TN Bill Mandates Publication of Names of Abortion Doctors and Patients

The Republican Party’s total war on women’s rights
Wingnuts • Views: 39,674

The GOP’s war on women’s rights now has another weapon in its arsenal; in Tennessee, Republicans are pushing a new bill that would mandate publication of abortion data, including the names of both doctors and patients.

Sheer insanity.

Doctors who perform abortions in Tennessee could see their names listed online, and women who undergo the procedures could be unintentionally identified under a bill pending in the state legislature.

State lawmakers are debating a measure that would require the Department of Health to publish more details about abortions, bringing Tennessee into a roiling, state-by-state battle over how to regulate abortion procedures.

Supporters say the bill, scheduled to come up Wednesday in a state House committee, only requires state health officials to post information online that they already collect. But critics say the measure is intended to intimidate women and doctors involved in abortions, even in emergency situations.

“I think publicizing this information will do nothing but cause serious consequences,” said state Rep. Gary Odom, D-Nashville. “This is dangerous. This is a dangerous piece of legislation.”

UPDATE at 3/22/12 5:27:29 pm

Today, the Republican sponsor of the bill withdrew the publication mandate, after a huge outcry against it: TN Abortion Bill Sponsor Withdraws ID Provisions.

And with massive irony, he’s now whining that he received threats of violence — exactly what his bill was intended to provoke against abortion providers.

A controversial proposal to post details about each abortion performed in Tennessee on a state website has been withdrawn, with its chief sponsor accusing opponents of spreading lies about it and inciting threats of violence against him.

Rep. Matthew Hill, R-Jonesborough, told members of the Legislative Health and Human Service Committee on Wednesday the threats came after news of his proposal went viral this week — including being debated on MSNBC and dissected by national bloggers who suggested it would endanger women and their doctors. He said false reports about his bill also spread after the attention.

Hill said he was withdrawing the controversial provisions to be able to focus on passing other parts of the bill. What remains of the Life Defense Act of 2012, or HB3808, would require all doctors who perform abortions to obtain admitting privileges at area hospitals.

Hill said opponents’ “categorization of me as a terrorist, murderer or more has been used by their leftist friends to engender hatred and incite the threat of violence against me.” He wouldn’t discuss specific threats but said most were from out of state, and he referred them to authorities.

That does raise an interesting legal question as to whether the state government could be held criminally liable if one of the patients listed ends up dead.

Beyond that, what the fuck? Patients don't have the right to keep their medical records confidential anymore?

It's no one else's business what doctors I go to or what procedures I get done, no matter what it is. If my own family can't know about my medical records without my consent, what the hell gives these assholes the right to publicize anyone else's medical records?

Amazon is selling a nine-hour selection of Bach MP3 downloads for 99 cents. I think the deal goes away in a day or so. The collection is anchored by the B Minor Mass and the Brandenburgs. (The mass is broken into 28 files, but not stupidly.) It took about 15 minutes to download it, but you can use their Cloud feature. I had to fire up a Windows machine to catch it--the downloader didn't like my Linux.

CDC: Only half of first marriages last 20 years

Among women there was just a 52 percent chance that a first marriage would survive for 20 years, according to the report from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics. Men appeared to be slightly more successful, with a 56 percent chance of a first marriage surviving for two decades.

The older marriage age doesn’t mean that people aren’t getting into relationships – they’re just choosing to live together instead. “There’s been a real rise in the prevalence of cohabitation,” said the report’s lead author, Casey E. Copen, a demographer with the National Survey of Family Growth at the National Center for Health Statistics.

The percentage of women living with a partner (as opposed to marrying him) has nearly quadrupled from 3 percent in 1982 to 11 percent in the newest survey. The earlier surveys included data only from women so the researchers couldn’t look at whether there had been a change in the rate at which men were choosing to live together rather than to marry.

Not quite on topic, but certainly qualifies for WTF?

Human fetuses found in luggage at Miami airport

Authorities say customs agents at Miami International Airport found two human fetuses in luggage coming from Cuba.

A Miami-Dade police spokesman said Thursday that the fetuses were found Jan. 30 in the luggage of two Cuban-American women returning from Havana.

Police say customs agents spotted one fetus when they X-rayed a clay jar and found the second when they opened the jar. One was male and one was female.

A medical examiner determined both fetuses were about 20 weeks and both had been still born. No foul play was suspected.

Some older Republicans desperately crying out for help:

A Republican litmus test harms our party

By William Brock, Jack Danforth, Trent Lott and Don Nickles

[After trying to blame Senate Democrats for the lack of legislation...]

The question this election year is whether Republicans can build a coalition of voters large enough to win the support of our nation, gain a majority in the Senate, end the hyper-partisan gridlock so exemplified by the abusive actions of the Democratic Senate majority, and restore this land’s traditional spirit and optimism.

As the campaign season began, prospects looked promising. A dismal economy and the president’s low approval ratings suggested a clear opportunity. Moreover, Democratic Party policies of more spending, higher taxes, endlessly multiplying intrusive regulations, and picking winners and losers in business were opposed by Republicans across the board and served as ready-made rallying points on which to campaign. Our party held the high ground. We could fight the battle on principles central in the minds of every Republican.

Perhaps the optimism rose too quickly, for false divisions, based more on labels than facts, began to be raised. “Moderate” became an epithet to be hurled at opponents said to be something less than true Republicans. The acronym RINO (Republican in Name Only) was used to vilify men and women who had devoted much of their lives to serving in office or supporting our party’s candidates. One need go no further than to note that primary challenges were mounted against two of our most distinguished and dedicated Senate icons, Orrin Hatch and Richard Lugar, with claims that even these solid conservatives were not pure enough.

In our day, it was common for conservative Republicans to campaign for moderate colleagues, and vice versa. The goal was control of the Senate, not absolute ideological conformity, because the ultimate purpose was to keep Congress true to America’s core values — and that result required a majority.

Many of these more recent assaults constitute an attempt at a political purge, an effort to remove from the party all but the “doctrinally pure,” however critics define purity. Such efforts would deny all that our party is. We do not have the right to determine who can “be” a Republican on the basis of some litmus test, ever.

Republicans have learned from 150 years of practical experience in elective politics that inclusion, not exclusion, is the winning formula. Since the party’s inception, its principles and unifying philosophy have spanned the concerns and principles held by much of the American electorate. We have no need to qualify the word “Republican”; we simply have to live up to it.

The problem for this quartet is that they can't have their cake and eat it too. In other words, they want to play word games and blame games, then all of a sudden protest when the same thing is turned on them by their fellow "Republicans", who just happen to be either more theocratic or anti-democratic than they are.

I like the inspiringly devilish joi de vivre of Mahler's first.

[Embedded content]

I'm not generally inclined towards Mahler - or the Romantic period more generally - but it's interesting to find the origination of that tune, and maybe I should open my mind more. I have, in the past, found that my musical prejudices can be broken down through more listening; Kenny G notwithstanding.

Yes. That's the activist "pro-life" position in a nutshell.

As soon as a woman gets pregnant or even opens her legs and has sex, all of her rights cease to exist.

106 Obdicut  Thu, Mar 22, 2012 5:30:46pm

re: #104 Talking Point Detective

I like Mahler better than most of the Romantics because he's so damn wicked and that undercuts all the hyperbole. The way that the funeral march breaks up into jaunty, almost jazzy movement is really funny to me.

To paraphrase Charlie Pierce, no one is in control of the GOP's ship right now because a bunch of folks from steerage took over in 2010 and threw the wheel overboard.

The Republican party used their Southern Strategy for 40 years, playing on fear, ignorance, religious bigotry, and racial/class resentment. They made a lot of promises over that time, and never had any intention of fulfilling them. It was all just to win elections. Now they've got people in power who are determined to make good on what the GOP has been saying all these decades and it's biting the party leadership in the ass.

Richard Hanna, GOP Congressman, Tells Women To Give Their Money To Democrats

As the only Republican Congressman at a rally for the Equal Rights Amendment on Thursday, Rep. Richard Hanna (R-N.Y.) gave women an unexpected piece of advice: Give your money to Democrats.

"I think these are very precarious times for women, it seems. So many of your rights are under assault," he told the crowd of mostly women. "I'll tell you this: Contribute your money to people who speak out on your behalf, because the other side -- my side -- has a lot of it. And you need to send your own message. You need to remind people that you vote, you matter, and that they can't succeed without your help."

I am a caretaker for two people. Whenever I want to act on their behalf, HIPAA rules require that I have signed documents before I can gain access to any information about their medical history. And this is for someone who is freakin' trying to help them manage their healthcare.

There is no way - using a consistent logic, that this bill can be consistent with HIPAA rules - both in terms of the letter of the laws and in terms of the spirit of the laws.

I tend to avoid over-the-top hyperbole - but this kind of legislation cannot but remind me of scarlet letters and stake-burning.

Yeah - sometimes it's just absurd. The hoops I have to jump through sometimes fly in the face of common sense. I can't even get information such as whether they have received a form in the mail if they can't find the signed release in their files.

I understand the principle involved, and we're better off with those kinds of protections than without them - but sometimes the default of distrust is counterproductive. For example, I'm a caretaker for someone with mental illness, and instead of just talking with me to find out a reasonably balanced take on what's going on, sometimes people need to listen to a wigged out delusional explanation from the person I'm taking care of before they just give up and come back to me to hear what I have to say. I've learned not to get too pissed, but sometimes - particularly when I get that institutional condescension and rudeness - it's difficult to prevent myself from going upside people's heads.

The Fordham Institute blog entry from today:

Still dissing Darwin

Despite pressures to upgrade the teaching and learning of “STEM” subjects [...] state standards for science, although often revised, remain, on average, mediocre—undemanding, lacking crucial science content, and chockablock with pedagogical and sociological irrelevancies. That’s the conclusion of Fordham’s most recent review of state science standards to which I contributed. [...]

There are, of course, multiple reasons for the low marks. Among these, the saddest and least justifiable is what the authors call “Undermining Evolution.”

Evolution science (grown over 150 years far beyond geology and biology) is by no means the whole of natural science. [...] It is central to all life science and one of its most active fields. Yet the reviewers find that, in many states, evolution is weakly, incompletely, even erroneously presented—unlike elements of other currently active areas such as modern physics or cell biology. Evolution is singled out in high-minded calls for “critical thinking,” for “strengths and weaknesses”—as though it were less reliable, less scientific, than the others! Basics of evolutionary biology are sometimes covered while the E-word itself, evolution, is avoided, or mentioned reluctantly in connection with high school (but not elementary or middle school) work.

Particularly dismaying is how rarely state standards indicate that evolution has anything to do with us, Homo sapiens. Even states with thorough coverage of evolution, like Massachusetts, avoid linking that controversial term with ourselves. Only four states—Florida, New Hampshire, Iowa, and Rhode Island—discuss human evolution in their current standards. This isn’t just a Bible Belt issue. Even the bluest of blue states don’t expect their students to know that humans and apes share ancestry.

Why? The answer is not the first one that springs to mind: religion. To be sure, religion—biblical literalism—is one part of the thrust to undermine standards for evolution. But politics is the other, probably more important element. A focused combination of politics with religion, in pursuit of (or opposed to) governmental action, is vastly more effective than either one alone.

Those eager to deny evolution for religious reasons are not just Christians who steer by every word of scripture. They include some (not all) fundamentalists of all three Abrahamic faiths, plus a very few anti-science academics. Understandably, the literalists don’t want children taught in school what must be falsehoods from their perspective. By themselves, however, religious anti-evolutionists would wield scant power over state decisions. Real power comes by politicizing the arguments and switching them from scripture to more stylish notions: “scientific alternatives,” “critical thinking,” or—most commonly—“strengths and weaknesses of [Darwin’s] theory.” When these are pressed by politicians dissing “Darwinism,” a downgrading of science is underway.

[...]

Central to every effort to squeeze some variant of creationism into public education is the idea of grouping people, identifying the "other", and basing elections on this dichotomy.

It's a false dichotomy in many ways when it comes to evolution, because the truth is that so many people who get involved in political brouhahas over "evolution" really understand the concept.

For the hyper-religious the battle is important because the "others" are infidels. Then, craft politicians figure they can add that hyper-religious demographic to the combined constituency and get elected/re-elected.

Science is the sacrificial lamb for such politics.

Now that The Walking Dead is done until the fall, I don't have much of anything to watch anymore. Psych is winding down, and both Burn Notice and Leverage are done until whenever, so my TV watching is limited at best.

It's just as well. I just started my final project for grad school so that's going to take my attention until May. Maybe by then that Netflix series that Eli Roth is working on will be out. That might be interesting.

Former James O’Keefe ‘Accomplice’ Reveals ‘Barn Incident’ And Harassment Complaint

Last week, we reported that Nadia Naffe, self-described “accomplice” to conservative activist James O’Keefe , had begun publishing a multi-part tell-all series of posts to her blog. Thursday morning, Naffe published the second part, which details her version of the events that led her to file a criminal harassment complaint against O’Keefe in November, and which includes documents related to a sexual harassment settlement between O’Keefe and “CNN Sex Boat Caper” whistleblower Izzy Santa. O’Keefe filed suit against Naffe on Wednesday to obtain an injunction against publication of those documents, and of emails that O’Keefe claims she stole from his computer.

Since publishing the first part of her tell-all, Nadia Naffe has been the subject of relentless attacks on Twitter, and has responded defiantly, promising to publish 7 years worth of O’Keefe’s emails and documents (which she says she obtained when the conservative provocateur borrowed her Android phone and linked his Gmail account with hers), and to give a full accounting of the events that led her to file a criminal harassment complaint against him in November. Ms. Naffe’s complaint alleged that O’Keefe invited her to his New Jersey home to work on a project, where she was to stay in a finished barn to save money on hotels. They got into an argument, according to Naffe, and O’Keefe abandoned her in the barn, refusing to take her to a train station so she could go home.

Naffe also alleged that she began to feel physical disorientation, and was eventually unable to move under her own control, after sharing beer with O’Keefe. She said O’Keefe and a friend eventually drove her to Penn Station in New York and that O’Keefe and his friend had to help her into the car, and that she passed out during the ride. She says she woke up at the train station, and later noticed items, including panties, missing from her luggage.

Florida governor appoints new prosecutor in Trayvon Martin case

Florida Gov. Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi said Thursday that they had appointed a new prosecutor to investigate the shooting death of Trayvon Martin and would appoint a committee on citizen safety that would examine the state's "Stand Your Ground" law. Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old, was killed by a self-described neighborhood watch guard in February.

Desmond Doss

Desmond Thomas Doss (February 7, 1919 – March 23, 2006) was the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor and one of only three so honored (the others are Thomas W. Bennett and Joseph G. LaPointe, Jr.). He was a Corporal (Private First Class at the time of his Medal of Honor heroics) in the U.S. Army assigned to the Medical Detachment, 307th Infantry, 77th Infantry Division. He died the same day as another Medal of Honor recipient, David Bleak.

Drafted in April 1942,[1] Desmond Doss refused to kill, or carry a weapon into combat, because of his personal beliefs as a Seventh-day Adventist. He thus became a medic, and by serving in the Pacific theatre of World War II helped his country by saving the lives of his comrades, while also adhering to his religious convictions. Shortly before leaving the Army, Desmond was diagnosed with tuberculosis.[2]

His Medal of Honor was earned by the risks he took to save the lives of so many comrades.

The pre-redesign site never linked to LGF so I can't check that. But if their traffic is "terrific" as O'Connor claimed, there really should be a lot more visits than this, even allowing for the wingnut echo chamber effect.

I almost wrote a post today about the comments for that ridiculous article, because almost all of the Breitbart.com audience hates the redesign. Many of them are complaining that there are a lot fewer commenters, too.

I wonder how long it will take the not-so-Breitbarts to totally run the site into the ground.

Also... I realized another huge reason why their traffic has plunged so dramatically. Breitbart did a smart thing by having news feeds from wire services at Breitbart.com, because Drudge Report constantly linked to their articles. That had to be good for millions of hits every month, literally -- Drudge generates an enormous amount of traffic.

The brats threw it all away when they got rid of the news feeds.

Yes, I was also thinking the contest should be somehow based on Pages, though I'm not sure what metric to use ("Most Viewed" isn't necessarily the best, since it can depend on factors having nothing to do with a Page's quality)

Fox News chairman and CEO Roger Ailes is full of surprises these days. The latest: he’s encouraging people to read the new book by one of his ideological opposites: MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow.

Politico’s Dylan Byers reports Ailes has written a book blurb supporting “Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power,” which comes out later this month.

People who like Rachel will love the book. People who don’t will get angry, but aggressive debate is good for America. Drift is a book worth reading.

a friend of mine paints in acrylics using Uv paint, cuts it with normal paint so the Uv glow intensity can be controlled for purposes of defining value

so you turn on the black light and it's an acrylic painting that glows as if it's a TV screen

I knew a guy who painted the walls of his room a deep red, the ceiling a rich desert tan, and did the trim in gold. Sounds weird, but it gave the room sort of a far east, royal look. It was bad ass.

I put aluminum foil up to mimic mirrors which I couldn't afford.

THAT SOUNDS AWESOME

The only bad part was it was so disorienting that when I woke up in the morning I had no idea which way the door was and had to feel around for it, but it was kind of like rebirth.

Unfortunately, it was normally rebirth into my douchey hippie flatmates having a passive-aggressive snipe-fest at each other about which of them upheld the principles of nonconfrontation best.

I did bust out my lute after our earlier discussion. Still in fine shape and almost partially in tune after a couple years in the case. It's an 8 course renaissance lute, not one of those 12 course baroque monsters. I can still fumble through French tablature with passable derpiness. Like riding a bike. The greenhouse with glass walls and brick floor has nice acoustics, the cats are unimpressed.

I was a teen during the Satanic Panic of the 80's, and my mom didn't want me listening to any metal. Now Aerosmith is her favorite band. I even took her to the KISS/Aerosmith concert a handful of years ago.

My mom, god bless her, took me to my first concert at the age of 15. Zappa somewhere in DC. Lots of pot smoke, sex dolls being bounced around. Not really her scene but she put up with it.

A short guide for determining if you are in the middle of nowhere:

Does the road have more than two lanes? If yes then you are somewhere. Keep driving.

If no, then you may be nowhere. Start waving or nodding at people. If more than 50% return your wave/nod then you are really in the middle of nowhere.

If you wave or nod and at least 50% of the people pull a gun or knife then you are in a libertarian middle of nowhere, AKA aluminum mesa.

If you wave or nod and at least 50% of the people flip you off, welcome back to civilization.

Sigh. I'm definitely back in civilization.

In college, I painted my room black and then slept in the walk-in closet because an all-black room is really depressing.

Later, I got a room that was in the center of a building, and had no windows, and when the door was shut, was perfectly black and filled with white noise. I put my bed in the exact middle of the room. It was awesome in a very weird sensory-dep kind of way.
