The GOP’s Slut-Shaming Ultrasound Craze Spreads to Alabama

Right wing social engineering

The GOP’s uterus inspection device

Here we go again.

Now the Republican Party’s slut-shaming craze has spread to Alabama, with yet another uterus inspection bill requiring women seeking abortions to undergo trans-vaginal ultrasounds.

And notice that State Sen. Clay Scofield openly admits there’s no medical reason whatsoever; the only reason for this insane caveman law is to stop abortion. Pure right wing social engineering.

When a woman in Alabama seeks an abortion procedure, she already has to sign that her doctor has performed an ultrasound and that she either viewed the ultrasound image or rejected seeing it. But state Sen. Clay Scofield (R) is pushing SB 12, a bill in the Alabama legislature that would mandate the physician “to perform an ultrasound, provide verbal explanation of the ultrasound, and display the images to the pregnant woman before performing an abortion.” The physician could also require the woman to submit to a transvaginal ultrasound — “in which a probe is inserted into the vagina, and then moved around until an ultrasound image is produced” — if she or he determines it necessary.

A Senate committee voted 4-1 on Friday to approve the measure, and the state Senate is expected to vote on it early this week. Even though studies have proven that viewing an ultrasound does not lead women to not have abortions, the bill’s sponsor says he hopes it will:

Scofield said he hopes that, if signed into law, his bill will stop some abortions. Though the bill states a woman can look away from the ultrasound image, Scofield wants her to see it.

“So she sees that this is not just a clump of cells as she is told,” he said. “She will see the shape of the infant. And hopefully, she will choose to keep the child.”

The bill wouldn’t require an ultrasound if an abortion is necessary to save a woman’s life, but it does not allow the victims of sexual assault to opt out of viewing the ultrasound.

Truly a first in all the bills that have been put up, a politician coming out to admit that it's nothing more than an effort to traumatize women in the name of an ideology.

I'll have to admit that I'm a bit surprised that this has become the current nationwide focus of the anti-choice crowd. It seems like a relatively risky issue to pursue. I suppose those in charge just don't care anymore about putting up even a paper-thin facade.

It's an election-year ballroom blitz, a last-ditch effort to cram this shit through before the voters to the polls in November and defang the Republican majorities they put into place in '10 on the insistence that they would be all about "jobs."

I'll make a rash prediction: The religious right is at the height of its power just now, but it will collapse with breathtaking speed after this election year. Within a few years no politician with serious electoral aspirations outside the hard-core Bible belt will willingly admit to having consorted with the likes of Bryan Fischer and David Barton. A close analogy would be the amazing collapse of the "Second" Ku Klux Klan in the late 20s. This organization went from millions of members and complete control of several states in 1925 to a marginalized laughingstock by 1929.

They might have if they thought there was a chance they'd hold onto power after November. But in many cases, they've not only failed to create new jobs, they've failed miserably just to keep the jobs that are there from disappearing. So they're now trying to get such bills made law so that, if they do lose their majorities after November, they can at least ensure that it will be damn near impossible to repeal them.

Add Pennsylvania the list.
The bill doesn't mandate transvaginal ultrasound but does require determination of gestational age which can only be done with a transvaginal ultrasound in the early stages.

Here's how Republican Todd Rock, one of the co-sponsors responded:

"I guess it is a little more invasive, but the idea is to take measurements to determine the gestational age, and you have to do it this way to get that kind of detail," Rock said of the transvaginal method. "I don't think that's much to ask if the life of a baby is hanging in the balance."

Wouldn't it make sense to simply include basic education on fetal development in school biology curricula so young women are aware of what is going on inside their bodies and don't need a sound poked up them to make the point?

Of course not, because this is not about education. it is about getting women to change their minds about an abortion no matter what it takes.

They generally are coordinated because they're usually being directed by the same organizations. ALEC's been one of the big movers and shakers, sending out various templates and instruction books on various subjects, giving GOP their marching orders on how to write bills to effect the sort of "change" they want.

Ultimately, the social engineering aspect of things will backfire on those states that show themselves indifferent to equal rights for women (as well as for gays), and position themselves as anti-education and anti-science. These states will experience an emigration of the educated, upwardly mobile strata of society. A de facto partition of the Union into an industrialized, educated, globally engaged North and a backward, inward looking, South which can hope, at best, to be a cheap labour export platform for Northern (and Chinese) goods.

They have 2 bills pending - one mandating ultrasound and one establishing structural criteria for the clinics (8 ft wide hallways vs the current 5 ft). All in the name of women's safety.
But just when you thought it couldn't get more offensive, the bills were referred to and reported out of the Agriculture Committee. Agriculture! Now we're farm animals.
But the reason for the Agriculture Committee was strategic:

The Agriculture Committee is dominated by downstate conservatives, and by assigning the bills there Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan assured the measures would be heard by sympathetic legislators.

At one point he points out some of his fellow waiters and tells us that they are so young they don't know what "going Dutch" means. I mentioned that I used to work in the Netherlands and they consider that phrase as an insult. He then says "well since there aren't many Dutch in Houston, we should call it 'going Jewish'". re: #77 Charles Johnson

The current list of states where they're promoting these caveman laws, as far as I know: Virginia, Alabama, N. Carolina, Illinois, Texas, Arizona, Florida, Kansas, and Pennsylvania.

Here in Wisconsin too..

SB 306 is deceptively called the Coercion and Webcam Abortion Prevention Bill and contains three main components. The first component requires doctors to speak alone and in person with a woman seeking an abortion and to inform her of services for victims of domestic abuse if they believe she’s being coerced into seeking an abortion. Current Wisconsin law has a lengthy script physicians must cover with patients 24 hours prior to the procedure but it does not specify that conversation happen “face-to-face.”

The bill also eliminates the possibility of “webcam” abortions by requiring doctors examine patients in person before prescribing abortion-inducing drugs like mifepristone. In neighboring states like Iowa and Minnesota, patients living in rural areas are able to have mifepristone prescribed via online video conference. This would not be an option for women living in rural Wisconsin.

Finally, the bill requires a woman return to an abortion clinic for a follow-up visit 12 to 18 days after being given the drug. Women who take mifepristone already have a follow-up visit, but most see their primary care physician for that follow-up. This bill forces women to have that follow-up visit at an abortion clinic, putting yet another unnecessary burden on the backs of women trying to access health care services.

The bill now moves to the Assembly before heading to Gov. Scott Walker’s desk where he is expected to sign it.

Plus they are attacking women economically in Wisconsin

Equal Pay Enforcement Act On Verge Of Being Repealed By Wisconsin Republicans

In 2009, the Wisconsin legislature made it easier for victims of wage discrimination to have their day in court. That law is now on the verge of repeal.

The Equal Pay Enforcement Act was meant to deter employers from discriminating by giving workers more avenues to press charges. Among other provisions, it allows individuals to plead their cases in the less costly, more accessible state circuit court system, rather than just in federal court.

In November, the state Senate approved (SB 202) rolling back this provision. On Wednesday, the Assembly did the same. Both were party-line votes. The legislation is now in the hands of Gov. Scott Walker (R). His office did not return a request for comment on whether the governor would sign it.

Not to mention the women who lost Badgercare. The attacks are so many here I lose count.

It is ALL about religious superstitions about embryos and zygotes. No legislation insists a male endure a urethral probe to demonstrate how his penile cavities function before prescribing Viagra. No legislation insists you have a scraping from a suspicious mole tested for cancer before having it removed in its entirety. The “informed patient” bit is a smokescreen for tyrants who want to use government force to impose their superstitious opinions about human life onto other citizens.
