Unbelievable: Newt Gingrich Calls Obama’s Comments on Trayvon Martin ‘Disgraceful’

Speaking today on the Sean Hannity radio show, Newt Gingrich found a way to picture President Obama’s remarks on Trayvon Martin as “disgraceful.”

What’s disgraceful is Gingrich’s bizarre criticism; believe it or not, he’s saying that Obama would have been just fine “if it had been a white who had been shot.” What the hell is wrong with Newt Gingrich?

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich harshly criticized President Obama for commenting on Trayvon Martin’s race as he extended condolences to the 17-year-old shooting victim’s parents on Friday. Obama said, “If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon,” a remark that Gingrich said he found “disgraceful” and “appalling.”

 “What the president said, in a sense, is disgraceful,” Gingrich said on the Hannity Radio show. “It’s not a question of who that young man looked like. Any young American of any ethnic background should be safe, period. We should all be horrified no matter what the ethnic background.

“Is the president suggesting that if it had been a white who had been shot, that would be OK because it didn’t look like him. That’s just nonsense dividing this country up. It is a tragedy this young man was shot. It would have been a tragedy if he had been Puerto Rican or Cuban or if he had been white or if he had been Asian American of if he’d been a Native American. At some point, we ought to talk about being Americans. When things go wrong to an American, it is sad for all Americans. Trying to turn it into a racial issue is fundamentally wrong. I really find it appalling.”

Indeed, but how much of the cover-up that began the moment the cops arrived was due to a police department with a documented history of issues where race is concerned and how much is as a result of this law? There's been cases in other counties similar to this, of altercations resulting in the shooter walking free because he cried "self-defense!"

I agree, but that says more about the Sanford Pd than anything else. If they'd wanted to actually work the case, they had the tools to figure out what really happened, but they punted instead.

P.S: "Punted" is a charitable interpretation of their actions. I'm inclined to think worse of them than that, but I'm going to wait before applying that conclusion.

Apparently. In my experience it's usually the same call center and the same operators. The non-emergency number is just a way of prioritizing during heavy volume.

The hoodie is really a very practical garment. For all the mothers who tell their kids to put something on their head when they go outside in the cold, why would you be afraid of a kid in a hoodie? It's shirt, jacket, scarf and hat all in one.

Now, I can understand hoodies being worn inside. Kids need to be taught to take off the hood in a store or whatever just like we used to teach them to take off their hats indoors --basic etiquette and makes you look much less suspicious on security cameras.

Now, I can understand hoodies being worn inside. Kids need to be taught to take off the hood in a store or whatever just like we used to teach them to take off their hats indoors --basic etiquette and makes you look much less suspicious on security cameras.

It would be unheard of, and despite all of the other incompetence, arguable malicious police misconduct in the case I find this bit almost impossible to believe. I'm guessing job applicants were either required to provide links to their account on a written application beforehand, or employers verified the existence of their account before the interview (if, like the a typical facebook user, it showed your real name and photo).

But then you have to wonder what would happen if spoof/impersonation accounts were set up - you could always make one as a decoy, I suppose...

I can see the social scientists using basic stats from fb to determine if you would fit well into a corporation. How many friends you have, are you going to play high-school mind games, are you a loner, do you play well with others --etc.

But I also think there are some pretty good hiring tests that can be given that determine the same thing without the liability that goes with breaking privacy laws.

I can just see the law suits. "I was fired because . . . .. I have proof because I posted it on my fb and they have my password etc . . . . "

It's not true:

There is a great deal of misinformation surrounding the Trayvon Martin shooting. Here are some of the most prominent misunderstandings:

Cops returned the gun to shooter George Zimmerman.

Untrue, according to police. Sanford Officer Tim Smith handcuffed Zimmerman, and then pulled from a holster in Zimmerman's waistband the black Kel Tec 9 mm PF9, a semiautomatic. The gun is now in the possession of authorities, officially part of the evidence in the case.

Zimmerman, though, still has a valid concealed-weapons permit.

The police simply never, ever return a gun that's just been used to kill someone, not even when that gun belongs to a cop involved in the cleanest of clean shootings. The reasons go beyond the idea of an ongoing investigation, it CYA. If the same weapon gets released and immediately ends up involved in another shooting/homicide the legal liability could end up bankrupting the community. People have to petition to get their guns back, even when they're stolen, and the process takes time by design.

Whatever, Ed...if you want to believe that race wasn't a part of this whole affair before President Obama made a (relatively innocuous) personal remark about the poor kid, then I can't reason with you.

As far as Zimmerman's motivation to pursue and shoot Trayvon Martin dead in the street, I think those "they always get away" and "fucking coons" remarks of his on that 911 tape are as clear as Waterford crystal. Because of those comments, the DoJ will hopefully have his ass in the dock on federal charges, because as it stands now, the locals aren't doing jack shit.

You seem to be pretending that this society's historical valuation of blacks is immaterial, that it's somehow inappropriate to mention the elephant in the room, to acknowledge the painfully obvious thing that's on everyone's minds, whether they have the honesty to admit it or not.

Must Concur. This case purely stinks. The Sanford police didn't simply throw up their hands in resignation when Zimmerman claimed self defense, they went out of their way to protect him. There were things they could have done to determine if they could find probable cause to arrest Zimmerman, but they did none of them.

There was a post up above that linked to a strange screed listing what should be included in a 'fair and balanced' MSM articles about the Obama reign.

In the screed was a comment and a link to another article about the revised costs of Obamacare and the comparison of the 2010 and 2012 CBO estimates. The main claim was that the new 10 year estimate of 1.76 trillion is almost double the previous estimate of 940 billion, a difference of 87%. This is a humdinger of a lie.

The first misrepresentation is the change from billions to trillions.
940 billion looks a lot smaller than 1.76 trillion because of the emotional jump from billion to trillion. Change it to 1760 billion and that emotional jump isn't there.

Here's the lie.
The 2010 estimate covers the 10 years from 2010 to 2019.
The 2012 estimate covers the 11 years from 2012 to 2022.

If the comparison is ten years, the 2012 estimate = 1495 billion a difference of 59%.

However if we compare what should be compared, the years where both estimate contain values, the story is completely different.
The 2010 8 year estimate = 933 billion
The 2012 8 year estimate = 1011 billion
That is an 8% difference.

The last problem with the RWNJ analysis is they use the gross figures not the net figures.
The 2010 8 year estimate = 784 billion
The 2012 8 year estimate = 772 billion
That is an -2% difference.

You weren't talking about the killer's motivation though, you were talking about Obama's message to Martin's parents. Maybe you conflated the two because you have a lazy intellect and the obvious difference escapes you, but Obama never once mentioned Zimmerman or what drove him. Obama simply sought a way to identify with the victim's parents.

Anyway, regardless the police response itself was about race. The undeniable fact is that they simply didn't see Trayvon as a person who's death really mattered, who deserved their professional best. They didn't devalue him because he was young, or because he was wearing a hoodie, they didn't give a shit because he was black. You can deny this, ignore it or spread it on toast, I don't care. Race was already part of this. Obama didn't inject anything that wasn't already there. If you can't see that, you're either ignorant of US history or live on another planet. Saying, "My son would look like him," is a pretty tepid observation on his part, hardly anything pernicious, just a reality.

Why would you want to disregard Zimmerman's motivation? Isn't it through trying to understand tragedies like this that maybe future ones can be averted?

Where do you get this idea that a president should never comment on pending prosecutions? If he were to say, "the guy's guilty, fry him," that would be one thing. But a president has an obligation to at least address controversial topics that have the nation (and much of the world) transfixed, particularly when his DOJ is investigating. He can't just pretend like it doesn't exist. (BTW, Clinton commented on the OJ trial, the most controversial of his admin....was that wrong of him to acknowledge an issue that so deeply divided the nation?)

Comments that were not out of line, really. It's true Obama drew inferences, but they were inferences that were reasonable to draw. Nothing wrong with that at all. It's only when dishonest inferences are made that inferences become a problem. Inferences like Newt's deliberate misreading of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney's support for the basic idea of a social safety net as those men thinking it was "OK for people to be on food stamps".

EXACTLY! I look at that picture of Trayvon and think, what an adorable boy. Can you imagine what he looked like when he was 3? OMG! all my motherly instincts go on full charge.

(I seem to be doing this alot lately, as my own son is turning 18 --all the under 30's to me seem like children --I think it started when my neighbor's kid joined the Marines)

He could be my kid, my nephew, my cousin, my neighbor's kid who I got to babysit when he was little. . . .

And they don't even seem to realize that by doing so, they're shining a big bright light on THEIR OWN RACIST ASSUMPTIONS.

I'm 32 going on thirty three and white as that asparagus they grow in caves. I have no kids, but I have nieces and nephews...and making the empathetic leap of what worries and pain I've experienced--combined with an understanding of how much worse it must be for that other family.

When a teenager dies these days, I think, "by the numbers, that person could almost be my child." It's human, a cognitive easing, to empathize by imagining a comparable situation.

If is dark out I am ready to yell at them for walking around alone after dark. Even white kids are pretty much invisible with their hoodies up and could get easily hit by a car. AND you know they aren't paying attention to traffic!

I actually told a mom in the neighborhood to make sure her kids wear something that can be seen after dark. Her kids were crossing the main street and I almost didn't see them.

Scared the shit out of me.

Now he's a bloated shell of his former self, pandering to the lowest common denominator in a truly pointless campaign. He's won only two states (his home and a state next door) largely by race and religion baiting. The rest of the time he's battling Ron Paul for last place. Only an ego that matches his girth keeps him in the race. He's so desperate for relevance he pushes his comments to 11 every day now.

Not only must they suck it but their complaining just doesn't make any sense. They were already complaining about Obama's tact.

They just added another level. Gingrich already, always, thinks Obama's a disgrace. The ideal is to simply hate everything Obama does. I've never seen it like this even compared to Watergate and the subsequent impeachment.

I think the right wing has been overrun by a lot of really weird internet hermits that hate everybody and blog about someone or something they hate every single day. Primary hatred of course is directed to number 1.

I don't know. He wasn't as clueless as, say, Reagan could be. He would have been constrained about the damn law, by necessity, but I like to think he would have had something decent to say.

Reagan was suffering from Alzheimer's much earlier than people want to believe and one of the first symptoms is extremely inappropriate behavior. Given that, much as it galls me, he gets a pass. No human deserves Alzheimers.

GHWBush could be reasonable. He'd have said something similar to what Obama said. This was also someone who walked away from the safety of the Ivy League to become the youngest naval aviator of his time and nearly died for his patriotism.

Slick Willie would have probably done the best of the bunch. He'd have spun a yarn and we'd all be sucked right on in for the sax break and the underwear joke.

GWBush would have wanted to say something like his father but would have probably mangled it unless you caught him off guard with the question. He seemed to do worse with these kinds of things the longer they sat and boiled on the stove. Katrina is the worst of all worlds for him.

Obama, well, he's damed if he does, damned if he doesn't. But in the end he always seems to realize that it's better to be a dead lion than a live lamb - and it's often even easier to be a live lion because the lion hunters will run away at the first roar...

For what my thoughts are worth.

It's a very hard statement to argue with.

And this is why I didn't want this to be a discussion about race, because we've totally moved off the subject that really matters: The shitty law that made this all possible. Without that law, it wouldn't matter Martin's race, Zimmerman would be sitting in a jail cell right now.

But it IS a discussion about race - we wouldn't have to be worrying about the misapplication of the law (that's what it is - the law as written does NOT support Zimmerman's murderous actions) if Zimmerman wasn't a racist slimebag. With or without that law, he would ave done the same thing he did - & lying to the police about "oh, it was self-defense" would have resulted in the same situation has, now.

Someone mentioned the O.J. Simpson case. As much as I still believe that case was a blatant, horrific miscarriage of justice, in which cynical lawyers played the race card shamelessly, seeing what the police did with Trayvon Martin's killing I can almost understand now how...as wrong and misguided as they were..the jurors were persuaded that even if guilty Simpson somehow deserved a break, that he was a victim of racist cops planting evidence. It doesn't excuse their failure, of course--Simpson DID viciously murder two people with a knife, and he would have done it whether they were white or black. Two innocent people did not get the justice they deserved. But unfortunately, a long history of failing to treat people equally under the law helped lead to that travesty of a trial and that travesty of a verdict.

These guys are very easy to figure out.

He will be Hannity's "Why Obama hates White people" correspondent.
