Geraldo Rivera on the Dangers of Clothing

“The hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman was”
Wingnuts • Views: 32,971

Fox News genius Geraldo Rivera appeared on Fox & Friends this morning and weighed in on the Trayvon Martin case, helpfully suggesting that Trayvon was killed by his hoodie.

BRIAN KILMEADE (co-host): Let’s talk about the Trayvon Martin case and what’s going on in Florida right now.

GERALDO RIVERA: Well, I have a different take, Brian, on that. I believe that George Zimmerman, the overzealous neighborhood watch captain should be investigated to the fullest extent of the law and if he is criminally liable, he should be prosecuted. But I am urging the parents of black and Latino youngsters particularly to not let their children go out wearing hoodies. I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman was.

I wear a hoodie almost every day from about November to April, but as a small white woman with a lot of gray hair, I fail to scare anyone.

To their credit, there is a generation of kids growing up in public high schools (at least in the northeastern US) who seem to be truly race-blind. I see it with my kids and their friends. They have a really tough time categorizing their peers by skin colour. Sure there are other categories - skaters, jocks, stoners, etc. But race seems to be dropping off the social radar.

Agreed - that is why I added the parenthetical qualifier.

I very rarely hear my kids' or their peers use skin colour/race in a descriptive fashion. Anecdote: I once asked my daughter to tell me which girl in a group was so and so, whom she had asked to hang out with. She tried describing her by clothing, height, location relative to other girls in the group. I finally I figured out who it was - the only black girl in the group. When I asked why she didn't just say that it was the black girl, my daughter just looked at me and said it never occurred to her to use race in a descriptive way. That's not just upbringing, it is a social shift.

Geraldo doubles down after his son piles on:

Geraldo: My Own Son Is 'Ashamed' Of My Hoodie Quote

How bad is the backlash against Geraldo Rivera for blaming Trayvon Martin's shooting death on his choice of clothing? His own son is piling on.

"My own son just wrote to say he's ashamed of my position re hoodies [sic]," Rivera tweeted on Friday. "Still I feel parents must do whatever they can to keep their kids safe."

Still, even some tough love from his family wouldn't deter him from his mission to convince black and latino youth to stay away from sweatshirts.

"It's not blaming the victim Its common sense-look like a gangsta&some armed schmuck will take you at your word," he added.

On FOX News the same morning, Rivera said: “I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman was.”

Woman shouts "pretend it's Obama" during Santorum target practice

A woman shouted "pretend it's Obama" during target practice by Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum at a shooting range here. The Secret Service said it would look into whether the incident posed a legitimate threat.

Santorum was about 75 meters away, wearing soundproof earmuffs, and said he didn't hear the shout. "It's absurd," he told reporters afterward. "No, we're not pretending it's anybody, but shooting pistols. It's a very terrible and horrible remark and I'm glad I didn't hear it."

Speaking on the phone from Louisiana today, Gingrich was asked about the Washington Post's two-page spread on Santorum's connection to Opus Dei. He fired back:

"Look, you have to understand that the elite media is in the tank for Obama ... It is just astonishing to me how pro-Obama they are. Do you think you are going to see two pages on Obama's Muslim friends? Or two pages on the degree to which Obama is consistently apologizing to Islam while attacking the Catholic church? Sam Clam and Bertha Clam are very in love. They have been married for 50 years, and Sam Clam gets very ill and is close to death. Bertha promises to seek him out in the afterlife. Sam passes.

When it is Bertha's time to shuffle off this mortal coil, she asks St. Peter where Sam Clam is. He looks it up, and says that Sam Clam has chosen to open a discotheque in the swinging part of Heaven. She takes her newly issued harp and angel's wings, and goes off to see Sam Clam. They have a moving reunion, and then Bertha has to go back for angel orientation. In front of St. Pete, she is asked where her new harp is. She thinks carefully, and exclaims:

Nothing that any teenage boy was likely to have in his closet, no. I can play with ideas that an umbrella might have made him look both older and more innocuous or something, but it's pointless. I have hoodies. 've worn them since I was a little girl, for at least thirty years now. My husband has a Raider Nation hoodie. If he were a young black man, this would be prima facie evidence to these people that he is dangerous, but since he's a white man in his mid thirties, living near Oakland, no one notices. My father has hoodies. I see old Chinese ladies on the street wearing hoodies, under quilted jackets. The Catholic high school I used to teach at sold school hoodies with our coat of arms and school name on them. They even sell expensive, high-fashion cashmere-blend hoodies now. It's like blue jeans. This is the standard casual-dress costume of the average American.
