Rick Santorum’s last hurrah
Politics • Views: 22,973

Rick Santorum is giving another seemingly interminable concession speech, so here’s an open thread to discuss the Mitt Romney juggernaut.

Santorum’s family looks awfully sad on that stage behind him, but they should look on the bright side. Now he has more time to work on getting creationism into science classes.

That became obvious awhile back. But with Paul and Newt still holding on in hopes of forcing a brokered convention, I'm not sure if Santorum will drop out now.

Jon Stewart Jokes About Romney’s Tepid Endorsements

Mitt Romney has lined up a handsome collection of Republican endorsements. But Jon Stewart on Monday couldn’t help noticing: they’re not all that enthusiastic. “Romney’s gonna be the nominee, everybody’s decided. What they haven’t really decided is why,” he said.

He can't admit it yet because the wingnuts can't accept it yet.

As soon as Santorum drops out, Mittens is the winner. Much wailing and gnashing of teeth will follow.

IIRC, Newt spoke rather harshly of the Ryan Budget last year, but that was before he threw his hat into the presidential race.

Juggernaut? Mitt Romney's campaign is hardly a a Juggernaut. its more like a car with three wheels that is constantly shifting between drive and reverse, but it is still doing the best because the other cars are completely broken down.

re: #6 Charles Johnson

Santorum knows he's toast, but he's not yet ready to admit it.

He's playing for 2016 at this point, sees that the most important thing in the GOP nominating process is being perceived as next in line. This strategy has the intended bonus effect of weakening Romney's brand going into the general. Even though he is becoming perceived as being motivated mostly by spite there's still little long term downside for him, since the social conservatives that are supporting him hate Mitt with an equal if not greater passion.

The Romney campaign has been a "juggernaut" in only one respect: It has enough money to bomb its opponents out of existence. He's outspent those he's run against, but most of his "wins" have been hard fought for even then.

Even then, there's been rumor of donor fatigue starting to set in, that most of those bankrolling his campaign expected this to be a quick fight and now are afraid that they'll max out their donation limits before he can even get to the convention.

For the sake of convienience, Social Darwinism:

Social Darwinism is a term commonly used for theories of society that emerged in England and the United States in the 1870s, seeking to apply the principles of Darwinian evolution to sociology and politics.[1] It especially refers to notions of struggle for existence being used to justify social policies which make no distinction between those able to support themselves and those unable to support themselves. The most prominent form of such views stressed competition between individuals in laissez-faire capitalism; but it is also connected to the ideas of eugenics, scientific racism, imperialism,[2] fascism, Nazism and struggle between national or racial groups.[3][4]

35 Mich-again  Tue, Apr 3, 2012 6:53:09pm

Romney's on record saying GM and Chrysler should have gone through bankruptcy without government involvement, which is to say they should have been liquidated. And with that particularly stupid view, He forfeited the rust belt States which means he won't win the WH. Oh he'll try to change what he said, but he's damaged goods around here.

36 Robert O.  Tue, Apr 3, 2012 6:53:56pm

The question is who will Romney choose as his running mate?

I am not sure he will pick an economic conservative (Ryan, Christie, Rubio) because he already has a big problem reassuring the vagina-politics crowd. They won't vote for Obama, but even a few of them staying home will cost him badly needed votes. After all that has happened in the primaries, Santorum or Perry are out of question. Palin has no chance either. A resurrection of Huckabee?

He's tried to rewrite history, saying that he felt that they should have gone through "normal" bankruptcy proceedings, ignoring the very real fact at the time that nobody was willing to front that sort of cash as the economy was crashing and the credit crunch had kneed even the most rock-solid companies in the groin. If the government hadn't stepped in, we'd have seen the liquidation of the Big Three, as Ford would have been in bankruptcy once GM and Chrysler had gone under.

re: #31 The Ghost of a Flea

Sounds a bit like the policies that caused and exacerbated the Irish potato famine, though that happened a couple of decades before "social Darwinism" was coined.

Hm...not speaking with the weight of research and citation, but:

In a lot of ways Social Darwinism was just a re-styling of ideas already present, but given a "scientific" sheen by being affiliated with Darwin. The conclusions drawn ignored large chunks of Darwins' work--in particular his ideas about the benefit of social cooperation--and some versions were downright Lamarckian in their assertion that "the poors would breed people destined to be poor because heredity." Really, it was just waving out the word "evolution" as an excuse for the existing status quo in social status and economics. The other thing is that "Social Darwinism"--call it Malthusian or Spencerian thinking, or whathaveyou--was a fantastic post hoc reasoning for why an event was not only inevitable, but that passivity was not only an acceptable response to ugly and lethal tragedies, but that inaction was the morally right response.

I don't know enough about the Potato Famine to venture much beyond the fact that the British did similar things in India: keep a colonial exporting foodstuffs even as the local population starved.

US Senate candidate and former sportscaster Craig James will be interviewed on the Todd Klein show on Lubbock's KRFE radio tomorrow. Big deal, you might say.
It just happens though that it was Craig's son Adam who was involved in the incident that led to the firing of popular football coash Mike Leach a couple of years ago. James complained that Leach denied his son medical treatment and had him shut in a small dark room after the younger James sustained a head injury during practice. The university investigated and Leach was given the boot from his $2M a year job. Leach has many, many rabid admirers in these parts, and many of them blame James for the coach's downfall. Only Judas Iscariot is more vilified in Lubbock, and he's dead.
Comments on Todd's Facebook page.

Break out the slime cleaner! Don't get to close to him Todd. That slime he has to sell doesn't come off your clothes. Will he be delivered by garbage truck? He's a Perry flunky. James & Perry were conspiring to get Coach Leach fired because Coach Leach teams beat A&M regularly.

He was pushing creatine on the kids and telling them they needed to take it every day, he was dressing assistant coaches in pads to hit kids in drills, having year round practices with the whole team before and after school, and quite a few more. It really blew up when a pregame speech featured him referring to the other team from Detroit as a bunch of backyard N--ers from Detroit. The kiss between Kirk and Uhura became famous, as it was the first kiss between an African-American and a Caucasian portraying fictional characters on American "episodic" television. The scene was seen as groundbreaking, even though the kiss was portrayed as having been forced by alien mind control.
According to her 1994 autobiography Beyond Uhura, the scene was, at the behest of NBC executives worried that Southern affiliates might refuse to air the episode, filmed with and without the kiss, but Nichols and Shatner consciously sabotaged the non-kiss takes so that there would be no choice but to leave the kiss in the final version."

There is a similar but less serious claim about former Tech AD Gerald Myers, who actually fired Leach. Myers is well known for his somewhat sour disposition and demeanor: "The only time Coach Myers ever smiled was when he ran over a puppy on the way to work."

(Myers is 75 and a hard-shell Baptist to boot so he has precious little reason to smile in any case.)

They have a presidential candidate that nobody in their party really wants, their big issue (the economy) is slipping from them with each passing month, they've pissed off virtually every voting bloc except the old white male bloc, and they're reduced to hoping that shit gets bad (economy tanks or ACA overturned) just to have something to run on.

Is Romney is doomed?:

Romney fields hostile question on Mormonism

A Green Bay voter confronted Mitt Romney over his religion at a town hall Monday, the day before Wisconsin's primary. Romney is a life long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose members are commonly called Mormons.

"I guess my question is, do you believe it's a sin for a white man to marry and procreate with a black?" asked Bret Hatch, a 28-year old Ron Paul supporter from Green Bay.

[...]

Speaking with reporters after the event, Hatch, the questioner, said he believed his question was relevant considering the general election race against President Barack Obama.

"Either he believes the Book of Mormon or he doesn't," Hatch said. "I think that's an important issue. He's going up against a black guy! He's going against Obama. This is a racial issue."

The LDS Church has a troubled history on racial issues, and in 1978 lifted a ban on blacks serving in the priesthood.

Romney's father, former Michigan Gov. George Romney, publicly disagreed with his church over its record on civil rights.

Mormonism is more a rock around his neck than a boost to his career, I think. There are some non-Mormons out there who might like the fact that Romney is a religious man, but Mormonism has baggage.

From commenter Rael1964 on RawStory, responding to the guy Soledad O'Brien interviewed:

(Brief background, this guy claims that there were eight recent burglaries in the area Trayvon Martin was shot in, perpetrated by 'young black males'. Unfortunately, what no one can figure out is how that detail is known, seeing as there were arrests in only one of these cases.)

Encyclopedia Brown in The Case of the Republican Reprobate Racists

CASE: The Sanford Skinheads are about to play the Lefty Libs, but the umpire can't make it to the game due to car trouble. One of the Libs' parents, a computer salesman, volunteers to ump the game after declaring he was an umpire in the majors for three years. He immediately begins to make unfavorable calls towards the Skinheads (it is always implied that the children of Sanford learn their racist ways through their parents). When the ump dusts off the plate, some of the parents start hurling insults. When Encyclopedia reads the back of the ump's shirt with the message, "Don't go wrong when you buy a Krumm computer," that he realizes the ump is a fraud. At that point, George Zimmerman guns down an unarmed "young black male" for daring to possess a bag of Skittles in his neighbor-hood.

SOLUTION: If you thought there was something to do with computers here, well, that's exactly what you are supposed to think. Encyclopedia's "proof": umpires are trained to face the crowd when they dust off the plate in the majors, where it's considered bad manners to show your back to the crowd. But in Sanford, it's acceptable to gun down "young black males" in cold blood. Furthermore, Zimmerman's racist friend Frank "Pull My" Taaffee claims that no less than EIGHT burglaries were committed by "young black males," yet he also claims that only one was apprehended. How did he know they all were black if seven of them were never apprehended?

The best explanation I've ever encountered for this phenomenon is from the blog slacktivist. The author explains in one of his Left Behind pages that Real, True Christians--his term for the wingnutty, politicized Christians that listen to people like Fischer--seem to imagine that all other religions are just flimsy shells of Not-Christianity with no differentiable parts. As such non-RTCs are all either (1) completely naive dupes that haven't encountered the blazing truth of Real, True, Christian or (2) are apostates clinging to a false ideology because of their hate of Real, True, Christianity.
