Video: Sandra Fluke’s Testimony That Drove the Right Wing Crazy

Let’s face it - they don’t even know what she said
Health • Views: 35,196

Right wingers are spewing a huge amount of venom at law student Sandra Fluke, but it’s quite evident from Rush Limbaugh’s statements and the nonsense all over the right wing blogs that most of these people have no idea what Fluke actually said.

Actually, that’s the generous analysis — it’s also likely that they do know what she said, but are deliberately lying about it.

So in the interest of accuracy, here’s the C-SPAN video of Sandra Fluke’s testimony to the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, on February 23, 2012. She actually begins speaking at about 15:20.

Here’s just one obvious example showing how the ranting wingnuts never read or watched her statement: notice that Fluke says she was past president of Law Students for Reproductive Justice. It’s the first thing she says, in fact, when she introduces herself.

But the right wing blogs are all screaming about this, and pretending it’s a deep dark secret they’ve discovered that totally discredits Ms Fluke.

This week it has become acceptable on the Right to call any woman who opposes their policies a slut. So, even though I'm a man, I say we are all sluts now. Shame the GOP by refusing to let them denigrate people with labels.

It's what they done in the past, acting "outraged" at Rush's comments/actions and their customers voicing "concern," then quietly returning to running ads on his show once the controversy has died down.

Andrew Breitbart, 1969-2012
by David Frum

We live in a time of political and media demagoguery unparalleled since the 19th century. Many of our most important public figures have gained their influence and power by inciting and exploiting the ugliest of passions—by manipulating fears and prejudices—by serving up falsehoods as reported truth. In time these figures will one by one die. What are we to say of this cohort, this group, this generation? That their mothers loved them? That their families are bereaved? That their fans admired them and their employees treated generously by them? Public figures are inescapably judged by their public actions. When those public actions are poisonous, the obituary cannot be pleasant reading. -- David Frum

I have a serious difference with Frum, though - he gives Breitbart a pass on racism, says it was purely a tool for him.

I think that's a ridiculous excuse. Breitbart is infamous for reasons that quite clearly can be traced to his manipulation of right wing race memes. It was one of his constant themes, repeated over and over.

He enabled and promoted racial grievance politics, and when I pointed out that his audience was reacting to that in exactly the way you'd expect, by spewing overtly racist comments, Breitbart's response was to attack me and claim that I was somehow involved with planting all those comments.

At what point would David Frum consider Breitbart a racist? At the very least, he was a seriously vicious race-baiter.

re: #28 Kronocide

Are we actually regressing as a society, or has this relatively new platform (the internet) allowed us to confirm that we really haven't progressed at all?

As a species, we have failed the test of character the internet has afforded us. We have demonstrated that with anonymity and lack of consequences, we are deeply petty, shortsighted, and venal.

However, we, and I refer specifically to the US here, are also regressing as a society. The US is alone in this only because it is the only nation that has all-pervasive, completely enveloping media right now, and every nation will have to deal with some measure of it as the world progresses. But the saturation of Conservative cult media, and the bald-faced incitement of hatred and ignorance it endorses, has definitely regressed society as a whole. Hatred and bigotry that, if not expunged, had at least become completely socially unacceptable, is once again acceptable. Thirsting for the blood of your neighbours, calling for violence and rebellion - that's becoming okay again, as long as you hate liberals. It's amazing how much ethical progress a few short years of pervasive, agenda-driven media can undo.

A Statement from Rush
March 03, 2012

For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.

I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress. I personally do not agree that American citizens should pay for these social activities. What happened to personal responsibility and accountability? Where do we draw the line? If this is accepted as the norm, what will follow? Will we be debating if taxpayers should pay for new sneakers for all students that are interested in running to keep fit?In my monologue, I posited that it is not our business whatsoever to know what is going on in anyone's bedroom nor do I think it is a topic that should reach a Presidential level.

My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir. I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.

Especially if you consider Frum's position in the conservative environment. On the racist argument Ta-Nehisi Coates makes the case in On Making Yourself Right.

That's a pretty good one.

It is wholly appropriate to be sorry that Andrew Breitbart died. But in the relevant business, it is right to be sorry for how he lived.

Which is sort of my feeling on the issue. A big part of Breitbart's gimmick was to elicit hate in others. He loved nothing more than for people to display hatred and ugliness. That was evident in his obsessive retweeting of all the insults hurled at him. That's why I think he probably would have love Matt Taibbi's ugly and classless obituary. I don't know if Breitbart was a hateful of bigoted person but I do know that a large part of his goal was to create a hateful and bigoted reaction from his adversaries. He died, like all of us will, as a fragile human being and I'm sympathetic to that. I will not react to his passing with hate and ugliness as he would want me to and I'm not going to become more like him now he's gone.

Bullshit, Rush...you knew exactly what you were saying all those times you ran Ms. Fluke down and slandered her name and know exactly what you're saying now with the half-assed non-apology apology.

/it was only satire!

I'd almost swear he went with the same page out of the same playbook as Romney's "criticism" last night, whining that people are aggravated at the "choice of words" rather than the sentiment behind them.

But I'm not holding out hope that "forgiveness" will be withheld and his feet kept to the fire. Nobody expects better of Rush and are going to settle for this non-apology as the best they're going to get. SSDD.

College girl sues university because her roommate was having too much sex

Her argument is that the university's failure to separate her from her hedonist roommate caused her to go into a suicidal depression. Umm, how about just go out and get some for yourself and maybe you'd lighten up a bit?

A woman goes up to congressional committee and says: I'm having sex so damn much, I'm going broke. What the heck is going on here? This is why I tell you, it's "phony soldiers" times ten. And it's not true. Maria Cantwell, Senator from Washington, MSNBC Live this morning. The anchor said, "Rush Limbaugh yesterday squarely aimed his words at Sandra Fluke questioning her virtue..." I'm not questioning her virtue. I know what her virtue is. She's having so much sex that she's going broke! There's no question about her virtue. "Rush Limbaugh yesterday squarely aimed his words at Sandra Fluke, questioning her virtue, doing so in a pretty rude manner on the airwaves. How do you feel about her character, her virtue being questioned, and is she being treated like a political football between the parties?"

Her "virtue" is not in question. Her virtue being questioned? Who is this anchor? Thomas Roberts. Thomas, do you have any question about her virtue? Is it still an open question to you? Anyways, Maria Cantwell, here's what she said.

The Most Influential Conservative

NEW YORK – By a wide margin, Americans consider Rush Limbaugh the nation’s most influential conservative voice.

Those are the results of a poll conducted by “60 Minutes” and Vanity Fair magazine and issued Sunday. The radio host was picked by 26 percent of those who responded, followed by Fox News Channel’s Glenn Beck at 11 percent. Actual politicians — former Vice President Dick Cheney and former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin — were the choice of 10 percent each.

Damn, Ann Althouse is indeed reasonable in that thread. Shocka.

You have a blind spot. This isn't about welfare. This is about health insurance. A person, rich or poor, buys health insurance. They pay for it and they are entitled to the coverage they bought. This is a debate about what coverage should be required.

And by the way, students paying a lot of money for tuition and room and board and the required health insurance plan are in a very tight situation, going deeper and deeper into debt and facing a tough job market. Their arguments for the insurance to cover the things they use make plenty of sense. You don't have to be persuaded, but your joking about fat girls isn't persuasive!

re: #158 Lidane

Call it the Limbaugh effect. He didn't mean to call Limbaugh a fuck-o. It was a "poor word choice". And he didn't mean to tell him to go suck a fat cock. He was just trying to be humorous and satirical.

Fluke said nothing to deserve the reaction she got from Limbaugh. On the other hand, Limbaugh, because of the reaction he had to Fluke, deserves to be denigrated incisively.

Limbaugh walked up and without provocation punched Fluke in the face. Limbaugh has shown more than once he only respects severe retribution as a deterrent, so it is fitting he gets punched in the face and kicked in the balls. Figuratively speaking of course.

And finally I've seen a real person who has been banned by google:

Mike said...
Frankly I'm a little confused here. I listen to El Rushbo on occasion; a little Blowhard, whether it be Limbaugh or O'Reilly goes a long way.

Did Limbaugh use the words "slut" and "prostitute" or did he simply say this woman had sex three times a day and she wants us to pay for it?

Certainly the testimony of Ms. Fluke was a bit of a drama queen act. She had fellow female students at Georgetown Law (tuition $45,000 a year) who had to give up sex for three years because they couldn't pay for three years of birth control (which works out to about a grand a year).

I don't know (because I didn't hear--turn that stuff off pretty quick) whether Limbaugh used the words slut and prostitute or whether those people who got the vapors about it simply connected the words "sex" and "pay for it".

Let's adapt it. Rational Global Armchair Snarker's Party? We could even adopt a version of the Death's Head symbol, but with a trollface instead of a skull.

I'm sorry, but no. The Death's Head, Nazi swastika, and SS runes are too tainted by history for any repurposing, even edited.

Damn, Ann Althouse is indeed reasonable in that thread. Shocka.

And that's what has been lost in all the bitching about the "cost to taxpayers" and such, that the mandate that has caused so much Republican pearl-clutching is for one purpose: to make comprehensive insurance exactly that. If you're paying the money for something that is being sold as "comprehensive," then when bits and pieces are lopped off for whatever reason, it ceases to be "comprehensive."

re: #159 The Ineffable Name

OK, sorry, got overheated for a moment there.

Still, the point is: Rush Limbaugh is one of the informal leaders of the GOP.

Bill Maher is nothing to Democrats, and is not a Democrat himself.

I really don't agree, though he is a very influential figure. But Rush is also almost impossible to oppose for Republican politicians, due to the fact that he has more access, via his radio program, than Republicans in Congress do to the Congress critters constituents.

Of COURSE she did! She's a woman who went before Congress and talked about birth control and ladyparts! We can't allow that! It's not part of Real America.

Why do you hate America?

That makes him the de facto leader of the GOP, Dark. If elected politicians can't oppose him, then he runs the show.

That makes him one of informal GOP leaders. I don't see how this can be disputed.

You've just confirmed what we've all been arguing with you about: Rush is so powerful and has enough juice in the modern GOP, no one in the party dares oppose him on anything, lest they want to see their career dissipation light go into overdrive.

That, more than anything, says that Rush holds the keys to the GOP kingdom.

Not even the RNC leadership can butt heads with Rush and come out unscathed. AFAIK, Rinsed Prius has kept his head down in regards to Rush, but didn't Steele say a thing or two about Rush that he had to backpedal on?

To be fair, it could also be interpreted as meaning the leadership of the GOP is so weak and spineless as to not even be able to refute a shockjock.

The shockjock, Jimmi. There's none other. They sure are spineless, and that doesn't refute the "informal leader" claim, quite the contrary. The weaker the formal leaders are...

Yeah, i know, just making clear the implications of what is being asserted by denying that he isn't der(p) leader.
