Really Bad Timing: Rush Limbaugh to Be Honored With Bust in Missouri Statehouse

Possibly not the best idea at this point in time
Wingnuts • Views: 26,170

The Hall of Famous Missourians in the Missouri State Capitol is about to have a new statue: Rush Limbaugh.

WASHINGTON — The Hall of Famous Missourians in the Missouri State Capitol is filled with the busts of famous people from the Show-Me State. There are political figures (Harry Truman, John Ashcroft), writers (Laura Ingalls Wilder), musicians (Scott Joplin, Charlie Parker) and even a game show host (Bob Barker). Right-wing radio personality Rush Limbaugh, who is currently embroiled in controversy after he called a female law student advocating for contraception coverage a “slut,” will soon be joining that esteemed group.

On Feb. 13, Kansas City, Mo. sculptor E. Spencer Schubert posted on his blog that he was in the process of sculpting busts of Limbaugh and Dred Scott, a slave who unsuccessfully sued for freedom for himself and his family in the famous 1857 case Dred Scott v. Sandford, to go into the Missouri State Capitol.

Rush Limbaugh and Dred Scott. Hard to top that combo.

Maybe it can be used like the statue of the infamous Klansman Senator Bilbo down in Mississippi…

A bronze statue of Bilbo was placed in the rotunda of the Mississippi state Capitol building. It was relocated to another room, which is now frequently used by the Legislative Black Caucus. Some of the members use the statue’s outstretched arm as a coat rack.

Very difficult mission to fly as well, due to the location of the camps, until we had air bases on the continent. Perhaps from Italy or by flying over to Soviet strips but the Russians were not happy with the missions like that that we did do.

Well, you could interpret it in a number of ways, but I think the most obvious ‘deep’ interpretation is that it’s the story of God interceding to save Israel (the people, not the nation-state) from a nefarious Persian plot to destroy them.

It’s also a seasonal gift, of course, and there may be some significance to the particular scroll. Or Obama may have said he wanted one. Who knows? I’ve never thought of Bibi as being that…symbolic.

Of course, if the message really is: For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?” then Sarah Palin’s nose is going to be severely out of joint. SHE, not OBAMA is supposed to be Esther.

20th Air Force in Foggia could have flown such a mission with B-24 Liberators (which had longer range than the B-17) but they would still have been at long range and with small bombloads, owning to the need to climb higher than normal to clear the Alps.

Well, I don’t think Bibi meant it as a literal comparison. He’s also trying to rally support and do as all politicians of his ilk do, stir some fear into action. I think it’s meant to create a certain level of guilt upon the Obama administration. However, if I understand this correctly he’s also speaking for Israel to act on its own. Keeping in mind that bombing a nuclear facility would not be the same like bombing Auschwitz anyway.

Oh wow…just read the news about the New Orleans Saints’ “bounty program” (cash rewards to defensive players for injuring opponents). This sucks, although I live in KC I love New Orleans and Drew Brees and the Saints have been such an inspiration to that town as it recovered from Katrina. The penalties from this stupid stunt will probably damage the team’s playoff and SB prospects for a long time to come.

Why do NFL players, coaches, execs think they can get away with this kind of crap? They are under a microscope.

re: #75 ReamWorks, SKG (fka Reuven)

Also the penalty for false or slanderous speech (“Lashon Hara”) can be death, and it has been compared to murder.

The penalty for “lashon hara” in Biblical times was to be infected with tza’arat, an infectious disease mistranslated as “leprosy” which caused the afflicted person to be put into strict quarantine and his/her belongings all disinfected. The quarantine also served the purpose of separating the gossiping yenta from “infecting” others with malicious speech.

I do not think the comparison with Limbaugh and Maher is possible. Bill Maher is on a pay cable channel that is not available until you pay for it. Rush is on free AM radio. Maher has no sponsors but the subscriptions of the viewers and Rush pursues sponsors. Not even close.

You’re being facetious , of course. But there *is* an asterisk to the “nobody can forgive you except the person you’ve wronged’ rule: if you’ve tried several times to sincerely ask for forgiveness, and the person does not grant it, you can be forgiven.

Here’s some commentary about it:

Are the Koch Brothers Funding Rush Limbaugh?

Limbaugh is, fundamentally, a mouthpiece for conservative propaganda. He’s not a researcher. He’s not a grassroots organizer. He’s a mouthpiece. And where would he be without propaganda to spout? He has to get his ideas from somewhere. He can’t feed the right-wing echo chamber that’s hijacking our democracy if someone isn’t feeding him first. That’s where the Kochs come in.

Americans for Prosperity, the Heritage Foundation, the Federalist Society, Manhattan Institute: the list of Koch-backed groups goes on and on. And when such groups badmouth Social Security, say, or worker rights, that gives people like Limbaugh something to talk about.

Well, the bottom line after reading about this is that Israel won’t let a nuclear weapon come to existence in Iran. Unless Iran act proactively Israel will strike the nuclear research facilities before this is allowed to happen. So Iran has three choices: either open up their facilities to 24/7 inspections; cancel their nuclear development program; or wait for an eventual air strike on said facilities. In consideration of Iran’s track record? I think we’re looking at an eventual air strike and destruction of their nuclear research facilities. I’d like them to prove me wrong. That’s my half assed reading on this and not my own outline.

There is nothing rational about any of this. Iran is shaking its balls at Israel and by proxy the west, and because we fear their intentions we’re willing to play a fools game of military escalation. If the religiously driven minds in Iran were more rational they’d open the doors to UN inspectors and be honest with what they show. Their arrogance and religiously based confidence shouldn’t be allowed to put their country and the millions of innocents living there in the sights of a nuclear power backed by another, larger nuclear power that has already shown its willingness to use military to make a point.

This is what pisses me off about religion, it makes leaders take chances that only fools would consider.

Are the Koch Brothers Funding Rush Limbaugh?

That’s taking things a bit far. The MBF really has a place on that point, because both parties have long operated think tanks and activist groups. That does not mean that the Koch brothers are responsible for Rush Limbaugh unless their company were to advertise on his show, or they directly gave him money. For them to fund a think tank that subsequently produces a paper Rush does a show about does not make them responsible for Rush’s rants during said show.

re: #128 Dark_Falcon

I’m afraid you missed the larger point (or have you forgotten about Heartland’s plan to indoctrinate schoolchildren with climate-change-denying garbage?). The Koch Brothers (whom I thought you refused to comment on for “work reasons”) bankroll practically all the bigotry, homophobia, racism, and misogyny we see from the right-wing today. All to keep Americans downtrodden and divided, fighting each other instead of the pollutocrat robber-barons whose overprivileged asses Teddy Roosevelt would have kicked into another dimension.

St Louis Tribune has quite the editorial - the legislators should read it. Here’s the last few paragraphs:

The larger issues involved in his rant — an obsession with other people’s personal lives — is something that neither he nor others of his ilk would want to explain. Mr. Limbaugh has endured this kind of speculation himself; a man who thinks of himself as “the intellectual engine of the conservative movement” should have a higher regard for individual liberty.

Mr. Limbaugh is a brilliant broadcaster who discovered that there were vast amounts of money to be made in playing to the fears and insecurities of talk radio’s largely older, white male demographic.

He spawned hundreds of imitators, broadcasters for whom sincerity comes with a dollar sign, including an entire cable news network.

And because this demographic is a core Republican constituency, he succeeded in not just coarsening American political discourse, but in twisting the party beyond recognition. It’s a remarkable achievement.
