When my grandmother was at the end, the doctor told her that she could go into the ICU, and live a month, or go into a hospice, and live two weeks, or go home and live a week.

She actually came to my parents' home, where the family could gather around for her last days. I will always be grateful for her brave choice.

That's awesome she could be with you all. I don't think people realize that dying is a process. It's not like in the movies. You're sick, you feel bad, you speak a last word and that's it. It can go on for awhile and everyone knows what the end result with be, you just don't know when.

I've always said, it's the greatest blessing you can give, to be at the bedside. It's also the greatest curse - living with the pain of missing a beloved one.

Of course, thanks, this is a good point too. Really if I were a woman, I'd probably dislike the Republican Party more than I already do. They only seem to care about serving the needs of the very wealthy and those who share their views on religion. Instead of becoming more inclusive, they have become more exclusive.

I wish my mom had done that. She severely declined in the hospital after a broken leg of all things and I honored a promise to let her go by having the machines turned off. I held her hand until the monitors all showed she was gone. Long ago now but it feels like last week.

I'm glad that you could be there. My mother was holding Grandma's hand when she left us.

I'm feeling the generational chain right now because my mother is current in the kitchen with her expensive embroidery machine embroidering the bodice of The Princess's prom dress. (This is one serious dress.) My mother made my dress, Grandma made Mom's dresses.

So what you do, you knit or crochet a vagina and send it to your representatives with a note saying something to the effect "If we knit you a uterus, will you stay out of ours?" And ask them to support Roe v Wade, a woman's right to an abortion, birth control and family planning options.

I asked them if I could cross stitch one! LOL I have to devise a pattern, but it shouldn't be hard. Anyhoo, they said yes, but asked if I could send them a note on what I made and who I sent it to. They want to keep track.

I think something else is going on. Twitter is cracking down on spammers. If you exhibit spam-bot like behavior with your account it might get suspended. This has been happening with the joke Twitter accounts. Read more here.

Well, the LGF Stalkers who were banned, as far as I know, have had complaints about them since their twitter accounts appeared and at least one of them was almost a verbatim name of Gus. And not all the LGF Stalkers have been banned, much to my personal chagrin.

Looks like a partisan pissing contest coming to fruition. When the squeaky wheel gets the grease everybody starts to squeak. Companies are only too happy to cater to the most noisy and easily offended members of society. I'd say more but I'm on hold complaining about radio shows I don't like or listen to.

Well I occasionally tweet, but not that much. I look at the two mass suspensions of the Stalkers and the Atheists, and one pattern is that they were both communities of like minded people that tweeted mostly to each other and exclusively on that one subject. Twitter might be just saying to them both.. Get a room.

I love to tweet the Sunday morning new shows with a group of folks and we have an awesome time. However, every week, without fail, I'll catch at least 3 followers, sometimes 5 or more, that are just porn. They're all women's names, like Andrea49287. They have a regular picture, usually of a pretty girl smiling, and some "words of wisdom" tweets, if any. Usually (not always) not nasty or nothing too nasty, but the URLs are always really super nasty.

Anyhoo, the sites are the same basically, in feel and style, name style, avatar style, no backgrounds (just the blue sky) and obvious they're generated from something.

Twitter wouldn't be suspending atheists and all I've seen mentioned was 5 atheist accounts and they've managed to turn it into a conspiracy. Previously a stalker account was suspended but it came back. This might explain the suspensions we were seeing earlier.

OK, gotta share, because this just made me sad and schmaltzy.

This afternoon, I was tutoring a boy about twelve, who comes to us for writing skills. Black kid, wearing a gray hoodie with the hood up (the kids do not like to come out of them for any reason, and while I make them when I'm in the classroom, because school rules, I let them do whatever is best for their concentration at the tutoring sessions.)

During the 'transition time', which is when we all check in and play word games or hear announcements, the leader looks over my shoulder at him and says, "Bob (not his real name), if you didn't bring enough for everyone, put those away!"

And I glance over to see him grin and put his Skittles back in his backpack.

Just about cried.

The atheists are pretty young on average. They tend to fault these kinds of things on authority rather than some stupid mistake like a spam-bot algorithm. I Tweet a lot but most of my Tweets are just links. Rarely do I spend a lot of time sending too many Tweets to others. I anyone emailed a complaint about an atheist to Twitter they'd turn around and tell you "we won't do anything so if you don't like it just block them" more or less.

Quiet night it seems.

This is being typed on my 9 year old PowerBook, given that my iMac's system disk crashed this afternoon. Just wouldn't come back on (indeed the system profiler can't even find it.) Lasted about 3.5 years of daily use, which is about average for hard drives in my experience.

Sad thing is last night after backing up my tax docs to a memory stick I thought of running Time Machine (which I normally keep off and only do aperiodic backups)... alas, now I've lost data.

Computers - after using them since the 1970s I think the time has come for us to move beyond them. They break down more often than we do.

It gives the McNeils' side of the story, and notes McNeil was convicted of murder, but it neither explains the course of his trial nor the grounds of his appeal to the Georgia Supreme Court nor the reasoning the majority of the states justices used in upholding his conviction. Those seem crucial facts, and I argue one cannot draw a honest conclusion about the case without them.

• So I think.
• Stay at home mom and married.

• 5 kids.
• Due to the GOP platform they can't get an abortion as needed.
• They also don't qualify for contraception.

I think from what I've seen of Romney so far, by far his most stupid comment was the firing people joke. I am not dense. I understand bosses have to fire people but to say you like to fire people. That's not the attitude you want from the guy in charge of setting economic policy for the country. Romney's problem isn't that he's wealthy. He could be a mere millionaire and his problem would still be that he thinks that wealth is directly correlated with work ethic. It's a very elitist way of looking at the American worker from a man who is clearly not fit to be president. Hell I wouldn't even want him running a company. He's not a dumb man as far as business is concerned but he only seems to care about what's good for Mitt.

This is not surprising. These people liked Stand Your Ground laws because they thought it meant they could shoo any black person that scared them (all black people) and not go to jail for it. They thought they had a Shoot Blacks and Get Out of Jail Free card. If Zimmerman is convicted this means they don't get to shoot scary blacks (all of them) and may end up om jail with a bunch of really scary blacks if they do. First they lost their right to not have a black president and now they may have lost the right to shoot black people. This is a very sad day for them.

Take a look at the SPLC's pages on north-east Wisconsin for example. Lot's of freakazoids up there, alas. Some I know of that aren't on their radar as well. We've had a couple of areas up there, township sized, that think they're sovereign nations though no reason to push the issue has come up. When it does there will be casualty lists in the dozens to hundreds.

I took a look at what the Georgia State Supreme Court's majority wrote in upholding McNeil's conviction. Here's their reasoning, which does appear quite sound:

1. Viewed in the light most favorable to the verdict, the evidence reveals that, in September 2005, McNeil contracted to buy an unfinished home from Epp Elevations, a small building company owned by Epp and his wife.   On December 6, 2005, Epp went to McNeil's house to complete required work.   McNeil's son, La'Ron, was home and called McNeil to report that someone was in the backyard.   Believing that Epp was a trespasser, La'Ron confronted Epp and asked him to leave, and an argument ensued during which Epp pointed a knife at La'Ron.   La'Ron called McNeil to report this incident to him.

In response, McNeil headed home in his car.   On the way back he reported to an emergency 911 operator that a man was on his property and had pulled a knife on his son.   Moments later, McNeil told the operator, “I'm at the property now ․ and there's the builder and I may get ready to whip his ass right now.   So get the cops here now.”   As McNeil was pulling into his driveway, he retrieved an automatic handgun from his car's glove compartment, removed it from its case, and loaded it with ammunition.

An eyewitness who was across the street heard McNeil and Epp arguing loudly.   A few minutes later he heard a loud pop and saw smoke and McNeil pointing his hand toward the ground and stepping backward.   Epp was in the yard between McNeil's house and the one next door and walking toward McNeil.   McNeil continued to back up with his hands pointed toward the ground and said “Back up, I am not playing with you.”   Epp increased his speed toward McNeil and McNeil raised his gun and fired at Epp's head.   Epp's hands were at his sides, and the eyewitness did not see him raise his hands or see any weapons in his hands.

Later, an officer arrived at the scene and found Epp on the ground with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.   McNeil informed the officer that Epp had pulled a knife on him and then McNeil shot him.   The officer saw a knife clipped inside the right hand pocket of Epp's pants.   A forensic investigator from the Cobb County Medical Examiner's Office also responded to the scene and noticed that the knife in Epp's pocket was folded.   Dr. Brian Frist, the Chief Medical Examiner of Cobb County, later determined that the abrasions on Epp's face indicated that he had been shot at a distance of less than three feet.   There were no abrasions on Epp's hands to indicate that he had raised his hands to defend himself.

State, 254 Ga. 624(1), 331 S.E.2d 516 (1985) (despite claim of self-defense, evidence supported felony murder conviction based on aggravated assault where defendant retrieved pistol in anticipation of confrontation and told victim to leave before shooting him).   Indeed, from the evidence presented, the jury was authorized to conclude that McNeil decided to confront Epp with the specific purpose of “whip[ping] his ass” before Epp even knew that McNeil was on his way to the scene;  that McNeil had time to stop in his driveway, retrieve a gun from his glove compartment, take the gun out of its case, load it, exit from his car, and “argue loudly” with Epp for a few minutes before firing the first shot at him;  and that McNeil lied to police when he claimed that he had shot Epp because Epp had “pulled a knife on him” during the confrontation (because other eyewitness testimony showed that Epp had no weapon in his hands at the time of the shooting, and further testimony showed that Epp's knife was folded and in his pocket after he had been shot).   Because “[w]itness credibility is a matter to be determined by the jury, as is the question of justification;  ․ the jury was free to accept the evidence that the shooting[ ][was] not done in self-defense ․ and to reject any evidence offered by [McNeil] in support of a justification defense.”  (Citation omitted.) Harris v. State, 279 Ga. 304, 306(2), 612 S.E.2d 789 (2005).   As sufficient evidence existed to support the conclusion that McNeil committed the offense of aggravated assault, and felony murder predicated on that aggravated assault, there is no basis for overturning the jury's verdict here.2

Note two critical points missing from the Salon article:

A. The Salon article did not mention McNeil saying to the 911 operator “I'm at the property now ․ and there's the builder and I may get ready to whip his ass right now.   So get the cops here now.” (bolding mine) That sort of confrontational talk can and does get used to contradict claims of self-defense by potentially showing the defendant 'went looking for a fight'. A claim of self-defense is undermined if it can be shown the defendant went into the situation with hostile intent.

2. The article does not mention that McNeil said Epps had pulled a knife on him, which Epps had not in fact done. Even though Epps had pulled a knife on McNeil's son, the fact that Epps had not drawn the knife in his pocket when he was shot and that McNeil initially claimed he had served to undermine McNeil's credibility. People are convicted sometimes because they gave police statements immediately after a fight or a shooting and the facts later were found to be different from that statement. This is why defense lawyers and self-defense experts always recommend that if you have to defend yourself you should talk to a lawyer before giving a statement to the police.

A standard MIRV would have its warheads explode in a combination of the 3 types to maximize all three effects.

One of the joys about having a high GT score was I got sent to a bunch of secondary schools while I was in. NBC school still wakes me up sometime. Its an extremely brutal, effective school of warfare which is why every sane nation has severe limitations on its implementation. You don't want to see what chemical weapons can do.

Beyond a bit of light reading I think the main places I've seen NBC effects discussed is various wargames set in the modern (50s - 90s) age that generally were simulations of NATO-Warsaw Pact going at it in Europe.

With the Warsaw Pact more likely to start chemical warfare in order to mess with NATO airbases and expected air superiority, but NATO more likely to resort to tactical nuclear weapons in order to offset Warsaw Pact armor superiority. And generally one leading to the other, and hopefully the latter not leading to a full-blown exchange.

Very little discussion other than in passing about what all this does to the civilian population in West Germany and downwind from there. Luckily the political leaders in that time period on both sides never saw sufficient necessity to ever bring one of these scenarios into being.

Not only does it not make sense (i.e., what would have been the "outside world" 60,000 years ago?) but there is no evidence for it.

If genetic data could be collected we could determine if some of the Andaman island inhabitants are their close relatives, which is likely. Similarly small populations of people in the region have very low fertility, probably due to inbreeding over the centuries. As such, it is highly unlikely the Sentinelese have been there for longer than several centuries.

If genetic data could be collected we could determine if some of the Andaman island inhabitants are their close relatives, which is likely. Similarly small populations of people in the region have very low fertility, probably due to inbreeding over the centuries. As such, it is highly unlikely the Sentinelese have been there for longer than several centuries.

Yeah, a genetic inquiry would be invaluable.

You have to wonder about resistance to diseases, etc., too.

The geneticists would have a field day.

I was just talking to a cop friend about confession getting-- from actually guilty folk. He said that basically:

Ordinary citizens (who have committed a one-time crime) almost always confess within the first 24 hours because it's all weird and stressful to them and they want to just get it off their chest.

Criminals will normally confess if you either sympathize with them or pretend to be impressed by them. Yelling at them is not nearly as effective. A lot of cops can't stomach pretending to be friendly with rapists and face-stabbers, so they wind up yelling and get nowhere.

Smart criminals just say "I want a lawyer" and nothing else, ever.

But so does anyone with resources who knows how the system operates.

He would contact a lawyer immediately if ever arrested, and he's told his kids to.

I don't think Zimmerman is totally "innocent" in all this. It was his gun and he pulled the trigger. He was the one that went out of his way to keep an eye on a kid that wasn't doing anything wrong. I think Martin made a tactical error to confront a guy who was out of line and it spiraled out of control.

SYG prevents an arrest unless probable cause exists to believe that the law is not applicable. So no, it doesn't prevent investigation, it just prevents an arrest, and thus the collection of any evidence that could be obtained via an arrest. I think any evidence of that sort that Zimmerman voluntarily surrendered would not be protected.

Let me make this clear: I certainly think George Zimmerman committed a crime. And he was irresponsible and reckless to go carrying a gun. And I believe this even if Zimmerman's story is 100% accurate.

Zimmerman was following this young man and asking him questions. Martin was justifiably offended. He lived only a few blocks away from Zimmerman! It's likely that Martin did become aggressive. Where Zimmerman made a reckless decision was carrying a gun. Because you can end up getting yourself into a corner where you feel you have to use it. If Martin had knocked Zimmerman down, thinking he'd throw a few punches and make his point and then felt Zimmerman's gun, Zimmerman may have believed he had to use it.

The problem is, Trayvon Martin was a high school student. He was expecting nothing more than a shoving match, a little "hallway brawl". He wasn't expecting a wanna-be cop with a gun.

But I disagree it was an "accident". George Zimmerman should not be carrying a gun and confronting people. If he felt he needs to travel somewhere and needs a gun, he should be doing everything to avoid confrontation. Your goal is not to have to use it, not to find a reason to use it.

Elections Canada has issued political parties and candidates their spending limits for the May 2 election.

The elections agency released the preliminary figures on Wednesday, based on the preliminary list of electors in Canada's 308 ridings.

The amounts political parties can spend in the ridings varies according to the numbers of voters.

The more voters there are in a riding, the more a party can spend to get its candidate elected. So a party running a candidate in Oak Ridges-Markham in Ontario can shell out $132,251 during the campaign, while parties fielding candidates in the riding of Nunavut can spend $14,860.

There are separate spending limits for the political parties and the individual candidates.

Any party that fields a candidate in each of the 308 ridings can spend just more than $21 million in the election campaign, according to Elections Canada. The spending caps on the parties hovered close to $20 million in 2008.

See we make it illegal to spend a shit ton of money to get elected in Canada. What a novel idea.

It's tough to know whether it was or wasn't broken based on that photo alone. One would have the compare the booking photo to a pre-Martin-death photo to know for sure.

Hard to know, and medical records would come into question since he's putting his own condition at issue (eg: claims to have been beaten into the ground, suffered cuts/abrasions, broken nose). Medical records of treatment would come into play.

Jury Selection To Begin In John Edwards Criminal Trial

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — After years of investigation, denials and delays, jury selection was set to begin Thursday for the criminal trial of former presidential candidate John Edwards.

Edwards was expected inside a Greensboro, N.C., courtroom to face six criminal counts related to nearly $1 million in secret payments made by two campaign donors to help hide the married Democrat’s pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008.

The money flowed to Andrew Young, a former campaign aide who initially claimed the baby was his. Young is expected to be a key witness for the prosecution. The mistress, Rielle Hunter, may testify as part of Edwards’ defense.

Following years of adamant public denials, Edwards acknowledged paternity of Hunter’s daughter in 2010.

The trial is expected to last about six weeks.

Well, I have to take slight issue with how you present this. That is: I don't care if someone is on or has been on any form of government assistance. For starters, everyone gets government assistance, whether they realize/acknowledge it or not, in the form of everything the government does for us. Second, if you need more because things just haven't worked out well for you? Uh, OK? I see no problem with that. I'm not going to judge people for things mostly or totally out of their control.

Seriously, that sort of argument from the wingnuts is one that turns my stomach something fierce. That there's only two classes: those who work and those who "steal" from the workers. That black/white mentality is what is ripping America apart more than any talk from the wingers about Obama formenting a "race war" or how the war on women is "fictional." That 49% that the far-Right's gotten their knickers in a knot about not only includes "hardworking Americans" who lost their jobs through no fault of their own, but also the hardworking Americans who put in an honest day's work 5-6 days a week and still can't get above the poverty line.
