What They Should Have Done

What they should have done is simple. They should have claimed victory when Obama made the modification to the mandate. When the initial mandate came out from HHS, there was a multi-day freakout, the Bishops and the prudes generated a lot of press, and Team Obama looked at things, calibrated the mandate so that so-called “religious freedom” was preserved, and the entire issue would have been taken off the table if the right had done the smart thing and just claimed victory. They could have celebrated it as a triumph of religious freedom over Obama, and could have claimed that their political might forced Obama to capitulate. He gave them an out and a political victory while maintaining a political victory for himself- he created a win/win situation for them. They could have used it to their advantage- “Obama attempted to assault religious freedom and our collective political power and might was able to make sure that religious organizations no longer have to provide contraception.” They could have made this into a big win for the team.

But instead of seizing upon it, they instead shit the bed and decided to double down, and now we have near 70% of the country looking at the Republicans like they are some kind of freak show, with their leaders introducing the Blunt and Rubio amendments and their spiritual leaders calling all women who use contraceptives sluts and prostitutes and the base doubling down and following their lead. It’s bewildering to watch. If I were Frank Luntz or the other Republican strategists I would be pulling my hair out and trying to get them into a room listening to Kenny Rogers looped for 24 hours.

In less than 24 hours you’ve hacked into my Wiki page, published my telephone number on Twitter, called the Rolling Stone offices pretending to be outraged “advertisers” (anonymous ones, who hung up before we could figure out which “ads” to pull), and then spent all night calling and texting my phone with various threats and insults, many of them directed at my family. “Better grow eyes in the back of your head,” was one; “I’m going to take a shit on your mother’s grave,” was another; a third called my wife a “piece of shit like you,” and many others called me a “pile of human excrement.”

Those last ones to me were the most interesting because that quote is lifted directly from Breitbart’s own obit of Ted Kennedy, which like me Breitbart ran just hours after his subject died. So that means the writers of these letters knew that what I did was exactly the same as what Breitbart had done, and yet they still found a way to be unironically outraged on Breitbart’s behalf. I thought: “These people don’t even get their own jokes.”

The really crazy thing is that I was sort of trying to be nice to Breitbart – the obit was at least half an homage. Not that I liked the guy, but he did have a few attractive qualities, one of which being the fact that he got a kick out of the nasty things people said about him. He even once had a plan to set up a website encouraging anti-Breitbart abuse, and was going to let it ride for a while, even spending six figures to hire an Obama p.r. flack to make anti-Breitbart posters, until finally revealing that he'd sponsored the whole thing. Would a person like that really expect someone like me to send flowers when he croaked? No way: he’d be insulted if I didn’t give him one last kick in the balls on the way out the door.

But I guess no homage is complete without a celebration of the whole man, and the whole man in this case was not just a guy who once said, “It’s all about a good laugh,” but also someone who liked to publish peoples’ personal information on the internet, hack into private web sites, tell lies in an attempt to get his enemies fired, and incite readers to threats against his targets and their families, including death threats. I left all of that stuff out of my obit, but now, thanks to you readers, that’s all in there as well, leaving, for posterity, a much more complete picture of the man.

I don't think it's so much running out of ideas as it is the inability to present an existing idea in a new an interesting way.

For example, the humans vs aliens fight for the future of humanity sci-fi story has been done to death, but there are still new and interesting ways to present that story rather than say, remaking Starship Troopers.

Personally I would love to see more movies like Inception. It really made you think, made you wonder, made you look at things differently. It was a movie that was actually built for an intelligent audience, rather than the usual lame teen comedy or "lots of shit blowing up with wooden acting" summer blockbuster.

While I believe that the case should be seen to its conclusion so that justice is served, I feel uneasy with the idea of Andy's estate being wrecked in the end. Yeah, he was a douchebag in the public arena and deserves to have that part of his persona ripped apart, but I'm not sure his family deserves to pay for his behavior.

Yeah, he was a douchebag in the public arena and deserves to have that part of his persona ripped apart, but I'm not sure his family deserves to pay for his behavior.

Dog survives 53 days in wild, reunited with owner

Barbara Bagley says she never gave up hope that her dog would be found alive in the Nevada desert after the animal bolted from the scene of a crash that critically injured her and killed her husband.

But the Salt Lake City woman endured plenty of frustration until her beloved 4-year-old Shetland sheepdog, Dooley, was tracked down Feb. 18 after surviving 53 days in the wild on roadkill and scattered ranch water sources.

“I would think about Dooley constantly,” she said. “There were TV commercials with dogs that made me think about him and cry. He’s just the sweetest dog.”

The Dec. 27 single-vehicle accident on Interstate 80 near Battle Mountain, about 225 miles east of Reno, sent Bagley and her 55-year-old husband, Brad Vom Baur, to the hospital in critical condition. Their other sheltie, Delaney, was killed in the wreck. Dooley ran away and vanished.

Bagley, 48, suffered a concussion, broken ribs, a shattered wrist and two punctured lungs. As soon as she mustered up enough strength, she turned her attention to a search for her dog in the sprawling sage-covered plains and hills of northeastern Nevada.

Realizing what Dooley could mean for her recovery, dozens of Nevada volunteers responded to a Facebook plea for help in looking for him. But the search was canceled before it began after the Jan. 6 discovery of what appeared to be the dog’s remains along the interstate. The same day, her husband died.

During his ordeal, Dooley’s weight dropped from 44 pounds to 20 pounds. He was once spotted devouring a dead coyote along the roadway. A long bird bone was pulled from his throat by a veterinarian.

Retired detective and volunteer sheriff's posse member Mike Zullo is listed as the co-author of "A Question of Eligibility," an e-book for sale on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

The book is a copy of the investigation findings presented to the press on Thursday.

Zullo's co-author is Jerome Corsi, a well-known political conspiracy writer.

Breitbart lied about her and maliciously twisted her words to humiliate her in front of the world. Losing her job was only the cherry on top of the indignity she suffered at his hands. She doesn't strike me as the kind of person that naturally gives a rat's ass about money, she cares about sending the message that going into the future this kind of behavior will have devastating consequences for the people who perpetrate it.

I can empathize with her, Frank. Her gender is no barrier in such a matter, as I already know what its like to have an asshole try to hurt you simply to advance himself. Granted that what happened to my wasn't nearly as bad, but my own senses of honor and justice gets me the rest of the way to outrage over what happened to her.

But at the same time, I'm also a pragmatist, and someone who doesn't like creating collateral damage when it can be avoided. Andrew Breitbart is dead, and so the message you described is now going to be badly muddied. And that means a complete victory can no longer be won. That being true, I would suggest the best solution is a settlement, though I would demand that said settlement include a full and public retraction of the story by Breitbart's media outlets.

When his shields are dropped, he has no idea how to override it, therefore Kirk & Co. are able to get off a couple of shots, scoot, and regroup.

Khan deserved to blow himself up in the end.
