot if you hate on something fighting for YOU? This man is probably a loving person and a good friend. This is the 21st century, when can you accept that accept that there are people who are different from you? How are they affecting your life, really? No one forced you to read this article or look at the picture. They are not imposing their lifestyle on you, you are letting it impose on you. Take a chill pill and let it go! Let others have their happiness and instead work on finding your own happiness.

168 simoom  Mon, Feb 27, 2012 11:14:44am

Apparently the war on secular governance is in full swing in my state:
[Link: www.npr.org...]

New Hampshire, one of the least religious states in the nation, has become the latest front in the political battle over contraception. State GOP leaders oppose the new federal rule compelling insurers to provide birth control to employees of religious organizations. They want to change a 12-year-old state law that requires contraceptive coverage under insurers' prescription drug policies.

It's hard to miss the politics fueling state House Speaker William O'Brien's push to carve out a religious exemption from the contraception mandate.

"The Obama administration is trying to divide this country and to divide women against Catholics," O'Brien said. "The amendment before you, however, is a way of guaranteeing religious freedom by ensuring that we are not forcing employers to purchase health care coverage that violates their belief."

No Initial Outcry

New Hampshire has required contraceptive coverage in all prescription drug plans since 2000. The law was passed by a Republican Legislature and signed by a Democratic governor. Nobody at the time, it seems, saw the policy as a blow against religious liberty.

Democratic state Rep. Terie Norelli, who co-sponsored the law, said that objection never came up.

"There was no discussion whatsoever — I even went back and looked at the history from the bill," she said. "There was not one comment about religious freedoms."

It wasn't just lawmakers who were silent; religious leaders were, too.

"I wasn't here back in 1999," said Diane Murphy Quinlan, chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Manchester, "and we didn't have a full-time lobbyist in the Legislature. It's possible that it was missed."

...

The diocese helped draft the bill, which would free any employer, be it an auto repair shop or a metaphysical bookstore, with a religious objection to birth control.

Ugg.

172 CuriousLurker  Mon, Feb 27, 2012 11:16:41am

Dammit, now every time I see Virginia I think it says vagina.

I think they're preoccupied for a few reasons. As HH said the other night, all life comes from women. Sure, sperm is required, but aside from that a man's presence isn't. The womb is of the utmost importance, and the vagina is the door.

If (God forbid) all the males in the world ceased to exist right this minute, the world could be repopulated—even if there were no sperm banks. there would be pregnant women who would give birth to males and females.

OTOH, if (God forbid) all the females in the world ceased to exist right this minute, men would be doomed—none have a uterus therefore there could be no pregnancies. No pregnancies = no more females = eventual extinction.

Then there's the other "problem": A pregnant woman is always 100% sure that the child in her belly is 100% hers. A man can never be 100% sure, at least not unless he's had complete control over the woman's every movement 24/7 and can be sure that no other male has had access to her (vagina) for even a few seconds.

I think that terrifies some men, hence the desire to control women's behavior & reproductive choices. It also explains the severe punishments meted out in many cultures to women who step out of line.

...McClusky released the results of a nine-day online poll of FRC Action's grassroots activists about whom they want to be the GOP presidential nominee. In all, 29,495 supporters voted. The results are below:

Santorum: 22,409 (76 percent)

Gingrich: 2,779 (9 percent)

Paul: 2,089 (7 percent)

Romney: 1,445 (5 percent)

Other: 737 (2 percent)

The online straw poll results slightly exceed the almost 75 percent of the vote that Senator Santorum received at last month's Texas meeting of 150 evangelical leaders.

The whole thing has been an example of what happens when you have the party leadership and the party base engaged in a cold war with each other. You get an "inevitable" candidate that keeps failing to seal the deal because the latest "rival" succeeds in spoiling one primary after another. If Frothy wins Michigan tomorrow night, then that pretty much drives a stake through Willard's campaign, because a candidate that can't win his own home turf is toxic.

Wasn't just sat down, but told in no uncertain terms that if he pulled a stunt like that again, not even his successes as a tank commander would save his ass from a court martial. Enemies of Science Can Stop Gloating About the Fast Neutrinos

Some commentators, such as Charles Krauthammer, reported that physicists were upset, even devastated by this result and reluctant to accept the idea because it violated special relativity and they revere Einstein.

This is hardly the case. Scientists were skeptical because it was a single, unconfirmed result that involved complicated equipment and indirect measurements. Indeed, the latest press release from CERN suggests some mechanical glitches that might have fooled the physicists into thinking they’d detected faster-than-light travel. A mistake is what most physicists suspected all along:

Babeu joined the Massachusetts National Guard as a 21-year-old. He started his service as a Private/E-2 and rose through the ranks to Major in the Arizona Army National Guard. During his tenure he served a tour in Iraq and spent 17 months deployed in Arizona as a Commander with Operation Jump Start (Southwest Border Mission). From 2006 to 2007, Babeu spent 17 months as commander of Task Force Yuma supervising 700 soldiers, where they supported the United States Border Patrol to achieve operational control and reduce illegal immigration. Babeu retired in September 2010 after 20 years of service.

Someone go find a Derp-to-English translator. This makes no goddamn sense:

Is this some sort of talking point casseole, just tossing every issue into the pot and hoping it turns out okay?

Good fucking question. I always heard that the whole housing burst was because so many minority folks got mortgages that they couldn't afford, then they all defaulted at the same time, killing the market. And that the only reason that happened was due to a decades old law that Democrats had put into place, followed by their refusal to let Bush fix the whole thing in '05...stop me if any of this is sounding familiar.

It's happy gay people they can't stand. Miserable gay people who have to repress that side of themselves, or who have to deny it to pursue their careers, that makes them feel good.

Yeah, the same dipshits who are now popping a gasket over pictures of gay and lesbian soldiers and sailors kissing in public are the ones who predicted doomsday scenarios when DADT was being dismantled, screaming "It'll tear the military apart!"

The one comment is right, most of those wingnuts I've heard sounding off about reinstating DADT and having a rage-gasm right now generally didn't serve, probably wouldn't have lasted long had they done so, and overall are piss poor armchair generals at that.

Nothing pisses me off more than RWNJs who use "support the troops" as a bludgeon in public discourse, but prove that they're hypocrites when the troops aren't white, male, and straight.

I forgot to mention that that image did in fact make me nauseous - in fact I had to scroll past it quickly.

I really begin to wonder what we are defending anymore... perversion?

This country has changed so drastically in my lifetime I can barely recognize it. Our federal government has gone insane... they ratchet up both the immorality (legalized, protected immorality) and the police state powers (taking our rights to privacy, to free speech - the right to be left alone) at the same time.

What the hell is going on?

I begin to wonder if there really is some overarching plan to destroy all that was good in this country.

It's an effort on the part of the GOP to try to shed Bush's utter fuckup of a presidency by now trying to rewrite history. Most folks can't even remember what gas cost this time last year, so if you tell them that gas was "expensive" in October '08, they'll likely nod along and say "So that's why so many folks got foreclosed on."

Pretty much the only disagreement they have with "creeping sharia" is that it's the wrong theology, not that they disagree with forcing religious laws on folks. After all, it's about what's "moral" and "saving America's soul."
