Citing a “law enforcement official close to the investigation,” the Washington Post reports that the special prosecutor in the Trayvon Martin shooting case is going to charge George Zimmerman with a crime.
They’re not saying exactly which charges will be filed, yet. A news conference is scheduled at 6 pm ET.
Charging him is one thing. Finding him is a whole 'nother. I have suspected for weeks that he's long gone out of the country. No one has reportedly seen him since this whole thing went down. Even his lawyers had never met him face to face, if I recall correctly. Only talked to him on the phone. If we ever see an actual trial, I will be surprised.
I am regularly thankful that I live in a country in which there are so many checks and balances on the power and operation of governmental (and private) organizations. Very very many things need to go wrong at once in order for a situation to be irrevocably screwed up. Even in this impressively botched grabasstic clown-show, the killer of Trayvon Martin looks (eventually) likely to be tried in a court of law for his actions.

Oh, I'm fairly certain that his family knows where he's hiding. The question is, are they willing to go to jail on "obstruction of justice" charges?
It clearly can't be murder 1, because that would have required a grand jury to be empaneled.
That leaves murder 2, 3, or manslaughter. My bet is on manslaughter, though it could be murder 2 and murder 3 depending on the evidence the prosecutor was able to review.
And we might get to see SYG fail as a defense. SYG never was about pursuit and stalking. It's a ridiculous stretch to say it does. Especially by a judge. There is SCOTUS precedent otherwise.
It's going to be a tough prosecution with the local cops botching their job early on. Also some key witnesses have made public statements and shown bias, which makes them easier to challenge on the stand.
I doubt if many will be happy with a plea bargain that doesn't include significant jail time.
His lawyers also intimated that Zimmerman was no longer in Florida, which raises issues of a manhunt/extradition. That conference yesterday was also a lesson of how not to dismiss your client. Could be seen as highly prejudicial against the client's interest (saying that he's not listening to advice, wont listen, and is doing his own thing).

Unless it can be shown that Zimmerman was breaking the law up until the critical point, it's hard to see how the SYG would not apply. It doesn't actually matter what the law was intended to accomplish. As long as it is badly written, it may still fuck things up.
I don't think he will be hiding from the law. The only real stumbling block would be if he was incapacitated - by himself or others. There is a possibility that he will be hiding, but that would be dumber than anything before this, taken together. I expect him to show up.

Considering that there was talk their media campaign of stating speculation about the case as "fact" was straddling, if not over the ethical line, nothing about the way they acted yesterday surprises me.
I think his attempt to contact the prosecutor bolsters that belief, but considering that his lawyers may (or should) have told him not to directly contact the prosecutor without their presence suggests otherwise.
If there was ever a time for someone to waive a jury trial, I imagine this is it. So many saying he cannot get a fair trial. If he waives, that problem goes away.
He probably can get a fair trial, just not in Sanford. Elsewhere in Florida? Probably.
First he'll have to surrender to authorities, obtain new counsel, and once we know what the charges are, we might get an idea of whether a plea deal could be worked out or whether this goes on through to trial.
Update as of 1:30pm EST on Tuesday, April 10th
I am attempting to respond to each and everyone of my supporters personally. The support has been overwhelming in volume and strength. I thank you all and ask that you permit me the time to respond to each one of you personally. Once again thank you.
Sincerely,
George Zimmerman
I've got $1 that says George Zimmerman and Joe Arpaio will have a show on Fox News Channel by Inauguration Day (regardless of the outcome of the election). It's a non-zero probability.
Hardened in the streets and prisons of California and deported in the 1990s to the Central American countries where they were born, the members of the Mara Salvatrucha street gang swiftly grew into a force of heavily tattooed young men carrying out kidnappings, murder and extortion.
Now, Guatemalan authorities say, they have begun to see new and disturbing evidence of an alliance between the Maras and another of the most feared criminal organizations in Latin America - a deal with the potential to further undermine that U.S.-backed effort to fight violent crime and narcotics trafficking in the region.
Secret jailhouse recordings and a turncoat kidnapper have described a pact between leaders of the Maras and the Zetas, the brutal Mexican paramilitary drug cartel that has seized control of large parts of rural northern Guatemala in its campaign for mastery of drug-trafficking routes from South America to the United States.
In recent months, authorities say, they have begun to see the first signs that the Zetas are providing paramilitary training and equipment to the Maras in exchange for intelligence and crimes meant to divert law-enforcement resources and attention.
Oh, I'm fairly certain that his family knows where he's hiding. The question is, are they willing to go to jail on "obstruction of justice" charges?
Lawhawk can fact check me on this, but I don't believe they can be charged with obstruction if they refuse to answer the question (where is he?) and tell the cops to talk to their Lawyer. They could only be charge if they answer the question with a lie (we don't know) that was later proven after the act.
I think his attempt to contact the prosecutor bolsters that belief, but considering that his lawyers may (or should) have told him not to directly contact the prosecutor without their presence suggests otherwise.
I knew he contacted Hannity without his lawyers knowing about it, and I think his website went up without their knowledge too, but he also tried to contact the prosecutor? Wow. I didn't know that.
I would think that any one of those things would be grounds for a lawyer to fire their client, but all three? No wonder they quit in such a fail-tastic way.

Apparently they got word from the special prosecutor's office that he'd tried to contact them without counsel present, referring to them as his "legal advisers." The office responded back that they couldn't talk to him without legal representation present.
I'm not sure whether to consider the man arrogant or cracked.
From Left to Right: Sam Dickson, Donald Templer, Robert Weissberg, James Edwards, Jared Taylor, David Yeagley, Richard Lynn, Alex Kurtagic, and Guillaume Faye.
If GZ is acquitted, should we expect riots?
Might be a good Page poll.
I for one do not think we will see Rodney King style riots.
I don't foresee riots if he's acquitted, though the NBP will probably try to fan the flames, but seeing as they don't have a big following outside of the white nationalists, very little will happen. Maybe protests, but no violence.
If Zimmerman is found guilty, yeah, I do see shit hitting the fan, thanks to the neo-Nazis and other racists try to instigate a race war, but I hope that I'm very, very wrong on this.
Either way, regardless of the trial, someone will be very pissed at the outcome.
From Left to Right: Sam Dickson, Donald Templer, Robert Weissberg, James Edwards, Jared Taylor, David Yeagley, Richard Lynn, Alex Kurtagic, and Guillaume Faye.
Only one I really know is Taylor. His group is HQed near where I grew up I believe.
You can read what he spoke about at the link. Here's an excerpt:
Mr. Kurtagic described our struggle as primarily a cultural war, one that is waged not only with words but with all the cultural tools at our disposal. He urged all racially conscious whites to throw themselves into our culture, to create living alternatives to the false consciousness that is destroying us. “Culture defines politics and not the other way around; We must win the culture before we can win elections.”
Mr. Kurtagic noted that the left is strong because it presents itself as a moral crusade and that it is the nature of the white man to believe that his plans and projects are moral. He concluded by pointing out that our enterprise should be seen for what it is: a heroic struggle for glory.
That last bit might sound familiar to most of you. Knights Templar anyone? Anders Breivik?
And we might get to see SYG fail as a defense. SYG never was about pursuit and stalking. It's a ridiculous stretch to say it does. Especially by a judge. There is SCOTUS precedent otherwise.
SYG has already been used as a successful defense for exactly that:
The "stand your ground" law gives a lot of leeway to use deadly force instead of retreating during a confrontation.
Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Beth Bloom ruled Tuesday that a bag of stolen car radios Pedro Roteta swung at Greyston Garcia amounted to a lethal threat. Bloom said Garcia "was well within his rights to pursue the victim and demand the return of his property."
Garcia went home instead of calling 911 after the confrontation in January and later hid the knife and sold two of the radios.
James Edwards repeats his white supremacist beliefs:
When it comes to changing how America thinks, “we are fighting an uphill battle on slippery ground,” and although we have organs of communication of our own, “the occasional Viking raid into the mainstream media” is very valuable. Mr. Edwards concluded that the main message of our people—“You cannot have a First-World nation with a Third-World population”—is so compelling that it cannot help but break through.
Ever notice how none of these imbeciles ever fits the Aryan ideal? None of the Nazi leadership fit the ideal either. What a shock. =P
I guess David Duke comes close, but when he was in Russia, some of our racists were not impressed - "He looks like a cartoon from Jehovah's Witnesses brochure".
Robert Weissberg proposed re-packaging or goind stealth with white supremacy/nationalism:
The first speaker Saturday morning was the always stimulating Robert Weissberg, Emeritus professor of University of Illinois at Champagne, who proposed “A Politically Viable Alternative to White Nationalism.” He argued that any movement that is explicitly based on white racial identity is “dead on arrival,” and must be repackaged in order to win successful recognition.
He then compares the coming out with "white pride" as that with the gay movement:
He did note, however, that because racial consciousness is so natural, it could return with surprising rapidity. He pointed out that ten years ago it would have been impossible to imagine homosexual marriage becoming a fashionable cause. Just as “homosexuals went from in the closet to being proud,” thinking about race could change dramatically.
Ever notice how none of these imbeciles ever fits the Aryan ideal? None of the Nazi leadership fit the ideal either. What a shock. =P
The only Nazi I can think of who really looked the part was Heydrich and he's rumored to have Jewish ancestry. The whole thing is flawed anyhow since we invent race and we're all originally African anyhow.

I'm in the middle of reading Destined to Witness: Growing up Black in Nazi Germany. I've been struck by a couple of things. One is the lack of Aryan characteristics in the leaders. Two is that the author quotes from Mein Kampf and it sounds exactly like these white supremacist assholes. Scary stuff.
OK, they've breached the Derpularity. From the description of Weissberg's "White Enclave" speech:
"Prof. Weissberg argued that an “80 percent solution” would be one that enforced the “First-World” standards of excellence and hard work that attract and reward whites. He pointed out that there are still many “Whitopias” in America and that there are many ways to keep them white, such as zoning that requires large houses, and a cultural ambiance or classical music and refined demeanor that repels undesirables. This approach to maintaining whiteness has the advantage that people can make a living catering to whites in their enclaves."
Man the Bach projectors, the barbarians are in the wire.
It depends on what the lawyers ask of Hannity and what Hannity was told by Zimmerman. Hannity may have to provide copies of the conversation, phone numbers, etc.
I have a couple of questions that I hope any of you can answer.
Does anyone know for sure if the New Black Panther Party actually put a bounty on GZ's head with wanted dead or alive posters? I've look and all I find are rightwing blogs and I don't trust them.
Also, does anyone know if the ABC video where they magnified GZ's head to show "scars" on the top of his had-has that video been discredited? Again, cannot find much and no one is talking about that clip.

It's all very strange to me. I've never seen a lawyer act like that in a high profile case such as this. Have you?
What would possess them to come out TODAY, coincidentally the very day they are going to allegedly charge him, and say, very specifically, we haven't seen nor heard from him since Sunday.
These are the lawyers who said they have been in close contact with him and know where he's been ever since the story got really hot. Wasn't it the same lawyers (or was it his friends) who said he's shocked and amazed that all this hubbub is swirling around him and he had no idea about it, like a week after it hit the papers. When you couldn't turn on the TV or look at a paper without seeing Zimmerman's face all over, and he knew nothing about it? Bullshit.
Something about this smells real bad to me. Unless it's purely coincidental.
I guess David Duke comes close, but when he was in Russia, some of our racists were not impressed - "He looks like a cartoon from Jehovah's Witnesses brochure".
Haha. I remember David Duke's campaign for governor in Louisiana. People there were so determined to keep him the hell out of office they voted for a man they KNEW was a thoroughly corrupt crook instead.
Sweet zombie Jeebus there's a bunch of dumb motherfuckers at that site. Wow.
Hence why I shook my head downstairs at the notion that filing charges when there's little chance that they'll stick would be a good call on the part of the special prosecutor. Just the act of bringing charges is stirring things up, as would the act of closing the case with no charges.
No, I foresee this thing ending up like a lot of cases in the last 20+ years have, leading to a trial and verdict that leaves one side or the other angry.
That case isn't precedent that a trial judge has to follow. If it was decided upon by the FL supreme court, that's a different story, but the court could deem that it doesn't apply to those who create the situation (which in this case is Zimmerman who followed Martin preceding the shooting).

It's not even that - I believe "Vote for the crook, it's important" appeared in real ads.

Precedent matters. Nothing in the laws text includes pursuit. The implication of the terms used is that you need not flee. I do not read that as an OK for pursuit or stalking someone down.

First of all, precedent works against you. There has already been a case where a guy followed a thief and shot him in altercation. Acquitted.
Second, I don't see how it is relevant that the law's text doesn't include pursuit. It doesn't forbid it, so it allows it.

This judge did however rationally believe that Garcia's bad behavior after the fact was immaterial to the defense, that even though hiding the knife was an obvious indication of guilt it should be ignored. Garcia didn't call 911 and only confessed when police showed him surveillance video of the altercation.
Precedent matters. Nothing in the laws text includes pursuit. The implication of the terms used is that you need not flee. I do not read that as an OK for pursuit or stalking someone down.
It doesn't say it's not OK either. Only clearly illegal actions prior to the confrontation are defined as obviating the defense. The law covers anyone who otherwise has a legal right to be where they are, and that's Zimmerman. The fact that it doesn't affirmatively deny the defense in cases of legal pursuit is an inherent flaw in the law, not in the reasoning of the judges and prosecutors who so far have comprehend its clear and unambiguous language.

Heh. That's not the class of people I've found with the most resistance to classical music in. Alaska Kim would always bail, for example, when we started talking Bach.

I think he must mean "classic rock" or "classic country". That is just the sort of thing that tends to keep non-white minorities at bay...

SYG is law and order: police, judge and jury all rolled into one.
Apparently, the people of Florida have decided that cops weren't good enough, so they made "street judge" a viable career choice. Don't even need a badge!

Yeah, remember that preppy kid from CT, I think it was. It was back in the late 80's or early 90's and he was accused of raping several women. His Parents gave him money and they eventually tracked him in Switzerland I believe. The cops were all over his parents but they lawyered up and wouldn't talk. I think the cops got a lead when they either intercepted an incoming call or a letter. Either way, it was quite a few years, the cops finally brought him in, the Parents knew all along and he was put in prison where he belonged.

I really don't get why you're sticking to this. As GDF discusses in his reply, ([Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...] there is an obvious counterargument. It seems like you're just deliberately avoiding the way that SYG could clearly be used to let Zimmerman go.
In fact, the police chief said, explicitly, that SYG was the reason Zimmerman want' charged. Whether that will stand up in a trial remains to be seen, but clearly the reality is that the law is, in the real world, conceived in such a way as to allow for pursuit on the part of the person claiming "self-defense." You have agreed that the law should be re-written, have you not? Isn't that because you agree that there is an inherent ambiguity?
Heh, I love how I get a "Breaking News" alert in my mail from the LA Times, breathlessly informing me that Charlie Manson's been denied parole for the 12th time. Maybe it's just me, but how is that "breaking news"?

I wanted to give a "thanks" to Gus and his friends and especially to Charles for staying on top of the racists in our midst. You all have been really awesome.
Zimmerman is so in over his head. I really believe he is being watched by the FBI. Maybe there is a detail of Federal Marshall attached to the Special Prosecutor. I know that when I worked at the courts in OKC they had them. Unfortunately there are quite a number of Zimmerman's out there. I bet his crazy Dad is advising him. That's why he is not more linked up with his lawyers. Big mistake.
This is a really important thing, to be able to have the presence of religion there but now we're seeing a hostility that we've not [seen before.] This is like England back in the fifteen and sixteen hundreds, quite frankly. Now, we're not burning people at the stake yet, but we are imprisoning people for their faith and to say that in America, that's unbelievable.
If these composer puns get any worse, I'm going to have to put some hip boots on...

He finds Beethoven sitting up, erasing his manuscripts.
Remember one of the great Founding Myths of America: that the pilgrims came here to escape religious perwsection.
They were fleeing because Europe, even back in the 1600's, was already too liberal and progressive to tolerate their fundamentalism. They came over so they could persecute non-believers and nobody would bother them about doing so...
You just have to say it, it doesn't have to be true. If he were talking about muslims I could agree with him, and I would bet my last dollar he would be at the front of any coalition to suppress their free religious expression.
Wiki article said they served a warrant at the Parents home and found pictures of them with the kid in Switzerland from the previous year, thus proving that they were lying when they told the Cops they didn't know where he was. Hence the obstruction charge.
I'm not about to "count any chickens" yet. I think I'll wait until the actual announcement.
Besides it is pretty much a pointless exercise, even if based on community outrage they do manage to get a jury to convict on some lesser charge it will be overturned on appeal later based on the actual letter of the current Florida laws.
I'm sorry, but I just do not believe that Zimmerman can be convicted of anything given the current laws in Florida. As long as he sticks to his original story and it also cannot be positively disproved by new evidence there is no chance of successful prosecution that will survive appeals.
If the prosecution has nothing beyond what we already know for definitive evidence then attempting to prosecute him will be nothing more than a political exercise in appeasement, one that will be ultimately futile.

If it makes one wannabe cop type think twice about stalking people while carrying a gun it's worth just the announcement that Zimmerman will be charged with something.

I am sorry that I have to agree with you, but I do. The law is on his side.
Had this case simply been brought to court right after it happened (as the arresting officers intended), then Zimmerman might have been acquitted without causing more than a minor outrage, but now this a national story.
I had a terrible little boy in my class once who petitioned to name his reading group 'Salvatrucha', swearing that it was the name of the El Salvador national soccer team.

Zimmerman's in custody and he's going to be charged with 2nd degree murder.
Or, they're anticipating a plea deal where he ends up pleading guilty to a lesser charge. He gets off with probation, and it creates the illusion that investigators actually did something. Problem "solved".

Florida has a very strict set of mandatory sentences for crimes involving guns. Ironically, they were passed as anti-gangbanger 'get tough' legislation.
They must have some serious evidence to go for 2nd degree murder. I expected manslaughter.
I thought 2nd degree murder was classified as manslaughter.
1st degree - Pre-planned deliberate killing
2nd degree (voluntary manslaughter) - taking action which you knew would lead to the death
3rd degree (involuntary manslaughter) - accidental death due to something the person did

Good. Seems like they have quite good evidence, otherwise manslaughter it would have been.
My Law & Order experience tells me that either the special prosecutor has enough evidence to go straight for 2nd degree murder without going for a plea bargain (seems kind of risky, not knowing what they know) or they're going for the max charge they can put in front of a jury and hope that they can either drag enough evidence/witnesses out to support the charge or to get Zimmerman to cop to murder 3 or manslaughter (much more likely).

Meanwhile, white supremacists, unable to kick ass, fall back on the idea that having some of the same genes as the Vikings makes them just as superior and cool.
It doesn't. As any Viking would tell you, happily.
The Vikings thought they were superior, not because of their sheer Nordic blonde good looks (although there is that) but because they simply kicked ass everywhere they went.
And lets not forget they could drink any Saxon under the table and still raid all day. And if they got killed some sexy ladies on winged horses carted them off to Valhalla to drink and fight until Ragnarok.

Having failed twice before, Rep. Frank Hoffmann, R-West Monroe, is promoting another stealth creationist bill, House Bill 116, which "provides relative to textbooks and other instructional materials for [public] elementary and secondary schools."When Rep. Gene Reynolds, D-Dubberly, expressed concern that HB116 could permit adoption of controversial books on evolution and other subjects (Advocate May 13), he was exactly right. Hoffmann responded, "That is ...
In a speech on April 15 before the McLennan County Republican Club, Greg Abbott, the Republican Attorney General and a potential candidate for governor in 2014, declared that Battleground Texas represents a bigger danger to the state than Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea: One thing that requires ongoing vigilance is the reality that the state of Texas is coming under a ...
... sorry about the rampant disregard for spell checking or proper grammar, the irony of it being Nazi's with grammar issues is not lost on me.
I won't admit to how many of the things mentioned in this video I used (or was guilty of)

WINDSOR, Ontario -- Assumption Park gives residents of this city lovely views of the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit skyline. Lately they've been treated to another sight: a three-story pile of petroleum coke covering an entire city block on the other side of the Detroit River. Detroit's ever-growing black mountain is the unloved, unwanted and long overlooked byproduct of Canada's oil sands boom. ...

A scowling Donald Trump raised his voice on the witness stand Wednesday while an attorney grilled him and then rolled his eyes at the "Apprentice" star's answers, prompting a federal judge to scold both men in open court and order them to behave. The admonition came during Trump's second and final day on the stand at a civil trial where he is accused ...

Zounds! Kenny Bunk has found the method to Obama's madness!
BTW, for what it's worth, I am becoming convinced that the key to "understanding" the Obama Phenomenon is Deconstruction Philosophy, Dadaism

I grew up about 30 miles North of Chris Herren. Being the same age, I followed his career from Highschool through College at Fresno State then to the hometown Boston Celtics via the Denver Nuggets. So his fall from grace (after what appeared to be a remarkable recovery) was disappointing. This article... Herren tells Bromfield teens and parents tough truths ...sums up what Herren ...
It must be a slow news day for the right wing media, especially after President Obama shut down a couple of conspiracy theories, or at least somewhat. So, Drudge Report, Twitchy and the Weekly Standard have stumbled on to Obama's next dastardly deed. President Obama (wait for it) uses an umbrella when it rains. That rat bastard! Obama acts like he's the President ...
A new study confirms that the vast majority of scientists who research the climate accept that the planet is warming and human beings are largely responsible. Yet a large slice of the American public believes that scientists are deeply split about global warming.

Your sex appeal shoots through the roof! You achieve the status of "sexy man". Your wife sees you in a new attractive light which is the only light that allows her to see you this way. In fact, many other women notice as well--wherever you are. You morph into that man other guys envy and women adore. And until now, you had no ...
We are in the midst of the worst Washington scandal since Watergate. The reputation of the Obama White House has, among conservatives, gone from sketchy to sinister, and, among liberals, from unsatisfying to dangerous. No one likes what they're seeing. The Justice Department assault on the Associated Press and the ugly politicization of the Internal Revenue Service have left the administration's credibility deeply, ...
Political discourse in America has reached levels of douchebaggery previously only theorized about but never observed, like conversational dark matter. We're in a whole new world of hating people based solely on their opinions on a few key issues, and since this is unexplored territory, our conversations about politics are usually only a couple notches beyond the "hold your breath until the other ...
Los Angeles leaders say the Los Angeles Police Department has undergone a dramatic transformation since federal oversight of the agency was ordered 12 years ago. The dismissal Wednesday of the so-called consent decree, which arose largely out of the Rampart corruption scandal and addressed basic problems of accountability that stretched back decades, delivered a largely symbolic, but nonetheless important milestone for the LAPD ...
Seems a good way to solicit ideas for touristing destinations and activities. Will have 4-5 days so some opportunity for visiting multiple sites. And since I do have an interest in history and military history items in that area will be welcome suggestions. (The USS Midway down in San Diego is already on the list.) If there is anything California-geology related that would be ...
I hate to have to point this out, but: I DID NOT WRITE THIS ESSAY. I'm just READING IT ALOUD. This essay came to my attention recently, and it's an excellent exercise for a skeptic or atheist to experience this feeling of loss of innocence and the painful feelings it summons. See it through to the end before posting, please. The source:samharris.org Next ...
