Rachel Maddow’s interview with leading Republican climate change denier Sen. James Inhofe is a real jaw-dropper. Inhofe tells an amazing amount of lies about climate science and global warming, but perhaps the most outrageous claim he makes is that science curriculum in public schools should be determined not by scientists, but by … Republican politicians. Yes, he really does say this, after accusing schools of “brainwashing” his children.

This is the face of the anti-science right wing.

Irony can be so ironic. A day after cancelling his keynote address at the Heartland climate denial conference because he felt “under the weather,” Republican Senator Jim Inhofe today insisted his sickness was due to a toxic algae bloom...

Environmental officials in Oklahoma sent out a warning today about major blue-green algal blooms around the Northeastern portion of the state, saying this is the largest bloom the area has ever seen. Because “toxins harmful to humans and animals can be produced in some algae blooms,” it is strongly recommended you do not swim in places where there are visible blooms. Ironically, Inhofe, who has chaired the Senate Environment Committee, didn’t know that, but even his teenage granddaughter figured it out.

“I didn’t think anything about it,” he said, recalling that he had encouraged his 13-year-old granddaughter to join him in the water but she declined.

“She didn’t want to get in that green stuff.”

Maybe she should be Senator.

Having a near-professional anti-science climate denier is a mistake...no one except a climate literate comedian should “debate” a denier since professional deniers are so fluent at lying and obfuscating that there is no way an individual can keep up with debunking or even keeping straight their lies and misrepresentations. Only a comedian can come back with appropriate absurdities.

That's what I was concerned about. When are rational people going to start realizing this isn't a game? It is deathly serious. I don't care if he's a doddering old fool, Imhofe is dangerous and evil.

A middle school teacher who read to his students from Ender’s Game is on “administrative leave” because a parent complained to the school that Orson Scott Card’s classic novel is “pornographic.” The parent also went to the local police, who have not yet pressed criminal charges against the teacher, according to the Aiken, SC Standard.

Children’s advocacy group Commonsensemedia.org has recommended Ender’s Game for children aged 12 and up — and the child whose mother complained to the school and to the police was aged 14. But at the same time, the school has a policy requiring teachers to “preview” any supplemental material they present in class, so school officials can check for offensive ideas or themes, and the unnamed teacher did not do that in this case.

BTW, David Wojick - the guy the Heartland Institute hired to design AGW curriculum, has worked with Inhofe for years. I had a running argument with Wojick about whether or not Intelligent Design is a scientific theory. He claims that it is. Think about that. Someone who says that ID is a scientific theory is who Inhofe thinks should be fighting the EPA "brainwashing" of his grandchildren.

Essentially the "Gish Gallop" of creationist fame. Dump a bunch of stuff into a debate of surface credibility so fast that the opponent has no chance or time to properly address it.

Wonderful (though spurious) debate tactic. Crappy science, and a crappy basis for decision making. But it sells to those who wish to be convinced.

How telling is it that enough of the OK electorate keeps sending him back to the Senate?

i read it with my boys. we had really good conversations about preemptive strikes and the bush doctrine. they were both impressed with orson scott card and we discussed mormon themes within the book as well. btw, they are making a movie and harrison ford is supposed to be graff.

My initial impression is that the parent heard the book title, saw it on some list he got from his pastor (or via the internet) and then literally went off half-cocked. And half expect that the parent is one of those who seek insult whenever possible.

This is the general problem with most of the TV shows (and radio talking heads). Even if the host is well meaning and otherwise well educated, someone can come in and talk about a subject so specialized that the host has no real tools to counter any misinformation.

Problem is, if Maddow had asked an atmospheric scientist to come in and participate with the actual interview then Inhofe would like have backed out. It is highly unlikely he would share a stage with anybody who might make him look bad.

Back when I was a teacher, I had parents who didn't want their kids reading Othello for religious reasons (seriously). So I gave their kids an alternate reading assignment - Margaret Atwood's A Handmaid's Tale...I figured the parents never paid attention to what the books were actually about and that their kids might learn something from Atwood. Only once did I have a mother actually get a copy for herself and read it...she came up to me after and said, "I see what you did there, but it is a very good book."

Breitbart’s detractors would claim his statements appeared disingenuous, hypocritical — and they were right. In the three days leading up to Breitbart’s death, the discussion on Twitter became all about me. I finally had to respond.

He's the face of the campaign. He knows that IC suffers from some credibility troubles. So he should know better than anybody to stay away from anything.

That might be part of it. And the comment that Jesus had about children belonging to the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 19:14) There's a belief among the Pentecostal/Evangelical branches that True Christians™ should be like children and put their lives in Father God's hands.

There's also a long tradition among the Baptists and Anabaptists (Quakers, for example) that pastors and preachers don't need lots of academic qualifications. All they need is a call from God. And if book learning is not a requirement for a preacher, then why do his sheep need learning, too?

Fortunately, the Quakers and others were not anti-intellectual. The same cannot be said for most conservative Christians nowadays, alas.

This is why many Republicans would love to see the public education system be financially gutted and instead have the private education system be government-subsidized.

Since private schools can select student admittance based on the family's financial status and academic ability, this would create a further divide between the "haves" and "have nots" in our society. In addition, private schools would not be restricted from proselytizing religious ideology and promoting corporate-funded anti-environmental propaganda in the science classroom.

I'm sorry but that interview made Rachel seem like a dunce. I find it hard to believe that she wasn't prepare for his moronic attempts to deflect and ignore her questions and say whatever he wanted. And his constant patronizing Rachel and all Democrats with his swarthy complements should have caused her to blow her top.

But she didn't do that and it was a disaster for her cred.

And of course, she didn't even ask him the obvious question about why he thinks god will keep the human race from destroying the climate? Her false attempt at civility kept the interview from going anyplace as she waited out his blowhard statements.

I tweeted her that I was so disappointed. Of course, no answer either personal or generic to her fans. I'm generally agreed that polite but first discourse is the way to go but when you have a guy of such immense stupidity and ignorance on your show, you tear him up.
