Roger Ailes on Soledad O’Brien: ‘That Girl That’s Named After a Prison’

Ailes echoes right wing blog commenters

It’s interesting to see the same weird, bigoted memes emerge simultaneously at both the top and the bottom of the right wing food chain.

Emerging from the bottom, a comment posted at Breitbart.com in their ongoing series of attacks on CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien:

“Soledad.” One helluva sexy name — that is, until you’re reminded of that maximum security prison she was named after.

And from the top, Fox News chief Roger Ailes: Soledad O’Brien Was ‘Named After a Prison’.

Roger Ailes made a jaw-dropping comment about CNN’s Soledad O’Brien during a college lecture on Thursday night.

The Fox News chief was speaking to journalism students at the University of North Carolina. In the question-and-answer segment of the talk, he referred to O’Brien as “that girl that’s named after a prison.”

Ailes was referring to the Soledad Correctional Facility in Monterey County, California. CNN responded to the remark on Friday. An insider told The Huffington Post, “Roger is wrong. Soledad is named after the Virgin Mary, ‘Maria de la Soledad.’ It’s a name her parents gave her in part because they met at Daily Mass.”

Of course, that means Roger was named after a British slang term for having sex.

Why does the right-wing hate the Virgin Mary?

One presumes he knows better, but it's 'a funny', both because it allows them to be dismissive of her, obnoxious about her funny non-Anglo name, and because it raises echoes of the 'black people give their kids funny stupid names, she was probably named after the prison because people in her family were in there, har har' kind of joke that too many of Ailes' commenters like.

His comments about the FoxNews "mole" are pretty jawdroppingly stupid as well.

He condemned the Fox News mole, the former employee who was fired after writing anonymous posts about the network. “The mole shows a culture that believes in theft, a lack of loyalty, turning on his colleagues, lying to management, and there are some real, ethical, serious questions about it,” Ailes said.

And we know that NewsCorp would never, EVER engage in any unethical activites.

Its not the first time Roger Ailes has used the lame tactic to insult someone with a play on words with their name..

In early 2007, Ailes joked about the similarity of Obama's name to a certain terrorist's. "It is true that Barack Obama is on the move," Ailes said in a speech to news executives. "I don't know if it's true that President Bush called Musharraf and said, 'Why can't we catch this guy?'" References to Obama's middle name were soon being bandied about on Fox & Friends, the morning happy-talk show that Ailes uses as one of his primary vehicles to inject his venom into the media bloodstream.

I find the first comment there by a FOX employee fascinating. It's more or less what I expected, but it's nice to see it confirmed - the newsroom is, by and large, ordinary people, who rationalise to themselves that selling fear and hatred to nuts is an okay way to make a living, and do so with full awareness that that's what they're doing. He is the former President of Marriott Hotels and Northwest Airlines; former assistant to U.S. Presidents Richard Nixon and H.W. Bush; and former National Finance Committee Co-Chair for John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign.
Fred Malek is also part of a group of men who were arrested after killing and barbecuing a dog in a city park in Peoria, IL.
....
In 1959, Malek and four other men in their 20s were arrested at 2 a.m. in a Peoria park when police found them covered in blood. Police found a skinned animal on a spit. Malek said he had nothing to do with the dog killing.

Definition of AIL

transitive verb
: to give physical or emotional pain, discomfort, or trouble to

intransitive verb
: to have something the matter; especially : to suffer ill health

So putting an 'es' at the end just means it is plural?

92 RadicalModerate  Fri, Apr 13, 2012 3:13:48pm

I see that Romney decided to kick off the "non-primary" part of his presidential campaign by speaking to the most paranoid, conspiracy-minded group that he could find:

In an address to the National Rifle Association's convention billed by Romney's advisers as a launch of his general election campaign, Romney said Obama's attack on freedom is to blame for the country's slow economic recovery from recession.

According to MSN, a trending story today:

Brother-sister couple fail in fight against anti-incest laws

The European Court of Human Rights has decided to keep incest in Germany illegal, citing the damages inbreeding can cause to offspring. The ECHR was prodded into making such a seemingly obvious statement because of a brother-sister couple who says their home country of Germany had no right to penalize their relationship. The pair did not grow up together, but met in their 20s after the brother, who had been adopted, tracked down his biological family, and they now have four children, two of whom are described as having "disabilities." Surprisingly, if the court had overturned the ban, it would not be the first European effort to decriminalize incest: France doesn't prosecute such relationships, and Sweden allows half-siblings to marry.

I wonder if the SoCons could get Mitt to make a campaign issue out of this...

Actually its a bit more awkward than that, because last time I checked thanks to cochlear implants and all we're getting pretty good at curing genetically passed on deafness....

Of course then you have the issue of parents who don't want their kids to get the implants made more awkward by the fact that they need to get them early in life (well before they're of legal age) to get the real benefit out of them...

I think there's societal argument for disallowing 'normal' incest, because it normally involves a power imbalance of some sort. But these people didn't grow up together. Biologically, they weren't programmed to avoid this-- we gain our aversion to incest by being raised together.

However, having children together was massively irresponsible. On the other hand, I do feel that way about people with known significant genetic defects who choose to have children.

It's all a big sticky mess, and the only thing I think is that jail time is probably not going to improve anything for anyone.

Well, it's a very different sort of power imbalance. There isn't anything like a familial relation. I'm not saying all relationships involving a power imbalance ought to be prohibited, but that you can argue that familial relations would constitute ones that do.

The only possible parent child incest situation I could even mentally imagine that wouldn't involve abuse would be the kind where the child was conceived by the parent who was a teenager at the time and then gave the child up for adoption and thus had NOTHING at all do to with raising them and they meet up again a few decades down the line without realizing their genetic relationship ahead of time.

But yeah if you were involved in raising a child you can't have any sort of sexual relationship with that child without it being all sorts of sick and wrong...

Well, unless you can prove it, it's just a speculative position that should not be a basis for any laws.

Not even in cases where the parent did not raise the child (I'm not talking about random encounter)?

If you do, we disagree strongly on that. I don't think that it's a vague possibility that, if incest were fully legal, there would be parent-child relationships that were coercive, either.

I didn't say the above a vague possibility, though. The vague possibility is such a relationship + non-reporting of abuse as a child because of continued coercion.

My main point though is that those who engage in such relationship with consent while adults should be left alone, regardless of a possibility that some other people engage in it through coercion. Nobody canceled presumption of innocence. Actual lack of consent (basically, rape) should be proven in each case.

Worry About U.S. Water, Air Pollution at Historical Lows

Americans currently express record-low concern about both air pollution and pollution of drinking water. Thirty-six percent say they worry a great deal about air pollution and 48% about pollution of drinking water. Both figures are down more than 20 percentage points from the year 2000.

These results are based on Gallup's annual Environment poll, conducted March 8-11. The trends are part of a broader decline in worry about environmental threats documented in the poll.

Gallup asked Americans to say how much they worry about each of seven environmental problems. All show significantly less worry today than in 2000, when worry was at or near its high point for each item. The declines in concern about drinking-water pollution and air pollution are the largest for the problems included in this year's poll.

[...]

Americans' concerns about environmental problems have dropped in recent years, coincident with their drop in support for various environmental policies and the higher priority they assign to economic growth than to environmental protection.

There are two likely explanations for the declining concern. First, Americans are a bit more positive now than they have been in the past about the quality of the environment. Second, the economic downturn has forced Americans to focus more on bread-and-butter economic issues than quality-of-life issues. It may be no coincidence that environmental concern was highest in 2000, when the U.S. was enjoying one of the strongest economies in recent memory, and that environmental concern has reached new lows recently, after the worst financial downturn in the last 25 years.

Um, again, I didn't argue that there aren't cases of adult incest victims whose abuse began as children. The "vague possibility" pertains to such a case (child abuse; which is obviously illegal regardless of incest) + non-reporting of it when the victim becomes an adult and continues such relationship against his or her will. Note that since I say possibility, I obviosuly agree that there are *some* such cases. What is their percentage, however?

How can you prove it, and examined in what context? What percentage of all cases gets examined? Because if it gets examined solely because of dysfunction, it tells us nothing about possible non-dysfunctional relationships.

How is this argument inapplicable to relationships between adults and children?

The "vague possibility" pertains to such a case (child abuse; which is obviously illegal regardless of incest) + non-reporting of it when the victim becomes an adult and continues such relationship against his or her will.

I'm still not sure why you call that a vague possibility and then say you're sure it exists. A vague possibility is something that may not happen at all.

Do you mean for each individual case, it'd be a 'vague possibility' that a parent-child incestuous relationship was coercive?

Something happened once, therefore it happens all the time. More likely explanations-- that many conservatives are actually racist, anti-Muslim, etc.-- should be dismissed out of hand, because one time, this thing happened.

This is a tactic Andrew Breitbart pioneered - the demand for answers to absurd questions, repeated over and over. I refuse to play, and instead point and laugh. I set up a macro for the tag #PlantedCommentsLOL and I'll just use it every time one of these idiots starts up again.

And I won't be rehashing the story of Killgore Trout's now legendary drunken racist comment-posting (not planting) spree yet again, at Patterico's demand. He knows he's bullshitting and so do I.

And the workers at Fox who tolerate what's going on with zero morality or empathy? To make a buck, keep up with the Joneses. We as Americans (and probably humans) tolerate cheating, lying, slimy behavior, just to get ahead. I see it every single day.

I will go to my grave consciously not engaging in it, and as I see it the consequence is being a little bit less of a money maker.

Personally, I'm not sure that I'd want to admit that my site or sites that I'm defending seem to be packed full of liberal socks whose job it is to make the Right look racist. Hell, if that were really my argument, I'd consider shutting my site down. Or, at the very least, doing something to police all those socks, like deleting their comments and banning them.

Seriously, if the "logic" is that all racist comments or even that the bulk of them are "false flag" posts made by liberal agitators, then what does it say of the people running the sites/blogs that they not only allow these posts to stay, but allow the most prolific of the posters to remain in good standing?

How is this argument inapplicable to relationships between adults and children?

Because there is no analogy between an average child's and average adult's psychology (I'm not taking borderline cases which arise from the necessarily somewhat arbitrary delimitation of the age of consent). We can derive the average harm from child abuse because of what we know about children and adults. But you would actually have to show that adults engaging in such relationships do it because of coercion as a matter of principle (on average). Peer-reviewed studies, etc.

I'm still not sure why you call that a vague possibility and then say you're sure it exists. A vague possibility is something that may not happen at all.

Do you mean for each individual case, it'd be a 'vague possibility' that a parent-child incestuous relationship was coercive?

What I mean is that it should be demonstrated that it's not enough to enforce child abuse laws, and that it's necessary to crack down on each adult incestuous power-differential relationship just because it is possible that it may have been started as child abuse. So I'm asking again: what percentage of incestuous relationships began as child abuse and continued into adult coercive relationships? And what percentage started in adulthood?

But why, if you're supposing that there's all these invisible cases of incest that are perfectly okay, couldn't someone say the same thing about adult-child relationships? By calling into question the psychiatric records showing that sibling incest is damaging by contending that such relationships are only examined when pathological, that seems to me to open up the exact same line of argument for relationships with children.

If you're going to make the assumption that nothing in the record can be relied upon because there could be cases of incest that are outside the record and unreported that are positive, it's pretty impossible to disprove that.

What I mean is that it should be demonstrated that it's not enough to enforce child abuse laws, and that it's necessary to crack down on each adult incestuous power-differential relationship just because it is possible that it may have been started as child abuse.

By calling into question the psychiatric records showing that sibling incest is damaging by contending that such relationships are only examined when pathological, that seems to me to open up the exact same line of argument for relationships with children.

Nope, because with children the harm can be derived from more general principles, which also happen to be more obvious. It's not necessary to base this on psychiatric record of actual cases. There's simply no analogy between adult and children-adult "relationships". Besides, in adult relationships you have to go an extra-step, because you're denying consenting (prima facie) adults their rights.

Also, it's not the state's role to regulate the supposedly abusive relationships between consenting (prima facie) adults on its own. It's not up to the state to divorce an abusive husband from his wife, even though their relationship can be visibly dysfunctional. It's still up to her to leave him and ask the state for protection, if necessary.

If you're going to make the assumption that nothing in the record can be relied upon because there could be cases of incest that are outside the record and unreported that are positive, it's pretty impossible to disprove that.

But this objection doesn't make your argument more valid. No, it's still not sufficient to analyze only abusive incestuous relationships, because by definition you will conclude that they're abusive. And possible non-abusive relationships can be hidden for numerous plausible/obvious reasons, starting with illegality of incest and ending with social taboo. No study that doesn't at least attempt in seeking out non-dysfunctional couples (even if it fails despite the best efforts), but relies simply on the record that is biased towards dysfunction is not a firm base for legal restrictions.

I'd say the large number of incest cases that continue into adulthood, and the large number of incest cases that are only revealed long afterwards, do demonstrate that.

1. [citation needed] 2. Percentage?

If you're rejecting the psychiatric record, there's no way to attain those numbers.

And therefore no cause to deny consenting (prima facie) adults their relationships. Anyway, what are percentages of the categories in the prev. comment in the record?

Nothing was ever planted by Killgore Trout, he used his own name and made it clear what he was doing and why, and even more to the point - I didn't put him up to it, or plan it with him. If he'd asked before getting all up in it, in fact, I would have advised against it.

It was kind of an obnoxious stunt, but it certainly got their attention. Hot Air tightened up their moderation a little after that, a tacit admission that KT had a point. The overt racism problem on right wing blogs was getting out of control.

And it's only gotten worse since then.

Agreed. It was stupid but it did produce results. I did provide the wingnuts with a scapegoat for all the racist comments on their websites but they would have claimed false flag anyways. There was a time when the Koskidz used to accuse me of planting anti-semitic diaries too. Idiots always find someone else to blame to avoid dealing with the real problems.

I do really love my local neighborhood mom and pop hardware store. I still have to wire the automatic vent system for the greenhouse before the weather heats up. A helpful employee spent over an hour with me figuring it out and explaining it to me. All the conduit, wiring and the tutorial only cost me about 50 bucks. Now that's service!

32 years ago my wife and I moved into a neighborhood that was built in the 1950's. I would go to the large hardware stores looking for electrical, plumbing, etc., and I would come up empty. I discovered that 3 blocks away was a hardware store that specialized in the needs of that neighbor hood. Every employee was a retired member of those trades and I went there faithfully for parts and advice. After 50 years of service to their community it became a furniture store.

You can derive the harm between siblings from general principles as well, though.

I'd say there's no analogy between relationships not between siblings, and those between siblings, as well.

And therefore no cause to deny consenting (prima facie) adults their relationships. Anyway, what are percentages of the categories in the prev. comment in the record?

Well, this conversation is kicking up my PTSD, so I'm going to drop it now. Sorry.

I really don't get how you can be asking me for percentages of a figure you're saying has got to be incorrect anyway, since only the pathological versions get reported on. But I really can't focus on this any longer without getting super-depressed.

Keith Moon

The legendary drummer for The Who, Keith Moon would be 65 if he were still alive today. Sadly, Moon died in 1978 at the age of 32. His destructive lifestyle earned him the nickname “Moon the Loon” – and an early demise. The drummer died after taking 32 sedative tablets in the same London apartment in which Cass Elliot had died a little under four years earlier. Moon died a couple of weeks after the release of ‘Who Are You.’

Quickly after the failed launch of the Kwangmyongsong-2 rocket, two things became abundantly clear: We, the foreign press corps brought in to cover the launch, knew far less about it than our colleagues outside of North Korea, and the only people we would be informing about anything today would be our government-assigned guides/minders.
