The Michigan-Arizona Primaries Open Thread

Romney and Santorum battle for the delegates
Politics • Views: 40,716

Here’s an open thread to keep up on news from the Republican primaries taking place in Michigan and Arizona.

Arizona’s probably going to go for Mitt Romney; he’s way ahead of Rick “Torquemada Jr.” Santorum there. But Michigan’s going down to the wire…

Meanwhile, here’s a video clip of President Obama’s rousing speech to the UAW:

I hope Rick Santorum wins the primary, if Romney wins the primary it'll be 2008 all over again where the GOP base gets to tel themselves that they could have won if only they'd been backing someone less liberal....

I predict a win by Homer Simpson.

The wingnuts have been spouting the same nonsense since at least Dole, maybe longer. Remember, even George "Never heard of him" Bush is no longer considered a "real Republican" by the same teabaggers who were curiously quiet during his tenure, and has even been branded a soshulest by wingnut princess Michele Bachmann.

Meet The MI Dems Who Are Subverting The GOP Primary … By Voting In It

“The state of Michigan allows for us to cross over like this, so it’s not like it’s voter fraud,” said Lisa Viviano, a Democrat from Battle Creek. She crossed over and voted Santorum.

“I truly see it as a means to help re-elect our president and save our country from the true danger it would be put in by the extremists being offered up by the GOP,” she said. “Brokered convention? Bring it on! I want to see Obama win by an even larger margin than he did in 2008.”

Rachael Siemen of Port Huron crossed over for the first time, and also voted for Santorum.

“If their most crucial candidate quality is the ability to beat Obama then that’s a dirty trick being played on the American people,” she said of her vote. “They should try to use some ingenuity to come up with some new ideas.”

Ken Kolk was at one time the treasurer for his local Republican Party in the Wayland Township area. But now he’s a Democrat voting for Santorum, who he said is the weakest potential candidate for a Republican Party that that lost him years ago.

“When the religious right took over I left the party and became an independent, then a Democrat,” he said.

“Remember Michigan has a tradition of crapping on the presumed nominees and for us Romney has three strikes against him,” Kolk said.

Traditional values I can support.

As someone who votes Democrat, what you say right there is just about the only reason I would want to see Mittens win the nomination. So these fools can keep on thinking they need to move further to the right and move their dumb asses right out of political relevancy. Then maybe, we can restart the Republican party with more moderate, sane people.

There's more than enough wrong with Santorum for them to find excuses and not realize they need to be more center than right. More than likely they'll just say "He shouldn't have talked about how we really feel about controversial ideas. We need to keep that stuff quiet until we actually win the election."

Since when did you believe the modern day GOP base is capable of either?

The geezers have been out in force in Michigan. More people over 65 have voted so far then under 45. This might help Romney since they may have fond memories of his father.

Some issues, like abortion, will probably be debated just as fiercely 100 years from now as they are today. Give it 20, maybe 30 years though, and people with Santorum-like stances on things like gay rights and- dear God- birth control will be considered too far out of the mainstream to even compete for major office. Here's something we'll no doubt hear a lot of bitching from wingnuts about come tomorrow:

NFL to open season on a Wednesday night to avoid Obama speech

The NFL will begin its 2012 NFL season on a Wednesday night in order to avoid conflicting with President Obama's nominating speech at the Democratic National Convention.

Roger Goodell made the announcement that the regular season will begin Sept. 5, one day earlier than the traditional start on the first Thursday of the month. The defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants will host the opener.

It will be the league's first Wednesday game since 1948.

Here's hoping Santorum wins big, Obama will have an easier time kicking his ass in the general election. Advocating theocracy instead of democracy seems to only appeal to about 29% of registered Republicans (less if the question is framed more diplomatically) and only about 7% of the total registered voting electorate as a whole.

The longer the GOP stays focused on earning the votes of their ever shrinking base while eschewing and even alienating the moderate and independent voters the better.

Feds Seize Cocaine Jesus

The statue was confiscated at a Texas border crossing after a drug-sniffing dog alerted to it during an inspection of a vehicle driven by a Mexican woman. The woman later told agents that she was paid $80 by a man who wanted the statue delivered to him at a Laredo bus station.
.......
...the 61-year-old Garcia-Cordova, who is a legal permanent U.S. resident, initially acknowledged that Cocaine Jesus was his, but then claimed he was only helping to smuggle the statue on the behalf of a man known only by the nickname 'La Arana,' or The Spider. Wild Man Don Wildmon, too. Formerly purveyor of Satanic Panic anti-rock music hysteria, he later turned his sanctified sights on an even more sinister target:

On June 6, 1988, Donald Wildmon, head of the American Family Association (AFA), alleged that "The Littlest Tramp" depicted cocaine use, instigating a media frenzy. Concerning Bakshi's involvement with Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures, the AFA claimed that CBS "intentionally hired a known pornographer to do a cartoon for children, and then allowed him to insert a scene in which the cartoon hero is shown sniffing cocaine." Bakshi responded, "You could pick a still out of Lady and the Tramp and get the same impression. Fritz the Cat wasn't pornography. It was social commentary. This all smacks of burning books and the Third Reich. It smacks of McCarthyism. I'm not going to get into who sniffs what. This is lunacy!" [8]

Bakshi defended the episode, saying, "I despise drugs. I would be out of my mind to show a cartoon character snorting cocaine in a cartoon.",[14] and stating that Wildmon had interpreted the scene out of context.[15] "Mighty Mouse was happy after smelling the flowers because it helped him remember the little girl who sold it to him fondly. But even if you're right, their accusations become part of the air we breathe. That's why I cut the scene. I can't have children wondering if Mighty Mouse is using cocaine." On CBS's order, Klein removed the sequence from the master broadcast footage.

Wildmon claimed that the edits were "a de facto admission that, indeed, Mighty Mouse was snorting cocaine".[8] Bakshi agreed to the removal of the offending 3½ seconds from future airings of the episode because of his concern that the controversy might lead children to believe that what Wildmon was saying was true. Wildmon's group then demanded the removal of Bakshi, but, on July 25, 1988, CBS released a statement in support of him.[16]

He was already in the process of losing his lead when he said those, so I don't really think we can blame his loss on them. Reality is that he peaked a couple weeks ago, before the whole contraception/abortion business got into full swing, and his "Not Romney" credentials were no match for the sheer lunacy that he was spewing.

Romney needs to win Ohio, because he is losing badly everywhere else on Super Tuesday, except in Virginia, and that's only because Newt and Frothy aren't on the ballot there.

Good point, he should have been able to put Santorum away with a double-digit win on his home turf and instead couldn't do better than 41% of the vote. He'll walk away patting himself on the back for his win, but if he's really looking at the sort of long odds suggested for Super Tuesday, then we might see this thing go to the convention.

I really do think that's the GOP's worst nightmare, getting the convention with no one candidate holding enough delegates to win outright.

It's been pointed out here before that there's been no modern brokered convention, as usually by the time things get to the convention, the nomination has been sewn up by one candidate or another for months. So we could be seeing history this fall, of a very painful variety for the GOP.

The starter tapes are just for tearing down the old you by showing you the complete pointlessness of your life to you. Later in the series the tapes are meant to help to rebuild a new, more complacent, easier led, and overall more Republican you. Which of course is truly the ultimate aim of this inspirational series to make you a happy and mindless Republican voter who is willing...no..eager to vote against his own best interests.

Santorum also would have won if Newt had dropped out a couple of weeks back, when it became pretty clear that the not-Romney vote was going heavily toward Santorum, who, if nothing else, has way less personal baggage than Newt.

Newt's ego is way too big, I get it. But, as someone else here just said, Romney is currently limping toward the nod with barely 40% of the national vote. If Newt were out, Santorum would be getting his vote (10-15%) probably 2 to 1, if not more over Romney. Winning his home state will be nice for Newt, but it really doesn't create anything like a realistic path to the nomination for him.

Romney thanks you all very much.

Santorum likes those democrat voters so much, I expect him to go Spector in the next couple of days.
---

Yes, exactly. Santorum is way better than Romney. He may not be perfect, but he isn’t a RINO like Romney.

The problem is that Newt and Santorum are still splitting up the anti-Willard vote.

Now, still, Romney is head and shoulders above Obama. We can NOT afford 4 more years of Obama.
---

If Romney gets the nomination, I’m voting constitution party or the best 3rd party candidate I can find.
---

I must be old school because I believe the Bible is the word of God and our founding fathers believed that too when they drafted our Constitution. Today is further proof that I am in the minority in believing that.

I won’t be falling for it this time....the GOP is dead to me now.

I'm assuming that the early voters tipped the scale.

I don't think the Alaskans are going to go for that, I lived there from 89 to 06 and I can categorically say that they have no interest in becoming part of Canada. There is a sizable portion of the population that wants to secede from the United States and form their own country though, and they probably could given the oil wealth available to them if we didn't militarily contest their secession.

Sounds like one of the better off Michigan counties:

As of the 2010 Census, there were 1,202,362 people, 471,115 households, and 315,175 families residing in the county. The population density as of the 2000 census was 1,369 people per square mile (528/km²). There were 492,006 housing units at an average density of 564 per square mile (218/km²). In 2000, the racial makeup of the county was 82.75% White, 10.11% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 4.14% Asian American, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.84% from other races, and 1.86% from two or more races. 2.43% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. Regarding ancestry, 14.4% were German, 9.0% Irish, 8.5% English, 8.5% Polish, 5.7% Italian and 5.5% American, according to Census 2000. 87.4% spoke only English at home; 2.0% spoke Spanish, 1.3% Syriac (Neo Aramaic) and 1.0% Arabic.

[...]

The Jewish community of metropolitan Detroit, with a population of 72,000, is the 21st largest Jewish community in the nation. This community is concentrated in Oakland County, especially in West Bloomfield, Bloomfield Hills, Farmington Hills, Troy and Huntington Woods.[5]

There were 471,115 households, of which 32.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.20% were married couples living together, 9.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.10% were non-families. 27.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.50% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.09.

[...]

The county's population was spread out in terms of age, with 25.20% of people under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 32.40% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 11.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 95.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $61,907, and the median income for a family was $75,540 (these figures had risen to $62,308 and $79,589 respectively as of a 2009 estimate[6]). Males had a median income of $55,833 versus $35,890 for females. The per capita income for the county was $32,534. About 3.80% of families and 5.50% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.50% of those under age 18 and 6.50% of those age 65 or over.

In 2009, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that non-Hispanic whites (including Arabs and Chaldeans) formed 76.8% of the population; African-Americans, 12.5%; Asian-Americans, 5.7%; and Hispanic or Latino people (of any race), 3.2%.

3.8% of the families below the poverty line is pretty small compared to other well populated surrounding areas.

re: #449 ausador

There is a sizable portion of the population that wants to secede from the United States and form their own country though, and they probably could given the oil wealth available to them if we didn't militarily contest their secession.

Seeing as their State has been a drain on the US budget for as long as they've been a State, I seriously doubt they could make it on their own even with the oil revenue.
