N. Korea Agrees to Suspend Nuclear Activities for US Food Aid

Major breakthrough

This could be huge: N.Korea Agrees to Nuclear Moratorium, IAEA Inspections.

WASHINGTON, Feb 29 (Reuters) - North Korea agreed on Wednesday to stop nuclear tests, uranium enrichment and long-range missile launches, and to allow checks by nuclear inspectors, in an apparent policy shift that paves the way for resuming long-stalled disarmament talks.

The surprise breakthrough, announced simultaneously by the U.S. State Department and North Korea, also includes U.S. food aid for the impoverished state and makes possible the resumption of six-nation nuclear negotiations with Pyongyang. The news followed bilateral diplomatic talks in Beijing last week.

“These are concrete measures that we consider a positive first step toward complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean peninsula in a peaceful manner,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

Analysts cautioned that Pyongyang had backtracked repeatedly on past deals, but the moves by North Korea mark a sharp change in course, at least outwardly, by North Korea’s reclusive leadership after the death in December of veteran leader Kim Jong-il.

Not really - with the death of Kim Jong Il these are encouraging signs. Sure, it could still fall apart, but this is a definite change in tone.

Exactly. We knew with Kim Jong Il what such gestures ultimately don't lead to. Everyone has been wondering how differently his successor will be, and so far it looks promising. Now we must wait to see what comes out of it.

I didn't say that. However if it's the military that is behind the move, then this could be due to absence of Kim Jong Il, and softness of Dracula Jr.

I disagree. The leadership doesn't starve and the population control is Orwellian. Far worse than the USSR. There will be no revolution by the people (and China prefers the status quo just as it does in Syria).

A coup by the generals is equally improbably as they will hang themselves if they allow more liberty.

China could change them but they have no ethics of that sort, and it would be expensive for them with refugees and the like. Even South Korea would have a hard time absorbing the north, worse than Germany did with the east not long ago.

Most awesome post of the day, courtesy of Eric Erickson, in case anyone hasn't seen it yet:

When you have a candidate few people really like, whose support is a mile wide and an inch deep, whose raison d’etre (a 4am fancy word) is fixing an economy that is fixing itself without him, and who only wins his actual, factual home state by three percentage points against a guy no one took seriously only two months ago, there really is little reason for independent voters in the general election to choose him if the economy keeps improving.

Seriously, putting it bluntly, conservatives may not like Barack Obama, but most other people do. And when faced with a guy you like and a guy you don’t like who says he can fix an economy that no longer needs fixing, you’re going to go with the guy you like.

If Republicans in Washington are not panicked and trying desperately to pull Bobby Jindal in the race tomorrow, or someone like him, the party leaders must have a death wish.

I'm trying to feel bad for these people and failing utterly

Andrew Schiff was sitting in a traffic jam in California this month after giving a speech at an investment conference about gold. He turned off the satellite radio, got out of the car and screamed a profanity.

"I'm not Zen at all, and when I'm freaking out about the situation, where I'm stuck like a rat in a trap on a highway with no way to get out, it's very hard," Schiff, director of marketing for broker-dealer Euro Pacific Capital Inc., said in an interview.

Schiff, 46, is facing another kind of jam this year: Paid a lower bonus, he said the $350,000 he earns, enough to put him in the country's top 1 percent by income, doesn't cover his family's private-school tuition, a Kent, Connecticut, summer rental and the upgrade they would like from their 1,200-square- foot Brooklyn duplex.

"I feel stuck," Schiff said. "The New York that I wanted to have is still just beyond my reach."

The smaller bonus checks that hit accounts across the financial-services industry this month are making it difficult to maintain the lifestyles that Wall Street workers expect, according to interviews with bankers and their accountants, therapists, advisers and headhunters.

"People who don't have money don't understand the stress," said Alan Dlugash, a partner at accounting firm Marks Paneth & Shron LLP in New York who specializes in financial planning for the wealthy. "Could you imagine what it's like to say I got three kids in private school, I have to think about pulling them out? How do you do that?"

If Republicans in Washington are not panicked and trying desperately to pull Bobby Jindal in the race tomorrow, or someone like him, the party leaders must have a death wish.

Memo for Erick, Son of Erick: Neither Jindal nor Marco Rubio will help you or the GOP. Why? Because the same racist douchebags who go on and on and on about Barack Obama's birth certificate hate Jindal and Rubio too. Why? Because their parents are immigrants.

Fix the racism and idiocy on your side and you might get a chance at national candidates like Jindal and Rubio someday. For now, you're stuck with Mittens, who even you admit no one likes.

Oh, Jindal absolutely sucks as a candidate. What I mean is that maybe someday, the GOP will evolve enough to accept a national candidate like Jindal or Rubio, in the sense that their parents are immigrants. Right now, the GOP is infested with nirther morons who think that both parents have to be American in order for a child to be American.

My better judgement tells me Kim Jong-Un is just copying his father.

Recall that in 1994, Kim Il-Sung died, North Korea (like other Communist countries at the time) lost privileged access to Soviet aid and the Soviet market. North Korea was in famine. Kim Jong-Il made an IDENTICAL food for no-nukes deal with President Clinton. There is a famous photograph of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright toasting the "Dear Leader" and giving him a basketball signed by Michael Jordan. We know what eventually happened.

Kim Jong-Un isn't trying anything new or inventing a new idea for himself. All the thinking has already been done for him.

McErick's analysis actually makes a bit of sense until you get to the last paragraph. If the GOP ignores the 4 current candidates, the full year of campaigning they've engaged in, the 20 debates we've had to endure, the primaries that have already been held, etc., and just pulls Bobby Jindal, Paul Ryan, or Jeb Bush out of their ass at the last moment, that seems like a disaster in the making. Some conservatives may be happy, but the rest of the country will want to know why this year long adventure was nothing more than a charade. And a candidate who jumps in at the last moment has huge challenges: fundraising, organization, lack of time, just introducing himself to the public, and of course explaining why the Republican primary system broke down.

As I recall it, we (President Clinton) gave him fuel for nuclear electricity much to the chagrin of Congress who was pissed off at the whole affair, but it did work. We had the inspectors in there. Even though Jong iL was still trying to acquire nuclear weapons, he had not during Clinton's presidency so the inspectors were, at least, a good enough deterrent.

George W. cancelled the fuel deal within his first 100 days in office and it's rumored they have moved much further along in their nuclear weapons pursuits since 2000.

It was entertainment for Conservativists. That is the actual purpose of FOX, and of the debates - to provide entertainment for a particular market segment. All twenty debates were nothing more than Conservative Idol.

I don't actually mind the general idea of political porn/entertainment. Give the people what they want, bread and circuses, rule 34, and all that. I just wish FOX wouldn't name their characters after real life people, like the President. It just confuses people.

I've been trying to ignore this tripe, but it really pisses me off. I just don't know how adequately express my disgust about these obliviots.

Hans Kullberg, 27, a trader at Wyckoff, New Jersey-based hedge fund Falcon Management Corp. who said he earns about $150,000 a year, is adjusting his sights, too.

After graduating from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 2006, he spent a $10,000 signing bonus from Citigroup Inc. (C) on a six-week trip to South America. He worked on an emerging-markets team at the bank that traded and marketed synthetic collateralized debt obligations.

His tastes for travel got "a little bit more lavish," he said. Kullberg, a triathlete, went to a bachelor party in Las Vegas in January after renting a four-bedroom ski cabin at Bear Mountain in California as a Christmas gift to his parents. He went to Ibiza for another bachelor party in August, spending $3,000 on a three-day trip, including a 15-minute ride from the airport that cost $100. In May he spent 10 days in India.

The family rents a three-bedroom summer house in Connecticut and will go there again this year for one month instead of four. Schiff said he brings home less than $200,000 after taxes, health-insurance and 401(k) contributions. The closing costs, renovation and down payment on one of the $1.5 million 17-foot-wide row houses nearby, what he called “the low rung on the brownstone ladder,” would consume “every dime” of the family’s savings, he said.
“I wouldn’t want to whine,” Schiff said. “All I want is the stuff that I always thought, growing up, that successful parents had.”

So, even you understand it's a fantasy, then.

Rumored? Pretty sure they've at least (somehow) fizzled a gun-type mechanism.

I used to be totally onboard with the rest of the world regarding the "rumors". Same for Iran. But after we saw what happened with Sadaam Hussein, even though the inspectors and specifically David Kay said they had no idea what he had, I'm very hesitant to believe what I read. I don't know really where that leaves us (the collective Western world).

Israel bombed the Osirak facility in Iraq in '81. It hadn't become a nuclear weapon's reactor at the time. I'm ok with doing the same thing to Iran if at all possible.

I don't think Romney necessarily lacks compassion for the poor and working classes. But I think he's spent so much time cocooned that he seems unable to speak in a way they can relate to. Also he's a bit stiff and robotic. Not his fault, just the way he was assembled born.

I'll believe it when the inspectors get there and are allowed full access to all relevant sites. Until then, it looks like the same wash, rinse, repeat cycle to me. Not to mention the fact that they have already built and tested 2 nuclear devices. Can anybody honestly say that they haven't constructed more and have them squirreled away someplace the Inspectors will not be told about?

Cute, bright, and fashionable about five years ago, which is doubtless when he got his.

LOL well, you could check it out from the library and decide for yourself. I only let critics influence whether or not I'll go see a movie, because that's a lot of $$ for a couple of hours of my time. Usually I get more out of reading.

I found it pretty thought-provoking myself. It is good science fiction...not "hard" science fiction, but extremely plausible nonetheless. Of course the idea of televised death matches is hardly new, even ones involving kids, but Collins puts her own unique spin on it.

Even amongst the Northwest, Portland stands out. I lived near the Canadian border and when the fuel pump went out on my 15-year-old Volvo, I had to go all the way to South Seattle to get a replacement on short notice.
I go to Portland via train, and on the 10-minute drive from the station to my friend's house I pass 3 mechanic shops that specialize in used Volvos. Because Portland.
