It’s interesting to see the same weird, bigoted memes emerge simultaneously at both the top and the bottom of the right wing food chain.

Emerging from the bottom, a comment posted at Breitbart.com in their ongoing series of attacks on CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien:

“Soledad.” One helluva sexy name — that is, until you’re reminded of that maximum security prison she was named after.

And from the top, Fox News chief Roger Ailes: Soledad O’Brien Was ‘Named After a Prison’.

Roger Ailes made a jaw-dropping comment about CNN’s Soledad O’Brien during a college lecture on Thursday night.

The Fox News chief was speaking to journalism students at the University of North Carolina. In the question-and-answer segment of the talk, he referred to O’Brien as “that girl that’s named after a prison.”

Ailes was referring to the Soledad Correctional Facility in Monterey County, California. CNN responded to the remark on Friday. An insider told The Huffington Post, “Roger is wrong. Soledad is named after the Virgin Mary, ‘Maria de la Soledad.’ It’s a name her parents gave her in part because they met at Daily Mass.”

There's something about Soledad Prison that brings out the poet in everyone. Folks look at that bleak bunch of concrete blocks and think, "I have GOT to name my daughter after that godforsaken correctional facility."

It's more or less what I expected, but it's nice to see it confirmed - the newsroom is, by and large, ordinary people, who rationalise to themselves that selling fear and hatred to nuts is an okay way to make a living, and do so with full awareness that that's what they're doing. And shrug helplessly when the truly hideous decisions come down from on high.

Actually its a bit more awkward than that, because last time I checked thanks to cochlear implants and all we're getting pretty good at curing genetically passed on deafness....

Of course then you have the issue of parents who don't want their kids to get the implants made more awkward by the fact that they need to get them early in life (well before they're of legal age) to get the real benefit out of them...

I think there's societal argument for disallowing 'normal' incest, because it normally involves a power imbalance of some sort. But these people didn't grow up together. Biologically, they weren't programmed to avoid this-- we gain our aversion to incest by being raised together.

However, having children together was massively irresponsible. On the other hand, I do feel that way about people with known significant genetic defects who choose to have children.

It's all a big sticky mess, and the only thing I think is that jail time is probably not going to improve anything for anyone.

Well, it's a very different sort of power imbalance. There isn't anything like a familial relation. I'm not saying all relationships involving a power imbalance ought to be prohibited, but that you can argue that familial relations would constitute ones that do.

The main reason I care about it is for parent-child incest, where it's far more likely to have begun in coercion and continue in the shadow of that coercion, and that can be impossible to prove due to, well, the coercion.

The only possible parent child incest situation I could even mentally imagine that wouldn't involve abuse would be the kind where the child was conceived by the parent who was a teenager at the time and then gave the child up for adoption and thus had NOTHING at all do to with raising them and they meet up again a few decades down the line without realizing their genetic relationship ahead of time.

But yeah if you were involved in raising a child you can't have any sort of sexual relationship with that child without it being all sorts of sick and wrong...

Americans currently express record-low concern about both air pollution and pollution of drinking water. Thirty-six percent say they worry a great deal about air pollution and 48% about pollution of drinking water. Both figures are down more than 20 percentage points from the year 2000.

These results are based on Gallup's annual Environment poll, conducted March 8-11. The trends are part of a broader decline in worry about environmental threats documented in the poll.

Gallup asked Americans to say how much they worry about each of seven environmental problems. All show significantly less worry today than in 2000, when worry was at or near its high point for each item. The declines in concern about drinking-water pollution and air pollution are the largest for the problems included in this year's poll.

Personally, I'm not sure that I'd want to admit that my site or sites that I'm defending seem to be packed full of liberal socks whose job it is to make the Right look racist. Hell, if that were really my argument, I'd consider shutting my site down. Or, at the very least, doing something to police all those socks, like deleting their comments and banning them.

Seriously, if the "logic" is that all racist comments or even that the bulk of them are "false flag" posts made by liberal agitators, then what does it say of the people running the sites/blogs that they not only allow these posts to stay, but allow the most prolific of the posters to remain in good standing?

Of course - that's what makes this ridiculous. Nothing was ever planted by Killgore Trout, he used his own name and made it clear what he was doing and why, and even more to the point - I didn't put him up to it, or plan it with him. If he'd asked before getting all up in it, in fact, I would have advised against it.

It was kind of an obnoxious stunt, but it certainly got their attention. Hot Air tightened up their moderation a little after that, a tacit admission that KT had a point. The overt racism problem on right wing blogs was getting out of control.

And it's only gotten worse since then.

If you're rejecting the psychiatric record, there's no way to attain those numbers.

Fundamentally, this just kind of ain't no one's business. We're talking about consenting adults. They may be taboo-breaking adults who squick the rest of us the hell out, but I have a hard time figuring out why that should be illegal, per se. And really, in terms of inbreeding, one sibling pairing is nothing, unless they're already really genetically messed up.

Nope, because with children the harm can be derived from more general principles, which also happen to be more obvious. It's not necessary to base this on psychiatric record of actual cases. There's simply no analogy between adult and children-adult "relationships". Besides, in adult relationships you have to go an extra-step, because you're denying consenting (prima facie) adults their rights.

Also, it's not the state's role to regulate the supposedly abusive relationships between consenting (prima facie) adults on its own. It's not up to the state to divorce an abusive husband from his wife, even though their relationship can be visibly dysfunctional. It's still up to her to leave him and ask the state for protection, if necessary.

If you're going to make the assumption that nothing in the record can be relied upon because there could be cases of incest that are outside the record and unreported that are positive, it's pretty impossible to disprove that.

But this objection doesn't make your argument more valid. No, it's still not sufficient to analyze only abusive incestuous relationships, because by definition you will conclude that they're abusive. Eh, I've got no room to take. I still remember the days when you spent 5 minutes waiting for a jpeg to load, only for your computer to say "Fuck it" halfway through. Or leaving your computer on all day just to download a 10MB file.
