Breaking: Santorum Holding News Conference (To Bail Out?)

Announcement time
Politics • Views: 35,616

Rick Santorum is holding a news conference in a few minutes (2 pm ET), and the chatter from the chattering classes is that he’s about to announce the “suspension” of his presidential campaign.

Santorum’s daughter is reported to be very sick again, and was taken to the hospital again last weekend; that may be the reason.

This 'suspension' bullshit is irritating. When did we need to start using weasel words for such simple and straightforward concepts? Was it about the time that we started announcing that we were going to announce that we were going to seek the presidency?

I think one of the GOP candidates (I'm thinking Newt, but could be wrong) actually did call a press conference to announce that he was going to make an announcement to run. Or maybe it was Mittens, I don't remember.

That leaves two more to bail out and victory is ours!

Does "suspending" the campaign, rather than officially "dropping out", have something to do with the ability to keep the delegates one has gained, and to perhaps remain on the ballot?

I think it has to do with the money your campaign raised, actually.

He can't continue to seek funds if he ends his campaign, I believe.

Suspending it allows him to continue to fundraise.

10 RadicalModerate  Tue, Apr 10, 2012 11:07:22am

I understand the reasoning for it - both for fundraising purposes (if a candidate says they are ending vs suspending campaign, different election rules kick in) as well as for the fact that it doesn't remove the candidate from state ballots, in case something happens with the current front-runner. So, I don't fault Santorum for this.

Family has to come first, and he's got to deal with the heartbreaking situation of his daughter's ongoing illness. The Santorum family is going to be facing some real tough days ahead with his daughter's situation.

Suspending the campaign allows for ongoing fundraising; quitting means that they can't. There's also the semantics of using suspending versus quitting. Suspending means that someone could potentially rejoin the race, though that really doesn't happen.

re: #7 Bulworth

As has previously been said "suspending" the campaign will still allow them to continue to receive/process campaign contributions. Also it will allow campaign funds to be spent to pay off any accrued debts while allowing any leftover balance to be spent however the candidate might wish.

The delegates he has won so far are still technically pledged to Santorum since he has not "quit" the race, however if he does indeed "Concede" to Romney then his delegates are free to support whomever they wish, if he were to "endorse" Romney however then supposedly his delegates are bound to support Romney.

This is something that Santorum's daughter has been and will be dealing with for the rest of her life (may it be a long and not-unpleasant one). It's not some sort of unforeseen circumstance that throws things up in a tizzy. I think concentration on Santorum's dropping out of the race should not be conflated with concentration on his daughter's health problems; I think any link is likely to be a straw-breaking-camel's-back situation, at most.

44 wrenchghaziwenchghazi  Tue, Apr 10, 2012 11:28:18am

When Santorum decided to run, what was he thinking as far as his sick daughter is concerned? I guess he really never expected to get this far. I know it was a surprise to me.

45 Charles Johnson  Tue, Apr 10, 2012 11:28:55am

Apparently Santorum already called Romney to concede. So his delegates will most likely be going to Romney.

Been saying from the very beginning that Romney would be the candidate; he's next in the GOP line of succession, end of story. All of this other stuff was just theater -- the religious right seeing how far they could push the envelope to the extreme right.

46 HappyBenghazi  Tue, Apr 10, 2012 11:29:48am

Wikipedia tells me that about 8% of live-born trisomy 18 children make it to age one, and about 1% make it to age 10. So this is unpleasant and unfortunate but far from unexpected. It might be a good reason to quit a fruitless campaign, but I don't believe he'd stop if he and Romney were reversed. I'd hope he wouldn't, because that would frankly either be a sign that he didn't take the presidency at all seriously, or that he doesn't understand how statistics work.

It will be absolutely fun to watch Santorum and Gingrich campaign for Romney after sliming him in all different ways.

91 Lidanghazi  Tue, Apr 10, 2012 11:43:40am

This is a particularly hilarious Freeper comment:

First his daughter should be number 1 and that illness severe. Second, Rick could win PA but if he lost he would have no political future, by stepping out now he is saving his political career.

Newt on Fox News Sunday pretty much conceded to Romney. I know there are many angry FReepers today, trust me I got yelled at by the Admin Moderator when Rick lost IL and I felt like my vote didn't count.

But I will state for the thousandth time. I've met Obama I looked into the eyes of an evil megalomaniac.

I don't need to list how bad he is. I knew that when he threatened HOF NFL Player and Super Bowl Coach Mike Ditka to withdraw from the 2004 IL Senate Race, then he went after GOP Front Runner Jack Ryan releasing sex documents from his divorce from celebrity actress Jeri Ryan. It was "kinky" sex between him and his wife, yet it caused him to withdraw and bring in Alan Keyes the carpetbagger to pander... Lost by 70% of the vote!!!

Now, black panther death threats, GSA gone wild, more green energy scams...

This election is going to determine whether we live in a dictatorship. I'm not going to start cheerleading for Romney. I'm going to scream from the rafters how awful Obama is. And we must do everything we can to stop this man from a second term. We helped GWB in 2000, we threw out Gary Condit, we caught Dan Rather lying and threw him out of his anchor chair, we threw out Gray Davis, the list goes on...

This is the most important race of our lives. Vote that thug out, vote out all of the Rats, every single one. Take back the Senate big time. Then we need to go back to work fixing everything this dictator has destroyed. Starting with the military. The fact that our Navy is at its lowest number since World War 1 should frighten every American. Our enemies are building ships as fast as they can.

History continues to repeat itself, don't think China, Iran, Russia, Syria, Muslim Brotherhood, Al-Qaeda, North Korea, and every other despot in the world will not lay down arms and sign kumbaya because Obama bows down to them.

Finally pray for our nation, pray that we destroy the Democrats in the Fall. Not only Nationally but in every State race. I hope now that it seems this race is over we can all send our donations, support and prayers to Governor Scott Walker who MUST win. Otherwise you will see a domino effect which will target Governor Kasich of Ohio.

This may sound callous but when The Santorums chose to have unprotected sex at that age a resulting pregnancy has a 1 in 10 chance of a genetic defect (like Bella has). This did not have to be with a little common sense and birth control. Actions have consequences. I fell terribly for Bella as she is tormented by her body. The Santorums of course will not think of it as that. I do.

He doesn't believe in contraception. His religion requires him to accept the children God sends him. The pregnancy was not unexpected, unless they thought his wife was in menopause. The religion sucks. The daughter suffers. IIRC, Mrs. Santorum's father is a genetic counselor or something, so the situation before and after the pregnancy was discovered were not surprises, unless some very educated heads were immersed in sand. Their religion requires them to do things differently than most of us would choose to do. And he wants to inflict the stringencies of his religion on everybody.

119 kirghazi  Tue, Apr 10, 2012 12:00:04pm

OK, pulled up the interactive map at 270towin. I gave Romney all states McCain won, I gave Obama all the states Kerry won, and checked the numbers. Obama is short, at that point, by 24 electoral votes. Florida by itself pushes him over. Ohio and anything-but-New Mexico pushes him over (that combo leaves him one short). Any three of the remaining states is sufficient.

The states left open, that Bush won in 2004 and Obama took in 2008, are:
Colorado, New Mexico, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida. Right now I think a lot of those look like Obama repeats.

Actually, RC church does believe in contraception--just not by artificial means. Don't ask me what the frickin' logic is. But there is a grave responsibility in creating a child that is A BIG part of the religion. They suggest the "taking your temperature so you know when you ovulate" method.

There is real value in the 'taking your temperature' method, in knowing more about your cycle, what part of it you are in, it's very educational. But as contraception, it requires a backup method, ie. abortion. There's a learning curve.

Vatican logic: "Artificial" contraception (condoms, The Pill, IUDs, etc.) are artificial barriers to having children that interfere with God's will.

The claim is that natural family planning is just as effective as the pill when done correctly. Problem is, most people don't do it correctly, since they may not read tests correctly, or miss symptoms, or they decide to hell with all of the record keeping and constant stress and have sex even when they think a woman might be in her fertile days, so they end up with a much higher risk of an unintended pregnancy. It's why even most Catholic couples don't bother with natural family planning and just use some sort of artificial birth control.

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez (R) has issued a firm denial of any interest in being vice president. Unlike some politicians we won’t name, she sounds like she actually means it. Now if/when Romney loses all we will hear for another four years is the same old, "We only lost because our candidate wasn't 'conservative' enough." Even if Romney gets hammered in the general election and loses by a large margin it isn't going to do anything to help bring sanity back to what used to be my party. The true believers will just rightfully claim that Romney was never their choice and didn't represent them anyway (pretty much like they have disowned George W). There is always biology to contend with. A very strong orgasm can produce ovulation out of sync with the cycle. Violent rape can also produce ovulation as it can cause a violent organsm. Something to do with evolutionary biology.

So the "take your temperature" method can backfire if the woman really enjoys spending time with her husband.

I still don't get why God doesn't like for science to be involved. I would think he would want each child to be wanted and planned for. I think it is the men in the church heirarchy who need worker bees to tithe.

The problem for Mitt is that any prime Republican will be reluctant to be a VP candidate with him if they perceive or if it looks like he might lose. Today's polling doesn't help him. I see that because running as a VP kills your chances to run for president at a later date.

Which they have pushed to the limits of incredulity.

Why?

The time lag takes a lot out of me. I think if I were to come back, I'd have to spend a month. My sleep cycle is still way off. Not sleeping makes the old body hurt more, the mind work less well and limits the activities one can engage in.

11 hours on a airplane didn't do the back any good either. Been wearing a brace and doing my exercizes so all is relatively ok, but it would take a week or so for me to be ready to do some hiking--which is what I would really like to do here. The geology is very cool. Lots of very interesting historical stuff on the islands too. Takes time to investigate and digest. A week long vacation isn't enough.

I'm not a hang-on-the-beach person. For beaches, partying, shopping touristy type stuff--I feel like I might as well be in Florida. Florida would be cheaper.

FYI--gas as been between $4.90 and $5/gal here. Luckily the island isn't so big that you burn lots of gas getting places.

I don't "know" they're going to try for a woman. I do, however, see your reasoning. They're losing white women at an ugly level. They're also losing hispanics, but the fight there hasn't had the politicians doing the 'no we're not' dance.

If you're going that way, the only governor that might hold a candle is Fallin of Oklahoma. However, I think you're missing the boat when you insist on only governors. Senators are good; Olympia Snowe comes to my mind as a possibility, with Kay Bailey Hutchison coming a distant second. Yes, they'd get some "RINO" cries, but I don't think either would really drive away the base.

That vitriol and venom isn't justified here.

The Santorum's wear their daughter and dead son like magical fetishes to augment their power in the debate over abortion. I find the public nature of their exposition, publishing books of letters to the son, talking about bringing him home and using both children as buttresses to a political argument morbid and creepy at the very least. I'm sure they also feel genuine love for both, but in arrogating themselves to the position of deciding what choices should be available to all prospective parents they're second guessing the love of those who would not choose a lifetime of pain and torment for their own unborn. That's what I find indefensible.

Nope. Regions don't matter so much as Romney's weaknesses are in the deep red states, which are going to stay red regardless. He needs to inspire turnout in close states in some fashion.

That means pulling states like Pennsylvania and maybe Wisconsin. The two routes are to appeal to the disgruntled crazy-base and excite them so they overwhelm the blue in those states, or bring back the women who are leaving in droves and overwhelm the blue that way.

The problem with the crazies is that's who is driving away the women. The women, on the other hand, annoy but do not drive away the crazies. The math works.

Note this doesn't mean it is what Romney will do, it just shows the avenue.

(And yes, the reasoning is such that Bachmann makes a great possibility. All you have to do is ignore reality.)

He had an Iraqi cop dragged in on suspicion of supporting the insurgents, allowed soldiers under his command to beat the shit out of the cop, then discharged his firearm next to the cop's head to scare him into believing that West was willing to kill him to get the information he wanted. The cop proceeded to blather out of a bunch of shit that turned out to be useless, which should come as no surprise to folks who understand that tortured suspects will say anything if they think it will make the torture stop.

re: #202 kirkspencer

I don't insist on governors - senator would be good also but they're too old and most considered RINO's (by the lunatic base). Snowe would work but Hutchinson is from TX and I really think they're going to try and snatch a state that Pres Obama won last time.

Actually, I can't think of anyone who wouldn't be a disaster.

Sane people have pretty much left the party or are burying themselves in their work of choice (like Condi)

Condi would be a great choice but I'm not sure she would accept.

To hell with the GOP-e. Barring a miracle, they got their big government, unconstitutional mandate loving, socialist abortionist Obama-lite RINO on the ballot, they can now get him elected.

We are the resistance!!

Shove him down our throats today, we shove him up your donkeys in November!!

re: #230 kirkspencer

You're right that the Confederacy will vote against Obama in all cases, but there is a lot of shoring up to do in evangelical, oyster-free 'Real America". How about Romney/Huckabee? You know, for the 'human' touch.

ADL: Domestic Extremists Seek To Exploit Trayvon Martin Shooting By Spreading Racism and Hatred

Extremists competing for attention in the aftermath of the shooting range from the anti-Semitic New Black Panther Party, which has organized protests in Sanford since the shooting and whose members have offered a $10,000 reward for the "capture" of Zimmerman, to the neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement, which says it is planning to carry out armed patrols in Sanford to protect local white citizens from alleged "racial violence" taking place there.

Among the more outlandish conspiracy theories surrounding the shooting, some extremists have even suggested that Zimmerman is in fact Jewish.

"It is deeply troubling that haters of all stripes are seeking to capitalize on the publicity surrounding the Trayvon Martin case in an effort to promote racism, bigotry and even anti-Semitism," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "The shooting of Trayvon Martin is a troubling case, but to add an element of racism and hate to the pressure-cooker environment surrounding this shooting is deplorable. As local and federal law enforcement continue to pursue their investigation, it is important for cooler heads to prevail and for Americans not to buy into the messages of hate and misinformation being promoted by domestic extremist groups."

This is true, but frankly, aside from my deep political and spiritual loathing for the man, his youngest child is most likely facing a very short life. I would like him to be doing something that enables him to spend time with her, rather than fruitlessly seeking a presidency he can't win.

Well, you can place the blame squarely on the GOP RINO-e, Karl Rove, Fox News and Mitt Romney himself for using their money, media and connections to utterly destroy the TEA Party and all of our conservative candidates. Eff ‘em. They deserve to go down as a failed party.
---

Romney is a draft dodger. Cowardly rich boy with connections refused to serve his country. None of his sons ever served either. It’s a family tradition. Romney loathed Reagan-Bush and conservatism. Ran and governed to the left of Ted Kennedy on gay rights, abortion, gun control, socialist healthcare, appoint liberal judges, etc. He’s nothing but a lying two-bit leftist political whore who will screw you in the end. Santorum made the choice, long ago, that consensual sex and politics should be intertwined. I think it's stupid and backwards and downright medieval, but here we are.

I don't consider that to have jack to do with whether I get to go around criticizing him having a child.

I'll happily criticize him for sticking his nose in other people's business, and for any hypocrisy that surfaces about his not doing as he tells others to do. But how and why Karen Santorum got pregnant at forty-eight, and what she chose to do then, is none of my goddamn business.

It's not just the confederacy, it's flyover - or at least the Great American Desert.

The two oddballs are Colorado and New Mexico, which have (relatively) small numbers of electoral votes and are on nobody's radar as bellwethers or leaders.

As I said earlier, Romney needs to take most of Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, and of course CO and NM from Obama to win. He can't pull from just one of those regions, he needs them all -- those, plus possibly Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, are the weak states.

Look at them on a map (or if you've got good spatial sense, in your head). Mark them by region, and ask who would come from one and sway others.

There is no strong region, no single region that by itself wins for Romney. So he's got to split the math on other variables.

If Wallace was here, he’d shoot lighting bolts from his eyes and fire balls from his arse. All I can do is refuse to vote for the socialist bastard that brought us ObamaCare (either one of them). RomneyCare begat ObamaCare and Romney already has a national healthcare task force lined up to bring similar RomneyCare programs to all 57 states. No thank you. He’s just more of the same.

287 thecommodore  Tue, Apr 10, 2012 4:31:57pm

Wow, 286 comments and no one mentioned how Santorum pulled out just as he was surging from behind.

288 labman57  Tue, Apr 10, 2012 9:21:32pm

Curious. A number of social conservative politicians have publicly declared that their political aspirations are the result of "speaking with God", some even going so far as to insist that their election campaigns were "God's will".

Santorum, Bachmann, Cain, Perry, Gingrich, Palin -- all have cited divine intervention as a primary motivator in their quest for higher office, including the current battle for the presidency.
And yet each has had his/her campaign for the 2012 GOP nominee either never materialize, quickly crash and burn, or in the case of Santorum and Gingrich, gradually founder.

So what insights can we glean from this turn of events? Perhaps God is an Ashton Kutcher fan, as He appears to have punk'd each of these POTUS wannabes.
