Poll: Romney Opens Wide Lead in Santorum’s Home State

Get used to saying “Romney the nominee”
Politics • Views: 28,700

The latest polling in Pennsylvania, Rick Santorum’s home state, shows that Republican voters are now entering the “acceptance” stage, and are getting ready to bite the bullet and vote for Mitt Romney: Romney Takes the Lead in Pennsylvania.

Mitt Romney’s taken the lead in PPP’s newest poll of Rick Santorum’s home state of Pennsylvania. Romney has 42% to 37% for Santorum with Ron Paul at 9% and Newt Gingrich at 6%. The numbers represent a dramatic turnaround from when PPP polled the state a month ago. Romney’s gained 17 points, going from 25% to 42%. Meanwhile Santorum’s dropped 6 points from 43% to 37%, for an overall swing of 23 points in the last four weeks.

Pennsylvania Republicans are expressing major doubts about Santorum’s viability both in the primary and the general election. Only 36% of GOP voters think Santorum has a realistic chance at the nomination to 54% who believe he does not. And when it comes to matching up against Barack Obama in the fall only 24% of Republicans think Santorum would provide their best chance for a victory while 49% think that designation belongs to Romney.

Remember that in 2006 during his Pennsylvania campaign for Senator, Rick Santorum lost to Democrat Bob Casey by the largest margin for an incumbent since 1980 — and the voters of Pennsylvania are getting ready to reject him again.

But as long as Santorum has a good showing in Texas...or maybe all the southern states in May...or maybe he'll just hold his breath and stomp his feet.

I don't know why I'm supposed to be surprised by Santorum getting the shit kicked out of him in a statewide Pennsylvania vote. Pretty sure I've seen this film before.

Santorum's not in this anymore to win it, I doubt he's even in it anymore in the hopes that he can force a brokered convention. No, now he's just in it to lay the groundwork for his own run as the "inevitable" candidate in '16.

But the groundwork has already been laid. He's the last real candidate. Nobody else is left. And even if they were, Huntsman staying on the trail in 2008 did nothing to prevent Romney from taking it easily in 2012.

(I have no idea how Huntsman would actually be doing in this race.)

I'll be glad if it wasn't terrorism, but the downside is the vitriol against Muslims if it turns out either the daughter or husband were in on it.

The Clown Car is about to blow the last tire. Them Mitt will just have to decide who wants to go down with him in flames come November. Sepuku for everyone!

10 lawhawk  Thu, Apr 5, 2012 12:14:58pm

Santorum can't and wont win in his home state. What kind of chances would he have nationally. Heck, I don't think he'd do well in 2016 with the way he's going to lose PA. It isn't going to be close - and the GOP will see that as a fatal weakness inhibiting his 2016 chances though he's likely to pick up the South (which can be a strategy to win the nomination, but not the general election).

Heck, Gingrich managed to win his original home state (GA), but not his current home (VA - where he couldn't even manage to get on the ballot). In GA, Santorum finished behind Mitt, which tells you that he wasn't preferred even there.

The narrative's already being written as to why Santorum "would have won" this year, with the running theme being that he "would have won" had it not been for Newt and Crazy Uncle Ron. And I can somewhat see it, as you probably could have erased several of Mitt's wins had you combined Santorum and Gingrich's votes together. But there's no guarantee that Newt and Ron's supporters wouldn't have gone to Mitt or just thrown up their hands and gone home.

Egypt: Brotherhood presidency candidate says Shariah 'final goal'

Khairat el-Shater met for four hours Tuesday night with a panel of Salafi scholars and clerics, called the Jurisprudence Commission for Rights and Reform, trying to win their support.

The discussion focused on "the shape of the state and the implementation of Shariah," the commission said on its Facebook page Wednesday.

"El-Shater stressed that Shariah is his top and final goal and that he would work on forming a group of religious scholars to help parliament achieve this goal," the statement read. The commission is an umbrella group of Islamist factions, mostly Salafis, set up after last year's anti-Mubarak uprising.

The promise resembled an item in a 2007 political platform by the Brotherhood, when it was still a banned opposition movement. It called for parliament to consult with a body of clerics on legislation to ensure it aligns with Shariah.

Well...this isn't going to go well.

It's a fact of life. We're all busy dying.

Today marks the passing of one of the giants in the car industry. Ferdinand Porsche died at the age of 76. The Porsche 911 was his brain child.

[Link: www.bloomberg.com...]

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the designer of the original version of the iconic 911 sportscar, died today in Salzburg, Austria. He was 76.

“As creator of the Porsche 911, he established a design culture that molds our sportscars still today,” Matthias Mueller, chief executive officer of Porsche AG, said in an e- mailed statement. “His philosophy of good design is for us a legacy that we will also honor in the future.”

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, who created the original Volkswagen (VOW3) Beetle, designed the first 911 in 1962. He went on to develop racecars for the German automaker until leaving the Stuttgart-based company in 1972 with other family members when Porsche was transformed into a joint stock company.

The 911 remains the epitome of the Porsche brand, even as the carmaker, which is jointly owned by the Porsche SE holding company and Volkswagen AG (VOW3), expands beyond sports cars. The Cayenne sport-utility vehicle was the brand’s top seller last year, with triple the deliveries of the 911. The Macan, a compact SUV, is scheduled to start production next year.

Porsche unveiled the seventh generation of the $82,100 911 in September. The 350-horsepower sportscar has a top speed of 289 kilometers per hour (179 miles per hour) and surges to 100 kilometers in 4.6 seconds.

Porsche Design

“He was a very special man, and the company Porsche was his life and what he stood for,” said Guenther Molter, who co- authored his father Ferry Porsche's autobiography. “He carried on the work of his father in his own way. He realized the Porsche 911, which was his idea.”

After leaving Porsche, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche founded the Porsche Design Studio, where he devoted himself to developing watches, eyeglasses, writing utensils and other design projects. He was a proponent of clear, austere lines.

His credo was “design must be functional and the functionality must be visually implemented without gags that need to be explained,” according to the Porsche statement.

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche will be interred among close family members at a ceremony at Zell am See in Austria. A public ceremony will take place at a later date, Porsche said.

If the wall is poorly insulated and it's been cold where you are, then a bag against the wall could get quite cold and with poor air circulation would condense inside moisture between the bag and the wall.

The Dog Whistle Has Sounded: How the Right Talks About ‘Thugs’ Like Trayvon Martin

In the realm of Limbaughean physics, racism is something generated by race hustlers. These rabble rousers alter the dynamic of natural social interactions by injecting wacky racism particles into a totally innocuous discussion about the natural laziness of young black people who just want to own guns and steal buckets of Popeye's fried chicken. A noble white truth teller merely means to pull back the curtain on the inequities demanded by an indolent black class, and when he's called racist, it's someone else's fault for noticing it. People then victimize that noble soul for telling a hard truth, like Jesus.

In any physical exchange, this reversal of causation or responsibility would inspire laughter and contempt. If, to take a random example, some radio-show-hosting triple-chinned drug-addicted serial-divorcé and bloviator stabbed you repeatedly in the stomach, and you complained that you had "lots of knife-holes" in you, nobody could reasonably claim that you were a "stabbing hustler" who was "condemning mere knife enthusiasts" in a cynical ploy to" gain sympathy via stabbism." But this is the state of right-wing racism in America: it exists only on its moment of detection. Until then, it's merely an amorphous cloud of words. The people who are targeted by it are the real racists, because they have the insufferable gall to notice it and then divisively, unrepentantly point it out. They are malcontents operating without the privilege to speak freely.

Does anyone else think RMoney will choose a female to run with him on the ticket?
I know it sounds a bit crazy because of McCain/Grifter but with all this anti-women stuff coming from the right, he might use it as part of his Etch-A-Sketch plan to say, see women, I told you we on the right love you.
I wouldn't have thought so before their war on women, but they are losing the women vote quickly.

The cost per hour of service is rather high, however.

I'm thinking it will balance out over time. I've had allergy problems the last few years, its affecting me worse than the wife and kids, so I'm hoping once this problem gets cleared up, I'll still get some use out of it.

She already said she wouldn't accept. She knows the fact that she failed to deliver South Carolina in the primary means Mitt won't pick her...and SC will go to the GOP anyway. He'll pick someone from Ohio or Florida so he can leverage their local draw in the general.

Can't really think of many women who could brought on the ticket that wouldn't weigh him down further. Palin's inadequacies as a candidate are a matter of public record. Haley's approval ratings have crashed through the floor and begun tunneling to China. Brewer on the ticket would shine a light on all the scary shit coming out of Arizona. And I can't really think of many other prominent women Republicans.

To be fair, I think most people reacted to McCain's VP pick by thinking "Who's Sarah Palin?", so prominent apparently isn't required.

I'd heard her floated at the time, but as a "out of left field" kinda way, in the same vein as Lieberman, described as a "young up-and-comer."

It was funny...McCain was asked the other day who Romney should pick, and he said, "Sarah Palin" and then laughed. It was the first time McCain acknowledged that his VP pick was a joke in more ways than one.

Wisconsin Recall Candidates Include Six Fake Democrats, Planted By GOP

Six fake Democrats are running in the upcoming Wisconsin recall elections, openly planted by the state Republican Party to force primary elections.

The candidates will be running for governor, lieutenant governor and four state senate seats in districts where Democrats gathered enough petition signatures to trigger recall elections.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, Republican Party spokesman Ben Sparks said that "running what he called 'recall protest candidates' guarantees a clear primary date and ensures no Republicans will face a general election that day [in May], when Democrats likely will turn out in huge numbers to select a gubernatorial challenger."

I wouldn't have thought so before their war on women, but they are losing the women vote quickly.

The GOP isn't just losing women, and among that group the greatest losses are women under 50. I see few, if any female GOP VP candidates that will appeal strongly to this group. The other problem is that every bit of distance the Romney campaign tries to place between themselves and the overwhelmingly GOP backed ultrasound laws will lower the enthusiasm at their base.

Romney also has a long, established history of interfering in women's health decisions, that go back to his bizarre attempt to overrule the decision of a senior LDS official when he was a bishop:

The woman was told by doctors that treatment of the clot would threaten the pregnancy, and so an abortion was necessary. The Mormon faith officially opposes abortion except in extreme cases, and women who are members of the church and seek an abortion are required to petition church elders for permission. She and her husband petitioned the Church to authorize them to receive the procedure, and a church elder told her and her husband that the procedure looked like unfortunate but unavoidable.

On the day of the abortion, the couple showed up at the hospital only to be greeted by their bishop, who had shown up, unannounced, to try to prevent her from going through with it, regardless of the fact that a church official with a higher rank than his had already given the okay. The bishop was determined to make his case against the life-saving surgery, and he was a total dick about it. According to a 2007 interview with Dushku, the following exchange occurred,

He said – What do you think you're doing?

She said – Well, we have to abort the baby because I have these blood clots.

And he said something to the effect of – Well, why do you get off easy when other women have their babies?

And she said – What are you talking about? This is a life threatening situation.

And he said – Well what about the life of the baby?

And she said – I have four other children and I think it would be really irresponsible to continue the pregnancy.

The bishop who tried to block that selfish, selfish clotted up woman from saving her own life with a legal medical procedure was one Mitt Romney. The woman he attempted to block did go through with her abortion and lived to see her four teenage children grow up. Her family later left the church.

Romney's Etch-a-Sketch powers won't be able to rewrite history or the anti choice planks in the GOP party platform. No matter who he nominates he's going to have very little room to maneuver on this issue.

She hasn't always been a Republican, so her conservative cred may not be so good. She's another half-governor, and a district atty. before that, so her experience isn't great. Hispanics and women don't necessarily like her because one of her big issues is to take drivers' licenses away from illegal immigrants, and she's anti-choice. And she only has one 'n' in her first name. :)

I don't know how she's polling right now, though.

re: #97 Obdicut

Does he confirm or deny the story?

Don't know, but there's some fairly strong third party corroboration:

Now the woman has come forward, identifying herself in Mr. Scott’s book as Carrel Hilton Sheldon. (Through Ms. Dushku, she declined to be interviewed.) “Mitt has many, many winning qualities,” she is quoted as saying, “but at the time he was blind to me as a human being.”

Ms. Dushku sees hypocrisy and callousness; Mr. Scott sees inexperience.

“I don’t think he’s an evil, unfeeling, uncaring kind of guy,” Mr. Scott said. “He was a brand new bishop, he was pretty young to begin with, my sense is he was pretty full of himself, and he thought that he would not fulfill his obligation as bishop if he didn’t press the matter.”

But if Mr. Romney was blind in that instance, his time as an ecclesiastical leader may have also opened his eyes. Having been raised in wealth and privilege, he was now exposed to hardship and human suffering, especially among Boston’s immigrant populations. “I had no idea people lived this way,” Mr. Barlow recalls him saying.

Here's an earlier snippet that explains who Mr. Scott is:

Ron Scott, a journalist and Mormon who has written a forthcoming biography of Mr. Romney, remembered how, when he moved to Boston, Mr. Romney asked him to run public affairs for the church — and then proceeded to tell him precisely how to do the job. “He had more of an imperious approach,” Mr. Scott said. “He wanted to direct everything.”

103 labman57  Thu, Apr 5, 2012 6:02:49pm

Curious. A number of social conservative politicians have publicly declared that their political aspirations are the result of "speaking with God", some even going so far as to insist that their election campaigns were "God's will".
Santorum, Bachmann, Cain, Perry, Gingrich, Palin -- all have cited divine intervention as a primary motivator in their quest for higher office, including the current battle for the presidency.

And yet each has had his/her campaign for the 2012 GOP nominee either never materialize, quickly crash and burn, or in the case of Santorum and Gingrich, gradually founder.

So what insights can we glean from this turn of events? Perhaps God is an Ashton Kutcher fan, as He appears to have punk'd each of these POTUS wannabes.
