Questionable attire in a photo online is obviously all the justification needed to execute someone, as protected by the 2d amendment.

The Bach is glorious. But then, it's Bach.
I've been listening to Faure's Requiem quite often of late. A very soul calming piece, especially his "In Paradisium"
But the one that I turn to often in these crazy days is Guillaume de Machaut's "Messe de Notre-Dame" from about 1350. Hearing people chanting one of the oldest bits of music that can be ascribed to someone specifically helps keep everything in perspective.

Because the ideas from the ignorant inbred morans at Stormfront have been integrated and accepted into mainstream RWNJ thought. The same old resentments have been packaged and re-packaged over the decades as mainstream concern trolling about welfare queens, crack whores, affirmative action, and who knows what else.
The GOP spent 40 years playing with this sort of fire, and now they're getting burned by it as the RWNJ base keeps pulling out the racism and bigotry in both the Trayvon Martin and Shaima Alawadi cases.

By the way - after giving it a lot of thought, I'm going to start limiting the number of Pages that can be posted by a user to two per hour, and see how that goes.
I haven't written the code yet, but it's coming soon.
I think that's a great idea. No more having to try to calculate when is the best time to post something so it'll have a chance of being seen.
Maybe I'm just being paranoid & imagining things, but it also seems that sometimes pages are purposely driven down off the top of the list. It doesn't happen as much now as it used to, but that's what it felt like sometimes. *removes tin foil hat*
Crap, the other day I thought of a feature for the pages I wanted to ask you about, but I didn't write it down and now I've forgotten what it was. I suppose it'll come back to me sooner or later. :-/

Here's what sucks about "Mad Men." They are trying to produce some generic "60's" program and stick in random music and fashions from different parts of the decade without context.
The 40's can be divided into war/postwar, the '50's were all kind of generic, but the '60's were very distinct:
Eisenhower/Kennedy
Kennedy assassination changed everything
The Beatles
Civil Rights
Motown
Hippies
Vietnam
1967 was very distinct from 1962. You can't cram bits of 1967 into a TV show and pretend that it's 1962.

Rick Santorum: Mitt Romney 'Worst Republican' To Face Obama
An agitated Rick Santorum on Sunday called Mitt Romney "the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama" even as it appears the former Massachusetts governor is on pace to clinch the party's nomination in June.
Santorum later lashed out at reporters, using a profane word as he accused them of "distorting" his speech.
Santorum told voters that Romney is "uniquely disqualified" to be the GOP's presidential pick and urged his supporters to stand with him even as he faces an increasingly improbable pathway to the nomination. Santorum said "the race isn't over until the people of Wisconsin sing," and urged them to give his underfunded, underdog campaign a chance to derail Romney.
"Pick any other Republican in the country. He is the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama," Santorum said at an evening rally near Racine.

After Wisconsin and Maryland vote, there is nothing of note till New York and Pennsylvania vote on April 24th. The Keystone state is Rick Santorum's home state, but New york has more delegates and Mitt's money and organization will give him a decisive advantage in the Empire State. That leaves Santorum in desperate need of a win on April 3rd in order to maintain the momentum he needs to get donations. Pennsylvania has two major media markets, which means its an expensive state to compete in.

Speaking with my mother (who lives back in fly-over country) tonight she commented on how cold March used to be when she was a kid, compared to this year with all the record breaking heat.
Coincidentally, Prof. Rick Rood has a new blog entry up looking at how seasons are changing along with the temperatures and what it means to growing seasons. It's a nice summary piece:
The U.S. has just experienced an intense heat event with many records falling in the eastern half of the U.S. Here is Chris Burt’s post on the historic event. There is an excellent discussion of this event and its relation to a warming climate by Andrew Freedman at Climate Central. (Global Warming May Have Fueled March Heath Odds) I have a talk to give next week, and I am sure that the heat will contribute to questions. A question that has been put to me frequently in the past weeks is that should we expect such high temperatures in the future?
Usually when I talk about evidence of a warming, I talk about coherent and convergent evidence. That is, one can’t just look at the global surface temperature data and state that the planet has warmed. But if you look at the surface temperature data along with many other sources of data, then one finds that the evidence of warming is overwhelming. If you add the impacts of this warming to ecosystems, for example, the observations that spring is coming earlier over most of the land area in the Northern Hemisphere, then the evidence becomes smothering. For me and many others this evidence of warming is convincing, but it relies on pulling together information from many sources, explaining their relationships, and presentation of the information. So as people have asked me about the heat in Michigan and Maine this past week, I have thought of what I could do with just temperature. [...]
He shows the temp anomalies over time and hemisphere, and notes that the 1930's (when my mother was growing up) was actually relatively warm compared to previous and immediately following decades. And yet this spring is much warmer than the 1930's. So my mother's memory is relatively correct, yet her parents and grandparents had even colder years.
Times change, and as humans our personal observations are highly subjective. The climate is indeed changing, as Prof. Rood points out, yet without the instrumental record the sketchiness of the human ability to remember old events would obscure the details of the actual events.
This is one reason why climate change is rather impotent for making political impact, even with all the attention given to it. We humans make decisions on our feelings and beliefs, and climate change is not something which can be perceived (correctly) in any short period. Unlike say rising gasoline prices, which have immediate impact (though they have long term effects also).

Tonight on PBS (running right now) is a short series Finding Your Roots.
Hosted by Henry Louis Gates (yes, that Gates), I'm wondering if it will stir up some wingnuttia (I did notice that the write up the series on Fox Latino has no comments section.)
Also, this series is done by looking at genetic evidence, and tracing ancestry that way. This opens the door to ancestry via DNA as a discussion, which leads (among other things) to discussions over why we know for sure all humans didn't descend from just two people 6000 years ago, and idea still important to about a quarter of the US population.
Should be an interesting series, and I'll be looking to see if there is any perturbation to the wingnut-web.

Some interesting tidbits from over at the Genetic Genealogist:
Last week I participated in a conference call with members of the show, including Senior Story Editor and Producer Leslie Asako Gladsjo and Chief Genealogist Johni Cerny. Also on the call, although only able to participate for a few minutes, was Henry Louis Gates Jr.
Here are some interesting tidbits about Finding Your Roots – and genealogy in general – that I learned from the conversation:
Gates believes that genetic genealogy is deconstructing the notion of race; never has FTDNA or 23andMe returned an African American’s testing results and reported 100% African, for example. In other words, science is demonstrating that things are much more complicated than we would have guessed without the benefit of DNA.
All guests on Finding Your Roots used both 23andMe and FTDNA for DNA testing – all African Americans participating in the series also used African Ancestry. While the guests receive all their results, we may not always see them.
Many are still wary of genetic genealogy; many potential guests even turned down the series largely because of the DNA testing involved.
Gladsjo and Cerny noted that DNA is just another tool for the genealogist; sometimes the guests’ DNA results were very interesting, and sometimes they were “pretty boring.”

That is in error. The law still requires that the person who uses deadly force have reasonable belief that they were in danger of having it used against them.
As an example. as someone much larger and stronger than you ,SFZ (no offense intended), I could not reasonable use such force against you unless I saw or reasonably thought I saw a lethal weapon in your hand. However, you could use deadly force on me if I attacked you, even if I was unarmed. The law recognizes size and strength disparities.

This new series emphasizes the DNA analysis, and has help from the major genetic testing companies like 23andMe.
My mom wants to do genetic testing. She's been following the paper trail on her mother's side for a while, but eventually if you want to find a direct link to African, you probably need the DNA. On my father's paternal side she got to Cuba.

One great grandparent would theoretically contribute on average 12.5% (rounds up to 13%) of your DNA. However, the sorting process during meiosis doesn't evenly distribute the genetic material, and the actual number from one grandparent could range anywhere from 0% to 25% (though both extremes would be exceedingly unlikely.)
I only know of 6 of my great grandparents, the other two are a mystery. The maternal grandfather (who I never met) whose heritage is unknown was of European appearance, but some say he could have been Jewish or Eastern European. I've thought about getting a DNA test to see if analyzing the results could shed any light on this.

Ok! To mix some GLBT content in here, too, while staying relevant, one of the most stereotypical blonde bombshells in her day, Carol Channing, is "25%" African American
[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]
According to Channing's memoirs, when she left home to attend Bennington College in Vermont, her mother informed her that her father, a journalist who Carol had believed was born in Rhode Island, had in fact been born in Augusta, Georgia, to a German-American father and an African-American mother. According to Channing's account, her mother reportedly did not want [Channing] to be surprised "if she had a black baby".[3][4] Channing kept this a secret to avoid any problems on Broadway and in Hollywood, ultimately revealing it only in her autobiography, Just Lucky I Guess (published in 2002). Her autobiography, contains a photograph of her mother but has no photos of her father or son.[5] The book states her father's birth certificate was destroyed in a fire.[6]

I'm starting to wonder. I think his old bigot self was better than bigots these days. But mostly yes. He had a lot of class. Despite that "crypto Nazi" incident. Hey, we're all allowed to explode from time to time. But this? It's like suddenly they all became explosive 24/7.
Buckley was the kind of guy that would make liberals think, "I might not agree with him on many things but some day I'd like to be like that." As for the future of conservatism now? I don't see a Buckley on the horizon for a long time.

Dave Mustaine Unchained: Infowars Exclusive
Rock legend Dave Mustaine joins Alex Jones for a rare and exclusive in-depth interview during which he discusses a wide range of never before explored issues. Dave talks about the early days in Metallica and Megadeth on the 30-year anniversary of the two bands that defined the metal scene. He also discusses his debilitating neck injury, Megadeth's latest release "13″, as well as previous releases like "Endgame" (a reference to the Alex Jones film) and "Peace Sells".
Dave also elaborates on the personal challenges that have shaped him as a person, why rock groups dabble with Satanism and the dark side, and his recent political statements regarding Rick Santorum. This interview is both revealing and informative whether you are a fan of Megadeth or not -- don't miss it!

Proving you're gay to the Turkish army
By Emre Azizlerli
BBC World Service
Military service is mandatory for all Turkish men - they can only escape it if they are ill, disabled or homosexual. But proving homosexuality is a humiliating ordeal.
''They asked me when I first had anal intercourse, oral sex, what sort of toys I played with as a child..."
Ahmet, a young man in his 20s, told officials he was gay at the first opportunity after he was called up, as he and other conscripts underwent a health check.
"They asked me if I liked football, whether I wore woman's clothes or used woman's perfume," he says.
''I had a few days' beard and I am a masculine guy - they told me I didn't look like a normal gay man.''
He was then asked to provide a picture of himself dressed as a woman.
“Start QuoteThe face must be visible, and the photos must show you as the passive partner”
Gokhan Exempted from military service on grounds of homosexuality
''I refused this request,'' he says. ''But I made them another offer, which they accepted.'' Instead he gave them a photograph of himself kissing another man...

That was an example I used. It's an obvious NRA law. And the Florida bumpkins just signed off on it. Thoughts. I don't know. Keep the law but add an automatic grand jury on it? It should be treated as a crime scene and proceed as potential crime regardless. No discretion should be allowed to the on-scene police officer. It must always lead to an "official inquest."

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to stalk a black dude in a hoodie carrying a can of tea and a bag of Skittles and then get into a fight with him so I can shoot him in the head shall not be infringed.

If the law's not simply repealed, then it should be revised on the same lines as current procedure when dealing with cops that kill in the line of duty. Relieve them of any firearms, have their statement videotaped, then confine them to the city limits while a full investigation is done. If anything that is found to suspect a crime has been committed, impanel a grand jury and present the evidence. If nothing comes of it, return their firearms and close the case.
And, for the love of God, make it clear in the revised law that cops are not street judges who are allowed to decide for themselves if a suspect is lying or not.

They already killed any prospect of that in the Florida Senate. At this point we would have to wait for any resulting pressure from a trial. If there even is a trial. Life is often cruel. Even to those that think they've avoided cruelty all their lives.

One of the stupidest parts of these food competition shows is the little clip at the end of the judges' discussion when the host asks the judges "Do you know what you are going to do?"
Never, ever, is there a case when the judges say "No." Of course not, because if they didn't know what they are going to do - which contestant to pick as a winner - the show wouldn't have an ending.

I'll go a little further. The 2nd Amendment in the end is only about a well regulated militia. It was not written with the concern of private gun ownership and it was far from considering the nuances of an ever evolving society.
To that end. Gun ownership is not a right unless it is for purposes of defending national sovereignty. In the end, gun ownership is not a right but it is indeed a privilege. Treat is as such and you won't lose your "gun rights."

There was a moment last week when it looked as if the trade shipping Tebow from the Denver Broncos to the New York Jets might somehow fall through — that Tebow might end up a Jacksonville Jaguar instead, with a guaranteed starting job, a heavily evangelical fan base, and none of the insanity involved in eclipsing Jeremy Lin as the most famous Christian athlete in Babylon-upon-the-Hudson.
O ye of little faith. Did you think that the Lord God of Hosts, having raised Tebow up as a Gideon of the gridiron, would pass up the opportunity to put his faithful servant to the test? Did you think that the angelic screenwriters responsible for scripting last year’s succession of Tebow-related improbabilities had nodded off after the Broncos were dispatched in the A.F.C. playoffs? Did you think that the archons and demiurges who preside over America’s culture war would be content to let Tebow fade into obscurity — some red-state-friendly endorsement deals, a few 6-10 finishes, and then early retirement and a lifetime of under-the-radar charity work?

I always thought the amendment would be better interpreted as requiring those who chose to exercise said right to be enrolled in service. Perhaps not in the army, per se, but in a... well-regulated militia. You know, like the bill says and all...
269 | Lord Baron Viscount Duke Earl Count Planckton Mon, Mar 26, 2012 12:04:06am |
Justice Antonin Scalia, writing for the majority in Heller, stated:Nowhere else in the Constitution does a “right” attributed to “the people” refer to anything other than an individual right. What is more, in all six other provisions of the Constitution that mention “the people,” the term unambiguously refers to all members of the political community, not an unspecified subset. This contrasts markedly with the phrase “the militia” in the prefatory clause. As we will describe below, the “militia” in colonial America consisted of a subset of “the people”— those who were male, able bodied, and within a certain age range. Reading the Second Amendment as protecting only the right to “keep and bear Arms” in an organized militia therefore fits poorly with the operative clause’s description of the holder of that right as “the people”.
Justice John Paul Stevens countered in his dissent:
When each word in the text is given full effect, the Amendment is most naturally read to secure to the people a right to use and possess arms in conjunction with service in a well-regulated militia. So far as appears, no more than that was contemplated. But the Court itself reads the Second Amendment to protect a “subset” significantly narrower than the class of persons protected by the First and Fourth Amendments; when it finally drills down on the substantive meaning of the Second Amendment, the Court limits the protected class to “law-abiding, responsible citizens”.

so, to summarize:
1. SF cops say that this was a murder suicide and nobody needs to worry because the guy is dead
2. SF cops say that this was a gang hit for gambling debts, and arrest two guys for it.
3. SF cops say this isn't gang related, they really don't know the motivation, and have a single guy in custody for it.
Who knows what it'll be tomorrow?

776.032 Immunity from criminal prosecution and civil action for justifiable use of force.—
(1) A person who uses force as permitted in s. 776.012, s. 776.013, or s. 776.031 is justified in using such force and is immune from criminal prosecution and civil action for the use of such force, unless the person against whom force was used is a law enforcement officer, as defined in s. 943.10(14), who was acting in the performance of his or her official duties and the officer identified himself or herself in accordance with any applicable law or the person using force knew or reasonably should have known that the person was a law enforcement officer. As used in this subsection, the term “criminal prosecution” includes arresting, detaining in custody, and charging or prosecuting the defendant.(2) A law enforcement agency may use standard procedures for investigating the use of force as described in subsection (1), but the agency may not arrest the person for using force unless it determines that there is probable cause that the force that was used was unlawful.
(3) The court shall award reasonable attorney’s fees, court costs, compensation for loss of income, and all expenses incurred by the defendant in defense of any civil action brought by a plaintiff if the court finds that the defendant is immune from prosecution as provided in subsection (1).
In short, the cops couldn't arrest Zimmerman without convincing proof that he was lying, as doing so without that proof would allow him to sue them under section 3. Considering the number of cases that have been brought up where the killer walked free after the judge decided they acted in "self-defense," my guess is that the possibility that Zimmerman might sue them was enough to make them more accepting of his story.

re: #302 'M AFFN FUN
BTW, can anyone tell me what part of the SYG law specifically tells the police to believe a shooter?
Nothing in it does, but unless they can sign an affidavit saying they have reason to believe the shooting occurred in an illegal fashion, they can't make the arrest. A judge has to approve the warrant for the arrest. They don't have to say they're certain, but they have to say that more likely than not, a crime has occurred.
They'd have to have factual reason to believe that the 'defender' either wasn't defending himself, or didn't have reasonable fear. Otherwise, no crime has occurred.
Some police have arrested people anyway, and had the arrests vacated by judges on these grounds. Complicating this is that the Florida Supreme Court has ruled that a judge, not a jury, decides the fitness of this defense.

In this case, even hindered by the dumb law, the police obviously should have held Zimmerman as a witness, as they're allowed to do for 48 hours, since there was some sort of crime-- if he used self-defense, then he was assaulted. That they didn't use the 48 hour hold is their obvious failing.

Indeed, it's turned criminal prosecution on its ear. Now, you can catch the killer standing over the body, smoking gun in hand, and still not be able to touch him the moment he invokes "self-defense." And while you're going over the crime scene with a fine-toothed comb, trying to find evidence to obliterate his story, he's destroying any evidence on himself that would convict him if a judge decides the case has merit.

A mixture of both. I think the police at the scene did a poor job-- more than a poor job, since they 'corrected' a witness, failed to take a bunch of evidence, etc-- which could have established enough for a probable arrest. The law is also at fault because forensic evidence often can't give enough detail about who initiated an encounter, and the law does not in any way take into account the situation leading up to the incident except vague language about 'provoking' the attack.

Well, as I said, the cops can hold anyone for 48 hours as a material witness, and they should have. There was definitely a crime, since if self-defense is invoked there's the claim that the person using it was the victim of a crime themselves. That'd stop the evidence destruction.
However, the problem still exists because there may simply not be evidence to show who 'started it'.
I really do think the problem extends beyond the SYG-- SYG simply exacerbates an existing problem.

Temporarily, yes. He would have to be charged within 72 hours or released, during which time they would have to establish enough probable cause to file charges.
Which, without this law and the need to disprove "reasonably believe," would have been an easier prospect. Not guaranteed by any measure, but it certainly would have put an onus on Zimmerman to prove his defense in a court of law, rather than taken at face value.

re: #312 ObdicutSo without the law the police would be able to arrest him without probable cause?
No, without the law it could be more easily assumed that he had opportunities to retreat that he did not take. But this is what I mean about it exacerbating an existing problem. If Zimmerman, instead of pursuing Trayvon, had simply encountered him, and provoked a scuffle of some sort-- perhaps threatening him with a gun-- and Trayvon had attempted to disarm him, and Zimmerman had then shot him, he could still invoke self-defense with or without SYG, and the cops would have to show that he had an opportunity for retreat.
That is why I do think this is also about 'gun rights', specifically, the right to go around armed and looking for trouble.
What SYG does is remove one way that the cops can show that the shooting was purposeful, by removing any duty to retreat.
A lot of the time, the only reason the cops are able to get an arrest is because, after questioning the suspect (not having arrested him) during the initial hold, they find inconsistencies in their story that show probable cause that the encounter was not self-defense. SYG simply makes the story easier to tell; the potential for abuse is always there.

Indeed, once an altercation has begun, it doesn't matter who started it. If the party with the gun "reasonably believes" his life in danger, then the law states he can default directly to deadly force. That even if an avenue of escape presents itself, he's under no obligation to take it.
It's the kind of law that plays perfectly to shitheels like George Zimmerman, allowing them to indulge in power fantasies with the safety feature that if they ever get in above their weight class, they can shoot to kill and claim "self-defense."

Well yeah, but it's not the same thing as charging him with the crime.
Arrest = any time you're physically restrained by the cops from leaving, with the exception of the beginning of an 'investigatory stop'.
Charged = an affidavit sworn out for a warrant for you, or a judge charges you after an officer has placed you under arrest for a felony that he had probable reason to suspect occurred and you participated in.
So, coming upon two guys fighting, the cops might arrest them both, but only charge one-- or neither--- afterwards.

But the problem was with with the lack of arrest (and subsequent procedures, like testing), not charging (which might have been easier after arrest). So then that's the main problem with the law, not that it removes one avenue of proof.

Basically, I used 'arrest' somewhat sloppily, when I should have said 'charged'.
As with the NYPD: they should be required to initiate an investigation into a potential homicide. Under Florida law they are not.

then he is not an "intruder"
But the police doesn't know, so they still investigate and search for evidence of intrusion, don't just assume the intrusion, right? And in theory (and I understand that it doesn't mean in practice) then it shouldn't matter whether he died on the street or not, since there was an intrusion, as established by the investigation.

yes, if the police can establish that the person shot was an intruder.

I'm not sure if the 'main' problem is really determinable. There are multiple problems, at any given juncture one may be more or less problematic than the other. In this case, the cops apparently completely failed to do any sort of good questioning or evidence collection. The law limits the easiest way of disproving a self-defense claim-- that you had an avenue for escape or retreat and did not take it.
This same story could have happened without the SYG law, and a lot of people-- both defenders and attackers of the law-- are mixing up the 'stand' part as part of the requirements, rather than the right granted.
But the SYG law is problematic in this circumstance because the shooter doesn't even have to assert that they made any attempt to escape or any attempt to judge whether or not whether they could escape the situation, and it codifies the self-defense right as the right to use lethal force in respond to a 'reasonable' fear of severe injury, which has so far been interpreted to mean a fear of basically any sort of aggressive motion on the other's part.
So the problems I'd say are fourfold, each making each other worse:
1. Cops didn't investigate.
2. The law removes the need to de-escalate or escape if able
3. The law has, through rulings, been established to mean that 'reasonable' fear is basically any aggressive act as interpreted by the shooter.
4. All of this is determined by a judge, not a jury, and it doesn't serve as part of a defense against a charge, but a denial of a charge in the first place.

334 | Obdicut Mon, Mar 26, 2012 5:38:04am |
There's also the obvious problem that the law informs gun-holders that they don't have the need to flee, which is the obvious practical problem, even if it were somehow ideologically desirable. It's worse for both the guy with the gun and the 'attacker', even if the guy is being attacked, for him to simply shoot it out. If a guy is coming at you with an axe to kill you, and you have an opportunity to escape, for the love of god take it, because you might miss, the gun might jam, you might just wound him, and then you've got an axe in your chest.
And if the guy is actually coming at you with an axe because he sees a rabid badger charging you and he's trying to save you, then, obviously, that's even worse.

Well, that's true of normal 'self-defense' too, though. It just makes your surviving testimony a lot more valuable. If you mugged a guy and shot him without SYG, and could claim that he tried to grab your gun, you could make a self-defense claim, too, and the cops would have have to show reasonable evidence that it didn't go down the way you said it did. With SYG, you could claim that he tried to grab your gun, and the cops would still have to show reasonable evidence that your account wasn't true, but your account would have to also include a description of why you couldn't escape or de-escalate the situation.

Nah, just a panicking guy. Most people aren't that coherent in those situations. It's one of the things that has to be taught a lot to cops is the ability to speak while doing complicated, panicky stuff. A friend of mine got a serious tongue-lashing from his instructor because, at the point where he was supposed to say "Police! Police!" as he ran, he shouted "Motherfucker!"

Also, stand your ground has eroded the existing case law which took the circumstances surrounding the shooting more into account, since it defines self-defense as beginning at the moment of the attack, and it legitimizes the use of force commesureate to the amount of injury you think you're going to sustain.
For example: Under California law, if a guy was coming at you with an axe, you'd first have the obligation to retreat if you could-- and really, judges and juries are very reasonable about this, if you're caught flat-footed they don't demand that you turn your back and run-- and second, if you had a non-lethal weapon at your disposal, to use that. So, if you had both a gun and a taser, you'd have to use the taser. Under this Florida law, you could just shoot the guy, because he was trying to use lethal force on you.
So, under California law, Zimmerman would have to explain why it was necessary to shoot Trayvon, and why he couldn't subdue him through other means. Under this Florida law, he doesn't have to justify that the use of lethal force was necessary.

Really, under the Florida law as written, he doesn't have to justify anything. The cops have to prove he wasn't justified, which can be an insurmountable hurdle when you're dealing with a situation such as with Zimmerman, where there's no witnesses to the initial confrontation that aren't pushing up daisies. By the time it had attracted witnesses, they were already well into the physical portion of the activities, which serve as enough justification under the law for Zimmerman to utilize lethal force.

I do think the part of the Florida law that okays the use of lethal force based on the perceived threat, rather than mandating that the use of force be only what is necessary to counter the attack, is an important part that's kind of getting lost in the "stand your ground" portion of this. You could much more easily establish probable cause to believe that Zimmerman didn't have to shoot, than didn't have to take any action at all, if that makes sense.

I believe I understand what you're trying to say. Eyewitnesses, as well as the police report, showed that by the end of the altercation, before Zimmerman fired the fatal shot, that Trayvon was on his stomach with hands under him, while Zimmerman straddled him. In absence of the SYG law, Zimmerman would have had to explain why, when he clearly had Martin subdued, he chose to use lethal force rather than hold him until cops arrived.
With the SYG law there, all he has to say is that the moment he had an opening, he fired out of fear for his life. Once he did that, the cops could not legally arrest him.

As Rick Santorum himself admits, you’re not a true conservative until you criticize the New York Times.
Late Sunday night in Wisconsin, Rick Santorum lashed out against New York Times campaign reporter Jeff Zeleny for “distorting” his words. “It’s bullshit,” Santorum told the reporter. “Come on, man, what are you doing?”
Santorum brushed the comment aside during a Fox and Friends interview on Monday. “If you haven’t cursed out a New York Times reporter during the course of a campaign, you’re not really a real Republican is the way I look at it,” Santorum said, beaming. “We’re out there slugging away … and we’re mixing it up.”

Florida is at the forefront of more than 20 states with such National Rifle Association-backed laws. In a 2009 report issued by the San Francisco-based Legal Community Against Violence, already there were alarms sounding about the danger to public safety and the hamstringing of police and prosecutors. From the report (pdf):
In recent years, the gun lobby has promoted the enactment of so-called "shoot first" laws, dangerous alterations to traditional self-defense principles that generally: 1) presume that a person's actions in using deadly force in self-defense were reasonable; 2) expand the use of deadly force in self-defense to locations outside the home; 3) broaden the situations in which a person can respond with deadly force to those where no imminent danger exists; and 4) immunize persons acting in self-defense from criminal prosecution and civil liability if they injure or kill anyone, including innocent bystanders, while acting in self-defense. Thus far, more than 20 states have heeded the gun lobby's call and adopted "shoot first" laws, also referred to as "no retreat," "stand your ground," or "make my day" laws.

Afghan massacre suspect's wife: 'He did not do this'
The wife of a U.S. soldier accused of murdering 17 Afghan civilians believes her husband could not have carried out the crime.
“I don't think anything will really change my mind in believing that he did not do this,’’ Kari Bales told TODAY’s Matt Lauer in an exclusive interview that aired Monday. “This is not what it appears to be.’’
On March 23, Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales was charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder for killing 17 civilians in two southern Afghanistan villages earlier in March. He allegedly left his base early in the morning and shot the Afghan civilians — including nine children and four women — while they slept in their beds. Bales is also alleged to have carried out the killings in two waves, returning to his base before leaving again to murder more civilians in what is the worst alleged Afghan civilian killing by an American in the decade-long war.
“I just don't think he was involved,’’ his wife said. “I don't know enough information. This is not him. It's not him."
“He’s kind of in shock about the whole thing,’’ Bales' attorney, John Henry Browne, told NBC News. “He’s very emotional. He’s kind of like a deer in the highlights.’’

We have a regular routine and wash the dogs at the very least once a month. More like every 2 weeks. 1 dog smells, 3 dogs really smell. They slobber on each other and it gets pretty nasty sometimes.
Old Man dog is used to it, he just mopes into the shower, lays down over the drain and looks basically like Eeyore. "Well, let's just get it over with."
The two older ones submit to the blow-dry as part of the routine. Brat Puppy still has to be held.

The hardest part is keeping the ears clean so they don't get infections.

Nonprofits aren't allowed to behave that way. These organizations make a deal with the IRS; they don't pay taxes, but they have to obey certain rules. And one such rule dictates that a nonprofit must respond to a request for certain information within 30 days. If Project Veritas was a nonprofit organization, they were apparently breaking the law.
He goes on to describe O'Keefe's lame attempt to get back at him. Good stuff.

Do your dogs do the thing re: #384 ggt
We have a regular routine and wash the dogs at the very least once a month. More like every 2 weeks. 1 dog smells, 3 dogs really smell. They slobber on each other and it gets pretty nasty sometimes.
Old Man dog is used to it, he just mopes into the shower, lays down over the drain and looks basically like Eeyore. "Well, let's just get it over with."
The two older ones submit to the blow-dry as part of the routine. Brat Puppy still has to be held.
Then, when it is all over, they get CHEESE!
My dog doesn't hate getting washed, although she's not exactly a huge fan of it (it works best when we wash her outside with a hose), but man, she just loves life as soon as the bath is over. She runs around the house like a maniac for about 10 minutes, seemingly ecstatic for some reason. My friend has a pit bull that does the same thing. Do your dogs do that also?

We take our Golden Retriever to the vet to get bathed. They do it for $19! She has allergies so is always scratching and licking, so she smells really bad very quickly. She also has problems with yeast infections in her ears. That's a pain because the vet won't simply just give us refills on the meds. She has to get seen, get a culture done, and it shows up yeast every.single.time. It's pretty expensive.

Finally, I simply want you to stop discussing me, stop degrading me to our friends and colleagues, stop telling people I “screwed you over” as you did to Maureen Wagner. Stop making false statements about my character, statements that you know in your heart are not true. I have three semesters of grad school left at Harvard. I have an amazing future before me. I will not tolerate you portraying me as a tramp, or likening me to one of the “Black welfare queens” in your videos. I have not spoken ill of you to our friends and colleagues. I have never discussed this matter with any reporters. I expect the same civility from you in return.
You used to be truly precious to me, but those affectionate feelings I once felt for you are long past now. The police have advised me a situation such as this constitutes FALSE IMPRISONMENT, a felony in New Jersey. Bringing a third party to the barn to prevent me from notifying the police of a crime, confusing and intimidating me so that you could keep me in the barn constitutes TAMPERING WITH A WITNESS, a felony in New Jersey.
James, if you do not stop these daily attacks on my character, and this ongoing harassment, I will notify your probation officer regarding the facts of this incident and file charges against you with the NJPD. My expectation is that you walk back these false statements and stop your childishness immediately.

That the boy's corpse was a John Doe in the morgue is even worse.
A friend's family member was shot (a case of mistaken identiy) by some scumbag a while back. He was in ICU and his mother (a R.N. from a different hospital, but knew the doctor) was there and asked the doctor about his chart. The doctor proceeded to tell her it was the "same story with all these gang-bangers".
She proceeded to tell the doctor that her son was a C.P.A. witha family and a member of the church.

It's a mess.
The U.S. Office of Management and Budget currently defines "Hispanic or Latino" as "a person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race".[33] This definition excludes people of Portuguese origins, such as Portuguese Americans or Brazilian Americans. However, they are included in some government agencies' definitions. For example, the U.S. Department of Transportation defines Hispanic to include, "persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Central or South American, or others Spanish or Portuguese culture or origin, regardless of race."[34] This definition has been adopted by the Small Business Administration as well as many federal, state, and municipal agencies for the purposes of awarding government contracts to minority owned businesses. In addition, both the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Conference include representatives of both Spanish and Portuguese descent. Still, other government agencies adopt definitions that exclude people from Spain, since there is a distinct ethnic difference (indigenous American or European American). Some others include people from Brazil, but not Spain or Portugal. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission encourages any individual who believes that he or she is Hispanic to self-identify as Hispanic.[35] The United States Department of Labor - Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs encourages the same self-identification.[36] As a result, any individual who traces his or her origins to part of the Spanish Empire or Portuguese Empire may self-identify as Hispanic, because an employer may not override an individual's self-identification.[37]

re: #443 Obdicut
They probably mean something like "brown":
In the United States, some Hispanic Americans, mainly mestizos, are referred to by some as "brown people", even though the traditional term for mestizos have used for themselves, dating from the 1920s, is the bronze race. There is a strong division over this, however. At opposite ends of the spectrum are those that take pride in calling themselves "brown", and those who assert that there is no such scientific classification and totally reject the idea. In the middle are those that assert that the combination of Amerindian and European heritage has led to a group of people who are, informally, "brown".[23][24]
Judith Ortiz Cofer notes that appellation varies according to geographical location, observing that in Puerto Rico she is considered to be a white person, but in the United States she is considered to be a "brown person."[25] This has often been the stereotype of White Anglo-American prejudices that Spanish-speakers within the U.S. are all of one specific color, i.e. dark skin, dark hair, and dark eyes, due to many past and present Latin American migrants being of mestizo, Amerindian, or other non-caucasian race.[26] Consequently, white Hispanics are often branded as non-white due to their cultural heritage being synonymized with brown race, as well as contrary instances where their heritage is questioned or disregarded because they "look white" or "act white," this is because the merits of blond and blue-eyed Nordic race were described to be superior that the Southern Europeans, who include Spaniards, and their white Latin American descendants were called to be inferior.[original research?] The U.S. Census Bureau officially designates "Hispanic" as relating to ethnicity independent from race yet census forms asking for race may list "Hispanic or Latino" as an entity separate from white, Native American, two or more races, etc. In addition, Spanish-language media in both Latin America and within the U.S. identifies "Hispanic" as pertaining to Hispanophone culture which includes different races, ethnicities, and ancestries.[27][28]
The 1960s in the United States saw the creation of "brown pride" movements such as the Chicano Movement and La Raza. However, currently most Hispanic Americans do not refer to themselves as "brown people"[citation needed], but as hyphenated Americans of a certain national origin.
Non-white people have limited media visibility. The U.S. Hispanic media was accused of overlooking the brown-skinned indigenous and mixed-race Hispanic and black Hispanic populations and overrepresentation of white, largely blond and blue-eyed/green-eyed Hispanic and Latino Americans through the telenovelas who resemble Scandinavians and other northern Europeans more than they resemble the typical white Hispanics mostly of Southern European descent.[29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37]

Gave the dog his semi-annual bath yesterday. Had to lift him into the tub in two loads. All surfaces and every towel in the bathroom were wet.
Our German Shepherd mix didn't resist being bathed, in that he didn't struggle, but he would step out of the tub, because there was water in the tub.
And you would put him back in, and then a bit later you would turn away, and the dog would step out again, because: water in the tub.
So you pick up the soapy sixty-pound animal and put him back in the tub...
It was a trial. Wolf mixes aren't as unstable as people tend to think, at least in my experience, but they don't have as much of 'you're the people, I will put up with your shit' mentality as pure-blooded dogs do. They tend to think of themselves as equal partners in things.

It was a trial. Wolf mixes aren't as unstable as people tend to think, at least in my experience, but they don't have as much of 'you're the people, I will put up with your shit' mentality as pure-blooded dogs do. They tend to think of themselves as equal partners in things.
I've bathed a pure-bred GSD and felt about the same. As long as the co-operate. . . .
I had to give a flea bath to a GSD. She put-up with it and sat there for 1/2 and hour with the stuff on her then got rinsed.
I think she felt so bad, she was just happy to have someone try to deal with it.
I have no doubt she KNEW that is what I was doing.

In international news Iran got caught in another terrorism attempt.
'Iran plotted terror attack on Israeli ship in Suez'
Iran plotted to carry out a terror attack on an Israeli ship as it passed through Egypt’s Suez Canal, a report in the Egyptian Al-Ahram weekly claimed on Friday.
According to the report, the Egyptian terror operatives received instructions and funds from Iranian handlers ahead of the planned attack.
Egyptian authorities made no official comment on the report by Saturday night.
The suspects allegedly planned to recruit a third member to their cell, and were supposed to receive 50 million Egyptian pounds to carry out the plan.
If confirmed, the plot could strain ties between Iran and Egypt, which is in the midst of a political transformation.

Thomas Merton is seriously getting me down.
The man actually blamed himself (his sins) for WWII. "sin created war --I had my part in it" type of thinking.
That is some serious guilt for someone NOT raised RC.

Cats get washed?
As I've said before, I actually find washing cats mentally refreshing. It requires full and focused attention. Anything less and there will be blood, your blood, lots of it. As a result it's ten to fifteen minutes of ignoring the world.
I have one cat that likes water, provided she picks when and how she enters it. It's that business of grabbing her and applying soap to which she objects. Loudly.

Hiring agents to carry out an attack on a ship? Yes. I believe they did the embassy attacks last month as well.
The jury is still out for me regarding what it would mean for them to have functioning nuclear weapons. My strongest instinct is that the mullahs do not actually want to launch Armageddon, but I remain concerned about who they might give what to.

Although it depends on the cat, I've never found it to be a particularly pleasant experience.
Someone told me to start when they are kittens and (like puppies) they will get used to it. I found that as kittens, the tolerance to baths is hard wired. It's either something with which they will cooperate or it is not and you might as well wear welding gloves and mask.

I had to wash my cats twice a week when I first got them from the shelter because one of them had ringworm. Now (nearly five years later) they get washed about every other month when the weather is warm. They both complain a little bit, and I do have to keep hold of them to keep them from grabbing my t-shirt with their claws to get out, but I'm convinced I will get one of them to purr in the bath eventually. It will be the one who loves to be brushed.

I think it's fairly instinctual. House cats are descended from wild desert cats. Being wet when the sun goes down on a desert is a poor idea. It gets cold out there.
Tigers, who are jungle-adapted, LOVE water. They have greasier coats and skins, and are evolved for a climate where the heat lingers after dark. They love to swim around.

I've had cats for decades - never given one a bath yet (except one stray I picked up that was really, really nasty. Drying her with a blow dryer was a memorable experience). I'm trying to figure out why anyone would need to give a cat a bath to begin with - except under some kind of extreme circumstance, even an outdoor cat.

How to wash a cat
Thoroughly clean the toilet.
Add the required amount of shampoo to the toilet water, and have both lids lifted.
Obtain the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.
In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids (you may need to stand on the lid so that he cannot escape). CAUTION: Do not get any part of your body too close to the edge, as his paws will be reaching out for any thing they can find.
Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a "power wash and rinse" which I have found to be quite effective.
Have someone open the door to the outside and ensure that there are no people between the toilet and the outside door.
Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids.
The now-clean cat will rocket out of the toilet, and run outside where he will dry himself.
Sincerely,
A DOG OWNER

Never had a problem with it until one time I cut too close and the nail bled. Dog cried. I freaked-out.
So, I started paying the vet $10 to do it. Now I have three dogs and can't afford it.
I have a dremel, it is easier and you can see better what you are doing.

When I was a student in Ireland, we learned that people would take British currency in Ireland, but never the other way around. A friend of mine tried to pay for something in London in Irish money and was told 'that's dirty money', very angrily.
New Israeli Shekels probably wouldn't have worked there, either.
