Tech Note: Embedded Tweets in Comments and Pages

New Twitter integration features
LGF • Views: 29,308

We have some new features to announce, designed to make it much simpler to place embedded tweets from Twitter in comments and LGF Pages.

All you have to do to insert an embedded tweet is paste in the URL of the tweet’s ‘Details’ page at Twitter. For example, here’s the page for my tweet about the previous article.

You get to these individual tweet pages at Twitter by clicking the time/date on any tweet, or by expanding it (by clicking inside it) and then clicking the ‘Details’ link.

When your comment or Page is posted, the URL of the tweet will be automatically transformed by the LGF Blog Engine (through the magic of regular expressions and Twitter’s oEmbed API) into the HTML code that shows the full text of the tweet. This HTML code can then be further transformed into the actual Twitter-formatted embedded tweet, with links for following, replying, retweeting, etc.

Unfortunately, that final step can only happen at page load time; the Twitter API doesn’t have a method of rendering the embedded tweet dynamically yet. This means that if you post a comment through our Ajax system, you won’t see the final Twitter-formatted tweet — but you will see the full text of the tweet with a credit line and links to the author, so it’s still useful. You’ll see the final embedded tweet the next time you reload the entire page.

For LGF Pages authors, there’s another nice feature. When you use the LGF Pages bookmarklet on any Twitter details page, the Pages posting form will open up with the code for the embedded tweet already inserted in the editing box — you don’t even have to copy or paste anything.

Just want to point out you don't even need to click and open the tweet at all - if you have the new Twitter layout, just hover over the tweet as it appears in your timelime, right-click the word "Open", then choose "copy link" (or however else your browser of choice phrases it), and paste it here:

I'm no great fan of Obamacare, but when I see stuff like that, I wonder if easy access to mental health care is such a bad idea.

A married man and father of three children was arrested Thursday on charges of child pornography and illegal gun possession after Internet task force police raided his home and computers. Donald Ratcliff, 60, a Professor of Christian Education at Wheaton College in Illinois, and a Southern Baptist pastor, had bail set at $750,000, and was instructed to have no contact with anyone under 18, and not to use any computer.

The gays probably caused this, in conjunction with loose women on the Pill and poor people getting heath care they don't deserve. The moral decadence of our society clearly caused this upstanding Christian minister to hoard child porn and illegal guns. Such a tragedy.

It was but a brief respite...

I'm no great fan of Obamacare either.

Twenty years, it's been, since universal health care was first put forward by Bush I's administration and shown to be effective not only in reducing costs but also providing better health care. Twenty lost years, an entire generation of Americans who should have grown up with the US government doing its job. And a golden opportunity to right that wrong was lost, mostly by a President too timid to seize history. Twenty more years it will be now, another generation having to put up with substandard care and wasted money, while telling themselves that it's somehow better because that's what spokespeople for megacorporations tell them.

That was probably too early for a sudden rant. It's been a long day of frustrations with the human costs of the US health care system.

HotAir's Ed Morrissey continues to spread disinformation about Sandra Fluke and the issue of coverage of contraception in privately paid insurance policies:

I think Rush did the right thing in apologizing to Fluke. However, let’s keep in mind that it was Fluke who made her sexual activity a matter of national political debate by insisting that the government pass laws and regulations forcing employers and insurers to provide her free contraception, and apparently as much as she and others demand. It’s Republicans who believe that contraception should remain a private affair, and that employers and insurers should be free to decide whether to cover contraception for their employees and customers or not. Democrats used Fluke to demand that those choices be stripped from private enterprises and instead be forced by the executive branch to entirely subsidize contraception.

They breed wingnuts in Wheaton, and its not easy to grow up gay there (one of my former co-workers at Cingular was gay and grew up there). But this shithead takes the cake.

Speaking of Twitter, when I followed Sandra Fluke a couple of days ago, she was hovering around the 2K followers mark. Now, she's over 20K. Tenfold increase in followers in just 2 days? Rightwing-intimidation-and-silencing FAIL :P

I'm all for health care reform, but I really believe it needs to phased in, work out the kinks, deal with unforeseen consequences and so on.

Another thing- I do not believe there can be real health care reform without lobby reform.

If lobby issues are not dealt with, reform will go up in smoke. Can you imagine super pacs centered around the health industry?

Charles, is there any way to have non-Flash videos embedded in your posts, when those are available? For example, both the Sandra Fluke testimony and Rachel Maddow videos you posted here can be seen on the iPad in their respective sites, but here I got the missing plug in warning.

Unfortunately, nothing I can do about that. MSNBC and C-SPAN only supply links to their old-style Flash embedded videos. Hopefully, they'll update their sharing options soon to include IFRAME-based HTML video.
