Right Wing Journalism Fail: Breitbart.com Interviews ‘Bono’

Oops
Wingnuts • Views: 33,759

This is just classic. Last night, the geniuses at breitbart.com were trumpeting a HUGE EXCLUSIVE STORY, in which their ambush specialist Jason Mattera scored an EXCLUSIVE interview with U2 singer Bono.

Only problem with this BOMBSHELL: it wasn’t Bono. Apparently, Mattera encountered a guy with an Irish accent wearing sunglasses who looked sort of like Bono, and conducted an EXCLUSIVE BOMBSHELL INTERVIEW that blew up in his face: ‘DC’s Bad Boy Reporter’ Ambushes Bono Impersonator by Accident.

(Update: actually, this Bono impersonator doesn’t even have an Irish accent.)

When the mini-Breits realized that they had been bamboozled, they just 404ed the page, with no retraction or statement of any kind, and marked the video “private” at YouTube to hide the evidence of their hilarious screw-up.

But of course, the Internet never forgets, and now the heirs of Andrew are stuck in a moment they can’t get out of. Here’s a transcript of this BOMBSHELL EXCLUSIVE:

Mattera: By dodging taxes on royalties are you raiding the poverty programs you purport to champion?

Bono: No.

Mattera: No? Don’t you want governments to be generous with other people’s money and not yours?

Bono: I don’t have control over that…

Mattera: How do you not have control over that? It’s your company. Are you not in charge of your own company?

Bono: It’s not my company.

Mattera: You have no say in what U2 does?

Bono: Not particularly.

Mattera: You don’t? You don’t have a say in what U2 does?

Bono: No.

Help — I’ve started laughing and can’t seem to stop. Looks like it’s not going to be A Beautiful Day for the Breitbrats.

What a bunch of idiots.

(And by the way, these right wing masterminds still have not fixed the millions of broken links at their sites.)

(h/t: Silvio.)

UPDATE at 3/21/12 9:48:56 am

And now, the video they tried to hide:

(h/t: Gus.)

UPDATE at 3/21/12 10:27:49 am

Correction: buried at breitbart.com, we find an Editors’ Note by Joel Pollak that admits no mistake:

Last night, we removed an article about Bono at the request of the videographer who had provided the links to the videos upon which the article had been based.

These people are pathologically unable to admit any errors, even one as ridiculous as this.

This is what AB's brand of "modern investigative journalism" has brought us to: no professional standards, no journalistic standards, no ethical standards, no f*cking clue.

This is pretty funny!

He could have tried spin it by saying "Bono is so one-dimensional few can tell a fake one from a real one." That would be better than the 404. People would wonder if he was in in the joke.

I do a lot of work for Hollywood companies, and am in and around LA a lot (In fact, I'm at the airport right now waiting for the next flight to Burbank airport.)

I'm lousy at recognizing people, but some of my colleagues are good at it. It would be odd to see Bono just walking around in public without a staff. Most likely he gets in a car, with a driver waiting, and gets whisked from point to point. I'd really doubt that he'd just start talking to someone who shoved a camera in his face.

But you'll see all the B-List, C-List, and D-Listers all over the place (like I saw Guy Fieri chugging away recently on an elliptical in a hotel gym).

Suspect arrested in Firebombing of senators office

Man accused of setting fire at Sen. Wendy Davis' office had visited twice in past week

A man living in an abandoned building, who had twice visited Sen. Wendy Davis' office in the past week, has been arrested in the firebombing of her Fort Worth office on Tuesday.

About 4 p.m., two staff workers noticed smoke and when they opened the door in the third-floor office, discovered waist-high flames. They managed to reach a fire extinguisher and put out the flames.

A man identified as Sedrick Steele was arrested around 11 p.m. and charged with arson. Police said they discovered empty bottles, wicks and an empty lighter fluid can in an abandoned building where he was living.

Steele had visited the office and asked to speak to Davis earlier, and was described by the staff as erratic. When he was informed she was unavailable in both visits, he told the staff that, "They would soon be reading about him in the news."

re: #66 Lidane

Because a kid walking home from the store with candy and a drink is totally to blame for the fact that a racist, gun-wielding maniac followed him in a car then chased him on foot and attacked and killed him.

What the fuck.

Why was he wearing a hoodie? Why was he walking at night? Why did he run? Why did he get suspended from school? Why did he cut math class twice? Why was his skirt so short? (No, wait, that's from the other list.)

Can we just pretend that Al Sharpton's not there, which God knows, I wish he wasn't, and focus on the actual case?

No. The point is to keep throwing out the red herrings to distract from the case, hence the ongoing discussion of whether "Hispanic" is a race or an ethnicity, etc...

Hmmm, looking like it might just be a mentally ill homeless guy and not a wingnut.

Aliens. Jesus Christ. Aliens.

Where does a homeless guy get the materials for a firebombing, BTW?

I would think so. Hell, OJ got slapped with a wrongful death suit even though he was acquitted on murder charges.

I've read on older threads that no, you can't, if justifiable shooting is not refuted. OJ was in another state.

Well, there goes my NFL season next year.

Commissioner Goddell lowered the hammer on New Orleans for the "bounty" scandal. Head coach Sean Payton gets a one year suspension, without pay, GM Mickey Loomis gets a half-year suspension, the team loses a first and second round draft pick this year and a second-rounder next, and fined $500,000.

re: #81 Kragar

Martin could probably also have argued self defense, except for the fact that he's dead.

Why do I have a feeling that if the kid had turned and gunned down the man following him, they would have arrested him, law or no law? I have this feeling.

re: #87 Alaska Martyrs' Brigades

Oh, sure, they would have to prove b.t.r.d. that he acted not out of self-defense. To which I say: time to gather evidence, indict him and actually start proving this in the courtroom, and let the process go as it might.

Unfortunately, the controversy over Florida's "stand your ground" law is that it doesn't require someone to prove they acted in self-defense, only to argue it.

I know this and nothing I've said contradicts it. It also means the burden of proof is on the prosecutors. Which is what I wrote.

re: #83 Kragar

Wouldn't that allow a civil case for wrongful death to still be prosecuted?

If it's no longer a justified shoot it becomes vastly easier to pursue it. Juries are still generally not sympathetic but in this case that's less likey. Zimmerman might well settle quickly just to avoid what a jury would do.

(Actually, using lighter fluid is pretty low-rent, material of opportunity.)

I know now that Breitbart.com is staffed by rejects from SarahPalin.com. Seriously. It's the only explanation for so much fail.
But it's funnier than hell!
