Wingnut Week in Review: Breitbart.com’s Epic Fail

A spectacular slow motion face plant
Wingnuts • Views: 38,182

When Andrew Breitbart passed away, the editors and bloggers who made his “Big” sites what they are today swore a blood oath to carry on his legacy of devastating BOMBSHELL stings, and their inept fumbling attempts to do so have produced a classic week of wingnut comedy.

Feeding the Media

When he had a hit job ready to launch, one of Breitbart’s techniques was to release it in stages a day or so apart, instead of dumping everything out there at once. This technique is what made his (and James O’Keefe’s) ACORN sting videos so effective; you might have been able to say one was an isolated incident, and two a coincidence, but when they just kept coming, and each one seemed more incriminating than the last, it had an undeniable effect. Even Jon Stewart once did a sketch very critical of ACORN, giving total credence to the videos. (We now know that much of what we saw in those videos had been edited and manipulated to create exactly this effect, the first example of what became known as “Breitbarting.”)

Breitbart didn’t try to conceal this “cascading bombshells” tactic, he bragged about it openly, and compared it to “feeding the media” like dogs so they’d keep coming back for more.

And that’s what we saw the mini-Breits trying to emulate this week, with the BOMBSHELL revelation that 21 years ago, Barack Obama hugged a famous black professor.

Stage One: The Dreaded Alinsky Play

The first stage, to set the scene and prep the media dogs to expect more, was released on Sunday evening so it would get into the beginning of the weekly news cycle: the revelation that Barack Obama had once attended a play about community organizer Saul Alinsky. It was a nothing-burger, but people who knew how Breitbart worked knew there would soon be more.

Stage Two: The Angry Black Radical

The second stage was the video of Obama introducing Prof. Derrick Bell, accompanied by a campaign to paint Bell as a dangerous angry black radical. Unfortunately for the heirs of Andrew, they got scooped on this one by Buzzfeed, who released the video shortly before breitbart.com did.

Stage Three: The Sinister Conspiracy

The third stage of the BOMBSHELL was supposed to be the tiny snippet of video they posted, showing Prof. Charles Ogletree saying, “Of course we hid this throughout the 2008 campaign.” This was going to be their proof that not only was President Obama a dangerous angry black radical, he was also part of a conspiracy to hide his angry black radical connections.

Boom!

But then, it all went horribly wrong.

The multi-stage BOMBSHELL blew up in their own faces, because although Prof. Derrick Bell’s “Critical Race Theory” is certainly controversial, picturing him as an angry radical was never going to fly. As the first tenured black law professor at Harvard, Bell dedicated his life to understanding and fighting against racism; some would argue with his theories and analysis, but he lived an honorable, thoughtful, exemplary life and left the world a better, more interesting place when he died.

The third stage of the BOMBSHELL, the short video clip that supposedly caught Prof. Ogletree admitting to a roomful of people that he’d participated in a conspiracy to usurp the office of the Presidency, turned out to be a laughable attempt at deceptive editing — literally laughable, because Ogletree was actually making a joke. The longer clip we posted at LGF shows that he was referring to the people in the video looking much older than they did in 1991, and joking that he “hid the video” to keep them from getting mad at him.

And that dreaded Alinsky play never made it into the mainstream news at all.

One of the Biggest Internet Screwups Ever

But the coup de grace, the cheese that completes this half-pound hamburger of right wing fail, was our exclusive scoop that when they redesigned breitbart.com, Andrew’s brain trust actually succeeded in breaking every single one of the millions of links to their websites that had been posted on the Internet before this week.

The links are all still broken as I write this. Every link to a “Big” site on every website and search engine in the world. All broken.

The only thing achieved with this week's string of BOMBSHELLS is the stringing out of my laughter.

Can I have a Malkin Word Salad instead of fries?

And look, this is a guy whose associations with people who believed in liberation theology, as you expose during the 2008 election cycle, Sean, and who embraced someone who believe in the radical extreme theory, called critical race theory, which blamed white people for everyone's guilt, which is poisonously anti-Semitic has never been scrutinized, by reporters who will send an entire armies down to Texas, to go literally turn over rocks to try and smear.

Farah: God Sent Earthquake to Punish America for Moral 'Lawlessness'

When that earthquake finally hit, I was chatting on instant messenger with Sean Hannity.

Within seconds, we both messaged each other, simultaneously, both in jest, ‘It’s the end of the world.’ This is the thought that went through the minds of many in an instant, our world was shaken and when our world shakes there is really only one power in the universe who can do that, and it’s the Creator.

Why does God do that? I believe that He shakes us up in small ways and big ways as a sign to us of the consequences of disobedience and indifference to Him and His law. It’s really that simple, He wants us to return to covenant, which means living under His rules. Given the extent of lawlessness in our world today, I think you can safely expect many more signs of that kind and even more ominous ones.

33 Prononymous, rogue demon hunter  Fri, Mar 9, 2012 2:40:01pm

Those bitty-barts are living in a fantasy land.

The best part is that they will continue to bash their heads against this particular wall since they don't seem to understand the critical point: the claim that Obama is a radical is a complete nonstarter. The public wasn't impressed with the claims about Wright or Ainsky. And they aren't going to be impressed now with Bell. If the bitty-barts had a clue they would realize that Obama's actions as president even further destroy this little game of guilt by association.

Fortunately, they won't get a clue and we will have many months of unintentional comedy ahead as they spin their wheels.

I still can't believe they screwed up all their links and haven't fixed them yet. According to Quantcast's data they flat-lined on March 5 (more here). Netcraft shows them on a new server with the last change around the same time.

My guess is that they somehow decided to switch production servers without any sort of soft launch/staging/testing, and apparently without any versioning or backup in place (or they would've had the old site back up by now). It's like someone just decided to flip a switch and—*POOF*—several years' worth of valuable links disappear. That's utter insanity for a site with that kind of traffic because....well, because exactly what happened can happen.

The ineptitude boggles the mind.

no, it will simply serve to validate the point of view already held by those who think he is. and it will gain attention and air play, which was also what Breitbart was about. As it was pointed out earlier, he was in it for the money, his disciples are in it for the cause.

[Link: prospect.org...]

From the beginning of Breitbart's enterprise, race-baiting was a key element of his attack on Barack Obama, one that continues even after his death. And he always had plenty of company, from Glenn Beck saying Obama "has a deep-seated hatred of white people," to Rush Limbaugh's repeated insistence to his white listeners that Obama was motivated by racial hatred in everything he did. "Obama's entire economic program is reparations," Limbaugh proclaimed. "The days of [minorities] not having any power are over, and they are angry," he said. "And they want to use their power as a means of retribution. That's what Obama's about, gang." When in 2009 he found a story about a white kid getting beaten up by a black kid on a school bus, Limbaugh said, "In Obama's America, the white kids now get beat up with the black kids cheering, 'Yay, right on, right on, right on, right on.'" And yes, he did that last part in an exaggerated "black" accent.

The message is always the same: Obama and the blacks are mad, and they're coming for you. Yet people like the Breitbart folks and Limbaugh have two problems. First, they're running out of material. There aren't any more shocking revelations to be had. The best they can do is try to make mountains of racial resentment out of the most innocuous molehills, like the fact that Obama supported Derrick Bell's effort to diversify the faculty when he was a law student. And second, by now anyone who can be convinced that Obama is a secret Black Panther never thought otherwise. The guy has been president for three years. Americans are pretty familiar with him. He hasn't actually started herding white people into concentration camps, and it's an awfully tough sell to tell people that he might any day now.

This is a version of the larger problem conservatives have as we get into the 2012 election. The argument many of them will be making, in various forms, is this: Forget about what Obama has actually done. That doesn't tell you anything. Let me tell you a story about his secret desires, his wicked thoughts, his venomous heart. That's what your decision should be based on. You hear it from media bloviators, you hear it from interest groups, like the NRA screeching that if he's re-elected Obama will outlaw guns, and you hear it from Mitt Romney, who is forever claiming that deep down Obama doesn't much love America and wants to turn it into a European-style social-welfare state. Who are you going to believe, them, me, or or your own eyes?

Watching this stuff is immensely dispiriting, I'll grant you. But it should be some consolation that it doesn't seem to be working.

Probably overly-optimistic, especially once the general election gets into full swing, but I guess we can hope for the best.

Sick and wrong.

Pineapple does not belong on pizza. This is not negotiable.

You don't mix oil and water.
You don't mix politics and religion.
You don't mix drinking and driving.
You don't mix sweets with savouries.

Fruit should not be heated. Eat your pineapple cold, after the pizza, with the rest of the fruit. Otherwise you may as well be melting the cheese over your ice cream. Leave them separate, as God intended.

Nix on all the other condiments.
Burgers = mustard + ketchup = cheese, or mustard + mayo + cheese, or chili + cheese

Mayo on a burger?
Sacrilege!

The only acceptable condiments for burgers:
Sharp chedddar cheese, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, BBQ sauce (or ketchup - never both), dill pickles, sauteed onions, lettuce, tomatoes.

One acceptable deviation is sauteed mushrooms with swiss cheese.

Search still on for suspect in Grays Harbor Co. Courthouse attack

MONTESANO, Grays Harbor County — Authorities are searching for the man who stabbed a judge and shot a sheriff's deputy this afternoon in the Grays Harbor County Courthouse.

The judge and deputy are in satisfactory condition. The deputy was shot with her own handgun, authorities said.

The man being sought has been identified as Michael Thomas. Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Rick Scott said that Thomas is a white male, about 6 feet tall, with brown hair. He said that the suspect was last seen wearing a blue button-down shirt, black pants and possibly carrying a black briefcase and a handgun.
[...]
Last December, the Grays County Superior Court filed suit against the county and its Board of Commissioners alleging the court was systematically denied full funding for years — including the funding to implement security.

The complaint says it is the only courthouse in the state with more than one judge and that "it's totally without courtroom security."

Anyone can thus enter the courthouse carrying weapons, the complaint states, adding that in the past two years, two attorneys were assaulted and a defendant "charged" one of the judges. The suit also says that a judge received a death threat during trial but was not provided with adequate security.

I love Brusselsprouts. Sprouts, taters, carrots, parsnips in a pan. Toss with oil, salt pepper, basalmic vinegar. Put in a large roasting pan and put a whole chicken on top. Bake at 450 for about an hour and a half.

Pretty interesting stuff here about people who do and do not like sprouts:

[Link: www.bbc.co.uk...]

Brussels sprouts - for some people these miniature cabbages are the highlight of their Christmas dinner, others shudder at the mere thought of them. Scientists now know that not all people experience tastes in the same way. This is mainly down to the number of taste buds on your tongue.

377 Our Precious Bodily Fluids  Fri, Mar 9, 2012 5:40:36pm

Speaking of Hitchens, this may have already been posted somewhere, but here's a 2006 article he wrote about Joseph Kony (before it was cool //hipster)

In October, the Lord of the Flies was hit, in his medieval redoubt, by a message from the 21st century. Joseph Kony and four other leaders of the L.R.A. were named in the first arrest warrants ever issued by the new International Criminal Court (I.C.C.). If that sounds like progress to you, then consider this. The whereabouts of Kony are already known: he openly uses a satellite phone from a base across the Ugandan border in southern Sudan. Like the United States, Sudan is not a signatory to the treaty that set up the I.C.C. And it has sponsored the L.R.A. because the Ugandan government—which is an I.C.C. signatory—has helped the people of southern Sudan fight against the theocracy in Khartoum, the same theocracy that has been sponsoring the genocide against Muslim black Africans in Darfur. Arrest warrants look pretty flimsy when set against ruthless cynicism of this depth and intensity.

Visited the one museum in Denver (Wings Over the Rockies?) and they have the whole Century series there. Got to sit in the F-4 cockpit as well and was told by the docent that I was essentially too tall to be a fighter pilot (6' 2") for those planes.

The only time I saw the Thunderbirds was the early 90s when they were flying F-16s.

Visited the one museum in Denver (Wings Over the Rockies?) and they have the whole Century series there. Got to sit in the F-4 cockpit as well and was told by the docent that I was essentially too tall to be a fighter pilot (6' 2") for those planes.

Of SF interest they also had one of the full-size X-Wing models there at the time as well. :)

I saw them when they had the F-4s, T-38s, and F-16s.

I cut up an apple every night for the local population of cottontail rabbits. They're pretty adorable, but I tell myself I'm just getting them used to the routine in case the end of the world hits and I need a supply of fresh meat.

Something amazing has happened to me & the wildlife. Blue birds, at my office. A father & son, or an elder and younger. I give them ritz cracker or plain cereal (rotate it) they buzz my head & come when I call "BLUE!"

It's so very interesting & cool.

Most people can but this isn't about "most" people. Most people don't care if Rush has a radio show or not. This is about activists looking for targets. Everybody loses in this pissing contest.

You my friend will be on the wrong side of history with your weird support of the bad players. Carry on.

There's nothing bad about Rush losing his show (which he won't anyway).

Cool. One of the renters at my last place in Montecito used to take the spiders he'd capture in his apartment out to the driveway and watch as the lizards scampered out to eat them. Admittedly this was substantially creepier.

To expand on this beyond 140 chars, sexist jokes from a comedian who otherwise supports women's rights are far less offensive than 3-day misogynistic rants from a demagogue who actively works for laws and policies meant to destroy women's rights.

One of these things is not like the other.

re: #512 Interesting Times

You know, when I hear all these arguments that speech can never harm, etc., I remember that Julius Streicher was actually sentenced to death in Nuremberg simply for speech. I'm against death penalty, but I agree in principle that he committed crimes.

“...For his 25 years of speaking, writing and preaching hatred of the Jews, Streicher was widely known as ‘Jew-Baiter Number One.’ In his speeches and articles, week after week, month after month, he infected the German mind with the virus of anti-Semitism, and incited the German people to active persecution... Streicher's incitement to murder and extermination at the time when Jews in the East were being killed under the most horrible conditions clearly constitutes persecution on political and racial grounds in connection with war crimes, as defined by the Charter, and constitutes a crime against humanity.”

ALL YOUR BROKEN LINK ARE BELONG TO US!!

Petition to pull Limbaugh off AFN gathers steam
By Rick Maze - Staff writer
Posted : Friday Mar 9, 2012 17:24:58 EST

A petition drive to get conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh banned from Armed Forces Network radio has collected more than 19,300 online signatures in five days, and appears well on the way toward acquiring the 25,000 signatures required by April 3 to get the White House to directly address the issue.

The petition was launched Sunday after Limbaugh repeatedly mocked a Georgetown University Law School student over three days, calling her a “slut” and a “prostitute” because she advocated that birth control be covered by employer health insurance. The petition is registered at the White House’s We The People website.

A White House response would not mean automatic removal of Limbaugh’s three-hour radio show from the military’s overseas radio network. Defense Department officials have said they have no plans to remove Limbaugh from the AFN schedule...

Because you say so? The mechanism by which everyone loses hasn't really been explained, except for the raw assertion that society will be somewhat poorer without voices like Limbaugh's. That the average person's right to free speech and assembly is through the boycott being demonstrated to have weight and effectiveness is somehow being cast by you as a negative, which is on it's face a rather elitist sentiment.

To be accurate: Louis CK cancelled the gig, probably because he didn't want to get caught up in the partisan zealot crossfire. He has too much to lose and voluntarily stepped down to save his career. I'm hoping he'll be on O&A this week to talk about it.

Lol, it won't hurt anyone's career if a person is adept enough to avoid the torpedos.
