Mitt Romney on Rush Limbaugh: The Weakest Possible Statement

Limbaugh is the true leader of the GOP
Politics • Views: 26,604

This is just pathetic. The strongest words GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney can dredge up to describe Rush Limbaugh’s disgusting remarks: “not the language I would have used.”

Mitt Romney, on a rope line on Ohio a short time ago, was asked about Rush Limbaugh’s “slut” verbiage about a young woman testifying on birth control, and replied, per POLITCO’s Reid Epstein, “I’ll just say this, which is it’s not the language I would have used.”

Limbaugh already hates Romney. Romney really has nothing to lose in criticizing Limbaugh. Which makes him look all the more cowardly.

And Santorum ducked the issue by pulling the "He's an entertainer!" card early, while Newt and Crazy Uncle Ron are nowhere to be found on the issue.

Congrats, GOP, you've done the impossible and lowered my already low opinion of you even further. It's sitting somewhere around Satan's wine cellar by now.

My curiosity got the best of me (again) so I went to read the Wiki entry for meretrix:

In ancient Rome, registered prostitutes were called meretrices while the unregistered ones fell under the broad category prostibulae.

Prostibulae? That sounds like some sort of weird appendage that you might want to see a doctor about. So, I guess that's plural and the singular would be prostibula or something like that? Meretrix definitely sounds better.

The Wiki entry is short, but interesting. Yellow togas! Anyway, apparently Medieval Europe had fewer hang-ups and was less judgmental about female sexuality than 21st century America is. Go figure.

Dunno about this one. I've never know Romney to be one to go out of his way to praise Rush Limbaugh. I don't see why he should feel obligated to bend over backward to apologize for him, either. His statement gave him a deserved brush-off - I think he actually played this one well.

Meanwhile over at Free Republic they continue to blame yesterdays bomb scare at Rush Limbaugh's house in Palm Beach on the evil, violent, liberals and continue to assure each other that they are ready for the all out civil war against all of us evil socialists. (WTF?)

Some guy sent a plaque to Rush, something he hoped Rush would promote on his radio program and help him sell a bunch more plaques. This plaque was an electronic video and audio memorial to John Wilkes Booth in celebration of his assassination of President Lincoln (a $200.00 prototype).

Now maybe I recently got a concussion or something and am so delusional that I cannot think in any kind of logical pattern, but how does any of this connect to the left? It wasn't a bomb sent by a "leftie", in fact it was a disgusting piece of white supremacist wank-off tech sent to Rush by someone else almost as sick as him apparently. :p

Romney rolled out a new tax proposal after many Republicans blasted his initial plan as too cautious. His plans to cut income tax rates by 20 percent and eliminate the Alternative Minimum Tax sound appealing, but he offers no specifics on how he'll offset the billions in lost revenue.

Yes, yes they are. And although the divorce rate is not much higher - if at all - than the population at large, there have been no studies done on legal separation or other symptoms of a troubled marriage that could indicate that they just need to get laid more. Not to mention, given their extreme distaste for divorces, the fact that the divorce rate is equal to the "heathens" is incredibly damning.

To me it's a no-brainer. Asked about Rush Limbaugh's misogynistic comments, the right answer is, "That was disgusting, and Rush Limbaugh should apologize."

That's not taking responsibility for what Rush said, it's expressing a simple human reaction to a seriously creepy attack on a private citizen who did nothing but testify to Congress on a current issue.

If Romney had the guts to do that, I'd be praising him tonight. But he's actually afraid of what will happen if he criticizes Rush Limbaugh.

What's so much sadder than Mitt's pathological need to pander with every position he takes is how often he gets it so so wrong. He wants to think he has his fingers on the pulse of the nation, but he's sticking them in the wrong place...

Obama isn't consulting with Sharpton on the debt crisis. Sharpton isn't named most influential liberal. Sorry but the two aren't remotely alike. If all Mitt Romney can say is "it's not the language" I would have used, it suggests to me that Romney is afraid of upsetting Limbaugh more than actually calling him out for being a jerk. Romney's a political coward and his reaction to this story shows his cowardness in spades.

re: #84 Charles Johnson

To me it's a no-brainer. Asked about Rush Limbaugh's misogynistic comments, the right answer is, "That was disgusting, and Rush Limbaugh should apologize."

That's not taking responsibility for what Rush said, it's expressing a simple human reaction to a seriously creepy attack on a private citizen who did nothing but testify to Congress on a current issue.

If Romney had the guts to do that, I'd be praising him tonight. But he's actually afraid of what will happen if he criticizes Rush Limbaugh.

Mitt almost certainly doesn't listen to Rush's show. He was asked about a statement he hadn't heard. He probably wasn't briefed before hand. He made a generic distancing statement on something he probably wasn't aware of. There's no conspiracy or outrageous outrage. A simple political move any other politician would have made.

Newt can't say anything, since this is an issue on which he has zero moral authority. The only way he could credibly respond would be to lash out hard at Rush, which he will not do. But if he did that and Limbaugh survived the controversy, Rush would go out of his way to hobble Newt.

It's even more important, on every level, to make sure women who have a lot of sex have access to contraception. Because babies are expensive, abortions are not a form of birth control. It saves money for the insurance companies to pay for the birth control, which is why they haven't really kicked at this at all.

And since you have to take the same amount of birth control if you have sex with your husband, or with the 2007 Buccaneers, the amount of sluttiness or not doesn't really come into it.

Wait, you're calling this an outrageous outrage? Isn't that the term for things that aren't actually outrageous?

You don't find Rush Limbaugh-- the guy that Boehner consults on the debt plan, the guy who has access to the GOP on every level-- calling a woman a slut for giving her opinion about the birth control 'debate' an outrage?

And do you really assume the only way to know what Rush said is to be listening to him all day? No, wait, I know you don't, because you're not stupid.

So why would you say that?

re: #173 Obdicut

I just.. what is the point in calling her a slut, round-heeled, a rent-a-cooch? What is the best possible outcome?

It's even more important, on every level, to make sure women who have a lot of sex have access to contraception. Because babies are expensive, abortions are not a form of birth control. It saves money for the insurance companies to pay for the birth control, which is why they haven't really kicked at this at all.

And since you have to take the same amount of birth control if you have sex with your husband, or with the 2007 Buccaneers, the amount of sluttiness or not doesn't really come into it.

There never really was a point to it all, it was the dog-pile effect. Rush poisoned the well by asserting to his legions of useful idiots that she was some "slut" looking for the taxpayers to cover her costs, and they took it all, hook, line, sinker, and tackle box. No matter how much you point out that nothing in her testimony was about sex, they have to believe it was about sex, because Rush said so and Rush is never wrong.

Brad Pitt and Angeline Jolie are irrelevant, but you know that. Nobody's expecting Mitt Romney to listen to three hours of Limbaugh every day. But this isn't a passing comment...it's been in the news for going on a week now. Find another way to defend him besides blaming his handlers.

Yeah, but they also elected Paul the Second, so its iffy on whether or not he'll try to bleed somebody else for his state's sake.

Not in this case: Kentucky is Mitch McConnell's home state, so he'll throw ideology aside and make sure his constituents get aid. He knows what side his bread is buttered on.

As it should be. Representative of your constituents. Regardless if they are union, women on birth control (why the fuck are we even discussing this) or small business owners. In the path of a tornado. You always should represent. Grow a conscience.

That was the MBF that idiot Kirsten Powers was pulling earlier today. She failed miserably. She was also using Maher as a MBF. The usual. Same kind of crap we've seen used here back in the weird old days.

I remember when President Obama consulted Bill Maher on the debt crisis and was consistently voted the most influential liberal. Limbaugh has influence and whenever he says something crazy like this, it's always oh he's just an entertainer yet this entertainer was asked to consult Boehner on the debt. They clearly value Rush and frankly need him more than he needs them.

If I were one of the Republican candidates especially one with daughter like I know Santorum has. I would have said this. I'm a father and Mr. Limbaugh's comments have no place in the political discourse. A woman should not be called a slut because we disagree with her opinions or ever. Mr. Limbaugh should respect women.
Of course that statement would probably get Rush flying into an outrage about how that candidate was not a real conservative but it would show courage and god knows these candidates lack anything resembling it.

I think somewhat yes. Breitbart wouldn't have said something this stupid. Were he still alive, he'd set a meme that would likely be hateful, but have some wit and not give the left such an obvious cudgel with which to pound away.

Are you serious?

Just off the top of my head, from Breitbart: 1) "Ted Kennedy is a cocksucker. I'm glad he's dead." (on the day TK died)
2) "Stop raping people! Stop raping people!" (to all the people at an OWS protest)
3) "Fuck John Podesta! He should go straight to hell!" (at CPAC)

Even Limbaugh doesn't usually venture into this kind of territory. Breitbart was savvy about using the internet and sowing discord. But witty? What wit of his are you talking about...it was rarely if ever on display. He was the internet's equivalent of Limbaugh, but more profane and even more hateful because he could get away with it on the net, whereas radio is a little more PG rated.

Okay, whatever. The offsets are totally not the point. Whatever 'offsets' are appropriate are things we should be cutting anyway, they don't need the context of a storm to make them good to cut. If they're not good to cut, then they're not good to cut. If they are, they are. This changes nothing.

Proper response from Rick Santorum:

How can you not call Limbaugh's remarks absurd? A suggestion that a woman receiving free contraceptives should be forced to post 'sex tapes' is completely unrealistic, as Rush Limbaugh well knew. He said seriously off-the-wall things trying to gain attention and went over-the-top in so doing. "Absurd" is an appropriate characterization and I will not retract it. As I have for Catholic hospitals in the contraception controversy, so now I exercise my own right to Freedom of Conscience. "Here I stand, I cannot Recant."

Granted Deeds ran a terrible campaign but that big of a margin to Bobby McD after two terms of Warner and Kaine both of whom by all accounts were well liked and if things go right will both be the the Senators.

Proper response from Rick Santorum:

The quote at the end is from Sir Thomas Moore.

Because Rick Santorum is among the majority of people who fervently pray they will make a baby everytime they have sex.

I even made an example of that. Earlier I called Ace of Spades a lowlife and a freak. He called Sandra Fluke a "a shiftless rent-a-cooch from East Whoreville." Compare. One is not like the other.

Deeds was one of those Democrats who didn't seem to take the Tea Party craziness seriously in '09, much to our embarrassment.

This shit kills people too. It killed Breitbart IMO. Or was major contributor. Something they would never admit to. These people are "bumper sticker" people with an attitude. Always looking for getting into trouble.

Yeah totally. He ran an awful campaign and McDonnell though I despise him ran an equally good one.

Speaking of creationists, here is part of our daily creationism update:

Debate continues over religion policy for Buncombe schools

Pagan advocate Angela Pippinger provided Twitter-based coverage of the March 1 Buncombe County Board of Education meeting, where a revised religion policy was at the center of a heated debate. Her tweets are aggregated below.

The debate over the new policy instructing school officials to "not use their positions to endorse, promote, or disparage a particular religious belief, viewpoint or practice" continued at the March 1 meeting. In early January, Pagan mother Ginger Strivelli carried out her promise to deliver Pagan religious books to Buncombe County Schools, after North Windy Ridge intermediate school had accepted Bibles for distribution. Pippinger also tweeted part of the debate at last month's board meeting.

[...]

Unnamed man says that politics and religion are the same thing, cannot be separated. Unnamed man says kids have to learn how to defend themselves in preparation for the real world. Unnamed man says that Christians have been silent too long. Unnamed man says that board is putting off vote because they hope people don't come back. Unnamed man says that if vote doesn't swing in favor of Christians, they won't lay down.

This is America.

Frankly, IMHO, along wtih it being act of violence, slavery and selfishness, rape could also be considered attempted murder. Women die as a result of pregnancy.

Yes. A major bully and de facto leader of political party, the Republican Party, with a direct line and ear with the Speaker of the House, John Boehner. He wields some political power which affects policy and affects lives.

It's at least some kind of misdemeanor harassment charge. If someone started yelling "slut" or "whore" to me in the middle of the street for several days and hours on end I would call the police and demand charges be filed.

Watching a climate denier on Bill Maher right now. Neil DeGrasse Tyson is trying to talk him down. Awesome.

I guess I was too steamed to see it that way, since the fuckwitted old-ass douchetard denier had me pretty much screaming at the TV (and I hardly ever do that). But said douchetard global-warming denier used to be a vice-chairman at GM. Explains their funding of the Heartland Institute, as the douchetard global-warming denier simply regurgitated their toxic talking points.

It's amazing you know. How they don't see the parallels to these religions and sects. No where have we heard this line before: politics and religion are the same thing?

Bain Capital owns a big chunk of Clear Channel.
Could this be why Romney couldn't bring himself to condemn Rushbo?
This is from InfoWars on January 13:

Of course Mitt Romney is not running Bain Capital anymore. He is a “retired partner”, but he still has a huge financial stake in Bain Capital. We’re talking about millions upon millions of dollars. If you doubt this, just check out page 34 of this public financial disclosure report. So if you have been wondering why so many conservative talk show hosts are being so incredibly kind to Mitt Romney, this just might be the answer.

Just a word of unsolicited advice: Infowars is run by batshit birther and 9/11 truther lunatic Alex Jones. Not exactly a "go-to" credible source.

If the information itself happens to be legitimate, it will be available somewhere else.

Oh, but that's right, I forget. I would be considered a heretic at worst, or "backslidden" at best, should I ever be outed as a liberal Christian. So that means I'm no longer an American of faith.

*spit*

Stop reading the Gospel, obviously the words spoken by Jesus are leading you astray! Instead you should devote all your time To the half of the New Testament written single-handedly by Paul. Paul explains why women are inferior and should be shunned by right minded men, why gays are an abomination, and much, much more. Apparently these are all revelations that Jesus just...uhh...simply never got around to explaining to us in his own words.

Never mind that quite a lot of what Paul has to say seems to contradict the spirit of what Jesus said in the Gospel and in places actually does contradict what Jesus said. It is in the Bible so it must all be true, (you need to learn to embrace cognitive dissonance) right?

Jesus also said in the gospel that false teachers would come after him and using his name try to pervert his teachings. That one of them actually ended up in the Bible as published by the Roman Catholic Church after the council of Nicea somehow doesn't shock me all that much. The Catholics always have seemed eager to embrace any teachings that confirmed their own misogynist and patriarchal bent. :p

True he is a nut (I don't know why both Ron Paul and Rand Paul are constantly on his show) but in this case their ownership can be verified. I should have looked further.
From Forbes:
At the height of the credit boom, THL [Thomas H. Lee Partners]and Bain Capital spent $17.9 billion to buy Clear Channel.
That's a lot of money.

Republican politicians are unable to speak out against Limbaugh's misogynistic rant, as their lips have been continuously applied to his anal sphincter for the past decade.

Sorry, OT:

Meanwhile over at Free Republic they continue to blame yesterdays bomb scare at Rush Limbaugh's house in Palm Beach on the evil, violent, liberals and continue to assure each other that they are ready for the all out civil war against all of us evil socialists. (WTF?)

What if they held a Civil War and nobody showed up?
