Mitt Romney in Missouri: ‘Planned Parenthood, We’re Going to Get Rid of That’

Romney’s fully enlisted in the war on women’s rights
Politics • Views: 32,831

Speaking today in Kirkwood, Missouri, Mitt Romney clearly announced his intention to destroy Planned Parenthood.

Also on Romney’s hit list: two other social conservative targets, the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

And his plan to lower gas prices: drill the living hell out of the United States, environment be damned. Just drill baby drill 'til he can’t drill no more.

One on one, he detailed his plan to lower gas prices.

“We’re going to start drilling again in the gulf, we’re going to drill in the outer continental shelf, we’re going to drill in North Dakota, Oklahoma and Texas. That communicates to the world that there will be more supply coming from the U.S. And that affects the price of gasoline,” said Romney.

As for ways to reduce debt, he suggests a few cuts.

“The test is pretty simple. Is the program so critical, it’s worth borrowing money from china to pay for it? And on that basis of course you get rid of Obamacare, that’s the easy one. Planned Parenthood, we’re going to get rid of that. The subsidy for Amtrack, I’d eliminate that. The National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities,” he said.

Romney knows this, he's just lying to the rubes.

Drill baby drill won't lower gas prices

According to a 2009 study from the government's Energy Information Administration, opening up waters that are currently closed to drilling off the East Coast, West Coast and the west coast of Florida would yield an extra 500,000 barrels a day by 2030.

The world currently consumes 89 million barrels a day, and by then would likely be using over 100 million barrels.

After OPEC got done adjusting its production to reflect the increased American output, gas prices might drop a whopping 3 cents a gallon, the study said.

“The test is pretty simple. Is the program so critical, it’s worth borrowing money from china to pay for it?"

Not mentioned: The shitload of money we've had to borrow and are stilling borrowing from China to pay for the last Republican administration's two wars.

More wingnut pablum and red meat for the increasingly extremist Republican base. After Romney's current stint playing the role of wingnut I'm afraid he's attained a permanent condition of severely conservative. Although now he's starting to mimic a severe wingnut.

NEH gone? Fuck you, Romney. That has nothing, nothing to do with balancing the budget.

Obama requested $154 million for the NEH budget. Million.

You're not going to balance the budget by cutting millions. And you're going to decrease the quality of education in the country by cutting NEH.

Fucking stupid pandering crap bastard.

Drill baby drill won't lower gas prices

The Right's convinced that "signals" are what lower gas prices. That if Willard gets into office and starts signing off bills opening every spec of land to oil drilling, the speculators will begin planning for the influx of new oil, driving the price of a barrel down. Boom, "cheap oil" is back again.

How does that work again?

This prolonged primary season is pretty much killing his chances in the general. The longer it goes, the farther to the right he has to go, the more impossible it's going to become in the fall to make that mad dash to the center.

I'm curious as to how playing up the stereotypes of the South like "cheesy grits", NASCAR and saying "y'all" is respectful of the South's oft called diversity? One moment they're saying "hey we're not all like that" yet they tolerate someone like Romney who did his darnedest to perform the cheesiest imitation of a Southerner in recent political history. Does anyone actually go into NYC and start imitating your average Irish-American New Yorker accent?

27 simoom  Tue, Mar 13, 2012 6:37:09pm

There was a Washington Examiner story today about new CBO ACA estimates that had its price-tag essentially doubling. Other, more reputable news orgs covered the same CBO report as actually showing a small decrease in the costs. For example:

[Link: money.cnn.com...]

On Tuesday, the Congressional Budget Office released new estimates on the cost of subsidizing insurance coverage for millions of Americans.

The bottom line: The government's overall tab is expected to fall slightly over a decade. It is now projected to spend $1.083 trillion between 2012 and 2021. Last year, CBO's estimate was $1.131 trillion.

The reason I bring this up is because the Examiner piece was parroted all over the RW blogosphere, from National Review to Hot Air to Town Hall to Weasel Zippers to Michael Brendan Dougherty at Business Insider. The author of the Washington Examiner piece eventually posted an update, where he essentially offers a correction, all the while spinning at as an eleboration:

The CBO now projects that from 2012 through 2021 the federal government will spend $168 billion more on Medicaid than it expected last year, $97 billion less on subsidies for people to purchase insurance on government-run exchanges and $20 billion less on tax credits to small employers. That works out to a $51 billion increase in the gross cost of expanding coverage from what the CBO estimated a year ago. However, the CBO also expects the federal government to collect more revenue from penalties on individuals and employers, as well as other taxes. These revenue increases will more than offset the spending increases, according to the CBO, so it now expects the cost of Obamacare during those years to be $48 billion lower.

So far none of the folks who reposted his initial article have issued a correction/retraction. Honestly, I'd be surprised if the "ObamaCare will cost double" charge doesn't become a new article of faith among many on the Right.

Take notes, because these are the statements that will reduce his chances in the general.

Romney is not a fool. He is something worse: A smart guy pandering to fools. He is probably the sleaziest candidate in my memory of presidential politics, which includes such dis-luminaries as the pre-reform George Wallace.

There are actually some real parallels. Nothing in Wallace's public career or personal history before the late 50s suggested that he was a racist or anything but progressive, even liberal, by the standards of the time. Then he lost an election because of his opponent's race-baiting. He vowed he "would never be out-n*****ed again," and he rode a wave of segregationist frenzy into the Alabama's Governor's mansion. Wallace changed, or changed back, for the better later in his life, but he is most remembered for his promise of "segregation today, segregation tomorrow, and segregation forever." It's a hell of a legacy.

Exit polls initially showed Romney winning. Nate Silver warned about this at 538, saying the "social desirability bias" can play a role in these Southern states, with people giving the pollster the answer they think is "politically correct", while they voted someone else. As of now, CNN has already corrected its exit poll, now showing Santorum ahead. It is possible Romney may finish third in both states.

Let the fun continue, I say! I am currently a Democrat supporting Santorum and loving the spectacle, lol!

It’s all about freedom, she said, echoing everyone who thinks there’s nothing ironic about claiming that a country that’s “free” allows people’s bosses to dictate what medical care is available to them through insurance.

I've noticed that "freedom" to the GOP now seems to be something solely limited to business owners, with their employees being told they have one of two choices: suck it up or find another job. That they think an employer should have total control over his employee, from tip to toes, and any law that says otherwise is "unconstitutional."

100 researchok  Tue, Mar 13, 2012 7:12:33pm

It's campaign rhetoric, of the say anything, any time, to whomever needs to hear it.

And if Romney wants to present himself as something other than business as usual, he's doing a piss poor job of it.

FLASHBACK:

[Link: blogs.wsj.com...]

A top official at Bob Jones University, the Evangelical Christian school with a history of anti-Mormon rhetoric, plans to throw his weight behind Mormon presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.

Robert R. Taylor, dean of the university’s college of arts and sciences, said he believes the former Massachusetts governor is the only Republican candidate who both stands a chance of winning the White House and will reliably implement the anti-abortion, antigay marriage, pro-gun agenda of Christian conservatives.

“The fact that I’m seen as a Religious Right person would hopefully get others to step out for him,” Taylor said in an interview in Greenville, S.C., the university’s hometown.

Taylor’s endorsement, which he said he plans to announce in the near future, marks a stunning move for such a high-placed academic at Bob Jones University. In 2000, Bob Jones III, then president of the university, wrote a public letter that referred to Mormonism and Catholicism as “cults which call themselves Christian.”

[...]

This afternoon, Bob Jones III, chancellor of the university, told the Greenville News that he, too, is endorsing Romney. “This is all about beating Hillary [Clinton],” Jones told the newspaper. “And I just believe that this man has the credentials both personally and ideologically in terms of his view about what American government should be to best represent the rank and file of conservative Americans,” he said. “If it turns out to be [Rudy] Giuliani and Hillary we’ve got two pro-choice candidates, and that would be a disaster.” Jones, when asked whether Romney’s Mormon faith was a problem for him, replied: “What is the alternative? Hillary’s lack of religion or an erroneous religion?”

The same Bob Jones U that banned interracial dating and marriage until 2000. The lost tax-exempt status because of racist policies, after a protracted battle that ended with BJU arguing before the supreme court that interracial marriage is against the Bible.

The same Bob Jones III that once wrote:

[Link: lgbt-bju.org...]

I’m sure this will be greatly misquoted but it would not be a bad idea to bring the swift justice today that was brought in Israel’s day against murder and rape and homosexuality. I guarantee it would solve the problem post-haste if homosexuals were stoned, if murderers were immediately killed as the Bible commands.

And George Wallace was far from the only one who made a Faustian bargain. Strom Thurmond did pretty much the same thing, presenting himself as an arch-racist who tried a one-man filibuster of the Civil Rights movement, all the while, he was making payments to his illegitimate child who he had with a black servant. The South is dotted with racist politicians who know better, and who would probably not be racists if they lived elsewhere (anywhere!), but are forced by circumstances to be racists and reactionaries in order to win political office. While the behavior of Wallace and Thurmond were inexcusable, it is southern society that created them and caused them to be that way.

And, they are afraid of the truth.

Here is the truth - the US is a very well explored portion of the Earth's surface. Geophysicists, geologists, and petroleum engineers know where to go and how to produce the resources. Oil companies are highly profitable because they know what prices they need to drill/produce.

This is a very well established industry. When prices of crude go up oil companies can afford to produce more marginal resources. When prices go down they can't. It's called "economics".

One would think a businessman as brilliant as Romney is supposed to be would know that.

Oh, he probably does, but his wingnut audience refuses to believe that the US isn't the apple in God's eye and is not eternally endowed with all the cheap oil Americans can consume.

Romney Ignites Democratic Base

Mitt Romney bores Republicans, but he is galvanizing progressive support for President Obama. Romney’s attacks on immigrants, refusal to challenge Rush Limbaugh’s calling women sluts, and Dick Cheney-like rhetoric about waging war against Iran have bolstered the President among three key constituencies disappointed with his first term: Latinos, young people, and anti-war activists.

California is winner take all by congressional district, which means that while Romney will take most of the delegates along the densely populated coast there's still room for Santorum to pick up a few inland areas like Fresno. I still think that Romney is going to run away with both the traditionally Democratic areas and establishment GOP Orange County though.

Sound enough analysis, but I don't think it'll get that far. I think it ends on April 24th, when New York and Pennsylvania vote. But Mitt needs a solid win in my home state first. March 20th will be a hard fought day.

Roy Moore rides horse, voter wave to cusp of victory in chief justice race

Moore was hoping to regain a position he lost in 2003 when a state panel expelled him from office for failing to comply with a federal court order to remove a monument to the Ten Commandments that he had placed in the Alabama Judicial Building. Moore argued — and continues to maintain — that he had a right to acknowledge God and that following the order would have been a violation of his oath to the Constitution.

IF Santorum wins Illinois (I'm assuming Missouri is his), and
IF Gingrich drops before the end of the month,

then it may not be so certain. If both those happen, Santorum will have about as many delegates as Romney headed into April. And April opens with Maryland and Wisconsin. I've not seen any Maryland polls, but right now Santorum's the leader. (more than a month out that's worth a bit less than spit in the wind, but it's still the number to hand.)

The end of an era:

Encyclopedia Britannica Consigns Print Edition To History

In 1768, the Enlightenment was in full swing, and the printing press was being employed liberally as a method of disseminating knowledge among the (then still relatively few) literate and learned. Few general-purpose reference works existed (the earliest came only a few years before), however, with much essential knowledge split between many smaller, more specific volumes. On Optics, or On the Use of Leeches, or Travels Among the Savages of the New World, that sort of thing. That year, the Encyclopaedia Britannica printed its first edition: three volumes comprising a compressed but useful near-totality of human knowledge.

It is difficult for us to conceive of, having grown up with reference works, and more difficult still for a new generation raised with the Internet and its promise of instant access to virtually any work or knowledge. So it is likewise strange to attempt to put in context the fact that 2010′s Encyclopaedia Britannica will be the last one printed. Some will stroke their chins, some will wail and tear their hair, some will shout for joy. But most, perhaps most tellingly, won’t care – indeed won’t ever notice.

Addressing supporters in Alabama, Newt Gingrich made an open call for the Republican nomination to be decided by a contested convention, with Mitt Romney blocked from winning a majority of delegates.

"So you have my promise, at a time when I hope this evening we have ended any news media talk of the inevitability of their handpicked candidate. at a time when we can forget about trying to nominate a Massachusetts moderate.

"And start talking about: When the primaries are over, and it's clear no one person has won, who would do a best job of representing America, governing, and winning the election against Barack Obama."

One thing that strikes me about the GOP nomination race, as the months have progressed, is how low of a % Ron Paul is getting.

And then it struck me why: The Overton Window.

IOW, Santorum and Gingrich have moved the majority of the voters - Romney got less than a third of the votes tonight - close enough to the old Paul support base (excluding the college-age-weed-lovers) to make Paul redundant. Gingrich is embracing elements of neo-confederacy, and is even jumping on the FED!! bandwagon, and Santorum has turned this election into a Crusade, so the only Paul voters they don't get are the before mentioned college-age-weed-lovers.

The GOP has indeed moved far to the right.

winning on the first ballot with 53% wouldn't be too pretty...

See. This is what I don't get. Only in the US is a win not a win. It doesn't matter if Romney only scraped by at the first ballot. There would be no food fight, the Republican Party will be mostly united. The storyline and actual political impact of Romney winning with 53% in Tampa, and winning with 66% is, for all intents and purposes, the same. The only good result is if there was a truly acrimonious fight between different factions of the GOP.

Romney will win California. No way we're going to give it to Newt or Little Rickey.

Dunno. Orange County sounds like Birmingham with designer sunglasses.

re: #342 engineer cat

before tonite, romney had 453 delegates. he's been getting an average of 40% of the vote, i think. 40% of the remaining delegates - including tonite - comes to about 600

600 + 453 = 1053

needed to nominate: 1144

somebody check my figures...

Romney's been getting a little over half, not 40%.

Yes, the low numbers are Big News, but overall is what matters. He's at about 53 or 54% of delegates so far.

That's why I mostly agreed with Dark Falcon above, and said the change only happens IF Santorum can win Illinois and IF Gingrich drops out. Sometime in April a lot of the states become winner take all instead of proportional. If Santorum's not in a position to capitalize, Romney's plurality is sufficient to win before the convention.

A Roman-era burial box inscribed “James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus” was reprieved from the scrapheap of history on Wednesday when a Jerusalem judge completely exonerated an Israeli antiquities collector who had been accused of forging it.

The verdict, delivered by Judge Aharon Farkash in a tiny, crowded courtroom in the Jerusalem District Courthouse, ended a seven-year ordeal for the accused, Oded Golan, 60, but it will do little to extinguish the decade-long scientific controversy over the authenticity of the limestone box which has raged since it was first displayed to the public at the Royal Ontario Museum in 2002.

It doesn't prove the ossuary to be authentic, but I don't see what's the big deal is. James is mentioned as Jesus' brother by Josephus, and this passage was quoted as early as 2nd century by Origen (who also wrote that Josephus did not believe Jesus to be the Christ, thus showing he had an access to the un-interpolated version).

I know Mittens is supposed to be less insane than Newt and Santo, but his rhetoric doesn't sound any different from their's.

Downdings for "frothy".

He can stop being "frothy" to the Lizards when he apologizes for comparing homosexuality to bestiality.

Fiscal conservatism sounds a whole heck of a lot like social conservatism.

I don't believe Jesus existed as a historical personage. Except for a couple of isolated passages that seem to be referring to an earthly Jesus but probably aren't, and other passages that are clearly later interpolations, Paul and the other early Christian writers have absolutely nothing to say about an earthly Jesus. Their Jesus is a full-blown divine dying/rising savior entity. Read the description of Jesus' blood payment for sin in Hebrews. It bears no resemblance whatsoever to an earthly crucifixion--it is taking place in a heavenly realm. And the Gospels are basically midrashic fiction--allegorical tales of the divine Christ. Belief in an earthly Jesus started when people began taking those stories literally.

If Josephus did actually write something like "James the brother of Jesus" it was more likely in the sense of spiritual brotherhood--"brothers of the Lord."
