Unbelievable: Newt Gingrich Calls Obama’s Comments on Trayvon Martin ‘Disgraceful’

A new low for the serial philanderer

Speaking today on the Sean Hannity radio show, Newt Gingrich found a way to picture President Obama’s remarks on Trayvon Martin as “disgraceful.”

What’s disgraceful is Gingrich’s bizarre criticism; believe it or not, he’s saying that Obama would have been just fine “if it had been a white who had been shot.” What the hell is wrong with Newt Gingrich?

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich harshly criticized President Obama for commenting on Trayvon Martin’s race as he extended condolences to the 17-year-old shooting victim’s parents on Friday. Obama said, “If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon,” a remark that Gingrich said he found “disgraceful” and “appalling.”

“What the president said, in a sense, is disgraceful,” Gingrich said on the Hannity Radio show. “It’s not a question of who that young man looked like. Any young American of any ethnic background should be safe, period. We should all be horrified no matter what the ethnic background.

“Is the president suggesting that if it had been a white who had been shot, that would be OK because it didn’t look like him. That’s just nonsense dividing this country up. It is a tragedy this young man was shot. It would have been a tragedy if he had been Puerto Rican or Cuban or if he had been white or if he had been Asian American of if he’d been a Native American. At some point, we ought to talk about being Americans. When things go wrong to an American, it is sad for all Americans. Trying to turn it into a racial issue is fundamentally wrong. I really find it appalling.”

Andrew Kaczynski posted the recording of this disgusting attack on the President:

Youtube Video

Gingrich knows damned well that President Obama never suggested anything like this. He’s pandering to the lunatic GOP base, with one of the most despicable straw man arguments I’ve yet seen from the right. Sickening.

Oh look it's someone inflaming racial tension (blacks don't care about white people) over the Trayvon Martin situation, Kilgore, tell us how much you hate Newt for doing this!

2 Kragar  Fri, Mar 23, 2012 5:16:56pm

Because if you say this is a terrible thing, you obviously support it when something similar happens...

Wait, what the fuck is Newt talking about?

3 Targetpractice  Fri, Mar 23, 2012 5:17:40pm

And this is why I didn't want this to be a discussion about race, because we've totally moved off the subject that really matters: The shitty law that made this all possible. Without that law, it wouldn't matter Martin's race, Zimmerman would be sitting in a jail cell right now.

4 Obdicut  Fri, Mar 23, 2012 5:17:42pm

Obama wasn't talking to you, Newt.

But my main message is to the parents of Trayvon Martin. If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon.

So shut the fuck up.

re: #3 Targetpractice

Well, I don't think that there's any law giving coverage to the guy who assaulted the black homeless dude and wasn't charged by the same police department, so-- maybe, maybe not.

I also don't think the law made the PD have Trayvon as a John Doe for three days while they had his cell phone.

So there's some aspects here aside from the shitty law.

Newt is either an ignorant moron or pandering to the worst degree.

Obama didn't 'make this a racial issue,' Zimmerman did.

The law didn't make an investigating officer correct a witness to her face simply because her story contradicted the shooter's version of events.

Indeed, but how much of the cover-up that began the moment the cops arrived was due to a police department with a documented history of issues where race is concerned and how much is as a result of this law? There's been cases in other counties similar to this, of altercations resulting in the shooter walking free because he cried "self-defense!"

13 Kronocide  Fri, Mar 23, 2012 5:26:34pm

I have no problem whatsoever with what Obama said. He tactfully expressed sympathy and concern for the family, and for justice. Without acting stupidly.

So when he doesn't act stupidly, Newt still finds a way to assume he acted stupidly.

Which means Newt acted stupidly.

15 Charles Johnson  Fri, Mar 23, 2012 5:27:55pm

This is quite a bit further out than I thought even people like Hannity and Gingrich would go.

The sheer mean-spiritedness of saying something like this is horrifying. President Obama expressed a simple human feeling of empathy with an unjustly murdered child -- identifying with the victim because it could have been his own child. And that's "disgraceful" to these right wing assholes?

I really haven't been this disgusted with the Republican Party and the right in general in a long, long time. This isn't just opportunistic, it's flat out inhuman.

You know, the line that goes "You only care about this because the kid was black!" Not that he was gunned down by a vigilante with a Dirty Harry complex, not that guilty of nothing more than walking in the rain with his hood up, not that there's an emerging pattern showing that this law has turned Florida into a shooting gallery.

There's a reason that Trayvon Martin's story hits me so hard. When you're thirteen and threatened with a bullet through the chest for getting your braces tightened, it teaches you how the world works, and does it in a hurry.

My favorite comment there:

This is why the white folks like me who are shouting “We are all Trayvon Martin” now are…not. That’s the point.

He's the tip of the iceberg. American conservatism is being dominated by people that think empathy is a weakness, who derive a sense of satisfaction from the power to dominate others. Might really does make right, and truth emanates from the strength to force others to compliance. Look at how twisted their variant of Christianity is: there's no Christ in it. But it isn't just the religion the reflects it: the economics, the social policies, the international relations...all are built on magical thinking and the presumption that when they win, it's because they're fated and deserving, Their ends will always justify their means, and they see no contradiction in holding others to a standard they don't (and won't) obey.

The hoodie is really a very practical garment. For all the mothers who tell their kids to put something on their head when they go outside in the cold, why would you be afraid of a kid in a hoodie? It's shirt, jacket, scarf and hat all in one.

Now, I can understand hoodies being worn inside. Kids need to be taught to take off the hood in a store or whatever just like we used to teach them to take off their hats indoors --basic etiquette and makes you look much less suspicious on security cameras.

Peeps, I'm from Florida, my Dad lives in South Carolina. Two places with large diverse populations. Where the division has maintained. Ya, there aren't white only bathrooms anymore, but damn, there's an unwritten way. My Dad is kind enough to not say n** anymore since I called his ass on it.

I'm liberal, unabashedly, but I'm a damn human too. A member of this society. I want it to be a good place. Peeps are peeps, no matter their fucking defining difference. (color) I hate that it's still such a problem in America. And do not doubt for a moment, it's still a major prob.

What are we going to do?

Rep John Lewis is an American Hero. There's probably 5 people I'd like to meet before my demise, and he is one. He was on CNN this afternoon, but I missed most of it. This is not the whole interview, but he talks a little bit about it.

About the racial issues, we need to educate people. Not just kids. (And Newt may be too far gone...) But these discussions I think are ultimately good.

The second issue is 1) arrest George Zimmernan, for pete's sake and 2) to repeal that damn law.

Ah powder burns showing up on someone's clothing as a way of showing if the shooter and his victim were close together or not, something I learned from playing Phoenix Wright....

Now if only we could get Miles Edgeworth (post character development) to prosecute Zimmerman....

Facebook speaks out . . .

Egan said that Facebook has seen a "distressing increase" in reports of job candidates being asked for their passwords over the past few months. She notes the practice violates not just the user's privacy but also that of his or her Facebook friends.
It also might violate employment laws, according to the post.
"(W)e don't think it's right the thing to do," she said. "But it also may cause problems for the employers that they are not anticipating. For example, if an employer sees on Facebook that someone is a member of a protected group (e.g. over a certain age, etc.) that employer may open themselves up to claims of discrimination if they don't hire that person.

I'm guessing job applicants were either required to provide links to their account on a written application beforehand, or employers verified the existence of their account before the interview (if, like the a typical facebook user, it showed your real name and photo).

But then you have to wonder what would happen if spoof/impersonation accounts were set up - you could always make one as a decoy, I suppose...

I can see the social scientists using basic stats from fb to determine if you would fit well into a corporation. How many friends you have, are you going to play high-school mind games, are you a loner, do you play well with others --etc.

But I also think there are some pretty good hiring tests that can be given that determine the same thing without the liability that goes with breaking privacy laws.

I can just see the law suits. "I was fired because . . . .. I have proof because I posted it on my fb and they have my password etc . . . . "

Yeah, I'd just love to be the attorney arguing for the corporation on that one.

One of my x coworkers comes over to my house sometimes and I don't hear him knocking on my door. I tell him to come around to the back and knock on my window.. do you know what he says???? It's not true:

There is a great deal of misinformation surrounding the Trayvon Martin shooting. Here are some of the most prominent misunderstandings:

Cops returned the gun to shooter George Zimmerman.

Untrue, according to police. Sanford Officer Tim Smith handcuffed Zimmerman, and then pulled from a holster in Zimmerman's waistband the black Kel Tec 9 mm PF9, a semiautomatic. The gun is now in the possession of authorities, officially part of the evidence in the case.

Zimmerman, though, still has a valid concealed-weapons permit.

The black person would take the attention of the clerk because they would be suspicious of them and then the white person (who they wouldn't be paying attention to) would to the stealing.

Early lesson in subtle prejudice.

The police simply never, ever return a gun that's just been used to kill someone, not even when that gun belongs to a cop involved in the cleanest of clean shootings. The reasons go beyond the idea of an ongoing investigation, it CYA. If the same weapon gets released and immediately ends up involved in another shooting/homicide the legal liability could end up bankrupting the community. People have to petition to get their guns back, even when they're stolen, and the process takes time by design.

As my momma always told me, you can't pick your family.

In the article here posted above, there is this that grabbed me (all of it was wonderful):

Distant memories, indeed, those days when Obama would stand before a microphone and confront the raw complexities of race head on. In 2008, having stitched his loving, bigoted white grandmother and his loving, bigoted black pastor together in a single American tapestry, he was outlining the reflexes – spasms, really – that often result when matters of race explode onto the national scene. And he was offering another option.

The anger that the Right has for him over those two people is so displaced. First, he's neither of those people, yet they were/are both near and dear to him. None of us, not one of us, buys the political or socio beliefs of our family members hook, line and sinker! In fact, oftentimes the very things we abhor in our loved ones are political or socio differences. We often (not always) end up having to learn to love them despite what they say. Much harder when it's a parent, because you only have one of each.

Friday, March 23 at 8:30 pm on Channel 12.1

I think Obama injected race into this. Zimmerman should be given a fair trial.
Further, the Florida "stand you ground law" was not intended to be a "007" law.

That's bullshit and you (should) know it; everything from Zimmerman's choice of who to pursue, accost, and shoot dead to the Sanford PD's response and actions from the moment of the shooting onward stinks to high heaven. Race was there from the beginning, as sad, angry, and frustrated as it makes me and should make you; if one can't see that reality, I can't do anything for them.

President Obama was making a personal comment, seeing as he IS black and all, and I thought it was spot on. As much as I'd like Zimmerman to go to trial and get life in the pen, the fucked-up SYG law and the actions of the Sanford PD may get him off, so I hope the Martin family takes everything he's got and will ever have in a civil trial, because it may be the only semblance of justice they'll ever get for the senseless loss of their son.

As far as Zimmerman's motivation to pursue and shoot Trayvon Martin dead in the street, I think those "they always get away" and "fucking coons" remarks of his on that 911 tape are as clear as Waterford crystal. When an unarmed black minor is stalked and killed, left unidentified for three days in the morgue, when no effort is taken to canvas the community he was killed in to find out who he was, and the police go out of their way to correct a witness to feed her the shooter's version of events, it's automatically injected with race. You seem to be pretending that this society's historical valuation of blacks is immaterial, that it's somehow inappropriate to mention the elephant in the room, to acknowledge the painfully obvious thing that's on everyone's minds, whether they have the honesty to admit it or not.

282 b_Snark  Fri, Mar 23, 2012 8:27:02pm

There was a post up above that linked to a strange screed listing what should be included in a 'fair and balanced' MSM articles about the Obama reign.

In the screed was a comment and a link to another article about the revised costs of Obamacare and the comparison of the 2010 and 2012 CBO estimates. The main claim was that the new 10 year estimate of 1.76 trillion is almost double the previous estimate of 940 billion, a difference of 87%. This is a humdinger of a lie.

The first misrepresentation is the change from billions to trillions.
940 billion looks a lot smaller than 1.76 trillion because of the emotional jump from billion to trillion. Change it to 1760 billion and that emotional jump isn't there.

Here's the lie.
The 2010 estimate covers the 10 years from 2010 to 2019.
The 2012 estimate covers the 11 years from 2012 to 2022.

If the comparison is ten years, the 2012 estimate = 1495 billion a difference of 59%.

However if we compare what should be compared, the years where both estimate contain values, the story is completely different.
The 2010 8 year estimate = 933 billion
The 2012 8 year estimate = 1011 billion
That is an 8% difference.

The last problem with the RWNJ analysis is they use the gross figures not the net figures.
The 2010 8 year estimate = 784 billion
The 2012 8 year estimate = 772 billion
That is an -2% difference.

Spreadsheet Figures

You weren't talking about the killer's motivation though, you were talking about Obama's message to Martin's parents. Maybe you conflated the two because you have a lazy intellect and the obvious difference escapes you, but Obama never once mentioned Zimmerman or what drove him. Obama simply sought a way to identify with the victim's parents.

Anyway, regardless the police response itself was about race. The undeniable fact is that they simply didn't see Trayvon as a person who's death really mattered, who deserved their professional best. They didn't devalue him because he was young, or because he was wearing a hoodie, they didn't give a shit because he was black. You can deny this, ignore it or spread it on toast, I don't care. Race was already part of this. Obama didn't inject anything that wasn't already there. If you can't see that, you're either ignorant of US history or live on another planet. Saying, "My son would look like him," is a pretty tepid observation on his part, hardly anything pernicious, just a reality.

Why would you want to disregard Zimmerman's motivation? Isn't it through trying to understand tragedies like this that maybe future ones can be averted?

Where do you get this idea that a president should never comment on pending prosecutions? If he were to say, "the guy's guilty, fry him," that would be one thing. But a president has an obligation to at least address controversial topics that have the nation (and much of the world) transfixed, particularly when his DOJ is investigating. He can't just pretend like it doesn't exist. (BTW, Clinton commented on the OJ trial, the most controversial of his admin....was that wrong of him to acknowledge an issue that so deeply divided the nation?)

It's only when dishonest inferences are made that inferences become a problem. I completely grossed out a bunch of middle school aged boys when I explained the difference between viviparous and oviviparous births to them last Tuesday.

I think it was repeated use of the word placenta.

Pretty sure it wasn't the explanation that if one baby shark emerges from a oviviparous birth, it wasn't because he/she was the only egg fertilized. The shark's nickname is "Winner."

Actually, it might have been the young man who decided to comment that some animals eat their placentas.

Either way, they were eager to go back to gills and scales.

I would be stunned, but I don't think I can be stunned by this kind of stuff anymore.

That someone would think this issue, which is overflowing with racial aspects from the very beginning and which has snowballed into a big national public brouhaha full of nasty racial stuff being flung hither and thither, can somehow be made "racial" by having the President comment on it after all the above has already happen - well, that's just daffy.

re: #308 Gus

Projecting. I don't know but I was just thinking. Is this response to Obama's statement fall into some aspect of Critical Race Theory? They're obviously injecting race into it themselves which display a constant state of racialism. We know many of these people are downright white nationalists or anglocentrics. No empathy obviously. They can't even connect with his statement on a paternal level.

EXACTLY! I look at that picture of Trayvon and think, what an adorable boy. Can you imagine what he looked like when he was 3? OMG! all my motherly instincts go on full charge.

It's stunning, really. President Obama says "It could have been my son," and right wingers attack him for "injecting race into the discussion."

And they don't even seem to realize that by doing so, they're shining a big bright light on THEIR OWN RACIST ASSUMPTIONS.

It's almost funny, in a not-funny way.

I'm 32 going on thirty three and white as that asparagus they grow in caves. I have no kids, but I have nieces and nephews...and making the empathetic leap of what worries and pain I've experienced--combined with an understanding of how much worse it must be for that other family.

When a teenager dies these days, I think, "by the numbers, that person could almost be my child." It's human, a cognitive easing, to empathize by imagining a comparable situation.

So Obama just shouldn't acknowledge the biggest national news story of the last week? A story drawing attention around the world, and he shouldn't comment at all?

Furthermore, the idea that he shouldn't address racial matters is absurd. All our modern presidents have spoken about race, some more eloquently than others, but it's an issue that can't be ignored by the president of a country with a history like ours.

I just think it's a very strange value system," Gingrich added.

Then, asked whether it concerned him that many people continue to believe Obama is Muslim, Gingrich replied, "It should bother the president. Why does the president behave the way that people would think that? You have to ask, why would they believe that? It's not because they're stupid.

President Obama should not have commented on the case and certainly should have not brought race into it.
The accused should have a fair trial and then be executed.

Step one for a fair trial: actually having the dude accused of something by the law.

A log? You have your own log? Well la-di-dah! I have to use a broken stick, and we share it with all the families in the neighborhood.

A sports car, eh?

re: #227 EdDantes

I think Obama injected race into this. Zimmerman should be given a fair trial.
Further, the Florida "stand you ground law" was not intended to be a "007" law.

I disagree about Obama injecting race, however I am tempted to upding you for your repeated game efforts to rephrase what you mean in an orderly fashion.

;)

I think President Obama stated his opinion and it was an emotional one. Based on his experience as a black man in America. Perhaps the perception of the President's own life experiences makes others uncomfortable.

Gee, didn't that sound more adult than "Suck it haters!"?

Not only must they suck it but their complaining just doesn't make any sense. They were already complaining about Obama's tact.

They just added another level. Gingrich already, always, thinks Obama's a disgrace. The ideal is to simply hate everything Obama does. I've never seen it like this even compared to Watergate and the subsequent impeachment.

I think the right wing has been overrun by a lot of really weird internet hermits that hate everybody and blog about someone or something they hate every single day. Primary hatred of course is directed to number 1.

Wrong DF. The president should not be commenting on cases other than saying it has been referred to the AG's office.

So in other words, he can have an opinion, he just can't express it to anyone or do anything about it.

Gee. Where have I heard that before?

re: #234 dragonfire1981

I wonder how GWB would have reacted to this if he were still in office?

I don't know. He wasn't as clueless as, say, Reagan could be. He would have been constrained about the damn law, by necessity, but I like to think he would have had something decent to say.

402 Gus  Fri, Mar 23, 2012 9:22:33pm

All I know is that I'll be glad when I don't have to hear or read this disgusting man's words anymore. I don't even like the sound of his voice.

No, but I agree that President Obama should not have commented on the case.

Why not? It's an atrocious and scandalous case, and the nation is following it closely.

And I believe he was directly asked to comment on it. What was he supposed to say? No comment?

re: #290 The Ghost of a Flea

And where did the "injection of race" occur in Obama's statement?

"He could have been my son," is a race-neutral statement from a white politician, and a race-specific one from a black politician.

This is sarcastic, also true.

Reagan was suffering from Alzheimer's much earlier than people want to believe and one of the first symptoms is extremely inappropriate behavior. Given that, much as it galls me, he gets a pass. No human deserves Alzheimers.

GHWBush could be reasonable. He'd have said something similar to what Obama said. This was also someone who walked away from the safety of the Ivy League to become the youngest naval aviator of his time and nearly died for his patriotism.

Slick Willie would have probably done the best of the bunch. He'd have spun a yarn and we'd all be sucked right on in for the sax break and the underwear joke.

GWBush would have wanted to say something like his father but would have probably mangled it unless you caught him off guard with the question. He seemed to do worse with these kinds of things the longer they sat and boiled on the stove. Katrina is the worst of all worlds for him.

Obama, well, he's damed if he does, damned if he doesn't. But in the end he always seems to realize that it's better to be a dead lion than a live lamb - and it's often even easier to be a live lion because the lion hunters will run away at the first roar...

For what my thoughts are worth.

re: #324 goddamnedfrank

Obama did not comment on Zimmerman's motivations. How many times is this going to have to be stated before you begin to comprehend it?

If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon. I think [Trayvon's parents] are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves, and we are going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened.

It's a very hard statement to argue with.

This is a tragic loss of life. These are tough times, for everyone involved. I've spoken with some spiritual leaders in the community of Sanford to see if we could come up with a plan to bring back that community back together again. I'm sending a member from are justice team to speak with the local police chief there. Aint' that's right John? Well, that about all I can say. Thank you all, and God bless America. -- Not George W. Bush

re: #3 Targetpractice

And this is why I didn't want this to be a discussion about race, because we've totally moved off the subject that really matters: The shitty law that made this all possible. Without that law, it wouldn't matter Martin's race, Zimmerman would be sitting in a jail cell right now.

But it IS a discussion about race - we wouldn't have to be worrying about the misapplication of the law (that's what it is - the law as written does NOT support Zimmerman's murderous actions) if Zimmerman wasn't a racist slimebag. With or without that law, he would ave done the same thing he did - & lying to the police about "oh, it was self-defense" would have resulted in the same situation has, now.

413 Tigger2005  Fri, Mar 23, 2012 11:10:33pm

Someone mentioned the O.J. Simpson case. As much as I still believe that case was a blatant, horrific miscarriage of justice, in which cynical lawyers played the race card shamelessly, seeing what the police did with Trayvon Martin's killing I can almost understand now how...as wrong and misguided as they were..the jurors were persuaded that even if guilty Simpson somehow deserved a break, that he was a victim of racist cops planting evidence. It doesn't excuse their failure, of course--Simpson DID viciously murder two people with a knife, and he would have done it whether they were white or black. Two innocent people did not get the justice they deserved. But unfortunately, a long history of failing to treat people equally under the law helped lead to that travesty of a trial and that travesty of a verdict.

At this point Newt knows his political career is over. So what does he do? He is establishing his "Hate Obama" creds with the Sean Hannity audience so he can get paid when he does leave the GOP race.

These guys are very easy to figure out.

He will be Hannity's "Why Obama hates White people" correspondent.
