ABC News Posts ‘Enhanced’ Video of Zimmerman

Headline says ”Enhanced Video Shows Injury” but it’s far from settled
US News • Views: 24,920

ABC News has posted what they say is an “enhanced” version of the video showing George Zimmerman arriving at the Sanford Police Department, with the headline: George Zimmerman: Enhanced Video Shows Injury on Trayvon Martin Shooter’s Head.

Here’s their report; note that their outright statement that the video “shows injury” is based on one frame of the video, apparently the same frame picked out by the Daily Caller a few days ago. Also note that ABC does not say exactly how they “enhanced” this video, only that it was “re-digitized,” whatever that means.

Is this an injury as ABC now claims, or a reflection from the overhead lights? And why are they only showing one frame of this “enhanced” video to back up their claim? There are many other views of Zimmerman’s head that do not show any apparent injury.

These are reasons to be skeptical. It’s far from settled, and it’s irresponsible for ABC to present the story as if it is settled; it raises the possibility that they’re simply trying to stoke the controversy to keep their ratings up.

The story that Trayvon Martin was smashing Zimmerman’s head into the concrete sidewalk is ludicrous; if that had happened, Zimmerman would have gone to the hospital. All head injuries are potentially serious, and no EMT would simply let Zimmerman walk away without more extensive treatment if that had been the case; there are issues of liability for both the police and the EMTs in cases like that. Since he was examined only briefly before being cleared to leave, any injuries he suffered had to be very minor.

The real bottom line is that one person was left dead on the ground, and it wasn’t Zimmerman.

A more accurate term for this would be de-enhancement (re-encoding digitally compressed video removes detail). It's like squinting at the video.

Appears there is nothing that will quench the liberals thirst for blood.
Sad.

Hate crime? Probably not if Holder has anything to say about this...
And so much for Janet Napolitano's "white male" extremists BS rhetoric.
I can hear it now..... The statement from Obama and his administration.... "the suspect is just a poor disgruntled foreigner that was unjustly asked to renew his visa to attend classes at the University."
The United States is coming a part at the seams and the progressives are holding the seam ripper.

Obama’s war on Christians is escalating. Now Christians are being s hot openly.

The end result will be another liberal nut job when all is said and done. You liberal_fucks_just_rape_everything you touch!
Once the truth comes out, you all will fade to the darkness.....

And yet EVERY time this happens it always turns out to be liberal...
I guess that's why you point a finger at lawful gun owners, hoping to distract from the truth.

The shooter wasn't white, and had skittles.. He is to have a liberal parade in his honor.

This guy was a Californian immigrant liberal, hopefully he took more immigrants with him.

"A Korean at a Korean Trade School Shot_up Some Classmates due to being upset with ex-girlfriend"
This is the most factually correct headline.
But, because of Obama and the Obama press, they have to paint a picture of Christian violence at a "Christian School". This is a sick joke by the press and Obama and it will end in November when he is voted out.

3 researchok  Mon, Apr 2, 2012 1:13:35pm

You can choose to believe every word Zimmerman said. That doesn't justify him running down and killing Trayvon Martin.

At least not until Skittles are put on a deadly weapons list.

George Zimmerman didn't know they were Skittles in Trayvon Martin as opposed to a gun? Then he should have shot him in the ass as opposed to executing the kid.

6 allegro  Mon, Apr 2, 2012 1:17:15pm

Those supposed "wounds" aren't on the back of his head, they are on the top of his head. Wounds resulting from being down on the ground with his head being thrust into the sidewalk could not be in that location.

7 Vicious Babushka  Mon, Apr 2, 2012 1:19:17pm

If he had a gash that big on his head, there would have been a tsunami of blood.

8 Targetpractice  Mon, Apr 2, 2012 1:19:22pm

So he's got a severe head wound that requires no bandaging and bled so little that we can't see any dried blood on his clothing.

Yeah, I'd say ABC's trying to draw ratings.

9 EdDantes  Mon, Apr 2, 2012 1:19:49pm

Zimmerman is a vigilante regardless of his motivation. Head wounds, as the video purports to show, do not stop bleeding without sutures.

10 neilk  Mon, Apr 2, 2012 1:19:52pm

re: #6 allegro

They also look like they were inflicted days, not hours ago. But they are probably just shadows which have been "enhanced" to look like abrasions.

There's never been any point in scrutinizing low-quality surveillance camera video anyway, though. Police and EMT are meticulous record-keepers. There are records of Zimmerman's injuries, or there aren't. If there aren't, then there probably weren't any injuries.

If I were Zimmerman (a far-fetched assumption) I would want to be damn sure they took a picture of my injuries.

Any wounds on his head are irrelevant compared with the ballistics report that should indicate how far he was from Trayvon when he shot him. Of course, as the police decided that night that no crime had been committed, said evidence may not have been gathered.

12 Charles Johnson  Mon, Apr 2, 2012 1:20:20pm

Breitbart.com is trumpeting this one like crazy, claiming that it's a "high def" video.

No, it's not. You don't get high definition video out of a low res security camera, no matter how you "enhance" it.

13 lawhawk  Mon, Apr 2, 2012 1:20:29pm

So this enhancement appears to show something on Zimmerman's head. Is it the injury Zimmerman alleges to have been inflicted by Martin? A preexisting condition/injury/birthmark/bad haircut? Both are plausible.

The difference is that if it was a head laceration or abrasion caused by the Martin confrontation, there would be other evidence to corroborate it - blood on both Martin and Zimmerman (both on clothes and on their skin).

Blood on the skin doesn't go away easily, nor is it easy to remove from clothes.

And head wound bleed like a mofo. They wont simply stop bleeding and can require stitches to close.

Let's just say I'm not impressed with this particular video (and that they're having to single out a particular frame and not the entire video makes one wonder whether it's an artifact from lighting conditions and not the aforementioned situation).

Regardless - there's no way he suffered any serious injuries to his head. There are liability issues here, and if that had been the case, Zimmerman WOULD have gone to the hospital. No question about that. Any injuries he suffered had to be so minor that the EMTs on the scene didn't even think he had a possibility of concussion.

Especially if you listen to the shit that his lawyer and family have been putting out, such as his brother saying that GZ was one blow to the head away from being fed with a spoon. If he had suffered head injuries that severe, I doubt he'd have been conscious, let alone would have been cleared by EMTs to be taken straight from the crime scene to the police station for questioning.

Wasn't the 911 dispatcher's request for an ambulance cancelled by police/EMTs once they got on-scene?

re: #16 Charles Johnson

However, that's assuming that the PD is acting as a reasonable PD would under the same circumstances. If Sanford PD is as inept as portrayed, they might not have taken steps that would have been done by a reasonable PD in the same circumstances such as taking him to seek medical attention, taking photo evidence of Zimmerman's condition for probable cause consideration, etc.

30 Talking Point Detective  Mon, Apr 2, 2012 1:32:58pm

This really is all pretty absurd. As someone mentioned upthread, if he had severe injuries as he claimed (as per his father), then there should be police records, EMT records, etc. The video, or interpreting whether the one cop was inspecting his head, are more likely to reflect a confirmation bias than anything else.

Zimmerman's story is either corroborated by the existing evidence or it isn't. The video is pretty irrelevant, IMO.

This will be all much clearer once it is made public what why the lead investigator wanted to charge him with manslaughter.

31 lawhawk  Mon, Apr 2, 2012 1:35:05pm

re: #30 Talking Point Detective

And that assumes that the crucial evidence was collected in the first place. If the Sanford PD was treating this as SYG from the outset, evidence collection may have been far more limited than if we were talking about a standard criminal investigation (which is part of the reason why the law enforcement was so against this in the first place - it hampers law enforcement investigations).

What do we have? An apparent minor injury to the top-back portion of the head with no apparent bandaging, bleeding, nor requiring any hospitalization and/or observation. Was he injured prior to his confrontation with Trayvon or during the confrontation? Was it a result from a fall before or during the confrontation? Was it the result of a weapon such as a rock or a stick and if so are the police in possession of such a weapon? Could an injury like this be attained with the use of ones hands and if so was there any evidence of this in Trayvon medical examination?

It's not important anyway, in comparison...

RUSH:...I'm not expressing this right. I'm getting close. But I know exactly how you feel. I know your point. Here's People magazine, Trayvon Martin on the cover, and what does that matter given what's going on with the US military in Afghanistan and Iraq and our policy? What does that matter -- it's what you're saying -- and do the people read People even know what's going on? And if they don't, you're really bothered by it. I understand totally what you're saying. It's frustrating as hell, I know.

CALLER: It is. It is. And it's a damn shame.

RUSH: Yeah, it is. And this, by the way, is not to say that the Trayvon Martin story is in and of itself irrelevant. It's highly indicative of where we are culturally. And it stands to reason People magazine would go to town with it. For them it's a smart business decision. But nevertheless I understand how it affects you. You're wondering if the people who read that, buy that magazine, are they connected, are they engaged, do they have the slightest idea how they, too, are threatened by the problems facing the country? ...

[...]

[the next]CALLER: Hi, Rush. I can't believe I got through and talking to you. I've won the lottery. I don't need to go buy a ticket now. But, Rush, you were talking to that young lady with regard to Trayvon's picture on the front of People magazine. You were trying to describe what, you know, kind of your sense and her sense of indignation toward, you know, more attention being paid say to Trayvon versus our soldiers. And I'm wondering if what you were looking for was a prioritization, the ability of the American people to prioritarize our soldiers under fire versus, say, you know -- granted, a young boy being shot is very important of course. But, you know, we need to prioritize. I mean our Constitution is being shredded. Let's enumerate what is important in our day-to-day life rather than --

RUSH: Well, that's close. You know, that's helpful in helping me explain this.

CALLER: Okay.

RUSH: I don't read People, so I can't give you any examples out of that other than the one that was cited. But as I read sports blogs, sports websites, sports stories, I wonder, okay, does this reporter know what's going on outside this? Does this reporter know that his freedom's at stake here? I just wonder if they're detached. His priority, these people are sports reporters, that's what they talk about, that's what they write about, and they don't want to mix politics, and I understand that. I'm wondering what's in their heads. I'm wondering if they're in the game. I'm wondering if they know what's going on or if they're just totally detached in their little world of sports and have no clue because my point is they could be helpful.

CALLER: Right.

RUSH: They would help influence people. If somebody that some kid idolizes, some athlete also knew how to talk about constitutional freedom, also knew how to talk about what's wrong with health care, it would help.

CALLER: Right.

RUSH: It would help defeat this. Now, People, I don't expect People to do stories on the military unless it's a story about how the government mistreats 'em.

CALLER: Right.

RUSH: People is TIME Magazine. It's a pop culture celebrity thing, and the Trayvon Martin story is made to order for People. It's Duke lacrosse. That picture that they put on the cover is three years old. It's an angelic picture. It's not who the boy was when he was killed. There's nothing in the story that justifies the kid being killed that we know so far. I don't mean that, but I'm not at all surprised that People and the people that work there are not even interested in doing a story on the US military and the trials and tribulations.

True. The claims that SYG isn't relevant are ridiculous. The cops and prosecutor said that further investigation wasn't done because of SYG. Whether or not someone wants to (arbitrarily, by wishful thinking apologists for the law) say that shouldn't be at issue here doesn't change the justification given for the level of investigation that was conducted and the reason for not pressing charges.

Still, there was one week's worth of investigation. I would imagine that the cops must have notes on his injuries, and that the EMTs must also. Outside of such evidence, everything else is basically speculation. Of course, the cops and/or EMTs could fabricate reports, lie, fail to take proper notes, etc. - but that evidence, or lack thereof, should be the starting point.

44 Gus  Mon, Apr 2, 2012 1:42:51pm

He wants to talk about Trayvon, but without losing the remainder of his advertisers.

That last one was from Thursday. This one is from today:

RUSH: We've got the NBC edited version of the George Zimmerman 911 call . This is typical. I was being facetious when I opened the program and said I can't believe NBC would doctor a tape. I can definitely believe NBC would doctor a tape. In fact, I expect NBC, after their investigation, to stand by this thing. You know what they're gonna say? Well, Zimmerman said it. They didn't put anything in that Zimmerman didn't say. They just left out a bunch of stuff he did say, and they left out a question he was asked. But they'll say he said it. Race is a template in the media. Have you seen the statistics, by the way? When blacks are murdered the vast majority of the murderers are black, that black-on-black crime is just off the charts, that the number of blacks murdered by whites is way down. (interruption) Well, what do you mean I'm not supposed to say that? Yes, there is, and the civil rights coalition acknowledges it, and they don't care because there's no racial component.

Remember, this is the race business. It doesn't matter if the percentages are 1% of black people murdered are murdered by whites, that's enough to propel the race industry, and they're gonna focus on it, race, race, race. The fact that the majority of blacks are killed by other blacks. Okay, fine. Let's leave it out there, it doesn't matter. It's not relevant to what we're talking about, they say. All you need is that one example. And so you've got somebody steeped in media traditions at NBC, and that template is almost branded in their brain. It's almost embellished. And so if they're reading a transcript and they see that they can assemble the various elements of the conversation in a way that confirms what they believe going in, they'll do it. And they think they're performing a service.

They don't think they've doctored anything. They think they're helping everybody understand what's really going on here, what really happened, and they're cutting away all of the irrelevant fat from the story, getting right to the meat and potatoes. That's what this guy thinks he's doing. There may be an element of somebody knowingly falsifying this and trying to get away with it. My point to you is that this is so delved in their brains that they don't think there's anything wrong with doctoring the tape. Remember, getting to the truth as they see it and as it's been explained to them and as they've been taught is all that matters. Anyway, we'll play the two segments the tape to show you what happened, let you hear it.

Yep, I have the article here.

Before he broke Major League Baseball's race barrier in 1947, Robinson played for a Dodgers farm team in Sanford—but only briefly. His presence in spring training that year so incensed white residents that they accosted the mayor and demanded Robinson's ouster. When the integrated team was physically prevented from taking the field, the Dodgers' owner moved Robinson out of town for his own good. "The Robinsons were run out of Sanford, Florida, with threats of violence," Robinson's daughter would later say.

There is other evil shit in there. Read the whole article.

No idea. But anyone who's ever seen a boxing match or UFC knows that the smallest cuts to the scalp or head bleed like a motherfucker.

Nobody who was supposedly slammed into the concrete and who has a head injury that's supposed to be that large and noticeable would be walking upright of their own volition less than an hour later. They'd be in the ER getting stitches and undergoing a variety of tests to make sure they don't have a concussion or some other traumatic injury.

Don't know, but I'm willing to bet that before the week's over, we'll be told the gunman's either A) a raging liberal or B) a lone nut. And that, regardless of which it is, that it's yet another example of why everybody should be armed.

63 goddamnedfrank  Mon, Apr 2, 2012 1:57:33pm

It's frustrating when people don't publish their methods and histories on this kind of work. I think ABC went in with some variant of Smart Sharpen, then made a selection of the back of Zimmerman's head and used Color Balance limited to Shadows to enhance the red channel, or openly painted them in color blending mode.

I'm not seeing a way to get those specific tonal relationships without making a selection, and if that's the case it's a pretty big no no. Enhancing the edges to see the marks on the back of Zimmerman's head is fine, but manipulating them so that they tint red without applying that same color setting to the image globally becomes illustration, as opposed to simply exposing the pre-existing information - which is ostensibly the entire purpose of this exercise.

Is that so?

Robert Eagar, leader of Georgia Tech’s chapter of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus (SCC), believes that people should have the right to protect themselves at all times.

“Individuals should have the same right to protect themselves on campus as they do off campus,” Eagar said in an article published in the Atlanta Journal Constitution on Feb. 16.

Students for Concealed Carry has many chapters located on university campuses across the country all with the aim to raise awareness for bills like HB 981.

Seventeen colleges in Georgia alone house chapters of the organization.

Georgia is just the first example I found.

It's too high on the head to have occurred from getting his head slammed on a sidewalk. Also, a wound that size would have been bandaged by the EMT, before being taken to the hospital for cleaning and stitches then re-bandaged before going to the police station. It's either from an old scar or a total fabrication.

Somewhere I thought I read that he had been "cleaned-up" by the EMT's so any wounds from the incident would have been bandaged. I would think they would show-up on the camera footage --unless EMT's are now using clear or skin-colored bandages that magically match everyone's skin tone.

Dermabond was brought forth on other boards as a suggestion for why there's no bandages, but googling up "EMT Dermabond" showed that they don't use it here in the US, as you have to be trained to recognize which wounds it works for and which it doesn't.

Besides that, even if it was a clear bandage, the skin around the "wound" does not look red enough or inflamed enough to recognize as a fresh wound. Especially if this wound was from repeated contact with an abrasive surface, i.e. concrete.

Another hole in the "enhancement." Somebody on Something Awful makes this point:

Again, the "damning" shot of the head injury, is so high-quality, that it also reveals that the officer with a notepad has lost his right eye and most of his right ear, appears to have suffered severe burns, and is cel-shaded.

It also reveals, on Zimmerman, the red "neck halo" you can see just off the collar of his jacket. The NRA has stated that the neck halo only happens after a just killing by CCW permit holder.
