Rachel Maddow on Yet Another Right Wing Fake Outrage

The President once said he wants America to become more generous - the horror!
Wingnuts • Views: 38,013

Would you believe that when I helped launch Pajamas Media, one of the goals was to create a site that would transcend left-right politics, promote environmentalism and science, and allow free discussion of ideas without ideological blinders?

I know, it’s almost impossible to believe, if you look at the pure right wing propaganda that PJ Media constantly churns out these days. The site has turned into World Net Daily Lite — another anti-science, anti-Obama mouthpiece for the Tea Party base, promoting conspiracy theories, climate change denial, and even creationism, and giving a voice to some of the worst liars and racists of the right, people like Robert Stacy McCain.

It’s disappointing to see it, but apparently the money was better on the loony side.

Rachel Maddow highlights one of the totally ridiculous fake outrages that erupted this week, and sure enough, PJ Media was right there helping push it out to the far right base, along with Jim “Dim” Hoft and the rest of the hate-obsessed wingnut blogosphere. Sad.

How dare that Kenyan Muslim force us to be generous! If we want to give only to charities that discriminate against gays, single parents, and whatever other group we personally hate, that's our right!

Just the kind of thing I was wondering about this morning! I know you've talked a little bit about it before but what went wrong? Was is an organic problem of certain personalities or cliques took over. Did the financial backers push for a partisan agenda?

GWB:

As our Founding Fathers worked to develop the framework of our Nation, Abigail Adams wrote to her husband: "I long to hear that you have declared an independency -- and by the way in the new Code of Laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors." An early advocate of women's rights, a farm and financial manager, and the mother of an American President, John Quincy Adams, Abigail Adams is one of many American women who helped establish the strength and vitality of our Nation. During Women's History Month, we recognize the generations of American women whose important contributions continue to shape our Nation and enrich our society.

---

I also appreciate the prayers of many of my fellow Americans. Many times layman and leader alike says, Mr. President, we pray for you, and for that I'm most grateful. It does remind me that I think there's a great awakening in America; people are rediscovering the inspiration of faith in their lives, and the importance of faith in our society. Faith gives our lives dignity, and faith gives our lives direction. Faith makes our nation more just and more generous, and welcoming.

Why did Abigail Adams hate America?

Here's the complete letter:

MARCH 31, 1776
ABIGAIL ADAMS TO JOHN ADAMS

"I long to hear that you have declared an independency. And, by the way, in the new code of laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make, I desire you would remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors.

"Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands.

"Remember, all men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation.

"That your sex are naturally tyrannical is a truth so thoroughly established as to admit of no dispute; but such of you as wish to be happy willingly give up -- the harsh tide of master for the more tender and endearing one of friend.

"Why, then, not put it out of the power of the vicious and the lawless to use us with cruelty and indignity with impunity?

"Men of sense in all ages abhor those customs which treat us only as the (servants) of your sex; regard us then as being placed by Providence under your protection, and in imitation of the Supreme Being make use of that power only for our happiness."

TOWARD A MORE Generous Nation
December 25, 1988|Bruce Sievers | Bruce Sievers is the executive director of the Walter and Elise Haas Fund

SAN FRANCISCO — The "thousand points of light" invoked by Vice President George Bush during the 1988 campaign seemed to suggest an alternative to the heavy hand of government in meeting social needs--a multitude of charitable organizations and partnerships among nonprofits, businesses and the public sector.

There is something beguiling about the image of bright sources of energy, commitment and compassion scattered throughout our social landscape. Most Americans probably share President-elect Bush's enthusiasm for the idea of pluralistic voluntary service, fueled by altruistic contributions, as a way of helping our neighbors. We like the values of freedom, charity and decentralized power it represents. And we like the fact that it works, a symbol of the generous, can-do American spirit...

The Virtue of Generosity
DONALD DEMARCO

Generosity inspires gratitude, and gratitude inspires generosity. God is generous to us and our generosity, as St. Paul tells us, “gives proof of our gratitude towards God” (2 Cor. 9:11).

In gratitude we are human; in generosity we are divine: "You received without pay, give without pay" (Mt. 10:8).

An admirer of the great German composer, Johannes Brahms, left him 1,000 pounds in his will. Upon learning about the bequest, Brahms was deeply moved. "It touches me most deeply and intimately," he wrote to a friend. "All exterior honors are nothing in comparison." Then, in the very next sentence, he informed his friend that since he did not need the money, he was "enjoying it in the most agreeable manner, by taking pleasure in its distribution."

Generosity: Virtue In Civil Society (Hardback) | Cato Institute Store

About the Book

It is often assumed that because the contemporary welfare state is generous, its critics must therefore lack generosity, as well as compassion. Tibor R. Machan, a distinguished moral philosopher, demonstrates why that is a mistaken notion. He places generosity among the human virtues and shows why virtue requires moral choice rather than coercion. He argues that generosity can only be cultivated in freedom because there is no virtue in a compulsory act. This book is a valuable contribution to an important and continuing debate.

There are many different interpretations of generosity. Many see it as static while most see it as virtue to attain or continually exceed our own standards. Generosity is a virtue and one that must be constantly worked on and maintained. To that end, a young Barrack Obama is reflecting upon a virtue pondered by civilized men for 1000s of years.

Which is the one major advantage they have. They are after power pure and simple. It is very difficult for people who have other goals in mind to oppose them. The 'ideologues and toadies' can usually outflank the good guys because they have no limits on what they're willing to do in order to win power.

It's rather like a war where one side is wiling to use weapons of mass destruction and the other isn't. The extra firepower wins. Of course it leaves a wasteland behind but the winners are cool with that. As long as they have the power they don't care if the world burns.

Yeah, that's another common theme I hear, that the government "steals" money from our paychecks to pay for dead-beats, when that same money would be "better spent" by the various charities.

SAN DIEGO TEA PARTY LEADER ARRESTED FOR KIDNAPPING, RAPE

March 17, 2012 (Lemon Grove)—Lemon Grove resident Michael John Kobulnicky, 50, a leader in the San Diego Tea Party and former regional director of the Southern California Conservative Party, is under arrest for allegedly kidnapping and raping a local woman on Fiesta Island.

“He dragged her out of the car and sexually assaulted her pretty brutally,” San Diego Police Lt. Andra Brown told ECM news partner 10 News in late February, shortly after the February 25 assault occurred.

On his website, [Link: www.michaelkobulnickyusa.com,...] Kobulnicky lists his leadership roles as “currently the co-organizer and public relations representative for the San Diego Tea Party.”

...

According to his website, Kobulnicky supports Christian values, is a father of five sons, and is co-founder and president of the National Council of Americans, Inc, a nonprofit that helps youths.

Would you believe that when I helped launch Pajamas Media, one of the goals was to create a site that would transcend left-right politics, promote environmentalism and science, and allow free discussion of ideas without ideological blinders?

I would say Charles you accomplished that goal...you just did by way of what LGF would eventually become. I would say since your split from the Right this site has become one of the best spots for political discussion on the web. Period.

What I love about LGF is that we don't shoot right wing ideas out of the box without due diligence here, we simply acts for facts and sources to back up whatever might be said.

If a right wing site posted a video of Obama saying he isn't really that fond of white people AND the video was unedited/uncut AND they had multiple, factual, verifiable sources, it would no doubt be a huge news story here.

The thing is most right wing "outrages" have no or little basis in fact, hence why those who show up here parroting them get sent packing quickly after us Lizards ask for decent sources and none are forthcoming.

History has shown us that when we empower ourselves to stand up together, we become an even more blessed and prosperous nation.

Bullshit, KT...it's been pretty damn transparent to most everyone here that the ONLY reason that you brought up ANY reports of criminal activity at Occupy events (or that were done by anyone even remotely associated with Occupy) was to beat people over the head with it.

Whenever someone points out that shit happens in large groups or organizations, no matter the political affiliations involved, you made it clear that this was apparently an affliction that only affects "left-wing" Occupy and no one else. Yes, because it's obvious selective outrage. I kept on the OWS thing because security issues and violence in the camps was a serious and endemic problem and a sign that it was an unhealthy and careless political movement. Just like I pounded the Tea Party for violent rhetoric and radicalism.
What became glaringly obvious was that people only cared about the nasty elements of the other movement. When their side had problems they needed to be defended no matter how reprehensible.

Yet I seem to be the only one with the ability to condemn something as universally reprehensible as rape regardless of the political affiliation of the rapist.

For you mere physical proximity to a protest (as long as it's a liberal protest) is all you need to determine someone's political affiliation. Your methodology is incredibly lazy, inherently dishonest, and utterly lacking in integrity. That's the reason people are laughing at you.

The only free speech that seems to matter to you is that of established media pundits. You laughed when unarmed, unthreatening women on the sidewalk were pepper sprayed for no reason and condemn the average person who dares to inform advertisers how their sponsorships will impact his or her buying habits.

It's the "you're either with us or against us" syndrome. Most of us didn't completely disavow Occupy and every argument they were trying to make, so that meant we assented to every thing that went wrong with the different Occupys, even criminal activity.

Fuck that.

Apple’s New iPad Already Jailbroken

Just hours after the new Apple iPad (I’ll be referring to it as “the new iPad” throughout this article, not iPad 3) was released, it was jailbroken in three (how appropriate!) separate ways. This means that hackers have already found and exploited security holes to run custom code on the new iPad running iOS 5.1.

Dev-Team’s iPhone hacker MuscleNerd posted a few pictures on Twitter showing the new iPad running the Cydia Store for jailbroken devices and a terminal app, both of which cannot run on an iOS device unless it’s been jailbroken.

Lemon Grove resident Michael John Kobulnicky, 50, a leader in the San Diego Tea Party and former regional director of the Southern California Conservative Party, is under arrest for allegedly kidnapping and raping a local woman on Fiesta Island.

To my recollection you never once linked to a story purporting to show a rape by any of the OWS organizers or officers. The few instances were perpetrated by hangers on or street people who were camping in mere proximity to the protests. Mere physical proximity doesn't describe someone's political affiliation, no matter how much you want it to. On the other hand the double crime of kidnapping and rape by a Tea Party leader and former regional director is notable precisely because we can determine the man's political affiliation with a high degree of certainty.

I invoke the magical imbalance fairy, because there really is no equality.

I'm with Buster Kilrain, in "Killer Angels;" "I'll be treated as I deserve."

I.e. no better and no worse.

"Kilrain rubbed his nose, brooding. Then he said, “The truth is, Colonel, that there’s no divine spark, bless you. There’s many a man alive no more value than a dead dog. Believe me, when you’ve seen them hang each other. Equality? Christ in Heaven. What I’m fighting for is the right to prove I’m a better man than many. Where have you seen this divine spark in operation, Colonel? Where have you noted this magnificent equality? The Great White Joker in the Sky dooms us all to stupidity or poverty from birth. No two things on earth are equal or have an equal chance, not a leaf nor a tree. There’s many a man worse than me, and some better, but I don’t think race or country matters a damn. What matters is justice. ‘Tis why I’m here. I’ll be treated as I deserve, not as my father deserved. I’m Kilrain, and I God-damn all gentlemen. I don’t know who me father was and I don’t give a damn. There’s only one aristocracy, and that’s right here–” he tapped his white skull with a thick finger–”and you Colonel laddie, are a member of it and don’t even know it. You are damned good at everything I’ve seen you do, a lovely soldier, an honest man, and you got a good heart on you too, which is rare in clever men. Strange thing, I’m not a clever man meself, but I know it when I run across it. The strange and marvelous thing about you, Colonel darlin’, is that you believe in mankind, even preachers, whereas when you’ve got my great experience of the world you will have learned that good men are rare, much rarer than you think. Ah,” he raised his hands, smiling, “don’t you worry about ministers. The more you kill, the more you do the world a service.”

Yes, also another one of the first Occupy rapes was an underaged girl in DC. Judging from the interview I think she was also mentally handicapped. Another case in Connecticut ( I think) where and underaged girl was taken from the camp and found being prostituted in a whore house nearby. It was part of the unsupervised free for all atmosphere of the camps that made them a dangerous place, especially for children.

Gay couple interrupts Rick Santorum's speech in Arlington Heights, IL

Rick Santorum supporters were enraged as two male hecklers interrupted the Republican hopeful’s rally at Christian Liberty Academy in Arlington Heights, Illinois by kissing each other. The incensed crowd erupted in boos, as security guards quickly surrounded the instigators and ushered them out of the assembly before it got ugly. The aggravated attendees were thrown into a frenzy and began screaming “U-S-A! U-S-A!” in the protesters’ faces.

Limbaugh said [I gotta try again to unsubscribe from his emails] that the Catholic Church turned Lefty because they mistook government spending for charity, when actually it's theft. He didn't use the word 'theft', I think he said 'appropriating' or something.

Yes, clearly the Catholic Church didn't get the nuances of policy and theology, areas they have very little understanding of. It took Limbaugh to clarify things for them.

Seriously, I will acknowledge that the Church has done dumbshit kneejerk stuff, but in this case, their stance is a well-thought-out, entirely theologically consistent approach. Just because it happens to be something Limbaugh is against doesn't mean that they 'mistook' anything.

If what KT said to C_L was in the context of a lighter conversation, I'd scratch my head about it, but I wouldn't think that he was trying to hurt her or piss her off, because it might be some sort of in-joke between them or something.

Given that he said recently that he has not changed his views in the time he has been here, we can assume that he still feels that modern American men are 'disgustingly emasculated' as per a comment of his from a while back. Also various (jaw droppingly) odd comments about women, particlularly in movies etc ("Busty McBigTits"?). Personally I think this might have a lot to do with his reluctance to criticise Limbaugh for his recent behaviour.

re: #57 Targetpractice

It actually would have surprised me if they'd pointed out that Obama cannot legally order the SuperPAC to give back the money or have any control over what it does, ...

The other thing is if the media gets away from the false equivalence to Limbaugh, and is really going to apply a new rule to both sides by policing SuperPAC donors for having said or done objectionable things, it's going to effect the Right far more than the Left. Their SuperPACs are far larger & much better financed by a small number of donors & a number of those donors have said & done some pretty outrageous things.

My selective outrage hypothesis can stand up to the scientific method and predict future results. The next outrage that sweeps the political landscape (be it a rape or someone is called a ****) I can tell who is going to be outraged and who is going to make excuses simply by looking at the political affiliation of of the perpetrator. It's the only piece of information needed.

Well, just don't pretend that you're a neutral observer. You're making assumptions about the equivalence of the liberal left and the conservative right ideological complexes. As in: they're both basically benign, and when there is extremism on both sides, it's equal and deserves equal focus.

However, that's begging the question. It can be argued, for example, that a social conservative agenda presents far more danger to a nation thus meriting more attention to its extremist variations. You may disagree with this, but let's not pretend that the full equivalence position is the default and unbiased one.
