Going to listen to the Last Waltz OST tonight. Rest easy Levon.

Glad you included that Last Waltz video, that is the first thing that comes to my mind at any mention of Levon.

One of the greats! He will be missed.

Indeed, I liked Cash's version of that song too.

I first recall hearing the Joan Baez version.

I first recall hearing the Joan Baez version.

I haven't heard hers yet. Will look though.

If you are going to call your band THE BAND, you'd better be pretty damn good...and boy, were they!

passed away today at the age of 71

it's a good thing i'm the same age as i was in 1969

I was heartened to hear that Robbie Robertson and Levon mended their fences. It was a shame that they held their grudges for so long.

Levon was truly one of a kind, in a band full of unique personalities.

13 Obdicut  Thu, Apr 19, 2012 1:29:05pm

Sounds like a real behind-the-scenes driving force in a lot of other musician's lives, too.

14 Lidane  Thu, Apr 19, 2012 1:48:39pm

I'll be watching The Last Waltz again in tribute.

And lest anyone think that The Band only influenced American and/or English speaking bands, this is a song in Spanish about The Last Waltz. In fact, that's what the title translates to:

The keyboard player wrote it about the first time he saw the film, and how it quickly became an obsession for him.

Heh.

Now on FB: The Mayans were right. There will be no 2013, since Dick Clark won't be there to count it in.

16 S'latch  Thu, Apr 19, 2012 1:50:48pm

Thanks for the music, Levon.

17 Petero1818  Thu, Apr 19, 2012 1:53:00pm

To me, more than Robbie, more than Garth, (and I love both of them) Levon was The Band. A real loss whose passing will no doubt be overshadowed by the passing of Dick Clark. But it makes no difference. RIP Levon.

18 nutz4Tuna  Thu, Apr 19, 2012 1:55:10pm

Goddamnit. Guess I'll never see a Midnight Ramble.

Thank you, Levon. RIP

19 lizardofid  Thu, Apr 19, 2012 1:57:55pm

Quite a loss. I enjoyed his filmwork too.

20 Sol Berdinowitz  Thu, Apr 19, 2012 2:12:37pm

Gotta dig out my old copies of the Music From Big Pink & the Basement Tapes. Levon did some great singing on those, too.

Good obit in the NY Times

In Mr. Helm’s drumming, muscle, swing, economy and finesse were inseparably merged. His voice held the bluesy, weathered and resilient essence of his Arkansas upbringing in the Mississippi Delta.

RIP

22 nines09  Thu, Apr 19, 2012 2:15:48pm

Unique voice. Unique talent. They make fewer Levons these days it seems. Rest well.

Maybe my favorite music documentary ever.

I found a gem.

A kid of sad article ...I am glad in the end they made peace with each other to some extent.

Each track of Music From Big Pink and The Last Waltz will forever be etched into my brain.

Listening to those two albums proves the old adage: They don't make 'em like they used to.

Greg Ham of Men at Work also died.

30 Ming  Thu, Apr 19, 2012 4:30:31pm

I loved The Last Waltz when I saw it in the late 1970's. Godspeed to Levon Helm.
